I love cheese even though cheese doesn't love me. The Cheese Cave has a great variety of cheese and meats. They even have pate! I always get the their weekly snack pack to try different cheeses. The staff is friendly and very knowledgeable. You can tell them what kind of cheese you are looking for and they provide recommendations and samples. Their recommendations are usually on point. I end up getting more than I should. They also have other items such as crackers, pasta, beer, wine, books, and cheese accessories. I think I found a new place to satisfy my love for cheese. Cheese Cave has only been open for a short time, but I think this cheese shop will do quite well in Claremont. The cheese selection is not large, but they do have a good variety of raw milk and pasteurized cheeses from cow, goat, and sheep. You'll find your soft and hard cheeses too in the case ready to cut for your order. There is a meat and olive case next to the main cheese case. A side case contains pre-packaged cheeses from Cowgirl Creamery and a few other local cheesemakers. Cheese Cave also has a variety of dry goods on their shelves such as cabernet pastas. They sell books about cheese and those who are in the industry. The sisters (owners) behind the counter are wonderful. They are very willing to answer any questions you have or provide helpful suggestions to the types of cheeses you may or may not want to try. We ended up buying several cheeses and tasting even more one Sunday. They were all cheeses we had never tasted before until that day. We bought Mimolette (France's version of cheddar), Cahill Porter (an Irish cheese that uses porter beer in the making/aging process), Tarentaise (a Wisconsin cheese), and Cabecous Feuilles (another French cheese that is soft and wrapped in plum leaves). We took all of them with us to the Hollywood Bowl. The biggest hits of the night were the Cahill Porter and the Cabecous Feuilles (which also had bits of peppercorn). We are definitely coming back here again. If you're in the area, this is a must stop to make while in Claremont. read more

Wow! As I was walking in, I got a wave of amazing smells. My grandma, mom and myself had lunch at Walter's, across the street. My grandma has been raving about this place for awhile. She loves coming in quite often to try different cheeses. I love the layout of the store and how nice the workers are, even though we came in right before they closed. They also offered me a cold pack for my food in the to-go box. Thanks for keeping my tuna sandwich cold. =) They let us sample a few of my grandma's favorite cheeses. I tried cotswold and loved it. The staff is so helpful and polite, but most importantly there are some delicious food items in this shop! I absolutely love the balsamic vinegar and oil olives that come in refillable glass bottles. There are a good selection of cheeses as well as lots of cheese utensils. The wine selection is lovely with lots of interesting choices. Too bad I live in LA or else I would come here more often. I recently moved to Claremont from Pasadena and to my surprise the grocery stores don't carry a lot of my favorite cheese's. I've been spoiled with amazing cheese. I LOVE IT HERE!!!!! The staff is incredible, and if you get to know them, they will tell you which days to come in to pick up the freshest mozz! Tons of samples and awesome gourmet foods. The sandwiches are grand and half-priced later in the day. There are also regular specials and a little basket of small pieces that are very cheap. Sometimes they have demonstrations or visitors who are also amazing foodies who can explain their work to you and give delicious samples. Great food, great service. They provide a cheese party platter with all the fixings for my work holiday party - various kinds of crackers, bread, cured meats, nuts, dried fruit, and the cheese! Must have been 8-10 varieties of hard and soft cheeses. Don't remember their names but they were delicious and each had it's own label (so if you were curious). This place is awesome! Been waiting for a cheese shop like this for a while that is closer to me. Staff are very friendly, they don't rush you and give a lot of recommendation, selection are pretty good as they rotates the cheese every so often and bring is whats "in season". I'll add my five stars. How can it be less? The guy (tall w/ glasses, sorry, I'm come back again and get to know you all!) gave us a number of samples based on what we thought we wanted. We settled on the most delicious cheese, the one that made me want to take a huge chunk and just gobble it all while wearing a pair of fuzzy slippers. That's actually the image that came to mind when I tasted it, the cheese was so good and comforting. I like that they have various accoutrement to go along with, like the lovely rosemary crackers we bought to serve the cheese. This place is really cool and not snobby in the least. Claremont can get uppity sometimes, so that is a super bonus. I will be back. Again and again. P.S. After we floated our of there, high on amazing cheese, we looked at the receipt. The Cheese Cave is a wonderful place. I've seen this shop grow from its very early stages and I am impressed every time that I walk in. Marnie and Lyddie are passionate about cheese and cannot wait to share their love of food. When the store first opened, they have a few tasty items on their shelves, but now they are packed full with a large variety of gourmet foods. Their shelved items make great gifts and everything that I've tried is delicious. I also plan to start buying their bulk olive oil. The first time that I walked into the Cheese Cave I knew almost nothing about cheese. Marnie and Lyddie have educated me slowly and they never stop changing their selection and variety. I think I've tried over 40 cheeses by now. Also worth mentioning is their now ample selection of local craft beers. They are one of the only stores in the area that sells one of my favorite brews, Dale Bros. Pomona Queen. They even recommend beer and cheese pairings! For the last couple of months, the Cheese Cave has been selling sandwiches of the day that feature some very creative combinations. I've only had a couple of the sandwiches, but I've loved all of them. Today I had a baguette sandwich with Pink Lady apples, cinnamon, apple butter, and some type of Swissy cheese. It was delicious. Overall, I know that I love this store because I always leave with a smile and something delicious in hand. Ever since I came back from Paris, I really wanted to know more about the different types of cheese and meats. I wanted to look for a place close by that suited my needs. Turns out, this place was perfect for a newbie like me! I talked with Sean and he pretty much helped me for 30 minutes. Amazing! I ordered a large cheese and meat platter for cocktail hour at my mom's birthday party and it was a hit. Unfortunately I did not take a picture, but it looked beautiful and classy. I love living in Claremont but this really puts this town over the top.. I wish we had a restaurant or 3 on par with the Cheese Cave, we should! The staff/owners are amazingly sweet and patient with helping me and everyone else make important cheese decisions no matter how busy. I couldn't be happier to see the Cheese Cave open. Before when I had wanted serious cheese, I had to drive to the Cheese Store of Silver Lake. Sure there are some places where you can get a Humbolt Fog fix, but now we have some serious cheese nerds who are not only willing but eager to taste you through the a pointe selections of the day to get you to the cheese you're craving. Bottom line: they're very serious about cheese and have a good, high quality selection, but unpretentious and very friendly. Everyone who works there (especially Marnie and Lyddie) is a cheese genius, and they're happy to help you find the perfect cheese to meet whatever challenge you throw at them. They manage to do this without seeming pushy or pretentious, and I always walk out with a delightful selection of delicious cheeses I didn't know existed an hour ago. Don't like alpine cheeses but really want to find one for some weird reason? No problem! They found me one I loved. Need a cheese that reminds you of the ocean (long story)? They helped me pick out two that fit the bill! Just like extra sharp cheddar? Awesome, they've got you covered. There's cheese for a wide variety of budgets, starting at little more expensive than supermarket deli cheese. The sandwiches are fantastic, but they go fast. There's a surprisingly good selection of cured meats as well, so be sure to check out the far left end of the counter. The walls are lined with fancy honeys, pickles, and just about anything else tasty that comes in a jar. There's also a stock of interesting beers and sodas if all that cheese makes you thirsty. I have taken to getting "thank you" presents at the Cheese Cave, and so far everyone has absolutely loved them. When I first arrived I wasn't sure how it was going to go. I like cheese and I've recently started trying to get into it. I was quite surprised, the abundance of what they had was very nice. Cheeses, sauces, beers, etc. I would've liked to try them all. The staff members were approachable and easy to talk to. To get a good taste of many things I got a snack pack. The meats and cheeses and fruits were good but I was kind of disappointed in the nuts (not like cashews or almonds but they're corn nuts which I don't care for). Crackers were also far too few with maybe 5 long ones. Grab some of your own from a store. I also got a third pound of the Il Boschetto al Tartufo which was a really nice cheese, I would recommend it if you like mushrooms and garlic with a creamy cheese. I don't recall the snack pack cheese names but 2/3 of them were pretty good. I would've liked a sandwich but when we got there they only had one remaining and it looked like it had been there a while. I will come back again some day! read more

I can't believe it's taken me this long to write a review for this place! The Cheese Cave is an absolute gem. It is literally one of the only reasons I still go out of my way to visit the Claremont Village (the creamery, the Italian restaurant next to the All-American cafe, and yogurtland are also nice). The store is always spotless, filled with wonderful nibbles and drinks, and the staff are beyond friendly. I go there so often they've begun to recognize me! They have a very nice selection of cheeses. Perhaps not the widest variety imaginable but what they do have is great. They're also very generous about allowing samples and so you'll find out if you like something or not! It's also great because it allows you to try new things. Some of their products are more expensive than others (it is Claremont, after all, and a lot of their cheeses/foods/drinks are imported and labor intensive). But you can also buy them by the half pound or quarter pound to cut the price (they don't act snobbish about it if you try to cut your price :9). All in all I am a huge fan of the cheese cave and I shall be returning for many more days. read more

Claremont is easily comparable to Larchmont Village although, I'm much more partial to Larchmont since my heart lies in LA. But anyways, the Cheese Cave in Claremont is as good as it gets. I recently discovered this small cheese shop run by two young sisters, Marnie and Lyddie. Marnie, Lyddie, and their staff are extremely friendly and impressively knowledgeable about every single cheese in that enormous case. They know what kind of cheese it is (goat,sheep,cow), what the cheese is called, where it comes from, and how it tastes. It wows me everytime! Apparently they've only recently started to serve sandwiches and I'm glad they did! You can't go wrong with the Fresh Ricotta and Roasted Tomato with Balsamic Vinegar. Simply delicious! read more

Anyway, I am really liking the Village these days, I'm also really liking the cheese cave. They girls working when I went in were super nice and gave us some samples based on what we said we like. I purchased 2 selections and realized the prices are $X/ half pound not per pound. I was still happy with what I bought, but it is pretty expensive to pay ~$30-$40 for a pound of cheese. This ain't your Kraft block of cheddar! They were sold out of sandwiches when I went after work but I hope to try one soon! read more

What a neat little place. We walked in when we saw a crowd standing around the counter ordering sandwiches. We browsed around and noticed a coffee that is originally from SF. We loved that coffee and it was aromatic. They have some great finds and is a perfect place for someone who's a total wino + cheese. The next time we went over and ordered some cheese sandwiches. The sandwiches were dainty but you can tell everything in it is of good quality. Great bread, delicious cheese, and nice fixings. They even give us a side of mini pickles and corn nuts. I dont know if they're from the bag or not but they're huge. Too bad they only have one or two tables in the store. I really wanted to see a real cheese cave but hence, it's only a name. read more

I've gotten cheese here a couple of times for some house parties. It's tasty and they have a good variety. (Probably the best place for quality cheeses in Claremont--I think they have a monopoly) I also really like the jams they have on available (think balsalmic honey cherry and onion confit). This was a random stop after brunch in Claremont and an afternoon meeting in Chino. My friend and I were browsing the streets when she spotted this shop. We darted across the street as she proclaimed her love for cheese. It wasn't too appealing on the outside that it would call me in, but I'm glad her overwhelming love for cheese brought me in. I wasn't in a cheese mood, so I browsed everything else. They have quite a few items that were also at Artisinal LA, they make their own balsamic vinegar that you buy by the weight, I assume? They had most ingredients you'd want in your kitchen if you like to cook or bake, sheep milk yogurt, European style butter packaged like a roll of cookie dough, goat milk chocolate, habanero chips and best of all...they have dill pickle chips (which I've been desperately craving since I finished my last bag of Zapp's from Louisiana)!! The habanero and dill pickle chips are by Route 11. The habanero have to be THE hottest chips I've ever had, but not the tastiest? My lips are still on fire. The dill pickle is good, but Zapp's is still the winner. Service was AWESOME. Considering all the service I required was being rung up, the nice lady (didn't catch her name) was super helpful. We got to talking about one of their suppliers and how we can make custom orders, she described a drink we were curious about, she made suggestions for pairings for a jam the friend bought, and she even offered to whip me up something I sampled that I would have to buy separately. read more
