Always a line, always consistent, always worth it! Cheeseboard is a testimony to restaurants that specialize in one thing and do that one thing right. The combination of ingredients always fresh and never boring. A band plays at lunchtime so its never a dull moment. And the fact that the establishment is run as a co-op makes you feel good about eating there knowing that the $ is going directly into the pockets of the employees-owners who are serving you. Its perfect for visits with my daughter who devours the slice and a quarter they graciously give as a one slice pizza. There are side salads to choose from and some cookies but thats not what you are there for. The tables are euro pub style and you sit and share with others - makes for lively conversation with a 3 year old. Lots of hippie Berkeley students & despite being maybe the only Republican in there, I loved the taste of this organic pizza & toppings. Very busy on the Tuesday night I went. Despite the line out the door, they had an efficient way of running the business. They served one kind of pizza per day. This made the line go faster as people didn't spend 5 minutes deciding what they wanted. Also, one pizza per day made the cooking more efficient as they didn't have to study orders & no chance of messing up an order. I'm extremely glad I tried it before I left the Bay Area. Additionally, my friend & I ate in the median of busy Shattuck Ave, which was a common occurance at this place. I had never ate in the median of a busy road before. One choice daily of thin-crust, vegetarian pizza from a small, crowded place with limited seating. Doesn't sound like a promising experience, but this place is AMAZING. The line is long, but since they don't need to custom bake a half pepperoni/sausage/bell pepper and half tomato/garlic/chicken pizza with extra cheese for one group and a Hawaiian pizza with extra pineapples for the next, the line moves fast. Only one type of pizza is offered daily, which you can find on their website for the week (whatever it is, it will be good), so all you have to choose is whether you want a slice, half a pizza, or if you're going to be a pig and get a whole pizza. I, of course, chose the last option. Armed with an entire pie plus 3 extra slices that they threw on, my friend and I joined all the other people sitting on the grassy center divide across the street (a fun, casual solution to the limited seating space inside). Ah Cheeseboard, you bring back so many memories for me. Went here all the time back in school. It's pretty much a Berkeley rite of passage. If you haven't eaten here, you can't consider yourself a Golden Bear (unless you're lactose intolerant or allergic to wheat or something *THE MORE YOU KNOW*). I remember this place so fondly. Getting some friends and walking over on beautiful Shattuck right after a hard day of studying or lectures. Always super packed because this place is crazy popular but the wait is made easier when there's live music (there's a small space in the corner for the pianist and bassist, etc). The pizza always comes piping hot, just the way I like my pizza. You know it's fresh when you gotta blow off the steam. For the full Cheeseboard experience, you've gotta sit down with your pals on the grassy median right on Shattuck in the middle of the street. That is the quintessential Berkeley memory. Best thing is they always give you an extra small slice, making you feel like a freaking king. What a deal! However, I can't give it a full 5 rating because: -Back in my day, they used to charge a flat $2.50 per slice. Nowadays, they charge tax, which sucks! Because they only take cash, that convenience of giving them a Lincoln bill for two slices was so quick and easy, but now, you gotta mess around with change and all that. This blows! EDIT: Owner has notified that they have started taking credit cards since I've last been. -When I was a wee lad freshman, I had no problem with Cheeseboard not serving beer. Since then, a new and very similar pizza joint called Sliver opened up nearby that does serve beer, and wow did it open my eyes. Beer and pizza just go great together. You won't find tomato sauce, or plain mozzarella cheese at this place; instead they take the artisan cheeses from next door (Cheese Board sells cheeses and appears to have this pizza place as a side business), and combine them will oil sauces and creative fresh toppings. They only serve one pizza a day; but it will always be vegetarian, so there's no need to fear. I've also never come across a pizza here I haven't liked. A few I've run into include one covered in basil and pine nuts, one doused in lemon, onions, and arugula, and one whose main topping was eggplant. The pizza is a little pricey for the lack of customization, $20 per pie; but you can fill three people on a pizza, so in the end it's still pretty cheap for a day out. The only thing to be warned about is the crowd. There's always a large line, rarely anywhere to sit, and they run out of their widely popular green sauce quickly. But, even so, they're definitely worth a try. You'll probably find that dealing with the large crowd of fellow Cheese Board lovers is worth it. read more

Your flavors never cease to amaze me; from roasted potatoes to broccolini to fresh corn with chile pasilla (my favorite!!) to roma tomatoes (another one of my favorites!), you never seem to go wrong. After years of using yelp for reviews, I've chosen you to finally take my yelp virginity as I write my first review ever. Ok, but seriously, this place is awesome. I used to go to school at Berkeley, and Cheeseboard was worked into my weekly routine. Hell, I don't go to Berkeley anymore, and I still try to make Cheeseboard a monthly routine at least. Everyday, they have a different flavor of veggie pizza (almost all delicious), and they have a handy website that you can check so you know when they're serving your favorite combinations. Long lines aren't a problem here. The most you'll usually have to wait is about 20 minutes (but usually it isn't even this long). So if long lines have stopped you from checking this place out in the past, don't you dare let it stop you again! The hardest part about the dining process is usually finding a seat... but they do have seating inside and outside the restaurant. And lots of people end up just sitting out somewhere in the grass on the center divider across the street, especially when the weather is nice out. Back to the food... there's just something about the simplicity of their combinations of unique veggies and cheese on pizza that makes this place so mouth-watering. YUM! So my buddy calls me & say'S there is a band (California Honey Drops)playing Thursday night for a fund raiser so they can cut a new CD. As I'm driving up Shattuck I see 300 people standing on the sidewalk & even sitting out in the center divide of the Ave. He saves a place at the table & offer's me a slice of there Pizza & a Racer five ale($2.50).. The pizza is thin crust & they use no tomato sauce. The pie is excellent . The beer is priced right. The place has a friendly vibe,small family style seating area,you share long tables with the other guest & the band is sounding great. I remember going with a friend to find this island strip of grass where you can go sit and eat your pizza. I have heard so much about this place from friends who study in the Berkeley area. I came for lunch on a weekend with much enthusiasm and anticipation -- I mean, how good can pizza get, really? I was definitely not disappointed, and my dining experience exceeded satisfaction. There was a long line when we arrived, but it moved very quickly as there was only one type of pizza being served per day. You can order by the slice or whole, and receive it almost instantly. The bread/crust of the pizza was crisp and not too soft; the cheese was gooey and bubbly. The tomatoes were finely diced and sprinkled appropriately on top. The hot pesto sauce adds a real kick to the senses and definitely boosted up the flavor! One thing I would point out is that the pizza itself is very oily -- but other than that, it was heavenly! Definitely one of the better pizza joints I have been to in the Bay. The establishment itself is not nearly spacious enough to accommodate the high volume of guests. We lingered by a table of guests who were just about to finish their meal and was lucky enough to grab the space. College students usually grab their pizzas, pull out a towel, and have a nice picnic in the traffic median. How relaxing! The restaurant also had live music playing when we were there, which definitely added to the friendly, social vibe. Cheeseboard is possibly the staple food I think of when my mind wanders to the general idea of "Berkeley". A gem of Berkeley for sure. Every single pizza has been outstanding! The sweet corn is a well-loved favorite. : ) Whenever I go, I've usually ordered a whole pizza. Always two extra slices and always fast (even though the line seems like the wait will be long..it is is only about 7min on average and at most 15min from my personal experience). Still good after a day or two. I do not have an opinion as to whether Cheeseboard or Sliver is better, but I think I will always have more affection and preference for Cheeseboard.
