I typically give everyone the consideration of a bad day, but this needs to be reported to those unfamiliar or questioning visiting The Village Cheese Shop. Been coming here year round for over a decade. I'm not a tourist, but an actual local who lives part time in SH. Although service was never great (peak and off peak), it has always been convenient as I have a home close by, and sandwiches were decent (minus the overpriced cheese that never seems to be fresh). Called ahead the other day to order a breakfast sandwich. Informed the man on the phone (owner) that I would be picking up in 20 minutes, as I was strapped on time. Showed up to shop and was told sandwich wasn't made because they ran out of the sandwich bread I requested. I was a baffled as typically that is something that is told to a customer when they place an order. So I questioned why I wasn't told that on the phone or simply why didn't they call me to let me know. The owner responded "we don't have to tell you" and followed up with a hostile tone "if you don't like it get the fuck out". I proceeded to let him know that I had been coming to his establishment for over a decade and had spent a significant amount on catering for events. His response "so what, you spent money - get the fuck out of my store". At this point, I had enough of verbal abuse by an irate man. I proceeded to walk out, at which time I could see his wife holding him back. We all have bad days, but at NO time is foul language and irate behavior acceptable, especially when I have supported your business for over a decade. Considering the serval reviews on this site, the Village Cheese Shop fails in the heart of owning a business - customer service (to locals and visitors). Go to Golden Pear (one minute away) - They may be a few cents more, but at least you don't leave feeling abused. read more

I live and work locally. This is the worst place I have ever encountered in the village. The service is horrible, the owners often shout at the employees like they are lower class citizens. The prices are outrageous. For a sandwich with 5, yes I counted, 5 slices of deli turkey, 3 slices of swiss cheese, honey mustard and a bottle of water I was charged $12.71. ARE YOU KIDDING ME? As for their soups, a medium turkey chili, that is not homemade clearly, and a bottle of water cost me $9.50. That is absurd, especially when you can go to citarella and get that for half the price and six times the quality. I gave this place one more chance when I went there for a salad. THE WORST SALAD I HAVE EVER TASTED. I will never again step foot in this disgusting place. Get real Village Cheese Shop, this may be Southampton Village but you are a joke. read more

Great place that I discovered 3 years ago when I changed companies in the Village of Southampton. Great soups, cheese selection and specialty sandwiches. Horrible customer service , no greeting . About 6 employees at each counter working completely ignoring customers at the counter waited 15 mins just to see if someone would ask for an order they did not , walked to the front to ask if I should place my order at the register or deli they said the deli. I mentioned no one was asking for my order and she just stared at me without offering to take my order. I then just let my husband stand in line because by this time I had a headache ... The wraps are good, I've had two different types so far and they were delicious, made to order. Also tried the "London" sandwich, but with pesto instead of bbq sauce, was tasty as well. I tried the chicken noodle soup, it wasn't anything special and isn't home made (thumbs down). After standing at the salad/smoothie/juice counter for a few minutes without anyone acknowledging me, I asked, "is this where I order a smoothie?", to which an employee replied, "yes." And then didn't ask me what I wanted or give me any suggestions on how to place the order. So I didn't get one, and probably never will. read more

I went 2 Village Cheese shop to get cheese hence the name. They should change their name to go to Citarella if you want cheese was not happy with their selection of cheese. We ordered 4 sandwiches and 2 sides. What a waste of money. I have never seen tomatoes sliced so thin. The chicken was sliced thin also and was just about nonexistent on the wrap. There was plenty of the green baby spinach though. The mozzarella was a decent piece which is why I gave 2 stars instead of one. We walked in on a Tuesday at 11:55am and were still waiting at the counter for our sandwiches at 12:30pm. Nothing fancy just turkey and tuna. When we finally got the sandwiches, they were just so-so. Certainly not worth the 35 minute wait. My suggestion to the deli staff is for a single person to handle a full order like all efficient deli counters do. Partial orders sat idle on the counter while chaos ensued. The staff here is remarkably unfriendly and have no sense of customer service. Management is equally deplorable. Most people I know that have been there, that live locally, can't understand why they are still in business. They are also duplicitous about the food that they sell. I'm surprised that the local snobbery has any kinds of tolerance for this place. It has a a little bit of everything but has mastered none. Bagels are stale, nobody knows anything about cheese, served with a woman who had the phone pressed up against her face. I found it odd to hear a manager speak bad/broken Spanish to an employee. It sounded almost condescending. They are seriously saving money on good labor in this place. Food and drink selection is odd. Cheese I'm familiar with seemed like it had melted or something. We enjoyed our breakfast at the Cheese shop over the Golden Pear. No crazy crowds, self serve iced coffee, and plenty of seating. Granted, the setting isn't as charming as the Golden Pear it was still just as delicious and without the headache! It would be perfect for a takeout lunch to bring to the beach. read more

Shocking customer service - the bread for the sandwiches did not taste very fresh, and don't even get me started on their coffee

So I was shocked at the end of the summer by the complete lack of respect and cleanliness of this usually fine establishment. The owner who is usually there was always accommodating. But since now all the "rich people" are gone, the red-headed Woman is abusive, nasty, and took away all my food when she demanded that I pay in cash on their $10 min on debit/cc cards. The line in front had to wait 15 mins for her to show up. And their was a a terrible garbage smell coming from the kitchen. Mind you, my family helps support this establishment during the summer, and now, while my dad is in the hospital, they treat their own customers as garbage. (I wasn't the only one online treated like cattle). I refuse to allow my family to support such a nasty attitude. Hey, if that means I have to pay more to go back to golden pear, so be it. I mean, I'll pay the $30 for the blt at silvers ... because they know how to treat their customers. Great coffee, quick service (usually) and not too exorbitantly priced considering it's right smack on Main Street in Southampton Village. This is my experience from over a summer ago but I still can't get over it. I went in on my lunch break and got stuffed grape leaves in a deli container. After getting back to my job I noticed they had mold on them, not wanting to make a scene in front of the other patrons and just wanting something else to eat I kindly called in advanced to let them know why I was coming back. When I got to the counter the woman didn't even look at them and told me they were "fine". I pointed at the mold and mentioned the date on the sell by the sticker that was 6 days old. Again she said they were good. I was shocked she wouldn't even look down at them. Then she said rudely "they come from a can, you want me to open another can for you". I've worked in the food industry for 6 years and just couldn't believe it. She made me feel like I was doing something wrong, a line started to form. I'm very non-confrontational and started to get embarrassed. Finally I just said "I'm not trying to cause a problem, can I just get my money back?" What's sad is there are so many negative reviews about the service and the owner simply does not care!!! I always support local businesses in the Hamptons; however, this is one I will no longer be supporting. The owner is a RUDE and UNETHICAL woman who literally SCREAMED at me when I told her I was unhappy with my sandwich! Incredible poor wait staff. You wait on three different lines to Oder your cheese. They took half the order and waited on the next in line. I protested that they complete my order and they asked me to wait in another line to get served. After being shuffled and ignored, I just walked out. I loved the shop under its previous ownership. They stocked wonderful cheeses and could make recommendations from their extensive expertise. The new owners know nothing about cheese or customer service for that matter. I sent my husband in yesterday to pick up cheeses, truffled salami, olives and crackers for Thanksgiving. The ladies working there didn't seem particularly interested in helping customers, but when he finally got one to pay attention to him, she was not at all helpful with regard to selecting cheeses. She also informed him that they were all out of the truffled salami and had no pitted olives available. This morning when I unwrapped the cheeses she had given him, they were hard, stale and moldy. She'd done such a sloppy job of wrapping them that they were a complete mess. I gather that they're still making good sandwiches there, but they might as well drop the word cheese from their name because what they've got stocked is nothing any serious hostess would ever want to serve a guest. This is heartbreaking for me because it used to be my go to place for entertaining. I will get my cheese from Citarella from now on and skip the cheese shoppe. read more

Stopped in on a whim with my boyfriend. The woman behind the counter offered to help us and gave us a sample of cheese. We decided to order a cheese platter and was told to have a seat. About 10 minutes later, she called us up to pay and started packing up our platter. When asked why we couldn't dine there, she said they were closed but could eat around the corner on some park benches outside. It was 43 degrees out! She thought we knew the place was closing, but we had no idea. Since we got there prior to close they should have accommodated us, or let us know we could take our purchase to go but couldn't dine in. We will never go back! read more

We went there the week of labor day. We ordered four egg sandwiches, bacon for the kids and some drinks. The sandwiches were dried out and sub-par. The bacon tasted awful and looked like shoe leather. I approached the manager with a request for a muffin in lieu of the bacon because the kids didn't like it and his unprofessional response was that he had to charge me for the muffin because they make the bacon every day and don't receive complaints. Why do they not allow you to leave a negative amount of stars? Went here tonight at 4:30. They say they're open til 5. They were sweeping and cleaning. Asked if it was okay to order still and was told yes by an employee. After the sandwiches were done I wanted to eat them there and was told by the owners that we could not. It was only 4:40. There was 20 minutes until they were closed. It was originally the female owner who was being so rude. To us and her employees!! She said we could eat somewhere outside. I decided I wasn't going to even buy the food anymore. They were just that rude. They should have told me upon entering that we would not be able to eat there! When I went to leave the man shouted "fck you"at me!!Twice!! I have been a regular customer there for a while. They know who we are. And he cursed at me in front of my child with autism. This place was recommended to me by a friend and oh man, do I wish I hadn't listened. I waited 45 minutes at a very not busy part of the day watching four women make 1 sandwich at a time for 3 people in front of me. The entire line, now 10 people long behind me, became vocally upset. This didn't phase the workers, who continued to slowly make sandwiches and ultimately make my simple order impressively wrong. I saw one worker notice my impatience, and honest to god thought I saw her spit in my open sandwich before putting it on the grill. While eating, I remembered this and decided to look at my sandwich, to find what was either a stray piece of soggy quacamole (which was not in my order) or her loogi. I proceeded to nearly vomit for the remainder of our drive home. Had we eaten eaten on site, surely I would have reported what happened, but I've instead decided to never return to that shop or this town ever again. The foreign (not the Spanish, the russian) staff is awfully rude with nasty attitudes. It is clear they do not like their job. The pale woman with the short reddish hair sneezed three times into her glove and proceeded to help the next customer, serving them cheese with the same gloves on. YIKES. I saw flies in the salad bar as well another time. The soup used to be my favorite, but they changed it to a commercial brand.
