Estimated delivery was 40 to 50 minutes after my order, and my food arrived 30 minutes late! Stopped in to pick up some salami and a nice cheese for a snack and asked for a couple of slices of a nice Scottish Cheddar to go. The emplyee looked down his nose at me and with a snotty tone said "We don't slice cheese here." I had to resist the urge to snottily ask if they cut the cheese instead. I'm shocked this place has such bad reviews! My mother and I were in Southampton the other day for the first time in ages and just happened to be walking by the Village Cheese Shop at lunch time. They had enough vegetarian options on the menu that it was tough to pick, but we ended up sharing "The German" (melted Munster, avocado, greens, tomato, mustard, and red onion on German style health bread) and a cup of the white bean and spinach soup. Both were excellent! The server was a bit dour, but honestly the food was so good I didn't care, and as a local, I can also understand what might lead someone working in a high traffic place like this to not manage huge enthusiasm 24/7. Plus she very nicely made the sandwich half without onions for my mom. The ambience is charming, and they have lots of good looking snack-y items that aren't just Cheetos and potato chips (way to keep up with the times Cheese Shop!). The prices are standard for the Hamptons, but the quality was so much better than what you'd get at the Golden Pear. I really can't wait to go back and try some of the salads they had. read more

Look, I have read all the horrific reviews here and it is a shame! We have been regulars here for almost two years and I don't know of a better place in town for breakfast or lunch for the price and quality of the food. It may have taken us a little while to acquaint ourselves with owners before we became fans, but that is sometimes just the way life is. I would always go to the Cheese shop and get either the Tuscan Panini or the Great Northern (grilled chicken, aioli, pancetta, ciabatta) sandwich. both are very good, and a good notch above what you'll find at most other delis in down (Schmidt's deli comes close, though). they also have lots of imported goods - capers, olives, chocolate, haribo gummy things, interesting chips and crackers. a minus - parking stinks on main street in the summer. park around back - no really, just leave your car there - and walk around the village. read more

I'm really surprised that Village Cheese shop has such brutal reviews. We were in town for the weekend and stopped in for breakfast. Worst service ever? Definitely not. Did they mess up our order? ... Yes. But it was a pretty great flagel (I had no idea what the heck that was either. It's a flat bagel. I don't want to know how they flatten it.) sandwich with some fresh manchego from behind the cheese counter. Although they were confused when I asked for cheese from behind the cheese counter (it is a cheese shop for god sakes!), I don't care that much about bad service from a bagel place. The food was good and it was a good way to start the day. The coffee? Meh. But I had some at the hotel before that anyway so I was good to go. Would I recommend this as a destination? They just got new owners and I was extremely disappointed with my food. My breakfast wrap was soggy, cold, and runny. My friend got a turkey and tomato sandwich and the tomatoes were CHERRY tomatoes, which you don't put on a sandwich!! My other friend got a bacon egg and cheese and they forgot the bacon. For a business that completely pivoted to accommodate covid 19 new norms, my family and I were so delighted that we could still get our old faves..the menu items we've loved for years; specialty sandwiches, chopped salads, amazing soups..always made fresh to order. The process is so much improved..simply order on line and pick up im about 30 mins. We prefer that to waiting on line, but the in-person experience works well. The staff is so friendly (they've effortlessly learned all of our names and have come to know our preferences) and the food is SO delicious. They also stock the BEST selection of healthier snack foods on main street. My family would not eat as well were it not for this gem of a place. I am not one to ever write a review, but this had to be shared. I have been frequenting the Cheese Shoppe due to its convenient location for some time. With the new ownership things have unfortunately steadily declined while prices have skyrocketed. Today I ordered a salad totaling $15 which is high but not insane for the inflated Hamptons pricing. What I received was a small container of spinach, with 5 chickpeas, perhaps two pieces of chicken about the size of a dime, and maybe four pieces of beets. The wait time is 45 mins plus, quality is sub par, and prices are insane. The girls that work there are always pleasant but please avoid this place there are plenty of other options in the village. read more

I have been a customer for years and was never fond of the owners, they are rude and unpleasant in general. I literally go there 7 days a week from May to September and had a very unpleasant experience. The salad my daughter was eating had a bug in it and they refused to give me my money back. I have been in the customer service business for almost 30 years and was appalled that I was treated that way especially because they know that I was a good customer. I love the layed back atmosphere of the place...I haven't been back to Southampton in a while...I hope it hasn't changed! The cheeses, meats, salads, sandwiches, coffee,well...all of it ...wonderful! do they still hire kids from Southampton College to work there in the summer? I didn't even try the food here because the service was so AWFUL! First off there was one employee behind the sandwich counter with 20 people waiting, it was taking forever!! I decided to not get anything however a friend saw a cheese she wanted to try, the price was clearly written, and she asked for a quarter pound. The guy who served her not only increased the weight however insisted that the price of the cheese was $5 more than what was written on the board. The lunch here is great, I love the soups and wonderful sandwiches. However, the woman who often works the main register is less than stellar. I know many who have stopped going because of their interactions with her and the owner. My friends and I also find it extremely frustrating that there's a $10 minimum for cards, granted cash is a rarity in 2018. I typically give everyone the consideration of a bad day, but this needs to be reported to those unfamiliar or questioning visiting The Village Cheese Shop. Been coming here year round for over a decade. I'm not a tourist, but an actual local who lives part time in SH. Although service was never great (peak and off peak), it has always been convenient as I have a home close by, and sandwiches were decent (minus the overpriced cheese that never seems to be fresh). Called ahead the other day to order a breakfast sandwich. Informed the man on the phone (owner) that I would be picking up in 20 minutes, as I was strapped on time. Showed up to shop and was told sandwich wasn't made because they ran out of the sandwich bread I requested. I was a baffled as typically that is something that is told to a customer when they place an order. So I questioned why I wasn't told that on the phone or simply why didn't they call me to let me know. The owner responded "we don't have to tell you" and followed up with a hostile tone "if you don't like it get the fuck out". I proceeded to let him know that I had been coming to his establishment for over a decade and had spent a significant amount on catering for events. His response "so what, you spent money - get the fuck out of my store". At this point, I had enough of verbal abuse by an irate man. I proceeded to walk out, at which time I could see his wife holding him back. We all have bad days, but at NO time is foul language and irate behavior acceptable, especially when I have supported your business for over a decade. Considering the serval reviews on this site, the Village Cheese Shop fails in the heart of owning a business - customer service (to locals and visitors). Go to Golden Pear (one minute away) - They may be a few cents more, but at least you don't leave feeling abused. read more
