Ran into the food truck on Fort Sam Houston. The chicken and waffles were so yummy . So much so, I decided to go by the restaurant after work (I live on the North end of SA) and pick up some for my husband. The experience was not the same; lady & gentleman on the truck were so sweet and gave me a sense of home (I'm from Louisiana). The restaurant crew was a lot less engaged with the customer. It was more of a 'just gimme your order feel', which I can definitely get past...but the food didn't taste quite the same (portion size was different and my husband was far less impressed due to that difference. This has to be one of the best places to get some fried chicken in San Antonio. One of my co-workers had bought the original and the spicy fried chicken for out boss's birthday party. I got the royal pleasure of picking it ulp. I'm so glad I got to see this hidden jem of San Antonio. It was the talk of the whole building as soon as I put it down. The fumes wafted through the whole building. The chicken was tasty and juicy. It had slightly crunchy skin with soft juicy meat that was cooked all the way through. Saw a social media post about where to get the best tasting chicken. It was a toss between Chatman's and Gus's chicken. We have been craving chicken and have tried Gus's so wanted to try Chatman's. Today, we drove up to an old Long John Silvers restaurant which is now painted yellow. A simple big sign that says Chatmans Chicken invited you in. We walked in and were greeted by friendly staff members who took our order. We decided on a family box with a mix of spicy and lemon pepper. A side of okra, collard greens and French fries. We went to find a seat and a gentleman with a big smile said hello to us as we sat down and waited for our food. I'm thinking to myself... I like this atmosphere! Everyone is friendly including the customers. Our food was brought to our table by one of the staff. All the food was largely proportioned and piping hot which is the way I like my food. I hate cold food which quickly gets hard and stale. Everything was so flavorful and just enough seasoning. Chicken was juicy and spiced just right. We ended up speaking with the gentleman that gave us a big smile and learned that he was Mr. Chatman himself! Super friendly and down to earth. He even brought us a sample of the fried pork riblet. Oh my gosh!!! It was so good! Tasted like a perfectly seasoned pork chop! It impresses me when the owners come out and talk with their customers. Gives it that personal touch. The food here is always very good but the service leads much to be desired. I appreciate that the owner offers jobs for young people who are being trained or for individuals who need a second chance. That is honorable but the customers suffer the consequences of those who are serving and do not seem very competent. read more

This is the only fried chicken place where I've ordered food and got hot chicken within 3 minutes of ordering! Mr. Chatman runs a tight crew and the staff were professional and efficient. The sweet potato pie was soft and creamy and there were no complaints about the chicken. Definitely will want to try the fried ribs. read more

I've been here a few times now. This is not the best chicken in san antonio in my opinion. I eat chicken in some form at least 4 times /week. Perfectly ok if you re on this side of town. The greens do taste like Glory greens and the mac n cheese is completely forgettable. Had a slice of sweet potato pie that tasted like the pie I got at heb which isn't bad just not that good. The staff are very friendly and helpful. Prices are cheaper than church's and popeyes. If you're on this side of town, go ahead and try it. This was our stop for National Fried Chicken day, and it was a-okay with me! We celebrated with style. They have a lot of options, so be prepared to make some tough decisions: dark meat, white meat, sides, corn fritters (you should NOT skimp on these), livers, gizzards, basically anything part of a chicken or fish that they have they will fry, and yeah, there's just a lot of food available here. We opted for a mixed 12-piece meal, with a 2-liter of Coke, and some corn fritters for the four of us. There were leftovers, but they're gone now, so don't get any ideas. I'd definitely come back, there's just too much to try in one visit. But if you're planning on trying everything, take a teenager with you. They'll pick up the slack. read more

After seeing many positive reviews on Chatman's I had to try it. So, wife and I headed out on our "binge" night as we typically don't eat fried food. Pulled into the parking lot, wasn't too full at all. Walked in and it's a joint. Which I like. I'm pretty sure we were talking to Mr. Chatman himself. Really nice guy. Gave us a free sample of the fried pork ribs. Really good. I ordered a three-piece dinner with okra and cole slaw. Wife did the ribs with fries and okra and a unsweet tea. All for $27. Only issue I had is I asked for the cajun seasoning. Didn't get it, just got straight up fried chicken. Kind of disappointed. Wasn't in the mood to bring it up. Everything was fresh and hot. Probably the best fried chicken I've had in this town. Why four stars? Really wanted the cajun spice and the place was kind of messy. Our table needed cleaning and the floor needed swept. The nicest folks ever! The owner (I presume) let me try different items on the menu and I was in awe since this was my first visit. I love some down home cooking and I definitely felt like I was eating a meal my grandma would make. I got a little greedy and ordered the fried riblets dinner, chicken strips meal and 2 piece chicken, oh and let me not forget the koolaid. So, these riblets were the bomb, like who thinks of frying ribs? Well, this was definitely a hit and if I lived closer I'd probably visit a couple of times a week. The greens were ok, didn't taste like Collards more like mustard greens, but it wasn't bad. I always like to have a side of greens with my fried chicken so I would order them again. Now, the mashed potatoes were a major fail. I tasted no salt or butter, it had to be instant potatoes, BUT the gravy was really good. However, it didn't save the potatoes, I couldn't eat them. My daughter ate the chicken strip dinner and I assume it was good because there was nothing left of it... fries, strips and a roll. The chicken was really good, seasoning was on point and the pieces are a nice size as well. I wanted to try the mac and cheese, but they were sold out. Koolaid was perfect, just the right amount of sugar. All the food was packaged well, a little on the pricey side but worth it. I wasn't a fan of the rolls, out the package and not warmed. I am giving this restaurant Chapmen's only one star. I have gone inside and I gone thru the drive through. I had heard from people that I should go to Chapmen's because it is right next to the District 2 Senior Center. I can not believe the people giving the reviews if they are truthful. Now my 3 visits to Chapman I had long waits in line number one and it was me and people behind. The girl was impatient so you feel she was rude. The chicken I purchased in the restaurant when I got it home and since I had spoken raving reviews to them and giving them my good report for them. I would have thought they would have given me their best. I also ordered potatoes salad and macaroni and cheese. So the one I ordered from did not finish my order but started waiting on the ones behind me. So, I was surprised how bad the chicken was,too. It was old or seemed old and I was so disappointed. Mr Chapman was there smiling in the rear. So, I thought it is going to be great I praised their food and business. The only thing I can say that turned out good was when I returned and spoke about the chicken. The lady gave me a rib let to try and she redid my chicken order and that chicken did not disappoint it was great. So the facts are the second employee was great, she gave me great order. She asked me did I want the sides again and I said no but the chicken was much better this time and the service was also better. I would say customer service needs to improved and do not give customers old chicken and serve the customer you serving completely before switching to the one behind regardless of you know them. Make friends with your new customers so they can return to continue to grow your business. And from those experiences, I drive by Chapman Chicken and think they lost a customer and when I had given them a good report they gave me a poor order and I had to return to get an improved new order. Man those ribs where crispy and seasoned to perfection and the meat is juicy! The plate comes with 5-6 ribs and two sides of your choice. I ordered the corn fritters, which where very juicy and crunchy OMG so good! the coleslaw came in a 1 oz container and was so creamy! My Dad ordered the chicken strips and fried fish, which came with a side of fries and hushpuppies. The fish was incased with a well seasoned crust and also very juicy. It wasn't fishy tasting or falling apart on touch. The fries also where seasoned very well and everything is hot not room temp. You know they just fried everything and didn't have it laying around. The atmosphere is fun and inviting and the staff asked how everything was? is this our first time here? When my wife and I moved here from Baltimore, we thought the thing we were going to miss the most was crabs. Turns out that crawfish can scratch that itch, but we have been craving fried chicken since we left chicken boxes and Royal Farms back home. While places serving fried chicken and lake trout are on almost every corner where we're from, it seems that San Antonio has a severe shortage of good fried chicken joints. All we've been able to find are either your standard fast food or places that are trying to be too bougie with the fried chicken. It's across town, but Chatman's is the only place we're going to bother going for our fix now. We got a mixed 12pc fried hard, gizzards, and sides of okra, corn fritters, and slaw. They were all out of the greens and their mac, but we'll try again next time. It was all great. Hell, the gizzards were better than anything we've gotten back home. Just like some seafood, gizzards have a small window between rubbery raw and rubbery overcooked: these were right in the sweet spot.
