A great spot in OKC. I came at an odd time in between lunch and dinner. I would call this stripped-down fine dining. The quality of service and food are on par with any steakhouse, but the atmosphere and entrees lack the pretension of most fine dining restaurants. We had Sunday Brunch at Cheevers Cafe with friends before the matinee of Sponge Bob Squqre Pants at St. Lukes Poteat Theater. Cheevers has been one of our favorite OKC dining venues for over twenty years. Previously a floral shop, it's a cool venue with lots of charm. The restaurant is broken up into separate areas, and it can be a bit tight. Some of the four tops are too small for four, a bud vase, a bread basket, bread plates, four water glasses, four drink glasses, salt and pepper, and silverware. It can become quite a challenge. The menu is fun with a mix of traditional and somewhat eclectic items. The food quality is excellent. I had roasted chicken enchiladas. They were tasty with the salsa verde and garlic creama. It was served with cilantro rice, which was unspectacular. Based on the rice, I would rate it a 4/5. Jan had the cowboy benedict, a chicken fry, roasted potatoes with an egg on top of the chicken fry. It was excellent. She gave it a 5/5. Came here on a stop through OKC. Wife and I dined we split the chicken fried steak that was the popular dish. It was a good thing we split it was massive. I don't want to get too into the details but, a staff member shared a common interest of mine and it's just always a pleasure to find common ground; especially in the least expected of locales. Drinks were awesome; it's been a while since I've been in but, I honestly don't think the drinks have ever missed. My highlight of this section were the non-alcoholic options. SO DAMN GOOD. Onto food, we grabbed a queso of some sort for an app, and I've gotta say I was really disappointed in this portion of the meal. The cheese was just one massive chunk that had to be manually torn (chips were way too flimsy for the task). Entrees were great. Maybe a little on the smaller side for the price but, it was lunch so I'm not expecting to be stuffed at the end of it. Classic OKC restaurant. Upscale but comfortable ambience with excellent service. I have been several times and always a wonderful dining experience. The menu is certainly not extensive, but the dishes are excellent, especially the chicken fried steak...they take a basic Southern classic and make it something special! I was by myself so I sat at the bar. Very nice decor. The bartender and waiter serving the bar patrons food were both fast, friendly, and helpful. The Cocktail menu offers a few signature cocktails. The wine List is extensive. I had the chicken fried steak. The portions of the main courses are large. One would not need an appetizer. The food was excellent. The cocktail I ordered was beautiful and tasted great. The parking isn't great, although I was able to find a spot. They do require reservations, at least on Friday night. My husband and I were traveling Route 66 and decided to stop in after seeing it in a travel article. I was expecting a more retro- looking kind of place, especially since it was located in the Route 66 district. However, once inside, we were pleasantly surprised! It was a very classy "joint". I visited here since I was also working on 23rd Street, about 10 minutes east of this location. They also happened to show up on Yelp as one of the best restaurants in the area. I looked further and saw they had a chicken fried steak among other several classy menu items. In my experience, when an upscale restaurant has a CFS, it's usually damn good. When I ordered it, the bartender (because i sat at the bar) said people come from all over to order the dish. Their menu is not that large and consists of many beef dishes, so sorry for vegetarians. They would have to order a small plate, a soup or a salad, pretty much. They also have 2 daily specials that were not on the menu during my visit. A chicken and a fish dish. Also, their dessert are homemade, and 2 were normal size, 2 were large enough to be shared. When I arrived, the dining room wasn't that full... but my only seating option was the bar. Either they're out of reservations, or they just don't seat single customers at tables. Turns out by the time I was leaving, they did seat a single at a table near where I was at the bar, doubt he had a reservation. The cfs was delicious, and I could tell the meat was good quality. There was a lot of breading I ended up pulling off, but still a substantial amount of food for the price. You get 2 approx. 6 oz steaks that are fried in really tasty batter that isn't too salty. The ends were well cooked and not burnt like some places that pound the meat too thin or cook at too high of a temperature. The steaks are resting on top of homemade mashed potatoes, which have some pieces of skin. These were delicious, too. The cocktails looked delicious and were made by a friendly bartender who knows his stuff. My only regret was not ordering one. I have been coming here for years. I have NEVER had a bad experience. I even get my adult kids $100 gift cards for stocking stuffers. This time my son and I were spending some quality time together. Something that we don't get much of because of his busy schedule. So we chose what we knew would be a great experience. To start things off this place makes the best old fashion in town. We make ours with high west whiskey. We started by splitting a crab cake. Good thing we only got one. It was huge and filled with crab and no fillers. We then finished with a medium rare filet that was cooked to perfection. It came with two sides. I had the garlic mashed potatoes and sautéed green beans. My son had the mashed potatoes and broccolini. The mashed potatoes were stellar, the green beans were good and my son loved his broccolini. We had to skip dessert tonight. Too full! Don't forget to ask for some rolls. They are delicious! The only bad thing about this place is the parking. Their parking lot is tiny and the parking areas around them are restricted parking for other businesses. So as much as I love this place I recommend that you bring a small car if you park in their lot or bring your walking shoes for other parking. Overall grade "A+" except the parking. I am soo pleasantly surprised by how much I enjoyed Cheever's brunch today. I had made a reservation for two, and my friend was running late, but I wasn't given one ounce of flack-- just got seated, our waters filled, and me a brunch punch to sip on while I waited. We were seated in the dining room by the bar which had a great ambiance with the darker colors and bright sunlight coming through the windows. Our server was so friendly and perfectly attentive enough. We didn't feel rushed at all which was appreciated with how much we ordered!! I have been wanting to visit for a long time, but the menu had never screamed at me, so it was so exciting for everything we ordered to be so good. The brunch punch today was a hibiscus tea with champagne, and I cannot stop thinking about it. I want to try the All-Nighter next time. Coffee wasn't on the menu, so I was hesitant to ask for it, but of course they had it! The bread and butter was fantastic, and they would have brought us a third basket if we didn't stop them. We split a cinnamon roll, and it was perfect wow wow. Honestly, we could have stopped there and been satisfied. My friend got the shrimp and grits, and I got the chicken fried steak, and we were both pleased. The portions felt only adequate for the price, but everything was good quality, and it was a brunch splurge day, so what's the difference of a few dollars. I had such a nice time. As a young new grad in OKC, it's hard to feel comfortable going to nicer places like this, but I can't wait to go back! I need to try lunch or dinner but also get back for brunch again whenever I can. Thank you! FYI: there is parking in the back, but it seems to get full easily, and it's cramped. Cheever's is an OKC classic. If you're hosting friends or family from out of town, it's the place to go. From appetizers to entrees to desserts, everybody will find something to love. Cheever's leans toward comfort food with a southwestern twist. For me, it starts and stops with the chicken fried steak. Well, if you order CFS for dinner you actually get two. Both the breading and steak are seasoned well, and there's a good meat to breading ratio. The star is the jalapeño cream gravy. As good as the CFS is, I swear there are times I order this because I've craving the gravy. The molasses chicken is also a go-to. I love their bacon-wrapped shrimp with cheddar-green onion grits. You can close your eyes, point to the menu and be confident you're going to enjoy what you get. It's a fun atmosphere and the staff is as great as the food. It feels like home. Wonderful service, amazing wine and bread. Our main plates were so tasty and filling. Our waitress recommended the dessert (roasted pecan ice cream ball) and it was insane. She said the typical size is a POUND of ice cream. We opted for the smallest portion for 2 of us. This was our first time here and we made a reservation before going to the OKC Thunder game. We were wearing our Thunder gear, and didn't feel out of place. But there were others more dressed up than us, so still a perfect place for date night! Personally I don't get the attraction of this place food wise. I think it's a local favorite because old memories are here because I didn't think the food was anything memorable. The queso is quite thick and broke the chip when we dipped. I think the atmosphere and location are nice but I'd just get a drink next time and skip the food. Crisp tortillas were filled with meaty tender quail, gooey Mexican cheeses, creamy ancho chile sauce and topped with salsa verde and juicy diced tomatoes. For my entrée I went with the dish the restaurant is known for: Cheever's Chicken Fried Steak.
