I've been a fan of Chavez for years, and after the delicious burritos we got this past weekend, we officially decided to make it a part of our regular rotation. The portions are HUGE with super reasonable prices. We got two types of burritos and a chicken fajita quesadilla. The burritos were filling, the tortillas were soft, and the queso inside was such a yummy layer. The fajita quesadilla was surprisingly delicious. It was not your basic quesadilla. The cheese reminded me of queso Oaxaca- super melty and gooey. We will definitely be picking up again soon and look forward to visiting the bar area someday soon as well! read more

they have very nice and cozy place. Staff are super nice, and service is amazing. as soon as you sit you'll get warm tortillas and 2 different kinds of salsa. I don't know what exactly was the difference, but both were perfect and delicious. they were so good and we ate them so fast. just before we finish them up, the waiter came fo refill. perfect timing. The food came with an excellent presentation. We ordered a burrito, a chili relleno with enchiladas; all of them were very authentic and delicious. I was full before finish up everything in my plate, but the food was so good that I kept trying. I've been in many Mexican restaurants so far, and Chavez is my favourite. My wife and I have found our Mexican spot. We have dined twice in the past few weeks and enjoyed both visits. My wife grew up in San Antonio and is really picky about Mexican food. The rice and beans are outstanding, an area where most places barely pass. The green sauce is really nice as well, and the Chavezrita is a great deal. We have tried the mixed plates as well as fajitas, and carne guisada. The service has been great both times. We even had a server welcome us back on our second visit. The ambience is very casual but the food quality is ridiculous, especially when compared to the value. I believe the owner does the cooking himself and cut his teeth in the Pappasitos restaurants. Chavez, in my opinion is better than all the chains including the big boys like Pappasitos and El Tiempo. Try them for yourself and enjoy! read more

Great Mexican restaurant that offers seafood dishes as well as the traditional fare. I especially love their seafood soup. They offer half price margaritas Monday through Thursday that are quite nice. Great service and a nice ambiance. Highly recommend. read more

Had the ground beef nachos and beef fajitas and both were good. The rice came out hot and on the fajita skillet which is a nice touch. The waiter was very helpful and attentive. Other staff assisted by filling my drink and bringing additional chips and green and red salsa. The green salsa was good the red was good too but a bit on the salty side. Then another 10 minutes to be asked what we wanted. 40 minutes after arriving we got chips and salsa. This place was pretty good. Came in today at around 2pm with my mom and it was pretty slow. Mom had the Chava plate that comes with a 10oz fish filet with rice and veggies that was 8/10 for flavor and value. I had the fajita enchiladas with rice and beans which was 5/10 for flavor and value with a frozen margarita 7/10 and chocolate brownie with icecream 7/10.. A jewel of a find for sure! I visited Chavez recently for a dinner with family and it was recommended by my cousin who had patronized previously. The outside is unassuming and the inside doesn't look like much, at first sight you may not be too sure, but don't judge this book by its cover. Some of the best restaurants and truly delicious foods are found off the beaten path. The service was great and friendly. It wasn't too busy, but I understand that some nights there is a wait, we went early. The menu gives you a variety of dishes to choose from and some that I had not seen on a Mexican cuisine menu before. I chose the "Plato de Carnitas" and I chose well. The carnitas were incredibly tender in a special sauce that had tomatoes, onions and mushrooms. The sauce reminded me of a light cream sauce, that was so incredibly delectable and a perfect accompaniment with the oh so tender pork. It was served with rice, beans (a la charra) and tortillas. Honestly, I had very little of the rice and beans as there was a good amount of carnitas and that in itself filled me up as the portion was generous. My cousin had the eggplant "El Ponchito" and raved about it. This is not a common dish on most Mexican cuisine menus and was such a pleasant find. It brought back memories of the dish in our childhood household. The margaritas, according to my sister, were awesome and sizable. One was definitely enough. I will certainly be a return devotee to try other dishes and soon. All in all this was a truly a great experience and a jewel of a gastronomic find. I highly suggest you add this to your Mexican restaurant repertoire, you won't be disappointed. read more

I never give bad reviews on places I actually enjoy but this visit was by far the worst decision. We arrived at the restaurant at 6pm. Given the circumstances we figured it would a bit of a wait because they were so busy. One hour later we continued to wait on quesadillas and fried jalapeños???! I requested the manager at our table (Alondra) to figure out what was going. She responded with "we're just very busy, I'll see what I can do". She came back moments later and said that she could do nothing about them being busy. So I suggested that she just bring our tab since we'd had enough (hour and a half into being there). She walked away and let the young lady that was serving us aware of the situation. Not an apology or anything. I don't get frustrated much since I understand that this industry sometimes get very overwhelming. However; I expect to be treated as a customer. Someone who is bringing business so that bills can be paid. I could've made the same food at home with less stress but I figured my family would enjoy a warm meal after days of no electricity or water. This was the WORST visit to any restaurant I've ever chosen to spend my money at. I will definitely make sure that I look for another place where I will be better appreciated. My friend & I checked out this place called Chavez Mexican Cafe or something off of Gessner near Kempwood. It was actually pretty good. Service was on point. We were sat immediately and a server named Jose attended to us. We had that queso flameado that actually came out in flames . We also tried the mixed fajitas which was very tasty. They say during the week M- Th they have $2.99 margaritas until they close I think. The margarita too was very consistent. I knock off one star because of the ambience. I really love how this is so close to work. We didn't know if seating is wait for seating or seat yourselves, so we just randomly sat down at an open booth. Our waitress immediately accommodated us and gave us water. She was very active in checking in on us. I'm vegetarian so they also had to change my meal a bit. this was my first visit and it would be the last one for sure!!! i placed the order for myself and my child her food came out first and mine ten minutes later, which was really absurd since she was half way done with her meal since it was from kids menu which was a beef fajita taco and fries! her drink was not even offered to her i had to share mine with her! so my order finally comes out and it wasn't what I expected I though i had order tacos but what they had the description in the menu.I couldn't find me the item in the menu they have on there website since it doesn't seem to be updated, so they brought out chalupas or sopes as I know them. I didn't consume the food since it wasn't to my liking and i had the waitress Alondra take it back, well she went and complained to the owner which is her father!!!! We've ordered take out a couple of times from this restaurant. I really like their Spanish rice not so much the refried beans. I've ordered the fajitas twice and it is different than what you might typically expect. The onions and peppers are almost in a sauce which is quite tasty. My only critique is the portion size. Really sorry to have to do this because it's my favorite Mexican restaurant but I could not enjoy my meal with that music they were playin ( anxiety producing music ) I asked if they could change the cd to another kind of music. , I didn't even say anything about the loudness. There were not a lot of patrons in the room , there' was not a party going on that would justify that music. The very nice waitress went and asked the guy at the bar. He would not do it. I asked again a second time and after 20 or so minutes he changed it to a different song ( a little more calming music ) but after that one song was over he switched it back.
