The food was good but not what I expected. I ordered the beef carne guisada. I wouldn't have called it carne guisada. I would have called it smothered steak. It was fajita meat covered in a tasty chili gravy. The difference between this and the carne guisada that I love is that the meat should be cooked till tender and falling apart. I was a regular at this restaurant until I ordered beef tacos. What I received was beef & potato taco. Yes, the meat had a diced potato filler mixed in with the beef. I was thoroughly disgusted. Had the staff told me I would have ordered another dish, but to be surprised was really bad. Service was also much slower than it used to be and food delived to the table was not hot. read more

Been loving Chavez Cafe for a few years now. They have added a few new favorites like the Tenga or the El Nino combo plates!! I highly recommend them but hard to forget the old favorites. Like the carnitas or the stuffed avocado!! Maybe just my opinion but Chavez is the best Mexican food in spring branch! read more

We really enjoy eating at Chavez and find ourselves going more and more. I have enjoyed several of their combo and taco plates. Their poblano chicken is so tasty. We went for the first time this evening. I don't particularly like Tex-Mex: too salty and smothered in sauce. I only ordered the side of beef fajita taco and it was delicious! The verde sauce with unsalted (!) chips was delicious. The burrito is huge. We were with a large (20 person) party. Service was excellent. The margaritas are huge and delicious. Location on HWY 6.... Delish TexMex! Ordered food to go and got the Mexico Enchiladas w/ extra mole sauce and chicken fajita enchiladas and side of guacamole. Food was very good, the chips are thin and the red and green sauces are really good, red was a bit spicy but good. We went here many years ago and for whatever reason we never went back. We called several times after covid hit but they were closed. So today being burned out on all the other places around us, we tried again and yay they were open. Picked up take out based on a neighbor's recommendation and it was pretty baller. Great tortillas, fajitas had all the toppings and all the flavor. Overall my partner and I really enjoyed it and can't wait to try more of the menu. The only snag was that the beef fajitas were pretty chewy so even though the flavor was great I would likely stick to the chicken next time. Great portions and great spread. My girlfriend came here twice: once with her girlfriends and once with me. When we came together, we ended up ordering the fajita beef plate for two so we could share (duh!) We got the fajita plate and it looked like I could eat it all myself UNTIL we got the sides that came with rice, a charro bean soup and some salad with avocado. Now with all of this, this was a LOT of food. 1) The rice was pretty good. Not overcooked and was definitely not undercooked. Nice salty seasoning on it as well. 2) The charro bean soup was not to my liking at all, I had one taste of it and put it back down. 3) The fajita on the fajita plate was pretty good. I'm a steak-driven guy and this one was pretty good. My girlfriend said it was "really soft with a really good flavor". 4) The veggies on the fajita plate were disappointing. They were completely drenched in fat and oil and made it very unappetizing to eat by themselves. Overall: The service was nice, the server seemed to be kind of new as he forgot who ordered what, but with some help, he recovered quickly. The food was decent, with some highs and lows. By myself, I probably wouldn't add this to my list of restaurants to go to, but if my girlfriend or family wanted to go, I wouldn't object. read more

Really good tasting Mexican food...everything taste really homemade and gives me that feelin that I was living in Laredo, TX again...the staff is VERY friendly and steadily refilling your drinks or chips and salsa...I really recommend the fish tacos...they're some of the best I had in the Houston area...and tge chicken fajitas have an awesome flavor...and the drinks are so so so delicious...my suggestion to anyone is to get a frozen margarita...any flavor will do...the bar area is pretty small and a large group couldn't fit in there...but there's more than enough room in the dining section to relax and watch one of the many televisions...if anyone is looking for authentic tasting Mexican food...this ducked off spot is one of the best in the Houston area...in my opinion read more

Ordered a grande burrito to go and was told 25 to 30 minutes. Made it there in 25 minutes and waited around 10 minutes before the first staff member came to the hostess table. I advised them that I was there for my pickup order but they walked away. A male staff member came up to run a card 5 minutes later and I asked about my order, he said they'd look into it. A young staff member came a 5 minutes after and said my food was sitting there at the hostess table the whole time. It was ice cold after sitting out while I waited. Another woman waiting with me started to drive off out of frustration.. even though she had already paid. I got enchiladas $12... mostly dark meat chicken which had bones and ligaments. The rice and beans were okay. They need to shift strategy... it's a dying place. I am confused... How does this place get such a high rating? There's nothing to say about the service, which was good and efficient but the food is just not good... Let's start with the obvious: this is not a Mexican restaurant! It's a Tex-Mex. I lived in Mexico for some time and I am still going there for work on a regular basis. I was hoping to find these wonderful tastes but no... Plain Tex-Mex, bathing in mayonnaise and other fatty mixtures. The place has no charm at all: just a large room with no conviviality. I found this place on yelp because a place around the corner I was meaning to go to was closed. This place had good reviews so I figured I'd check it out. I'm so glad I did. I'm here the second time in less than a week and drive right past the place I wanted to go to again and didn't think twice. Food is hot fresh and cooked to orde( so if you like things just a little different there more than happy to accommodate) My waiter was very friendly and very helpful. Seating time fast. Time from order to eat was surprisingly quick as well. If you look at my reviews I'm very well traveled from New York to Chicago to New Orleans. And I'll say I prefer the Mexican food here better than what I had in Mexico. I'll say so far this ranks in top 3 Mexican food I've had in my life. This is the most affordable genuinely good tasting Mexican restaurant I have been to in Houston. This is my third visit and I have tried different entrees each time. Today I ordered the molé enchiladas and I enjoyed them so much more than I usually do! Their rice has fresh vegetables loosely dispersed throughout and it isn't greasy like some places. And really the red salsa, served hot which usually isn't my fav, is so well seasoned that I love it! The service was fine, cordial with good follow up, and everyone seems nice. The restaurant appearance is casual but clean and there is a lot of natural light. It's pleasant without being fancy. $8.99 and I am out extremely satisfied. read more

Actually went back for a second time on this trip tonight. There are many, many excellent Mexican places around here, but very few of them have a full bar and stay open late. And their menu really goes beyond just standard Mexican fare. Lots of variety, lots of twists. We were staying in Houston for the night, and this showed up as one of the highly rated restaurants that was close to our hotel. The ambience is nothing the special, but the service was incredibly attentive and friendly and the food was AMAZING. First they bring out warm chips and two different, pretty spicy salsas. My husband ate both of the little pots of salsa and then ordered seconds because they were so good. For entrees we had the Enchiladas Verdes which may be the best Mexican meal I have EVER had. The sauce was SO good and the chicken on the inside was seasoned beautifully. My husband ordered "El Trio" which was skirt steak, chicken and baby ribs on a hot plate served with all the fix-ins to make your own fajitas. This was one of the meals on our 5-night road trip across the US and have to say that it was my favorite meal. Will definitely revisit if we are ever in Houston again! read more

A friend had recommended this place, so Hubbs and I went one afternoon. It was really weird because the interior kind of reminded me of a Texan dining hall from the 90's. Even though it's a Mexican restaurant, there aren't really any Mexican decor, posters or colors anywhere (save a few ranch-style iron icons, but I think were more Texican than Mexican). We got seated in green cushy booths and waited a while to get our menus. When we finally got our menus (after a neighboring table and finished with theirs), we placed our order and waited for a good, long while. It seemed that the other patrons (all elderly Caucasians) had gotten their food first, and I was getting impatient and hangry. But when we finally got our meal, all was right with the world. The food was tasty, delicious, fresh and flavorful. I really wanted to give this place 3 or less stars, but the food really saved it. Like other people have mentioned, the service is S...L......O.......W. I don't know if it's a lack of experience or they just hate their lives. This place is amazing. Great flavor, perfect portions. I am a traveling man. Work has me all over North America. In all my travels I must say that Chavez Mexican Restaurant stands up to its "claim". Outside the restaurant it has painted "The best Mexican food" I must agree! It was my second visit when I had the privilege of meeting the owner. A very humble man who says they do their best. they have very nice and cozy place. Staff are super nice, and service is amazing. as soon as you sit you'll get warm tortillas and 2 different kinds of salsa. I don't know what exactly was the difference, but both were perfect and delicious. they were so good and we ate them so fast. just before we finish them up, the waiter came fo refill. perfect timing. The food came with an excellent presentation. We ordered a burrito, a chili relleno with enchiladas; all of them were very authentic and delicious. I was full before finish up everything in my plate, but the food was so good that I kept trying. I've been in many Mexican restaurants so far, and Chavez is my favourite. My wife and I have found our Mexican spot. We have dined twice in the past few weeks and enjoyed both visits. My wife grew up in San Antonio and is really picky about Mexican food. The rice and beans are outstanding, an area where most places barely pass. The green sauce is really nice as well, and the Chavezrita is a great deal. We have tried the mixed plates as well as fajitas, and carne guisada. The service has been great both times. We even had a server welcome us back on our second visit. The ambience is very casual but the food quality is ridiculous, especially when compared to the value. I believe the owner does the cooking himself and cut his teeth in the Pappasitos restaurants. Chavez, in my opinion is better than all the chains including the big boys like Pappasitos and El Tiempo. Try them for yourself and enjoy! read more

Food was bursting with flavor! We ordered to-go and the food was still hot when we got home. The amount served was surprising and we ended up with leftovers for the next day.
