Aw man. Again and again in my life I keep realizing that there are truly finer things in life. First with learning of the existence of the Maybach (plz look it up), now this. Here's the quick and short: this place is a quaint and appetizing place to buy cheese. Here's the slow and long: The CC is located on the outskirts of where you wanna raise your kids - Claremont. You could probably bring a Rottweiler that has been raised in dog fighting matches to this place, and after five minutes, it will have the disposition of a poodle raised in Greenwich, CT. But back to the point - parking will be dependent on the time you get there, I went on a Sunday around midday so it was pretty easy. When you go inside, the staff is extremely courteous. It's not too big of a place, probably the size of a high school classroom, but it's in no way related in experience. There are books, tools for cutting/dicing, and of course cheese. Like I said earlier on, I realized I've never had the finer things in life. Before coming here, the best cheese I have ever had was cheez wiz and kraft from Kroger's. I mean that's what I typically bought, but this changes here. But this place. The cheese is "fire." Urban Dictionary that. I didn't get a cheese plate because the cash is tight right now, but I did get some crackers and a few of their cheeses that came out to around $35. Let me tell you, those crackers. That cheese. I can never eat Nabisco saltine crackers and Kraft cheese and call myself satisfied. If you're ever not mesmerized by LA, and have a chance to explore somewhere else within that vicinity of Southern California. Please, take a trip down to Claremont and experience this area. This place is awesome, long story short, reminds of a butcher shop, but instead of meat, there is cheese. There are cheese's from around the world here and they are amazing. Of course there are still the meats that go with cheese and crackers, etc...but overall I recommend this place if you are a cheese fanatic like me. Only thing to add is to be sure to get your cheese that you like in a decent order size because they do not regularly have the exact same cheese in stock as it is shipped from around the world, your cheese may not be there when you come back. Great thing is they took my number down to let me know when it is back in stock. Rest assured, there are plenty of alternatives there if the one you were looking for is not there when you come back for a refill. I recommend this place!! read more

An array of olive oils, nuts, chocolate, wine, beer etc. Cheese experts truly know their stuff. I wish they had a more inclusive selection. There was at most 20 cheeses - a few basics (brie, sheep, goat, fontina) and I guess I was expecting more of a variety. If I recall there was one wedge of blue cheese. This little shop is a small cave with a mini fridge size selection of cheese and a minibar size meat selection. Maybe I came on an off day and the new stock hadn't arrived? It's best to come here for the selection of pâté which are smooth and delicious. Ah, Marnie and Lyddie. Where would I be without you? Probably in some cave without cheese. I was here on National Cheese Lovers Day last Thursday (The 20th, which I learned of, after the fact) and Marnie was entirely present, giving me the utmost care and attention in educating me and assisting me on what cheese to try or buy. Her smile's as authentic as the cheeses they serve here. "Cheese!" and smiling go together, I guess. I spent maybe an hour and sampled so many different cheeses ranging from Piave (a younger and milder version of Parmiggiano Reggiano, which also hails from Parma) to Gruyere. I was afraid I was taking time away from other customers, but fortunately for me, there wasn't a mob that day. She's unpretentious and talked to me on the same level. That's a huge plus considering the fact that my knowledge only goes as far as: Cheddar, American, Swiss, Mozzarella, Parmesan, Monterey Jack, Nacho and the powdery packets they put in boxes of macaroni. It helped that I did an online research of cheeses I wanted to try and brought the list with me. The store's roughly a third or a quarter of the size of the Beverly Hills Cheese Store, but with a strikingly solid selection of cheeses and competitive prices that beat them hands down. It's nearly $15/half lb for most of the cheeses at Beverly Hills and they sometimes give a small discount, whereas most of the cheeses at Claremont's Cheese Cave already range from about $6 - $12.50/half lb. I was amazed that they carried select beers from The Bruery, The Lost Abbey, Dale Brothers, and Affligem to name a few, since they're not usually associated with cheese pairings. Don't worry, they have select wines, olives, cooking oil, balsamic vinegars, crackers, duck pate, sauces, chocolates, nuts, and other fancy shtuff to help make the cheese taste better. Like a soda fountain, they have mini vats of olive oil and balsamic vinegar made especially for refillable bottles, which can be bought from their store. Lyddie gave me a sample of sweetened sesame covered cashews. Yes, I said, "Mmmmm..." In addition, Cheese Cave's cheeses have tiny picket signs posted on them like a call to arms, explaining the name of the cheese, the price per half pound, the milk it's made from (cow, sheep, goat, other, or a combination), the location where it originated (Switzerland, USA, Italy, France, and so on...), and a brief back story with notes on how they taste. Ooh, ooh, and you know what? They write the name of the cheese and the source of the milk on the wrapper or container when you buy it. I like the Beverly Hills' Cheese Store, but they don't do that. To get you started, I bought the following: Le Marechal (Switzerland, Cow) $12.50 per 1/2 lb -Quasi hard -Slightly sweet -The rind's nutty with herbs (rosemary and thyme I believe?) -Creamier than Cheddar and a texture lighter than Edam -There's a minimal hint of sharpness -Very faint Blue Cheese taste Delice de Bourgogne (France, Cow) $10.50 per 1/2 lb -It tastes sinful to me -Lingering finish -Mildly salty taste up front -Similar to brie, but firmer -Buttery, creamy on the tongue -Similar to cream cheese in texture, but softer -Negligible Blue Cheese bite in the back of the throat -Rind crumbles and contrasts its creaminess with a prickly sensation -Rind gives my tongue "brain freeze" with the texture of oatmeal or grits Montagne du Jura (Switzerland, Cow) $14.00 per 1/2 lb -Rich and nutty taste -Smooth yet firm texture -Earthy and kind of mushroom-like -Similar to Gruyere and probably goes well with dry white wine -Mildly sweet especially pressed in between the tongue and the roof of my mouth -Rind is super grassy -Aged 6 months I want to go back and get La Tur (Italy, Cow/Sheep/Goat) and Brillat Savarin (France, Cow). They allow samples of every cheese in their case and can help you pack home any amount you wish. Finally made it to this place; I'm clearing out those bookmarks one-by-one. I didn't get a chance to buy any cheese this time (I still had a lot of running around to do and u don't want cheese sitting in the car) but I did get to try one of their sandwiches. And, it was really good! I had the smoked salmon with i believe was a honey chedder (or something like that). Anyways, the sandwich was really good. First off, I enjoyed the bread, they got it right and a lot of sandwich places don't. The sandwich wasn't overly complicated either, just good smoked salmon, good cheese and a good spread (i can't remember what kind of spread came with it; this is shaping up to be a vague review. ah well). The thing I really liked about this sandwich was the salmon and the cheese was forefront. I like that they were able to highlight the main ingredients and not lose them in an effort to dress the sandwich up. Really good! My husband, fellow Yelper Jim W and I decided to check it out last Saturday in homage to our mutual love of cheese. What an experience! They have all the world's best things in this shop: cheese, chocolate and wine. I mean, I could die here and have everything I need for the afterlife. They really know their stuff. Not only did I enjoy trying a number of cheeses but I got a real education before I made my purchase. It's important to go in with an open mind. I told the very knowledgeable counterman (I think his name was Sean) that I don't like blues or swiss. Of the three cheeses we brought home, one was a blue and one was a swiss. Clearly once you get to that level of cheese, old preconceptions no longer hold. I can't wait to go back. In this wonderful, quaint village called Claremont, sits this amazing cheese shop..... or should I say, cheese and everything else gourmet kind of shop. OMG, I LOVE THIS STORE....... I wish we could have spent more time in here, and I really wish I bought some of the many things I wanted to buy.......everything I looked at sounded so interesting, tasty, inviting..........it was a little pricey, however, but that normally doesn't stop me if I'm really interested. I was kind of in a hurry, so I didn't invest my time or thoughts into buying anything...... I just browsed, and now, I'm sorry that's all I did. My niece is home now for Winter break, but when she returns, so will we.... to visit her...... and guess what......we're coming back to THIS store, so I can buy some really cool things.......food and otherwise. I happened to be in the area during a "grand opening" event with tastings for this small Claremont Village gourmet cheese shop. It turned out that this place had been open for more than a month but perhaps it is a good thing that they continue to have opening events with free samples. Rather than sampling the cheeses alone, this shop has prepared a variety of appetizers that incorporate the cheese, presumably to broaden the appeal beyond the small audience of gourmet cheese lovers. The shop is small and has a small dining area at the back. Less than half of the space is devoted to cheese with the dining area and various other gourmet items occupying the remaining space. Their cheese counters showcased a small but well chosen selection of some of the better rated cheeses from across the US and some imported varieties. The selection suggests that the shop is seeking to represent some of the best of a wide variety of cheeses rather than focusing on regional or other specific types of cheeses. This shop makes a nice addition to this area and I hope it can survive given the small market for these high priced gourmet items. read more

Went here for lunch with my mother. The selection of cheeses was great...and they offered samples and whatever help I needed. The staff was super nice. We just got some sandwiches, which were simple, yet superb. I got the blue cheese and asian pear on a baguette, a ginger beer on the side and some dried fruit as well. We sat at a large square table in the back (with another nice lady who was a regular)...it felt like we were part of the family...it was great. Four years ago, I was volunteering alongside a lady, and she told me her daughter had this amazing idea how she wanted to open her own cheese shop up Yale St in the Village. At the time, it sounded like some fancy, dreamed up idea. I never imagined that a year later the shop would opened, but I'm so glad it did! I've literally loved every cheese they've had here. They have so many choices, and the people there are friendly and helpful! This place definitely makes me proud to call Claremont my hometown. This is a fun little excursion like no other in the area. Enter the shop and you will be greeted by an interesting pungent odor and a large silver cow donning the latest fashion of the season. Go ahead, pet her, she's really sweet. Then venture over to the glass case and put on your best Puss 'N Boots face as you gaze longingly at the cheese. In no time at all, one of the knowledgeable servers will take pity on you and offer you a sample. We did the above and earned our samples, and then some! In fact, we walked out with about four different types of cheese, and a cheese hatchet! (Look out cheese burglars, mice, rats, etc., we are armed!) We also walked out with a touch of sticker shock and imagined the storehouse of crappy velveta we could have purchased at the supermarket. But, we have no regrets. This stuff is remarkable! This review is a loooooong time coming. I LOVE CHEESE! I love eating it, cooking with it, experimenting with it. I have visited the Cheese Cave on numerous occasions and they never disappoint. Staff is incredibly knowledgeable of their products and provide spectacular customer service. I usually go in to get my usual hunk of Midnight Moon, Tartufo Al Boschetto, sopressata and prosciutto. I will always ask for recommendations based on a couple words I can throw out there to define cheese preferences: mild, semi soft, crowd pleaser, picky eaters -- and they always come back at me with samples of items that everyone loves. Lets pile on the love, shall we? Marnie, Lyddie, friends and even mom make up the staff at the Cheese Cave and I really cannot say enough good things about the cavers. Sorry. I call them that. Not sure if they want to hug me or hit me when I walk in and say hello cavers! So many good and spot on things have already been said in the other love fest posts. Here are some of the things that stand out for me. 1. Passion. They all have it. They love what they do. They also love to inform and educate. You might wait a few moments more than another cheese place but that is because they will dote on you when they get to you. Samples will be had, questions will be asked and their knowledge will be bestowed upon you. 2. So you go home, have a cheese and have an OMG I love this moment. You then head back to the cave and forget the name of it. Do not worry. They set up an account for you and mark everything you got and when. So, if they ask for your information, it is not be to pester you with emails. 3. They are constantly looking for new things to add to the store. I can go in a few weeks apart and see totally different offerings as well as their standard items. 4. When we talk about items. It is not just cheese, but meats, honey, nuts, salts, peppers, mustards, olive oils, root beers, etc etc etc and its always changing. 5. They also make sandwiches every day (pats belly) There are so many other things but you get the idea. I love to see people love what they do and more importantly care about what they do. You can see it ooze from them and lucky you, you get to be the recipient of it! Also, I hate calling people out, but, Robert with the 3 star review totally baffles me. I'd love to come here when I am, though, so I can get some wines & cheeses and have a classy little party haha Oh & their sandwiches are good!! My boyfriend and I stopped by here when they were close to closing, maybe an hour before? And they gave us sandwiches for 50% off! I know it's because they were sitting there all day but they still tasted good & really fresh! As we were doing so, a man from the inside of the store rudely asks us to move away as he gives another person who standing there, their order. He didn't even bother to say "how can I help you" or "thanks for showing interest but please place your order online". I just popped in this week to check out the cheese selection (which looks pretty extensive) and asked if they had anything to take on the road. Indeed, they had just packaged some baguette sandwiches- two choices I believe: one was a vegetarian. I opted for the Salami with New Zealand Cheddar and a vanilla bean jam of some kind. Great. Brilliant and lovely little gourmet shop and cheese store in downtown Claremont...with wine and beer I must add. Stopped by at the red of a friend and asked for a few cheeses to take to a cocktail party, the young man working gave me some lovely suggestions. I also picked up a luncheon salad: lentils with fresh picked greens in a vinaigrette. They also carefully assembled what they call a "snack pack": three kinds of cheese, nuts, dried fruit, etc. The service is top notch 5 star friendly and knowledgable. I've been to multiple cheese shops in LA County, Orange County, and San Bernardino County, and I have to say this one is my new favorite. First of all, the name, The Cheese Cave!? So cute! It's like I died and went to cheese heaven. Second, they have great customer service. The girls I encountered who worked there were kind and helpful, and obvious cheese lovers. They are the exact people you want to talk to about your favorite creamy indulgences. Plus, they were quite generous with the cheese samples :) And what a cheese selection. Some of the best cheeses I have ever had--amazing wines from unknown wineries--artisan beers--you can't go wrong when you set foot in this store. And that's just the product. The service is above and beyond. They treat customer service like a game and love every second of it. Every time I go in, I ask them to surprise me--give me something new. They always accept the challenge, and each time I leave with one of the craziest, most interesting cheeses I have ever eaten. Example: yesterday I asked for 2 raw, European goat cheeses and an interesting wine pairing. The employee who helped me was insanely knowledgeable and took 20 minutes planning a perfect combination for me.
