I know I'm in for a treat whenever I get to go to Cheesecake Etc. The restaurant has a lounge feel to it and is romantic and cozy, with many tables for 2 - a perfect place to take a date. The restaurant has been here for as long as I can remember. It has slowly expanded over the years and has taken over the units on either side of it. They only serve 2 types of cheesecakes here - Original and Chocolate. Be forewarned, their cheesecakes have no crust, which isn't a big deal to me, especially when the cake on its own is so delicious. I would recommend ordering the Original with strawberry sauce. It is nice and light, yet decadent, with a good amount of fresh strawberries. I am drooling as I am writing this. The servers here are friendly, but not the most attentive. If you get seated in the corner (which could be nice if you are on a romantic date), be prepared to have to get up to wave someone down. Working just up the street from Cheesecake Etc, I've gotten to know the owners over the years. They're very generous and quick to donate gift certificates for various fundraisers we've had. Everytime I walk by I think "jeez, they really need to change that sign" since it seems so dark and dated and above all, easy to miss. What I keep forgetting is that they don't need any flashy signage or convenient hours. They get a packed house almost every night without even trying. An old fashioned mom and pop shop to the very core, Cheesecake Etc exudes the nostalgic, homey feel of traditional, simple, old-fashioned cheesecake. Yes, they only have two types of cheesecake, a few teas and coffees, and yummy french bread, but I also know for a fact that they bake 35 cheesecakes daily by hand. Not bad for octogenarians, am I right? Moreover, the cheesecakes are light, not overly sweet and delicious, the bread is crusty and warm, and the coffees/teas/cider are piping hot. Came here with a friend for late night dessert and there weren't too many customers filling up the spacious interior of the store, which can be good or bad depending on how noisy you like the place to be. The service we had was fine, nothing special but nothing horrendous either. Since we were at Cheesecake Etc, we ordered 2 cheesecake slices to see if they would live up to our expectations. There was nothing wrong with the taste of the cheesecake, but it just wasn't what my friend and I expected or the type of cheesecake we liked. The cake was more cream than cheese (hence the various "light and fluffy" reviews on here). I liked their original cheesecake over their chocolate one, but still there was nothing that really "wowed" me. Sure, the taste of the cheesecake was different, but not necessarily in a good way. I prefer denser cheesecakes with more "cheese" to it. Personal preference I suppose? This place seems a little old and has a lot of history, with dim lighting that adds to the mood. There are two types of cheesecakes...The thick kind and the whipped kind. How anyone likes the whipped kind after trying the thick version is beyond me by a mile. Well, the cheese cake at Cheesecake Etc is the whipped style and I couldn't decipher the difference in texture between the cheese cake and the scoop of whipped cream. Flavour was fine as I tried the chocolate, but seriously, there was no content. I want to indulge in chewing this golden treat whereas their version, I could've almost drank it. Reasonably tasty cheesecakes, non-extortionate prices, they try hard on atmosphere (love the live music), but -- both times I've been -- easily the worst dining service experiences of my life. Waitstaff were impossible to flag down and were juggling the orders all wrong; plates were being sent to the wrong tables. I don't know, should it take half an hour to bring a slice of cheesecake out? Probably not, right? Plus, tons of big giggling groups of students on a night out. Ultimately just not that special. It's a unique concept, but if you had up to Broadway and grab the matcha creme brulee at Suika you won't be disappointed (and you'll find a better drink selection). read more

There are more than enough positive reviews about Cheesecake Etc. for me to write anything original so to avoid being redundant, I'll just summarize why you should come here. It's a great place for late night dessert (i.e. cheesecake etc..) though you might face a line-up on the weekends. It's great for dates and great for conversing. Occasionally there'd be a live piano player and the staff are all polite. Parking is available along the street and side streets but given the hour, you may have to feed the meter. I should also mention that since their renovations, Cheesecake Etc. is even more spacious and accommodating. Oh, and you should definitely try their cheesecakes. Take my word for it. read more

It's soooo light an fluffy you can't even tell you're eating a cheesecake (in the dense sense where it feels like you overindulged). I mean, all they do is cheesecake, so it better be good. And it is! But don't expect anything fancy like the Cheesecake Factory in the States. It's basic. White chocolate cheesecake (or plain?) and Chocolate Cheesecake. I've been wanting to try this place for a long while now as the hordes milling about outside in the evenings made me curious. So, while my brother was in town, we decided to check it out. Yawn. Two flavours. TWO flavours? What's that all about? Two toppings from which to choose - strawberries or chocolate sauce. Oh, how is a girl to choose? What a surprise this place was. Hidden away on Granville and 6th. The space inside is HUGE. And a place called Cheesecake Etc? Score! ... then reality hits. It's super busy. Like filled with Asians (of which I am one) and the crustless, soft cheesecake (the antithesis of the classic New York cheesecake) is very Asia - but I could care less for it. It's meh cheesecake, and the portion is on the smaller side. They have original cheesecake and chocolate cheesecake and offer variety by offering several different toppings - including blueberry and strawberry. The cheesecake is nothing special. I got a peppermint tea with enough hot water for one mug full. I wanted more hot water, but the place is understaffed and underserviced. I feel like almost mean for giving it 3 stars but it has to be done. And the reason is everything except quality. What I absolutely love about this place is the cheesecake. I'm one of those people who are getting old and don't know why kids like so much sugar nowadays. I, of course, say this while I completely ignore the fact that I used to eat orange concentrate straight out of the can when I was a kid. And this place does it perfectly. I got the chocolate cheesecake with strawberries and whip cream. What brought a little happy tear to the corner of my eye was the fact that none of the above, and no combination of the above was too sickly sweet. There didn't appear to be any sugar in the whip cream, and not much at all in the strawberries. Even the cheesecake wasn't heavy or too sweat. Which is a bit of bad news because you can wolf it down really easily. But I did love it. It was reeeaaallllyyyy good. My main beef for not giving it more stars is the selections. It's nil. As mentioned before you pretty much have like 2 options, its good, but you have 2 options. And for those of you who LOVE the graham cracker crumb on the bottom, don't bother looking, it ain't there. Also, it might be weird of me but I didn't like the atmosphere. Maybe it was being so close to the bridge, maybe because I went at an off time of day. The place just didn't feel that inviting. We ate. We paid. We left. It felt a little scandalous, illegal even. Not even a cuddling after... But in the end, they do what they do very well, which is basic cheesecake. So take your mom there. Thy cheesecake be creamy. A little too creamy... Never mind, that's not possible. Cheesecake here is delicious, guys, but I'd recommend taking it to go. The dim ambiance attempts romance, but the space is too large and seating chart generic to deliver. The piano helps, but really, you just feel like you're sitting in a dark restaurant with people all around you. Also, the service here is consistently terrible. Case in point: I was here with two girlfriends on a Friday night. We were seated against the wall in their expanded space (to the left of the door), next to an incredibly lovey couple. Which is fine and lovely and we aren't bitter old crones or anything, but I sure felt awkward about their gently caressing each other's hands and faces just a stone's flick away. Service wise, our server spilled water on the booth seat next to my friend. No problem, just an accident, no one got wet. But she never came back to clean up the spill until we flagged her back down. This wasn't a small splash either, the water was dripping onto the floor (and none of us were about to sacrifice our one, thin napkin)... I know it sounds like this place doesn't deserve a 3, even, but seriously, the cheesecake is delicious. Take it home. Put on some music. Light a candle. Venue is old and slightly dingy, yes some antique-y decors exist here and there, the carpet looks old dirty and worn. There's not much of choices of food except for Cheesecake with a choice of about 6 different toppings with or without whipped cream. They do have a Chocolate cheesecake, also one cake offering. They use non baked cheesecake, yes it tastes fresh, very fluffy and just the right sweetness topped with a high quality sauce of your choice. Each sauce has its own price, plain slice $5, so average would come to about $7. This is a very fluffy slice so don't expect something "heavy" and be "full" after one slice. By "full" I mean comparing a slice here and other typical venues where you'd actually feel the dessert was rich- which is what I'm accustomed and expect cheesecake to be. Better put, the same sized slice at a typical venue would be twice in weight! Though the food was well prepared $9 taxed/tipped for a non-rich slice of cheesecake plus run down decor really isn't attractive enough to have me coming back. Don't get me wrong, being born in Vancouver I've probably been here half a dozen times and I won't avoid it if friends would like to come but I wouldn't suggest this place to go for dessert. A very good "at home" competitor is Costco's cheesecake bundle! and for a fraction of the price per slice (comes with four flavors). read more

Cheesecake is decent, even though I prefer it New York style/even cheesier. Atmosphere is nice (cozy, dim, live music etc), and the service is okay. Been coming here for a few years now, but decided to try the trifle for the first time recently...and I actually kind of enjoyed it! My only gripe with the trifles were that they didn't seem very consistent. Everyone at my table ordered it and some people had more sponge cake (moi) and no strawberry, while others more strawberries and only a little sponge cake. Some had almost none of both, and just mousse. So Cheesecake Etc., please even out the mousse to strawberry to sponge cake ratio! I think this can be much better! read more

Having been to NYC and trying out a number of awesome cheese cake mom and pops shops this place won't compare...however lets dig into the details. The ambience is interesting, dark with red decor reminding you of Paris cabarets in the 60s; not that I have been myself but what I have seen in the movies. We arrived as a group and got a seat close to the piano which I'm sure is being played at some point however it was quiet in a cold December night. We decided to try three cheesecakes and share it: Strawberry, Chocolate and Lemon Crumbs. Even though I'm a chocolate fan, the Lemon Crumbs which was their featured cheese cake did more for me than the other two choices. This is a night spot for the neighbours in the area which is primarily asian but I wouldn't mind going for another taste again...that being said I wasn't blown away! read more

Last food stop before leaving Vancouver was getting cheesecake which typically I just tolerate, however the cheesecake here was perfect. We arrived around 9PM on a Sunday and the place was bustling with people and music (live piano). Beyond cheesecakes the menu includes drinks and one or two other deserts, but the emphasis is primarily on the cheesecake. I ended up splitting the chocolate(!) cheesecake with my brother. The cheesecake also comes with real cream which was given to me on the side in a large glass as I was the only one eating it. Meh.... I don't disagree that Cheesecake Etc. has a very different approach to their cheesecake. It is a lot lighter and fluffy and not dense like most. Although different, I am not sure what the big deal is. They only have chocolate and vanilla and then they pour syrup over it to make it taste different. Besides the texture of the cheesecake, there really isn't anything unique to it. I also had one of their Shanghai Fogs. The drink make the cheesecake better. Cuts down on the sweetness and how rich it is. Though the cheesecake lacked, the ambiance does not. This place looks a lot smaller than it actually is from the outside, but there are plenty of seating. We missed the live jazz by an hour, so that was a bummer..but this place opens til quite late, so that was a plus when you are craving something sweet and all the bakeries are closed. Another downside is that it is CASH ONLY! As I have mentioned before, a place that is cash only just gets points off in my book for the inconvenience. So beware to have enough cash! I will most likely return if I am really craving something during the late night and I can't find any other desserts.... read more

On the quest for a great local cheesecake experience and after reading the good comments posted here, I went out and got two portions back to my hotel. The interior looked nice to me so one star from that. The cream is real deal, although there must be some additives or so much air in it as it's not as rich foam as I expected a whipped cream to be. The strawberries are fresh and not too sweet. Another star from the cream and strawberries. But the cake itself. First of all: it was frozen in the middle. Now, if it was stored in too cool after baking it, I'd expect it to be frozen on the surface. But this was not the case. Also there were the kind of frozen flakes you get after freezing this kind of a cake. And I actually feel sorry for the guys working over there as the staff seemed nice and polite. Getting a frozen cake actually never even came to my mind and it really wasn't something I was expecting. This is actually really sad, because I think the taste of the cake was OK. But now it wasn't freshly baked and it was so cold it was hard to pick any special taste from the cake. What happened to this place?! Just a year ago this place was a magnificent girls date/romantic spot. Cakes creamy and light, melting the moment I take a bite, servers so nice and friendly, cozy ambience, prices a bit high but worth the romantic atmosphere, etc. Now I bring my boyfriend and the servers are ignorant (there were only about five other parties), chilly interior, the bill thrown at us 5 minutes after our cakes come out, and the price--wow, sure went up but the quality (and quantity) came down: over $15 for 2 pieces?! (and the pieces became smaller.. But the amount of whipped cream doubled--uh, lol?) And worst of all--the cake!!! Crumbly and "bready!" I can make a similar cake at home... Our group of 4 had hot coffee & cheesecakes all around. Two of us got the plain, & two of us got it topped with strawberries. I was on a ahem, diet, so I planned to give half away to my boyfriend, but I actually ended up eating all of mine and then half of his. Oops. The cheesecakes here are different than the dense style I am used to. It is lighter and not sickeningly sweet. They are so fluffy and delicate that they melt in your mouth and aren't heavy, so before you know it you've eaten the whole thing. And another half. YUM! read more

This is my favourite dessert place. I love their cheesecake, their atmosphere and I have plenty memories coming here since early 2000. If you are lucky, you might come on a night when the owner will play his piano! The place will be busy during weekends or holidays, so be prepared to have a bit of lineup. That said, it's always worth it for me. Try their take out full cake if you want to enjoy in your own home or for birthday! Fun fact: in early 2000's, the dessert restaurant was actually separated into two: Cheesecake Etc. on the left and Tigers Cheesecake on the right, with their kitchen linked together. It was only a few years ago when they finally broke the wall and created a door way to link the two together. Tiger used to be more spacious and can accommodate larger groups. I've been going to Cheesecake etc since 1998 and it's still my favourite cheesecake hands down, the cheesecake I compare all other cheesecakes to. It's a lighter cheesecake, with no crust. The options are plain, chocolate, and they usually have a special. And the toppings are strawberries or chocolate sauce, oh and whipped cream. I usually have plain with strawberries and whipped cream but I've had the chocolate as well and it is delicious. If you're looking for a cheesecake factory type place w loads of different cheesecakes then this may not be the place for you. Cheesecake etc, is just simple cheesecake done really well. No candy flavours or factory made frozen cheesecakes thawed out when ordered. The light, fluffy texture suggests a pretty freshly made cheesecake. They also have a selection of coffees and teas, and a piano bar so it's a great late night hang out. Things to note, they don't open until later in the evening, and they only take cash. I've been out of Vancouver for awhile but when I was last there in Sept 2010 it looked like they had expanded which is great because we didn't have to wait to be seated. read more

I got intro'd to this place several years ago, and it has yet to fail me. I try to go every time I "go home". First visit = cheesecake w/ crust? wtf is that?! really?! Second visit = omg it's still SO GOOD Third visit = damn, where is this place?! Yes, it IS THAT GOOD, it's consistent, and if you went over the bridge, you went too far. I think on the 2nd visit, we had some newbies with us and they noted that they'd take someone on a date there. I could see that as it is rather dark inside and rustic-romantic in a way. I concur with the notion that this isn't Cheesecake Factory, but that's a good thing. A cheesecake that is good enough to have no crust is pretty damn good cheesecake. It's not too sweet or heavy, yet your mouth will be in heaven. Oh yeah, it's a small place, but we've managed to have a group of 8 (incl a toddler) on the weekend once. This was such an extreme, extreme disappointment. While visiting Vancouver with my boyfriend, I was so excited to find this late-night cheesecake place. I LOVE desserts, and this spot was a quick 10-minute bus ride from our room. Being open so late, and conveniently-located, was such an exciting combination. We stopped in for a slice of chocolate cheesecake (to go) on our way back to our room after a long day. (Be aware: they only take debit or cash.) The positves of this place stop there; unfortunately, I cannot call this cheesecake- or even anything that tastes of chocolate. There is no crust. The texture is more an overly-aerated slimey mousse than anything resembling cheesecake. That all would be alright, but the taste was AWFUL. The attempt at chocolate flavor was muddied and had a smokey and meaty under flavor (not at all pleasant and was kind of sickening). There was a fake cream-cheese flavoring paired with that, which just left my taste-buds confused and longing for actual chocolate cheesecake. I NEVVVER-EVVVER leave a chocolate dessert un-finished, but this went directly in the TRASH. SO.SO.GROSS. Also, heinously over-priced. So upsetting. read more
