    Mango shrimp w/coconut rice
    Trang D.

Burmese food is so hard to find around here, and Chef Burma completely exceeded my expectations. I will definitely be back with more friends so we can try the rest of the menu. First of all, the cocktails are deliciously satisfying. It's not easy to find a restaurant with amazing cocktails and food. Tea Leaf Salad: This is now my favorite salad of all time. I never thought I would say that about a salad with no meat, but the flavors and textures are incredible. I honestly need to learn how to make this myself at home. The garlic chips really seals the deal here. Chicken Curry Dip: The pastry was so buttery and flaky. The curry was deeply flavorful, and the chicken thigh inside was wonderfully tender. Mango Shrimp with Coconut Rice: Oh my goodness, the rice was so fragrant. The shrimp was packed with flavor without being overly sweet. Tip: Make sure to ask for the hot sauce if you like spice. It is actually spicy, which is a rare compliment coming from me!

Tea leaf salad and service were amazing! First time having Burmese food, and it was pretty good. Our waitress was so helpful from the get go. Wish I got her name, but she was amazing, provided so many solid recommendations and was attentive. We said we loved spice and she brought out this killer sauce, which had a great kick. Tea leaf salad was amazing. Loved all the texture and crunch throughout the salad, and the dressing was light and bright. We got one lamb and one beef dish, one black pepper and the other basil chili. I'm not the biggest fan of stir-fry style dishes, due to the meat being more boiled texture but the flavors were great. Would definitely want to try a curry next time.

Food was great, as always. We were glad to get the special order, garlic okra, cooked in the style of garlic broccoli. (my favorite!) We also tried the salt and pepper calamari appetizer for the first time. The calamari tasted really fresh and delicious, but I thought the breading was too thick and destroyed some of the flavor. My kid's favorite is the Platha with chicken coconut curry. An excellent dish with coconut curry that actually tastes better than all of the curry dishes, in our opinion.

Of course, the iconic tea leaf salad is a must-order, especially if you've have never had it before. Overall, I think this is a nice diffusion of Indian and Chinese food, leaning more towards the Chinese side. They serve plenty of noodle and rice dishes, and are generally very flavorful. We ordered the dry lamb curry over rice and it was very good. The lamb was cooked perfectly. Our friends also ordered the mint chicken dish that looked and smelled amazing as well. I ordered their Burmese tea, which was very similar to a milk tea, but had slightly more tea flavor as well as sweetener. The staff here are very patient and the food came quickly. The ambience of the restaurant is generally pretty clean and modern.

Burma Superstar in the Bay Area has always been our gold standard for Burmese food, but this place just dethroned the undisputed heavyweight champ of NorCal. The adult beverage lineup is great, and you can't go wrong kicking things off with the tea leaf salad alongside the plantha and chicken curry dip. Don't sleep on the eggplant curry, either--even if you aren't typically an eggplant fan, the depth and complexity of the spices will completely win you over. For the mains, the chili beef dialed up to heat level 4 hits the absolute sweet spot, especially spooned over rich coconut rice to balance the fiery kick with a little sweetness. We wrapped things up with the sesame chicken paired with a side of their house Thai chili pepper sauce, which brought just the right amount of bright heat to cut through the richness. Outstanding from start to finish. Definitely a new favorite spot!

We started with an order of the samusa and the platha with coconut chicken curry dip. The curry dip was phenomenal - rich, flavorful, balanced, with a strong curry flavor beautifully canvassed in the platha. Possibly one of the best yellow curries I've had. The samusa were delightfully crunchy without being oily, and the filling was generously spiced, perfectly fluffy, could not have asked for better. For our entrees we tried the lemon and paprika chicken, the nan gyi thok with rice noodles, and the wok fried spicy noodles. The nan gyi thok was good but the curry sauce in the noodles did not have the same complexity of the curry dip so comparatively it just did not have the same depth of flavor. They also use the cilantro stems in the dish which have a stronger cilantro flavor and as someone who does not love cilantro, it took away from the overall flavors of the dish. The lemon and paprika chicken was good although the tomatoes added a slight wateriness that I was not a fan of. The star of the night was truly the wok fried spicy noodles. They were so truly delicious, not particularly spicy, and so good I forgot to photograph them. It's the dish I would recommend along with the coconut chicken curry that came with the platha. Overall a great experience. They have a nice drink menu, and both of the drinks that we got were delicious!

    Tanlines & Tea Leaves

Came in on a Thursday around 1pm. The restaurant is very nicely decorated. Our server was very attentive. We ordered the fiery garlic tofu (medium) with a side of jasmine rice, the tea leaf salad and the coconut curry with...Plathna (?). We also ordered the coconut monsoon and tanlines and tea leaves. Wow. Never had Burmese style food before. The fiery tofu was delicious. Even though it was ordered medium, it wasn't too spicy (got the hot oil on the side to spice it up!) The hint of the basil complemented the spicy sauce (tofu was different than your usual Asian tofu) and the green beans were perfectly cooked. The coconut curry with the "bread" was delicious too!! Not spicy and slightly sweet. The "bread" was crispy on the outside and a mochi consistency on the inside-delicious! Now the tea leaf salad. It was beautifully presented and our server mixed it at the table. The crispy garlic and other "crunchies" made this salad great. Overall a great tasting meal, fresh and tasty. Would like to try some of the other dishes on the menu.

This place earned the 5th Star because of our host Mikayla. Welcomed us with warmth and joyfully shared a little into to what to expect after asking if we had Burmese food in the past. Yes, today was our first. I'm a sucker for excellent customer service and Cafe Burma and Mikayla had me at HELLO. LOL NOTE: I DIDN'T DO ANY PRE- REVIEW UPON ARRIVING. The husband wanted a Monday Date night and who am I to say No. What we had: *Planta with Chicken Coconut Dip. This planta is a crossover of naan with Mochi like middle with the prefect crisp served with an amazing Chicken sauce. Yah...will be having this again. Hubby had most of it because I was saving my appetite for what's to come. *TeaLead Salad - Yes its a MUST. The fried seasoned garlic is the secret to why this salad hits the palate in the most perfect way. The dressing is oil based which wasn't over powering or even greasy. The peanut was tastefully done. Yes - I ate most of it. Fresh ingredients in every bite. *Chili Basil Beef - at first glance, it looked like Mongolian Beef but far from the taste. The cumin, ginger and chili flakes gave this dish the wow factor. Mind you, I dislike ginger pieces and didn't come across one piece so they must have used ginger powder which I appreciate. We all know the benefits of ginger and I feel like I got a dose of it without biting into one. *PadThai - we were warned that the Burmese way come with a hint of sweetness and this was definitely true but notoverpowering. Husband enjoyed it, me not so much. The dishes came with extra large prawns. You can tell the prawns we're seasoned first hand before getting tossed into the mix. DRINKS: Husband had the coconut monsoon (rum with coconut flakes and I had Bite Dog HAZY IPA - yum. Prime location - corner of 16th street and J, street parking. Restaurant was clean and with a bar and open kitchen concept. What I would have liked: I wish the aesthetic of the restaurant showcased the culture. Wish the dishes were served in a more traditional serving plates. My eyes eat first so I would have appreciated the extra touch but the TASTE definitely made up for it. Will definitely be back! Need to try a dessert next time. Thanks for having us Chef Burma.

Service and food were good. The flavors were on point and the chicken was tender and juicy. Lots of seating available. However, it's a bit overpriced for lunch. Otherwise, I would come back again.

Sticky rice with mango ice cream

Went here Saturday lunch with the whole family, nine people, and they handled it pretty well. We made a reservation on a short notice but they were able to accommodate. Staff had great energy the whole time, which helped because food kept trickling out over almost two hours The samusa was fine, nothing too special. The platha had a solid crunch with a soft inside, but the vegetable curry dip tasted more like lentil soup than anything else. All the appetizers came with a spicy, vinegary red sauce that tied everything together. The fried tofu was the best one though, crispy but crumbles when you bite it, and that sauce on the side made it even better. The tea leaf salad had a strong umami and sour flavor, heavy on the sesame like taste. The garlic noodles were bland on their own but worked as a base. For curries we got the lemongrass tofu, mango tofu, black pepper tofu, and burmese eggplant. The burmese eggplant was one of the best things we ordered, sweet and savory. Lemongrass tofu was the other one to get, balanced and not spicy. Mango ran sweeter, black pepper ran hotter. Skip the pineapple rice, it tasted like plain rice. The basmati biryani was great, it had flavor and held up under the curries. For dessert, we got the sticky rice with mango ice cream, warm rice, tasty ice cream, worked together well.

Chef Burma has been on my list to try for a long time. I'd only had Burmese food once before, and while I remember enjoying it, nothing really stuck with me. The restaurant itself is very nice inside and has a great atmosphere despite being just off the busy main street. Service was excellent from start to finish. We were seated quickly, got drinks right away, and the staff went above and beyond with recommendations. We definitely needed the help because the menu is huge and honestly a little overwhelming on a first visit. We ended up ordering the tea leaf salad, wok-stirred spicy noodles with shrimp, fiery tofu with vegetables, lemongrass chicken, and two orders of rice to share among four people, which ended up being the perfect amount. The tea leaf salad was unique and delicious. It's a Burmese staple with great textures and flavors ranging from crunchy and fresh to salty and savory. Really good. The fiery tofu was another standout. It was savory, umami-packed, and had a nice char. Their style of tofu is really unique and almost meaty in texture. The noodle dish was tasty, but surprisingly lacked any spice despite being called spicy noodles. Thankfully, our awesome waitress brought out a very spicy chili paste that reminded me a lot of sambal, which really kicked it up a notch. The shrimp was also very fresh and meaty, and you could tell it was good quality. The lemongrass chicken was good as well. The chicken was incredibly tender, likely velveted, with a nice savory flavor that felt balanced and not overpowering. One detail I really appreciated was how well all the vegetables were cooked across every dish. It's something that often gets overlooked, but nobody wants undercooked or mushy vegetables, and everything here was cooked perfectly. Overall, I was very impressed with both the service and food quality. The menu is so large that I'd absolutely come back to try more dishes. That said, while everything ranged from good to very good, I wasn't completely blown away by any particular flavor. I almost wonder if I just didn't order the dishes that best fit my palate. It's hard trying a new cuisine when you have no prior experiences to compare it too. Either way, it was a great meal, great service, and a great introduction to Burmese cuisine. I'm looking forward to learning more about the food and coming back to explore the menu some more.

What appears to be a roach nymph
    Jasmine C.

We went to Chef Burma because my friends and I wanted to try something new. We all ordered different dishes to share, including two lamb dishes, a shrimp dish, and coconut rice. One of the first things we noticed was the open kitchen layout right next to our seating area, where you can see the cooks. Almost immediately, some of my friends felt irritation from the strong cooking aromas, especially from frying onions. Overall, the food itself was different and enjoyable, and we liked being able to share everything family-style. However, toward the end of the meal, we found what appeared to be a cockroach nymph in one of the dishes. We were very upset and had a difficult time getting our server's attention, needing to ask another staff member to help after about 10 minutes. When our server came over, she seemed embarrassed and said she would speak to the manager. She returned and said the manager would be comping one of the dishes, which felt a bit unusual given that we weren't even sure which dish the issue came from. A little later, the manager came over and asked, "So what's the problem, ladies?" When I explained what we found, she quickly responded that they "don't have roaches" and asked to see a photo. While I understand wanting to clarify the situation, the interaction felt defensive rather than apologetic. Ultimately, our entire meal was comped, which we appreciated, but the overall handling of the situation left us feeling unsettled. For context, I've had a much different experience at another restaurant where I once found a small piece of a butter wrapper in my steak. In that case, the manager immediately came over, apologized, and comped the entire meal without hesitation. That contrast made this experience feel even more surprising.

I love a fun night out, and it's extra special when friends gather for our monthly dinner. The service was exceptional. A special thank you to Angela, the manager, and to Bella our amazing server. You made our dining experience perfect. We started out with drinks and appetizers. Fried tofu- a tasty dish, but out of all of our incredible nibbles, this one was my least favorite. I would've preferred for it to have more seasoning on the tofu itself, maybe even more sauce to share. Fried chicken wings- light, not greasy, lightly seasoned, and really tasty! Samusa- like a Samosa, but with lighter flavors. Curried potatoes, with a mixture of some green beans, carrots, with a vegetarian dipping sauce. Absolutely delicious! We dined on and shared numerous entrées, which is really the way to experience a restaurant, culinary abilities! Plus, who doesn't want to try everything they possibly can with friends?! Eggplant with garlic sauce- definitely a wonderful vegetarian dish. The eggplant was perfectly made, and the garlic sauce was not overpowering, and it made each bite of eggplant sumptuous. Mango shrimp- it's one of those dishes that is so pretty that you can't wait to dig in. Large shrimp, with sautéed veggies and lots of mango sauce. I love the shrimp, I'm just not a fan of mango and shrimp together. It's definitely a dish worth trying if you enjoy both. Basil chili lamb- I always love a good lamb dish, and especially when it's as perfectly made as this one was. It wasn't game at all. The meat was tender, juicy, lightly seasoned and absolutely delicious. basil chili beef- this was equally as delicious as the lamb dish. The beef was tender, and so flavorful! Coconut rice- omg! The race was light, fluffy, and the coconut flavor was not overwhelming. It was a lovely accompaniment to the entrées, and truth be told, we all inhaled our food and especially the rice. They're literally was not an empty bowl left behind. For dessert, we all shared dessert Platha. The mango ice cream was absolutely decadent and delicious. The platha was tasty, and the fresh banana with a mango ice cream made for a perfect bite! This is a great place to enjoy Burmese food with friends, family, a date night... It's a great experience! Parking is a tad tricky, but there are plenty of parking buildings around that make it so much easier. Reservations while not necessary, are highly encouraged. The restaurant was at full capacity during our experience, and with the lovely weather that we're experiencing, dining is available predominantly inside, but they do have some small seating outside. It all fills up quickly! Heartfelt thanks again to Angie and Bella. You two are rock stars, and thank you for taking such great care of us.

I asked if they could do something mild, but was told they don't offer that. I'm Indian and normally handle spice very well, so I was worried that "no spice" would be completely bland. I went with their lowest actual spice option: medium. Huge mistake. The first bite genuinely scared me. It tasted like someone had dumped an entire packet of chili directly into my mouth. My eyes immediately started watering, my mouth was on fire, and eating it was extremely uncomfortable. This wasn't a matter of me being sensitive to spice, the "medium" was insanely spicy. My friend, who is also South Asian and accustomed to spicy food, couldn't finish hers either. I politely told our waitress that the medium Pad Thai was far too spicy for me to eat. Her solution was to offer me sugar to pour over it. That sounded awful, so I declined. At that point I literally went on ChatGPT to figure out how I could salvage my meal. It suggested peanut sauce as one option to help tone down the heat, which sounded much more reasonable. I asked the waitress for some peanut sauce and was told I could have it for an additional charge. Considering I was only asking for it because their "medium" Pad Thai was practically inedible, I found that pretty disappointing. But I wanted to actually eat the food I had paid for, so I agreed. The peanut sauce helped slightly, but I basically had to eat a spoonful of peanut sauce with every single bite just to tolerate the Pad Thai. At that point, I wasn't enjoying dinner. The restaurant itself also felt very dirty. The floors looked like they desperately needed to be mopped, which made the overall experience even less appealing. Between the inedible food, the lack of any meaningful attempt to fix the problem, being charged extra for something I needed just to make the meal tolerable, and the cleanliness of the restaurant, I seriously considered leaving no tip. I ultimately did leave one, albeit reluctantly. Zero out of ten experience. I will absolutely never come back.

I asked for medium spice, which was pretty spicy and had a kick to it. I would probably get mild spice next time to let the rest of the flavors shine through. The pad Thai had the perfect balance of sweet and savory. Usually pad thai is too sweet for me, but I enjoyed this dish a lot. Service was a little slow since there was only one worker handling to-go orders and the rest of the tables, but the food made up for it. The interior is cozy with bar seating and booths. The dim lighting and jazz music added a relaxing and intimate touch too. So glad we found this place!!

That it is customary in Sacramento. Ok then, what about to those that are elders or disabled who can't bring the plates? I was lucky I had few of my fam to help but there's no warmth to this owner. No one even checked on us at all! We would have left but we had to pay upfront before we found out we had to be the waitress. Food wasn't even worth it (papaya was bland, pad Thai was average). Update: owner replied to this post. Everything that she stated wasn't true at all. I asked why we have to bring all the stuff in and she insisted that it's customary in Sacramento-- she did NOT asked us at all or did we asked, the owner said it immediately when we got seated that we HAD to bring it in. Yes I was upset AFTER we were told to bring the plates and everything in; we just came back from a vacation so we were in a good mood). Please don't make it seem that you were innocent as you also keep mentioning that is how things are in Sacramento and asked where I was even from. Also, we would've been more understanding if we didn't give us an attitude from the start and told us to get our own plate and bring it back in. A word of advice: please hire more staff since that would give some politeness to ALL customers. If you were so busy, how would you even have the time to explain why you wanted us to do waitress work. Please, you straight up and said we have to pick up our our plate of foods WITHOUT any of the understaff part. Again, owner keep trying to make a costumer experience in the wrong since honest review will hurt her business. Never in my Yelp reviews owner is so against a bad review --this just verifies how the owner is very defensive and keeps justifying without taking accountability of what actually happened (like how we even know she was working alone since we're outside). Also, please don't make any assumptions, they're not my husband or daughter (we never mentioned this and how inaccurate the owner perspective is). Further customers, please be aware when you leave bad reviews, expect the owner to persist that you're in the wrong (like she did with other previous bad reviews).

I'm not sure if management or chef has changed but their food is not what I remembered from years ago. We initially ordered their tofu pad thai and gai yang and immediately noticed how pricey their menu was. They have a wall of specials and I remember being shocked that their orange chicken was $24. I didn't mind paying more than what I was used to for my pad thai because I remembered their food was delicious but I was shocked when my pad thai came out. It was literally drowned in sauce and looked like it was a bowl of noodle soup. I was still optimistic hoping that it tasted better than it looked but it just tasted like sweet rice noodle soup. I was hesitant to bring it up to the waitress after two bites but so glad I did because I would have hated myself if I left without saying anything. The waitress was kind and offered to remake the dish. Instead, I opted for something else because I was afraid to be disappointed again. I ordered their tofu drunken noodles since I've gotten it here before and remember it being tasty. I confirmed that the drunken noodle was going to be a dry noodle dish and thankfully it was. It was good but not the best I've ever had. My boyfriend had their gai yang which is a marinated grilled chicken dish. He said it was pretty dry without the sauce on the side but the sweet chili sauce provided was pretty tasty. It's probably not worth $26 given the how dry the chicken was and he said he would never order it again. Overall, the customer service was great and portions were good. I had to deduct 3 stars from my previous review as the food quality has significantly gone down in my experience and doesn't justify the high menu prices in my opinion.

The small tofu cubes in the dish were hard and flavorless. Ntot a dish-ruining offense, but I must say that I didn't know tofu got that hard. Same thing for the pad see-ew. It was quite dry and had a distinctly burnt flavor the first time it came out, it tasted like ash in my mouth. The chicken was rather burnt. The staff was friendly and kindly replaced it for me, but the burnt flavor remained. I think the pan they're using must have been burnt. I didn't think the yellow curry was notable. The thai tea is good. The restaurant itself is friendly and cozy. Water is from the tap.

There's a reason this original spot stuck around for so long.. consistent, delicious, and open late night! #25 Bamee Bphet Yang 5/5* Duck Egg Noodle Soup is why I come here! Thai Canteen is the ONLY Thai spot that makes this duck noodle soup. Noodles are so plump and springy like the texture of freshly made ramen noodles. The broth is intense in flavor, amped up by the honey roasted duck and has this slightly salty, sweet umami taste. If it weren't for the "No MSG" red letters stamped on the menu board, I would've thought this soup had some MSG. The flavor is THAT delicious where you can't really pinpoint where it's coming from. #24 Gkuay Dtlow Reur (Boat Noodles) 3/5* The thin pho Noodles were fresh and cooked perfectly al dente, but the soup itself was lacking that beefy richness. The broth was watered down and bland. #26 Pad Thai Noodles with Tofu 5/5* Good portion size that is shareable for two. The soft tofu is plump and soaked up the pad thai sauce well. There's just enough sauce without the dish being overly saucy. The flavor is richer and less sticky sweet than other Thai places, making this more savory with a just slight hint of tamarind sweetness. Happy Hour Eggs Over Rice 1/5* This popped up on the Happy Hour menu one time and it is exactly what the name says. Just an egg omlette over a mound of white rice. The egg was overcooked, dry, and lacked any flavor. Even at HH prices, this is a hard pass. The location and hours are so convenient smack in the middle of downtown. You order at the counter, choose any seat, and the food comes out fast. Water is self service. This makes for a good lunch spot if you're short on time but want a good cooked meal. They have both after work HH and late night HH. There's a small bar inside as well and patio seating on the side.

Cloudy early Thursday afternoon and a bit of chill in the air. Time for soup!…read more My server was very pleasant, kind, and patient in explaining the soup offerings since there were none on the menu. I opted for the sweet and sour Tom Son version. The broth was a delightful and tangy sweet and sour broth filled with mushrooms and other vegetables and shrimp, squid, and scallops. I added some rice which balanced out the sourness if the soup perfectly! The squid was a bit chewy but the shrimp and scallops were good. The cherry tomatoes - red and gold - retained their yummy flavors and added to the fullness of the broth. Overall, a very delicious bowl! My only complaint - wish the music had been a bit lower. My server checked on me frequently and was attentive to me and all of her customers. A nice place to come to warm up and feel welcomed.

Ordered the Lao sausage and sticky rice…read more Flavors and food portion for the Lao sausage was decent but the quality here is not worth it. I was disappointed that their Lao sausage was a ratio of 50/50 meat and onions. Onions were more of a filler and that was too much onions in their Lao sausage for my personal preference or to even add chopped onions. Every bite had diced onions in it and texture was crumbly. Onions did help with keeping the sausage juicy and see why they added it in. The sticky rice I cannot speak for, did not taste like sticky rice, seems like they were cutting corners and added mochiko into their sticky rice. I will not get sticky rice here, especially if you're dipping the sticky rice into the dips.
