For a kosher Uzbek spot, this place is way more affordable. Living in Brooklyn, the kosher Uzbek food is way more expensive so I was very impressed with the prices. Not to mention the food here is very tasty and the portions are larger than expected. The "fresh salad" in particular was huge with two pieces of asparagus and half an avocado added to chopped cucumbers, tomatoes, onions, and greens tossed in olive oil; it reminded me of my Russian grandmothers salad. The hangar steak kebab was by far superior to any other beef kebab I've tried in queens. I like mine well season however, so if you don't like that I wouldn't order it. Every time you pass by this place during the prime times, the smells from the grill just draw you in. It definitely drew me and my friends in. The menu is quite extensive and for someone who's never had Uzbeki food, I was a total noob Googling all of the names. There are pictures in the menu, but they're very poor quality. My friends and I ordered: * chebureki with mushrooms * chebureki with veal * samcy * babaganoush * lamb ribs kebab * Chilean sea bass kebab * veal sweetbread kebab * salmon kebab * Chersi drinks - 1 tarragon and 1 duchesse pear * green baklava * chak chak All of the food was phenomenal. The seasonings are just right, and they give you a red dill sauce for the dough products that isn't overpowering. The drinks didn't taste like anything special. It reminded me oddly of those 3 for $1 chubby drinks I grew up with. The baklava was way too sweet so I had to scrape off a lot of the sugar and then wash my mouth with water. The reason why this review is missing a star is because of the service. The waitress doesn't know much English so she wasn't much help to amateur eaters. When we were nearing the end of dessert, she disappeared for quite some time and the other waitress who just started her shift was instructed to work the other side of the restaurant. All we wanted was our waitress to give us our check so we can pay for it. There were only 2 tables of 3 by the way and then one group was starting to come in. We came to this place many years ago. For whatever reason we forgot to return. We came here with Mommy before too. This time only the two of us and we arrived here for lunch! Hubby ordered herring to start. It serves with some nice potato. Must-order if you're herring eater. It was SO good! We also ordered the salad with the restaurant's name. Another must-have! This salad comes with olive, asparagus, tomato, jalapeño, lettuce, etc. This salad is almost pickle-like salad. Then we had samcy. If you don't know what that is, it's close to potato knish with a delicious sauce. Those things I just mentioned were just a warm-up! The real deal appeared after the warm-up. For our serious lunch, we had quail, chicken with bones, lamb ribs, lamb meat, and chicken wings, on skewers! Must-try them all! I loved the seasoning for meat and poultry, light but tasty. I gave 4 Star to this place because 1. The waitress spoke no English whatsoever and we had to ask for somebody who can communicate. 2. The miscommunication happened because the menu had only the name of the dish without explaining the ingredients and what it has, thus, we had to ask what each dish was made of. Cheburechnaya is the reason why I both love and am proud to be a New Yorker. Growing up eating this type of food, I can honestly say it's the epitome of what it means to be considered "authentic." Yes, on the outside and on the inside it may not seem like much, perhaps even one step below diner, but the food is far from mediocre. See, you can't judge a book by its cover! It's as if there's a Bukharian grandma cooking up a storm in the kitchen because the second you walk in it smells like home. My parents have been coming here for years and know exactly what to get so my mom took control of the order, with some of my input, of course. We ordered the manty (lamb dumplings), Cheburechnaya salad, pilaff (or plov, for those more familiar with that term), veal liver, grilled onion, french fries with mushrooms, green baklava, a pot of tea, and Chersi (tarragon flavored soda). Food coma, anyone? Manty are massive and the lamb they're filled with isn't ground but rather in chunks. Dip them in the sauce, or not, either way, they're great. The salad is huge and really refreshing, especially when you're eating such a meaty meal. Pilaff was very good as well, tastes just like the kind my relatives make so you know this stuff's legit. Fries with mushrooms: salty, shroomy, and piled with fried onions. The liver itself is decent, but when you order it with the onions you have a perfect pairing. Green baklava is not your typical baklava and isn't drenched in honey like you'd expect. Yes, theres honey, but it isn't overbearing or overly sweet, but rather much nuttier from the pistachios. The food is dirt cheap and you can bring your own wine. When my parents come here they leave with the whole dinner costing them less than $25! It's also great that you order meat by the skewer so order a variety and share it all! The skewers aren't the kind you'd see in any restaurant though, they're the real thing; the kind that look like medieval weapons. If you're in Queens and don't want to trek all the way out to Brighton Beach / Coney Island, Rego Park (aka Regostan) is the place to go for some tasty eastern european delights. Cheburechnaya is named after Chebureki, which are meat/veggie filled pockets of dough. These aren't little dumplings though, they are pretty sizeable. We had the veal chebureki. This place does classic Uzbek fare and so you can't go wrong with Shish Kebabs. These aren't little wooden stick skewers, these are two foot long metal swords stacked with different varieties of beef, lamb, and chicken. Everything is good. I was to surprised to learn I didn't review this, since it appears on my long-rumored Top 100 list and I've spent countless hours longing for their juicy, smoky kababs and even their healthy yet still excellent salads. And I've also spent a good deal of time explaining to Manhattan-based people that it doesn't take THAT long to get to Queens via subway. Even the M-train skeptics agree after the fact that the trip is well worth it. This is focused on lamb. Lamb fat works for the adventurous but lamb ribs should be just right for "everything in moderation" folks. Even you're one of the many who value healthier food more than I do, I'd say skip the chicken and split the difference by getting a salad with the lamb. The beef kabab is surprisingly excellent. I was so into the kababs that I wasn't going far afield on the menu, so thanks to my coworkers to ordering pilaf (which I feared would be boring but wasn't) and the chebureki with mushroom, a flavor-bomb with an almost soupy filling that is accompanied by an addictive tomato-type sauce (with dill?). The only thing I'd advise against is the lagman - it's pretty good but probably average for the sector. But almost everything else on the menu will impress you, even the fries. read more

A few years ago while waiting for the Q38, I've noticed this establishments because of the tinted windows which made me really curious about the food and the patrons. Then my coworker told me about it. I originally thought it was some type of Polish place but then I realized all the patrons speak Russian and it's a Kosher restaurant. Then I concluded that Cheburechnaya caters to the Bukharian Jewish population of Rego Park. The gym around the corner that my bf goes to is mostly Burkharian and also note the Bukharian synagogue nearby. Thus this place serves typical kosher foods from Uzbekistan. Also note it closes for shabatt. I've familiar with some Central Asian foods since I've been to some very Western parts of Mongolia (love mutton), but once I walked in here, I wasn't brave enough to have a sit down meal and frankly I got the feeling that I wasn't welcome in the restaurant (from patrons not staff). Nevertheless I studied the menu and although I wanted to try the rice with the liver which I heard was amazing and the kebabs (note the huge grill in the back) I heard myself ordering a samsi and Chebureki. Both are stuffed pastry type foods. Chebureki is like Balken burek/ note the word burek in the word!. I ordered both with meat and it was very filling, greasy and delicious. It came with a sauce that I cannot recall. The cashier/waitress was nice. The women on staff are really pretty, they have a sorta Eurasian look but also kind of Russian/Slavic looking as well. I have this weird theory that in locations like Central Asia (and other places), the populations would take food and fry things to get the most calories as possible in order for a person to sustain enough calories. From what I ordered I felt like I proved this theory. On the other hand, they eat a lot of ground vegetables like carrots and such so who knows. It's tasty and the meat is uber tender when hot but after a while the meat can get a bit tougher. Plus I think it's a bit too greasy. - Kebab: out of curiosity I had the lamb testicle kebab. It's not as weird as I thought. In fact I think it's pretty tasty although it has quite a prominent inner organ scent. The beef skirt is good though (eat it with the red onion to balance the flavor) overall I was satisfied with my experience although I hve to warn you the meal is heavy so do come prepared. First, we had Israeli salad. The salad was fresh and well seasoned. It came with a half of a fresh avocado and a couple stalks of asparagus. It's a great option to start with. Next, we had some chebureki. They are thin fried pastries filled with various ingredients. The best comparison would be an empanada. We had one filled with meat - the same mixture that goes inside their manti - and one with mushrooms. Eat them while they're hot and crispy. Then we had some classic manti filled with meat and onions. It was another good option. I liked them a little more than the chebureki because they were less greasy. For our main course, we had a few different skewers of kebabs including lamb, beef, chicken, and vegetables. I'd recommend any of them! So this past Mother's Day, I chose to take a stand of sorts. You see, I'd just read that avocado prices were skyrocketing thanks in large part to its increased demand among hipsters. Hand to god, I really read this. You can't make this stuff up. But anyway, I decided that instead of celebrating the day at some precious, over-priced Avocado Toast pimping BK brunch spot, I was going to head to Queens for Kosher Uzbeki: We started with some Chebureks, flat, half-moon-shaped turnovers, stuffed in this case with ground lamb. We also got a pumpkin-filled Samcy, which as you can probably guess, is the Uzbeki equivalent of a Samosa. If you're only going to try one of these, go with the Cheburek, which I far preferred over the Samcy, marred, unfortunately, by an uber hard, brick-like crust. Cheburechnaya Salad was a random mix of the usual Mediterranean veggie suspects like cucumber and tomato, along with, would you believe, avocado wedges:), asparagus spears, and A LOT of sliced green olives. It was very minimally seasoned, if at all, and it tasted almost like it was only tossed with lemon juice. I sort of liked its refreshing simplicity. I didn't, however, like the Baba Ganoush, which I think was blended with mayo. Blech. We got a bunch of Kababs, with Beef Skirt, Boneless Chicken and Cubed Lamb standing out as the winners. "Best *kosher* meat I ever ate!" raved hubby. He didn't include the Luyla Kabob in his kudos because, alas, the ground lamb it was made with was VERY gamey. I usually don't mind that, but here its intense flavor overpowered both the aforementioned Kabob and the Pelemeni, aka dumplings, in soup that we also tried. If you're tempted to order the 'Sunny Lemonade,' you may want to think twice. It's actually a sickeningly sweet bottled soda. Indeed. I spotted a number of families clinking a toast to Mom with bottles of a vivid green beverage. Am guessing it was Tarhun, a carbonated Tarragon-flavored drink that looked far more intriguing than the sad excuse for Lemonade that we experienced. A word about the Noni Toki: Yeah that's right. Noni Toki. Should you wonder what it is when you see it on the not exactly descriptive menu, It's a huge bowl-shaped piece of Matzoh that is unceremoniously plopped directly on the table. If eight days of the stuff during Passover isn't enough for you, now's your chance. Fwiw, this place was mobbed with families by the time we left at 7:30. I also loved that they have lamb and veal hearts, not many restaurants carry hearts, it's my jam. Took 25 minutes or so for the meal to be ready but it well understood when it's always packed and busy. Hire more cooks to handle the load. The staff was ok, don't smile at all but in NYC who does, if you smile you probably high. In an attempt to step outside our narrow gastrointestinal boundaries, my husband and I made a visit to Cheburechnaya for dinner yesterday. Knowing near nothing about Eastern European cuisine (and, in fact, being barely able to pronounce the name of the restaurant), we came armed only with Yelp recommendations and an expectation-less appetite. Our meal began with an assortment of chebureki and samcy. Both are stuffed pastries, but the chebureki are flat like ravioli and fried, while the samcy are baked with a rounder and slightly thicker pastry. The chebureki arrived with a promising patina of sizzling grease, delivered to our table mere seconds after its baptism through a deep fryer. The mushroom chebureki was filled with a savory blend of chopped mushrooms and a light sauce that miraculously didn't soften the crispy wrapper. The potato chebureki made the fat carb lady in me sing. Smooth, mashed potato-like filling in a deep-fried wrapper? Dumpling fans, meet your new best buddy. The samcy were the next to arrive and we ordered two kinds of these as well. I'm usually not a fan of anything with pumpkin in it but something compelled me to order it this time and I was richly rewarded for the risk by the first bite. Shredded pumpkin is cooked with onion and a perfect medley of spices that cleverly drew the flavor of the pumpkin away from its usual sweet and dessert-like fate. Wrapped with a flaky pastry, this topped out as one of my surprise favorites of the night. Out of respect for my carnivorous husband, we also ordered what is called "samcy with ribS" on the menu, but it should really just be 'rib'. Singular. A large bone-in rib is wrapped with the same pastry, inviting one to simply approach it caveman style and hold it by one end like a drumstick while chewing on the other. In the end, that's just what my husband did. He gnawed at it unenthusiastically and shruggingly pronounced it "just okay". "Just okay" could actually describe the rest of our meal. Lamb and salmon skewers ended the meal with far less pizzaz, both being just a touch too dry and rescued only by the flavor-saving grace of flame broiled char. We found ourselves recycling the hot sauce that came with our cheburekis and samcies by dousing it all over our skewers in an effort to coax just a little more flavor out of our entrees. While the vinegary, salsa-like sauce helped plenty, there were also bottles of ketchup, pepper-marinated vinegar, and the somewhat incongruous but ever-ubiquitous bottle of Sriracha sauce available. Our multitudionous meal came out to about $17, helped largely by the inexpensiveness of our appetizers, each of which were only two bucks or less. Though we were clearly the foreigners in the mix, service was warm and prompt. To top it all off, it seems that Cheburechnya is one of few BYOB places in the area. We didn't take advantage of it this time, but since we've christened these chebureki as the perfect new drunk food, we may return with a few bottles in hand. read more

Cheburechnaya was a total win (thanks, Yelp!). Although I used to live a short walk from here, I never actually made it here. I am so glad that I finally came here. My roommate and I came after *weeks* of drooling over the reviews. It was after a long Monday at work and I just needed a great experience to turn the misery around. Mission: Complete. Miriam was so patient and took amazing care of us. She recommended a great beer (#9, please!) and affirmed that the dishes I heard about and wanted to have were indeed the right thing to do. The meat and mushroom cheburekis were great. They were crisp and light and did not overfill me at all. It was a pleasant surprise to see that they were mostly filled with hot air instead of gut filling meats and veggies. The green pilaf was good, a little dry, but very flavorful. We found that adding some of the chebureki sauce (or even the table-side Sriracha) helped keep the pilaf moist. The kabobs were what made my day. We started "light" with some skirt steak and some fat lamb. Drool. We *finished* with the regular lamb and the boneless chicken. The lamb kabobs were absolutely brilliant - tender and perfectly seasoned. All the kabobs were topped with the pickled onions. Yum. Overall, Cheburechnaya was a great experience. This was one of those places that I went to just to try a different cuisine - in this case, Central Asian food found in countries like Uzbekistan. My friend and I randomly chose several things off the menu. These included: -Chebureki - I noticed that the menu offers several varieties of these so I thought it must be popular. We got some with meat and also with vegetables. These things are these half moon shaped fried dough things that are very similar to empanadas. I recommend trying some - hot, juicy and crispy. -Green Pilaf - Rice dish with sauteed pieces of beef and onions in it. This was okay - it has a smoky flavor to it. -Dolma - This order came with several pieces of beef and rice wrapped in grape leaves. If you are familiar with stuffed grape leaves, you have an idea. Tastes slightly bitter but still satisfying. There are many other unfamiliar menu items I definitely will try in the future. I'm not entirely sure which ethnicity is best represented by Cheburechnaya. Is it Russian, Jewish, Ukrainian or Uzbek? Perhaps a combination of all of them but I don't think you'll care too much. It's a good place to celebrate an occasion as there's a lot of space and the food is cheap. My in laws live in the area and we have walked by this place many times, always looking at the elderly couples having a feast inside and wondering if the food is good. Well it turns out they know a thing or two about good food. We started our meal with an fresh Israeli salad - lettuce, tomato, cucumbers, olives, carrots, avocado, scallions and a couple of jalapenos were briskly mixed in with lemon and vinegar. I'm not a big salad person but this was good and balanced our meal since we ordered a bunch of meats. We also shared a small bowl of borscht. I've had borscht where the broth was more beefy. Theirs was more like a hearty vegetable soup. It was actually dark red from the abundance of beet. I liked this lighter, healthier version also. Of all the things I had here, my favorite was the Special Chebureki. It was my first time having this and I absolutely loved it. The fried dough was thin, crispy and airy. The pocket was full of deliciously juicy lamb which was lightly spiced allowing the flavor of the lamb to prominently come through. Lamb, as it turns out, is not a bad way to go over here. We got the lulya and lamb rib kebabs which were pretty decent though the ribs were a bit dry and chewy for my taste. If you dare, order a couple of the offals. We got the veal liver kebabs and fried cow brains. The brains were marinated in yolk and deliciously decadent. Think Egg Foo Young but much smaller, lighter, fluffier and umm... smarter. The veal liver kebabs were cooked medium like we ordered. Of the three kebabs we ordered, this was the tastiest. In addition to the casual, family friendly atmosphere, the service was excellent too. Our waitress informed us that it breaks her heart when someone comes in and doesn't order any of the kebabs. I hope we didn't disappoint. read more

I was surprised to find this in Queens and not Brighton Beach Brooklyn. Ravi's reviews are spot on. The bread is awesome! I wish I had Ravi's "Stan" experience so I could detect all of the subtle flavors. I felt the Pelmeni dumpling soup and borscht was better at Cafe Glechik in Brighton Beach. I probably didn't order the right menu items but never the less I felt it was very authentic for the Russian palate. The staff seems a little absent minded. We ordered French fries and she didn't bring them. The restaurant was not full and she did understand that we ordered fries she just didn't stay on top of the orders. They had Baltika beer but it was at room temperature. The lamb was grilled perfectly. It is worth coming back to and investigating more of the menu. read more

Came here with friends while visiting NYC. Everything was delicious. The chebureks were crispy on the outside, juicy on the inside. The manti were superb and of course the shashlik and plov were out of this world delicious. Definitely will be back again. read more
