The CDH is a popular spot for hikers trekking the nearby trails. Visited in a party of 3 on a Friday morning, and there was a line of people waiting to get through the doors at 11am. We got to pick our seat by the window. Perhaps they weren't expecting to be busy, but they were very understaffed as there was only one waitress and one host who basically got forced into waitress duties for 8+ tables. Some help arrived around noon, but it was very slow going for a while. I opted for The Breakfast, two eggs, choice of bacon/sausage, house-made pop tart, and a choice of potatoes or fruit. I got scrambled eggs with cheese which were too soft for my liking, maple turkey sausage which was my favorite part of the meal, skipped the pop tart in favor of fresh fruit (mostly melon), and overly spicy potatoes which were also undercooked and hard. Would have gotten them replaced but the waitress disappeared for a while and probably would have had to wait even longer. The staff busted their butts and did the best they could given the circumstances, but the food was meh to say the least. Overall, we enjoyed our breakfast at Chautauqua. We will visit again. But the kitchen made a series of rookie mistakes, which very easily could have been avoided, causing the star rating for our experience to rest at 3 stars for the moment. And, given other reviews, it appears that these are mistakes that Chautauqua keeps making again and again, over months and years. Such easy mistakes to avoid, and yet... It is always perplexing when management knows that such issues exist, and yet does nothing to correct them. First, the good. The atmosphere is pleasant, an old dining room that is a throwback to another era. A fire was crackling away. The guy behind the bar seated us, and was pleasant and courteous. Our server was very good. Alert, attentive but not too attentive, and pleasant. That is such an unusual thing these days, to have a pleasant server, anywhere, that we very much appreciated her. And the silverware. Such a little thing, but the silverware was placed correctly- fork on the left, knife and spoon on the right, napkin folded. No silverware wrapped in a paper napkin and tossed on the table. Thank you! We were one of only three occupied tables in the place. I mention this to make clear that the kitchen wasn't slammed, nor even rushed. The food. There were multiple problems. But, overall, the takeaway is that nearly everything was either lukewarm or downright cold, and that things that should have been plentiful were instead scant. More details: -- The breakfast churros were the exception. They were freshly cooked and hot. They weren't churros, rather something akin to beignets, but they were very tasty. Good start to the meal. -- The potatoes that came with my salmon spinach benedict were cold. They had clearly been made sometime earlier, and were then simply thrown on the plate. As a result, they were cold, tough, and shrunken. Not good at all. Nearly inedible. -- Maceo ordered a side of bacon with his meal. The bacon had been pre-cooked (which is fine), but at time of order it wasn't then thrown on the flat top for a minute or two to heat and juicify it. So the bacon was room temperature and congealed. (Why, oh why, didn't they heat it a little before serving?) -- The coffee was lukewarm. -- There was the scantest amount of hollandaise on my benedict. So little, that the top of the dish was the bright white of the poached eggs. (The eggs were freshly poached. Thank you!) Hollandaise ties a benedict together, while adding creaminess and a little acidity. Without a decent amount of hollandaise, a benedict is simply a pile of disparate, dry-ish parts. Very confusing why the kitchen would put a grand total of one tablespoon (if that) of hollandaise on a benedict. The dish was bland and boring without it. -- As for Maceo's biscuits and gravy, the biscuits were very nice, and the gravy was tasty, but there was so little gravy that after the biscuits had absorbed some of it (which they should do), there was exceedingly little gravy left to give the dish the creamy gravy consistency that it should have. And the whole dish was lukewarm. Overall, the meal was a two star. The atmosphere and service raised the rating by one star. But we will give Chautauqua another try in the future, with the hope that the kitchen will correct its easily correctable mistakes, thereby elevating the food to the quality that it so very easily could be. Please, managers, please, please dial in your kitchen. Potential certainly exists. read more

It's perfect that this place has extra porch room for outdoor seating because the Chautauqua views are too beautiful to skip out on during the summer. I appreciated that even the seats at the tables were spaced apart pretty well and that the menus were online. There is a QR code on the table to scan and pull up the menu on your phone. In terms of ambience and service, I think they're handling safety measures very well while still being able to give customers a great way to experience the Boulder Flatirons ambience. In terms of the food, it was a little basic for my taste. I had pretty high expectations for the churro waffles since I love churros and waffles, but they tasted pretty dry and not as enjoyable as I wanted them to be. They do have some other interesting items on the menu that I'd be willing to try next time though. But I probably wouldn't recommend the food here to a visitor unless we were spending the day in Chautauqua Park--which isn't a bad idea since we got to see deer roaming around freely! read more

The food that my friend and her husband ordered looked great. Based on looks and their reviews, I would say the fried chicken bene and the breakfast burrito are solid. I ordered the avocado toast and it had two slices of bread. One was burned (actually charred black) and they served anyway, which isn't really acceptable. There wasn't much avocado either -- bummer. My partner got the fried chicken sandwich. The fries were good but the chicken itself was dried out and too small for the bun. I was there over the weekend with my girlfriend's family. The whole place is just amazing at the base of the flatirons. All the staff we encountered were great. But one guy stood out and that's why I'm writing this review. Far too often people only review a spot when things don't go as they planned and leave a negative review. This one is not that. A gentleman at the bar named Connor went above and beyond to make our experience special. It came very natural to him providing excellent service. My girlfriend's mother kept mentioning how she wanted to get back into the bar to have an espresso martini with Connor, and we did just that Saturday night. His level of service wasn't forced it was very natural and fun to be around. It wasn't just us that having a good time with Connor, it was everyone else at the bar too. So I just wanted to recognize great service when I see it. Thanks again Connor and Chautauqua Dining Hall. The cottages and lodging are blast from the past in the best way possible. Prepped hours ago and put in fridge the "country" salad was soggy with soggy croutons and old old hard boiled eggs and disgusting bacon, the risotto was old and stale with leather-tough mushroom on top, dirty beer glass, trout served cold with skin side up with sauce on the skin(!!) -gross - and server didn't offer to comp anything. Part of me feels that there is a master chef in that kitchen who wanted to get away from the pretension of the foodie scene and maybe see some gorgeous scenery. I mean, what better explains Mole Tater Tots with queso fresco, pickled red onions, crema, and cilantro? Goodness, those are tasty. Some of the better fajitas I've had in a while. I do enjoy my fajitas but if your experience is anything like mine, the meats and vegetables can often be dripping in oil. Plus, the meat is usually pretty tough. Neither of those were the case for me and my bride-to-be when we visited. The steak and chicken were tender. The sides were well seasoned. All good things to say. The salads we had were nice and light. Nothing was overdone on the dressing so you still felt like you were doing a good job of getting your greens in. Then, there was the pasta. Both the pesto and red sauce had a good flavor. The pasta was cooked well, so it wasn't over or under done. Between the chicken and the pork on the pasta, I'd definitely recommend the pork. It has a nice spicy quality but it's not too spicy so don't worry. If you're saying OMG that's a lot of food, you're not wrong. We were also doing a tasting for an event we have coming up here so it was important for us to try everything and make sure our guests had an excellent meal lined up. It's not often you walk out of a restaurant and the first thing you do is download Yelp and create an account to warn others of this atrocity that calls itself a restaurant. I did not know it was humanly possible for a breakfast to be this bad, undercooked potatoes, bland eggs, turkey sausage didn't even look edible so I didn't bother eating it. Asked for bread with the soup we ordered and didn't receive it, waitress didn't even know what the soup of the day was, and also one of the dudes looked like he was definitely on drugs. I would rather walk through a field of broken glass than bring anyone to this place to dine. The only thing saving this place is the fact that it is called Chautauqua dining hall and located where it is. Never coming back, don't recommend wasting your time - go to a real place that knows how to cook breakfast food properly. So disappointed. read more

Enjoyed Sunday Brunch at Chautauqua Dining Hall this past weekend with a couple of friends. Great location and view, as they are at the trailhead of Chautauqua Park. Parking was a bit busy with the hikers, but we were able to find a spot not too far from the building. The building is historic with a spacious porch and cozy-cabin vibes. They have old/historic photos from the early 1900's which I love! The inside is clean, cozy, nice fireplaces throughout, and was appropriately spaced for Covid. We were immediately seated for our reservation and our server was very welcoming and sweet. The Brunch menu has a good variety of classics with a Mexican twist. There is something to enjoy for everyone. My friends ordered the Chautauqua Breakfast which is your standard Farmer's breakfast, and with a house-made Pop Tart! I ordered the Churro Waffle and we had Mole Tots to share. The food was well portioned, made-to-order, and absolutely delicious! The house-made Pop Tart and Mole Tots were so fun and unique. The Churro Waffle was absolutely delicious, perfectly cooked, and came with perfectly caramelized bananas. I'm not sure if was supposed to be served with syrup, but it honestly didn't need it. Everything tasted great and was very filling! I think this place deserves more stars than it has. It's a great Boulder staple, rich with history, and lovely dining atmosphere. The scenery around the restaurant is just beautiful. Sitting outside on a nice day was just amazing! We arrived pretty hungry and started out with biscuits for the table which were perfectly flaky and buttery. I got the crispy fried chicken sandwich and it was just what I wanted. The chicken wasn't overly greasy and the breading was perfectly crisp and not soggy or mushy. Though I'm not normally a big coleslaw fan, the coleslaw in this sandwich is delicious and goes so well with the chicken. The shoestring fries were amazing as well--they were pretty much the perfect fries. The chautauqua dining hall is a cute building just to the left of the rangers cottage at Flatirons! We decided to eat here because we were starving after our hike! We went in for lunch on a Wednesday around 1:45pm and were seated right away! Our seats gave us a view of the mountains and the patio is decorated with flowers and the whole experience was really pretty. As for the food, we got the charcuterie board and huitlacoche flatbread! The charcuterie board was smaller than we expected. It included two thin slices of grilled sourdough, huckleberry jam, a few slices of cured meats, and two cheese selections. It would have been nice to have been told what the meats and cheeses were in advance. The flatbread was delicious! We did not know what huitlacoche was and the menu only mentioned corn, jalapeno, oaxaca cheese, red onions, and arugula. When we asked, our server informed us that it was a kind of fungus, and we realized thats what huitlacoche was! Overall, the portions were pretty small for the price but the food did taste good!
