This place is delicious! It's tucked away in plaza Midwood so if you don't know it's there you may not pass it. There Italian sun is huge and just bomb. I'm not a cheesesteak person but anyone that likes a cheesesteak will love these!! Very classic Philly with cheez wiz! I finally had a chance to hit the spot a couple of weeks ago. I am a person who really loves Philly cheesesteaks, and I will try any one who has been advertised as a top cheesesteak in the city, which cheats has. So you know I had to go try them out and I was a disappointment. The parking at the spot is a bit of a hassle but I found two other businesses in the parking lot that I'm also free quitting, so I guess it's not a big deal. I ordered both the chicken cheesesteak and the regular cheesesteaks and I get my Philly style with provolone instead of cheese whiz. I thought the cheesesteaks were solid, but the fries could've used a little bit more heat. The regular cheesesteak is 8/10, meat can be a bit tough/ thick as opposed to shaved which is my preference. Roll is good and cheese wiz is good. Wife likes the beyond meat cheesesteak probably best in town. My favorite sandwiches there are the brisket sandwich and the Italian. The hot Italian can be a bit messy, cold travels much better and most people will not be dining at this location based on limited seating, it is a stand (Philly style which is cool). I have found the best cheesesteak south of Philly. And it is here at cheats. I've been to Philly many times and have had amazing cheesesteaks, so it's hard to find an actual true to Philly steak here in the south. I found this place while working at a job here in Charlotte and decided to try. Incredible to say the least, their whiz is really good and the steak has good seasoning. The best part for me is the authentic delicious liscio rolls they use. The bread is sized more like a torpedo in the Jimmy John's vein but different flavor and texture than larger Italian-style loafs. The prices are good, about what you'd expect from a cheesesteak at a quality specialty shop. The fries are well seasoned and crispy. They're also fairly priced for what you get in the little pack. My wife and I actually shared a cheesesteak, fries and a Diet Coke for lunch one day. There's plenty of free parking in a small lot beside the restaurant. There's also plenty of seating outside in multiple spots at the walk-up restaurant. There is no inside seating here. They do have heaters they run on certain days. I bought into the hype, and that's all they have unfortunately. Subs were a greasy salty mess. Meat was almost like ground beef texture more than sliced steak. It's wasn't like any sub I had from Philly, besides they used cheeswiz. Cheese is inconsistently mixed in with beef. Bread was good. My kids love subs and wouldn't even finish their subs. A sloppy mess but a pretty darn good cheesesteak. I cannot remember how I found out about Cheat's but as soon as I did I was anxious to give it a try. My dad and son often times get cheesesteaks from other sandwich shops so I knew this would be a place they would be into. I read that the lines were long but was willing to give it a shot. Cheat's is a super small building off Pecan with a few tables with umbrellas set up in the front. When there is a line or its busy, the front area can be confusing. It's hard to tell where the line starts and who's waiting to order or who's just waiting. Ordering was quick and easy and pretty much painless. I think we waited for about 10 minutes to order. Once we ordered we were immediately given our drinks and then the wait began. We waited and waited. I think we were in for about 35 minutes or so AFTER we placed our order. There was no shortage of staffing as it looked like employees were tripping over each other shuffling back and forth preparing orders. The wait time is the only reason I didn't give Cheat's five-stars. Not sure why it was so long of a wait, maybe inefficiencies or equipment issues but I'm clearly just looking from my ignorant perspective. The good thing about the wait is there a nice bakery that shares the same parking lot with Cheat's that we were able to check out. Once we got the food it was truly amazing. It was hot and overflowing with meat and cheese. The quality of the food definitely sets it apart from its competitors and make the wait worth it, sort of. The fries were equally as good and after we wrapped up our meal we needed a hard core nap! Service at Cheat's was also really good. I heard some rumors that they fix the meat situation (poor choice of cut and preparation). I called to ensure that they were not still using the crap meat they were using when I first went. They said they changed to ribeye and a thinner cut. So now Charlotte finally has a real cheese steak!!! Thank you for fixing this! Yes it is pricy (everything is now) but is it worth it? Yes! The good: The food. Finally having proper meat for a cheese steak, the whiz, the smaller cut onions, and the bread is on point. Pro tip: Cherry Pepper for some spice and tang. Mayo or a special sauce! But they are good on their own which is a plus. Next the kids meal, love the options and portions but $9 seems like a lot for a kids meal. The Italian $14 for 8 inch - tasted great! The cheesesteak $14 for 8 inch - sadly I wasn't impressed. It was messy (that's fine I know some people like it that way), the bread just a little too soggy in some parts for me. And I just wasn't impressed with the taste of the meat or onions. Idk, call me crazy. Sorry, I guess I'm a Philly snob and prefer house of pizza or clover joes. But if you go I would recommend the Italian and the fries. And be prepared for it to cost you $18 plus tax and tip which seems like a lot for a sandwich and fries. We bought 1 Italian, 1 cheesesteak, 1 fry, 1 kids meal and it was $45 without the tip. These cheesesteaks are amazing! Where not much can take place of an original Philly cheesesteak off the streets of Philly, cheats gets pretty damn close. The vibe of this place is awesome. Couple of tables you can sit around and eat at but ultimately it's a grab and go spot. Food here is amazing but with it not being super busy it surprisingly took a decent bit to get our food, but it was worth the wait. VERY small parking lot so just be prepared for close quarters. I absolutely love Philly's, this place doesn't live up to the hype. I don't even want to compare them to the touristy places in Philadelphia, not gonna be that guy. Meat is tough and chunky, the wiz to meat ratio is like 3/1, so only thing you are tasting is the wiz. And the price point is ridiculous, 5 classics, 4 fries, and 4 sodas ran me $125 without tip... I suppose we could attribute this to inflation. Duckworth's, Caswell Station, and Ed's tavern all have better cheesesteaks. I plan on giving them a second try, but this time I will appropriately manage my expectations. I love a good cheesesteak, so when I casually driving in the neighborhood I saw this place and decided to stop for dinner. Overall taste was okay, the cheesesteak could've used at least salt and pepper but food was hot. I got the regular cheesesteak (sub for white American cheese) and a side of fries.
