I went to Checkered Flag VW service to diagnose a strange sound in my car. I was quoted their diagnosis fee which I was very cool with because the sound was driving me crazy. Once the tech looked at my car, the source of the mystery sound was discovered pretty quickly and problem was solved. When I went to check out, the service advisor halved the fee due to the diagnostics taking so little time. I really appreciate this as I agreed to pay the full fee. I've had mixed experiences here, and it really seems to depend on who you get at the front desk. Two of the staff members I've worked with have been incredibly kind, professional, and helpful. Unfortunately, I've also had experiences with others that felt dismissive and unaccommodating in the past. The biggest issue has been routine oil changes. The last two times I scheduled service, I specifically requested that I would be waiting for my vehicle. However, when I arrived, I was told I should take the shuttle instead and that they would call me when the vehicle was ready. Even after explaining that I planned to wait, my oil change still took more than four hours both times. I understand that dealerships can get busy, but for comparison, a quick-service oil change at other places is often completed in 60 minutes or less. Spending five-plus hours waiting for basic maintenance is difficult to justify. The technicians have done good work on my vehicle, but the inconsistency in customer service and the excessive wait times mean I'll likely be looking elsewhere for future oil changes. I bought an Atlas from Checkered Flag VW in 2024. sales guys were very nice, easy transaction. The Service side is a VERY different story. it's awful. impossible to get anyone from the dept actually on the phone. I went in for a routine inspection and they "suggested" $900+ I'm brake pads. seriously. I asked if it needed them to pass and they said "it's close so we want to do them." duh. I asked if I could wait and they got angry and confrontational, slapped a failed sticker on my car. I immediately took it to a local shop who said brakes were absolutely fine and passed the car. I get it's in Sales where dealers make their money. but this place is a straight racket. to boot, the free car washes and oil changes I got sold on are a total farce. they never do them. read more

AVOID THIS SERVICE CENTER AT ALL COST. My vehicle went through a rather large puddle which ended up causing it to misfire like crazy. I checked the ignition coils and spark plugs, and found that water had made its way into the spark plug wells, and worried I may have water intrusion and worse damage, I decided to file an insurance claim. This was back on December 19th, my car was towed to Volkswagen, because who better to diagnose a vehicle than people who work on them all day? I was wrong. To start off, wanna get ahold of someone? In service? The manager? Hell, the GM? Enjoy a voicemail, and when you leave one, you won't get a call back. Customer service here is a joke. I called this dealership and probably spoke to half of the Sales team trying to get in touch with someone in service and management, and left MANY voice mails. No calls back. The mechanic (who found it neccessary to tell me he had 20 years of experience), did a 200 dollar diagnostics to tell me that the car had a misfire (no kidding? I told you that), and to also tell my insurance company that a tear down would be needed to determine internal damage, and even at my request multiple times, refused to do a compression test when asked. He also stated that the issue with my car was not water related, but maintenance related, stating that my vehicle "has 1 off brand ignition coil, and 3 that were oem", and that I had "3 different spark plugs". It's a 5 cylinder engine, but somehow I only have 4 ignition coils? I've got the receipts to prove my spark plugs were OEM Bosch, too, and that they were replaced about 2 months ago too. The "aftermarket ignition coil", was NGK brand, funny how a 20 year technician doesn't know that VW has used NGK as their "OEM" many times. My insurance claim was denied based on his word. Imagine my surprise when I pull my spark plugs after getting my car back and there's rust on them. "No evidence of water damage"? I guess water doesn't cause metal to rust. Finally, a photo of my intake filter. Not only did they waste a month of my time, get my insurance claim denied, but they also manhandled and destroyed my intake filter. Thanks for that. I highly recommend going LITERALLY anywhere else but this place. Their service advisors don't answer, their technicians lie and think there's no way you could possibly know something about cars, and if you want to speak to the GM and management, you better show up at their door, because it's it might as well be the 1800's the way they treat phones. read more

1 Star - Worst Service Ever! Avoid Jay at All Costs! Jay at the Volkswagen auto shop is the absolute worst service advisor I've ever dealt with. He had my Tiguan for FIVE DAYS and failed miserably at basic communication. I had to call him every time because he clearly had no intention of keeping me updated. And when he did bother to call, he straight-up LIED--telling me my car was being worked on when, in reality, it was just sitting there untouched. The final straw? I showed up unannounced, and he was completely caught off guard. He tried to cover his tracks with another pathetic lie, saying he was "just about to call me"--but surprise, surprise, my car had NEVER even been looked at. Five days wasted, nothing done, and nothing but lies from Jay. If you want your car actually worked on and not just left to collect dust while a dishonest service guy feeds you nonsense, do yourself a favor and go to someone else. This is long overdue so it -- for sure -- will be a lengthy review. To me, the worst part about any car buying experience ( and at jewelry stores) is the sales person. That one person that sees you minding your business, pops out from nowhere immediately asking all these questions, and then tries to force you into buying a car that's never crossed your mind. It's a salesman's job of course to sell you the cars but I feel that it just drives people away. No pun intended. It's happened to me twice and I have stuck to Carvana and Vroom ever since. It wasn't like that here at Checkered Flag Volkswagen. Let's start by saying that they aren't commission based, so that takes some weight off. My husband and I visited, walked around the whole lot unbothered, and then sent an online inquiry about the new 2023 VW Taos I was interested in. Nick Rios then guided me via video through a virtual tour in and out of all the vehicles I was interested in. He pointed out all the features, exterior and interior details of it, and the price difference between each one. He even traveled to a sister dealership to show me the exact same car but different color. He was open to all and any questions and never seemed pushy to sell. The day my husband and I went to "test drive" and "just look" at the Taos was the day we drove it home. A brand new 2023 Taos SE 4Motion. Nick Rios was very personable, patient, he provided top tier customer service, and treated my husband and I like family. During the whole car buying process, he tried to find the best deal he could get for my 2019 Mini Cooper S trade-in, quotes for car insurance, and the most beneficial car packages to add-on. Nick went above and beyond the WHOLE time we were there and we were there for hours (12pm-7pm). Being by the door, it was cold outside and he offered to change the thermostat in his office to make sure it was warm enough for my husband and I. He would step away to give my husband and I ample time to talk and even asked if we wanted any snacks or drinks. Everything was always throughly explained and he was very upfront when it came to concerns we had. Lots of positive things we can go on about in describing the car buying experience with Nick but I won't write any more of a book. They aren't salespeople here but are more so customer service, so you'll always be greeted with a smile and given time to think. Everyone was super nice in this dealership and I doubt you'll ever get a bad worker here, but Nick Rios stood out to us, among all. My only complaints being the floor mats not being in the car when taking it off the lot and having to wait for them, and the rushed detail job they did on the car. Brand new car, I just felt like they could've slapped some mats in or had taken their time to detail it while we were doing all the paperwork. Outstanding sales and service from the start. I had never been to the dealer before but was already familiar with the strong Checkerd Flag name. However I was not familiar with the VW product line. I had dealings with four sales people. Gabby, Sarah, Daniel and another gentleman. All four excellent and knew VW products well. The show room is awesome with vintage Volkswagen cars and other items. The centerpiece is a totally restored 1963 Hippie van. Although I did not purchase from them they did everything right to make me feel comfortable with no pressure haggle free environment. I rarely ever give reviews, as every business has good and bad days, but the lack of service I received at Checkered Flag Volkswagen warranted a review. If you choose to get your car serviced here, expect to be lied to and receive the run around. In November, I went to get my oil changed. I made an appointment for 2:00pm. By 5:18pm, I did not get any calls/texts from my service advisor, Jay. I tried calling (3 times) and texting him and I could not get ahold of him. I decided to go there and as I walked in, Jay stated, "Oh I was just about to text you!" This was a lie, as when I asked about my car, he had to go check on my car status. When he got back, he told me that the technician working on my car left without notice (who knows if this was a lie as well) and no one has worked on my car yet. He told me that another technician will work on my car now. I then had to wait another hour in the lobby until my car was ready. I did not receive my car until 6:20pm. An oil change should not be an almost 4 and a half hour appointment. I decided to continue going here, thinking maybe this was a one time thing. I was wrong. At the beginning of this month, there was something wrong with my car so I dropped it off at Checkered Flag Volkswagen during their after hour drop off on Sunday. On Monday, I received a call in the morning, from Jay (who was my service advisor again). He asked me more details about my car and told me that I might not get my car until Tuesday as they were busy and I did not have an appointment. I told him that I completely understood and that was fine. Tuesday afternoon, I called asking about the status of my car (as I did not want what happened last time to occur again). Jay told me that my car is next in queue to be looked at and he will call me once they figure out what is wrong with my car. I never received a call for the rest of the day nor the next day. I tried calling Jay on Wednesday afternoon, 24 hours later, and could not get ahold of him. I decided to go there and ask him in person about the status of my car. He told me, again, that my car is next in queue to be looked at. I am not understanding how my car can be next in line for an entire 24 hours. At this point I am irritated and told Jay to give me back my car and that I am going somewhere else since no one has worked on it and he lied to me. He went to go get my car and took about 10 minutes. Come to find out, the reason why he took so long is that he had the audacity to put Checkered Flag license plate frames on my car. He put on these frames, knowing I was irritated and knowing they did not work on my car. This Checkered Flag Volkswagen is a joke. I took off the frames and decided to talk to the manager to let them know that the lack of service at this place is ridiculous. All she did was put the blame on Jay, telling me that she will talk to him and she is working on his communication skills. She did not try to fix this issue and also did not even acknowledge my statement about them putting their frames on my car, without my consent and without actually repairing my car. read more

I do not recommend this dealership. The sales part went fine, but the service department immediately began giving be problems and tried to straight rip me off. Even after a year they cannot find the time in their service schedule, despite being open from 7am-6pm on Saturday for me to bring in my car for a warranty issue. Not a issue of my creation mind you, but a warranty issue. Upon delivery of the vehicle there was a problem with the seat adjustment. It took several days to repair right out the gate. I should have just returned the damn thing within the first 3 days. Then i got a nail in the tire and they told me that the tire couldnt be repaired and that it was a $500 replacement (for a tire with less than 100 miles on it). The nail was not in the side or edge and i took to the discount tire down the road and they repaired in in 30m free of charge. That tire is still fine 10,000 miles later by the way. Now the steering wheel on the car is peeling worse than a sunbather without sunscreen and they can only schedule a service at a time when i am at work. DESPITE having Saturday hours. Avoid at all costs, or it will for sure, cost you more. read more

I've visited this location before, during and hopefully after the pandemic and I'm happy with the level of customer service. Shout out to Gabby who was my salesperson for my purchase. The service team is simply awesome and I like the feature of being able to go online and schedule your visit vs calling and hoping to get an appointment. Of note, safety items don't require an appointment and you can just come in. Located along Virginia Beach Blvd with many other car dealerships, this one is part of the Checkered Flag family. My only negative is that my credit was checked without my verbal or written consent by the manager who claimed he wanted to see if he could beat the low interest rate I had obtained in advance from my financial institution. It really pissed me off and the apology seemed watered down for such a deliberate action. They are capable of searching other areas for the color or model of your choice and are very responsive when buying, selling or for service. An overall positive experience. read more

Scheduled my first service appointment (oil change) at 2:00pm. Around 5:00pm I was told they wouldn't get to it today. Came back to get my car and Fatima was able to pull some strings to get it serviced. Now I'm not sure if I should be happy or disappointed...glad Fatima was able to get it in, but honestly 3-4 hours for an oil change? I'd advise maybe not making appointments that can't be kept? I scheduled an appointment by phone for a state inspection. I was told it was a drop off when in fact I said on the call that I wanted a timed appointment. At this point, I don't have much other time to do it. I signed up for their text alerts, which was useless since they never responded to any of my questions. When I called at 5 hours, I got multiple redirects to voice mails and then the third call was someone who couldn't give an updated time. It took 6-1/2 hours for a drop off state inspection and fill up tires, and then I needed to return immediately because they didn't reset any of the alerts on my car after saying everything was complete. I recommend going to Southern or Casey Volkswagen where they actually communicate with their customers and don't take all day to do a simple state inspection. read more

Driving down from MD and check engine light came on 30 miles north of Chesapeake Bridge Tunnel. Called while in transit and was able to pull right into the service center. Jeff was able to check the diagnostic and determine we were 4 qts low on oil in our 2021 Tiguan. He filled it and Amy the service manager did not charge us. Amazing service. We are able to enjoy the Eric Church concert we came down for! We are tied over til we can get to our dealer in Salisbury. Sales staff was also super nice and understanding. A friend bought a used car from Volkswagen Checkered Flag. Days later, the wheel fell off while he was driving. Luckily, he was in a parking lot or this would have caused serious injury or death. Even more frustrating for him is trying to get in touch with the dealership. After calling EVERY DAY for 2 weeks, he is still yet to hear from anyone that has any authority to handle the issue. He has emailed and left countless voicemails to Lee Brooks, the GM, and Jesus Vicente-Salas, the service manager, with no response. Considering he could have died, I would expect a timely response to this issue- Checkered Flag Volkswagen has let us down. I am very disappointed in how Checkered Flag Volkswagen has handled (or rather, avoided) this issue. To any buying a car in the future- good luck getting in touch with them if you have issues/questions afterwards. EDIT: Approaching a month from first contact with Checkered Flag... around the 3 week mark, Checkered Flag said they would contact the Alfa Romeo dealership fixing the car. These are great people to deal with. I had such a good expeiernce buying a car here, that eight months later I bought another for my wife. Same great, no-hassle sales experience from our salesman Ken. We continue to love both of our Passats. The service department has also been great to deal with. Krystle has taken very good care of us. Even on the second car we had a warranty issue, and she cleared it up for us very efficiently. The services and maintenances have been very competitively priced, and they are accurate with their scheduling estimates. They also provide a courtesy shuttle without distance limits, which is a great benefit. I give this entire dealership my highest recommendation. read more

Wish I could give zero stars. Brought car in for service and was missed quoted for fixing headlights. Then spoke to manager who said he would honor the price, then received a call saying my transmission was all of the sudden not working properly. I told them not to fix it and just fix headlights, came into pick up the car and they tried to charge original miss quote and they changed headlights from Led to OEM after I just had them installed. Terrible customer service and some of the workers are rude. I would not bring your car here and therefore I would not consider buying one either read more

I've been a customer of this dealership for 20 years over 4 cars. I'm not anymore. The sales experience has always been amazing. They really work with you and are willing to give discounts, etc to get you a good deal. I've never felt like anything shady has happened on the sales side. Aways transparent and they put all of the options in front of you. The service experience (management not techs) is awful, and that's why it's two stars. I've been lied to (confirmed by VWoA), given the run around, and had shoddy work done. The last time they worked on my VW they had to replace the clutch which was nearly dead when I bought it, turns out. They forgot to bolt my catalytic converter back in. The service manager lied to me and her management several times during that whole process. The sold me a car with an aftermarket tune and tried to deny it. They told me VW was covering 70% of the clutch cost, which was a lie, confirmed by VW customer support. The lack of transparency and outright lies are why they will never touch my car again. So should you buy here? Yes. Fantastic people. Should you go somewhere else for factory service? Yes. Without question. Something has happened to this dealership over the last few years that isn't good. read more

I purchased a used car with very low miles from Checkered Flag Volkswagen. 4 days afterwards, the front lower control arm mount had sheared. Thankfully this happened at low speed in a parking lot but I cannot imagine what would have came of this had it been on the highway. The nearest dealer received the car thanks to the manufacturer's complimentary roadside assistance program. It was not covered under warranty due to service neglegence and found Checkered Flag Volkswagen to be at fault from the service they performed prior to sale. I have been trying to get this resolved from Checkered Flag Volkswagen FOR THE PAST 2 WEEKS and after calling every day, emailing the general manager and service manager, I STILL HAVE NOT HEARD BACK FROM ANYONE ABOUT MY CASE. Even after getting a lawyer involved, I still have yet to hear of any cooperation on their end. The customer service at Checkered Flag is non-existent and it is reasonable to assume from this case that the only thing that concerns them is the sales figures. Terrible customer service. My husband and I purchased a brand new Atlas 3 months ago. A day after purchasing they had to take our car away to do an upgrade they forgot about. They also had to call several times and have us return to complete paperwork they also forgot about. We were promised someone would show us how to use the features on our car and no one called us or returned our calls to set something up. I also had a $500 voucher through our works partner program and it wasn't honored, and once again despite several phone calls, no one has called me back about it. Now, 3 months later they have the audacity to send me a letter in the mail asking for $80 for an accounting error they made. What a joke. I would not recommend them unless you like wasting your time.
