After a couple disappointing deliveries from Joy Luck, I decided to give this place a try. I ordered the Mongolian beef dinner special, with fried rice, hot and sour soup, and a crab puff, and a side of pork dumplings. The crab puff was fine, typical crab puff with sweet and sour on the side. Pork dumpings are good, rather large, and came on a little bed of cabbage. I really appreciate that small touch. They were a little soggy, but my apartment tends to be hard to find so I imagine they aren't so soggy if you eat in. I received egg drop soup instead of hot and sour. I tend to find egg drop soup bland, and this was no exception. But, it had a large amount of egg, and a couple peas and carrot bits, and was good with a bit of rooster sauce. I was really impressed when I opened up the container with fried rice and Mongolian beef. I was expecting the rice to be a small side, but there was rice in both of the small back compartments. It was your typical fried rice, nothing special. The beef took up almost the whole large compartment in the front, and was not oily or tough. It had a little kick - not super spicy, but good! The owners son is very unprofessional.. He answered the phone "Hello" Instead of Chef Cao's how can I take your order or something else professional.. He made us feel like we were wasting his time and we decided to order elsewhere because of his bad attitude.. This restaurant was recommended to me by a friend, but overall I was not impressed. I did love the option to order online, but never received a text or call when my food was done. As for the food, the eggroll was good but cold, the egg drop soup was quite bland and scalding hot, the fried rice just meh, and the beef and broccoli tasty, but the beef was tender to the point of being a little disturbing. In my search to find the best quality and quantity Asian food lunch special in College Station, this place is currently high up on my list. Chef Cao's has consistently offered me flavorful, fresh food every time I've eaten here or ordered it to my house. For the lunch specials, they serve still large portions and it comes with your choice of rice. However, I am not a huge rice eater and they allowed me to substitute a soup for a rice at no additional cost. I can always get 2 meals out of the portion size which means I'm getting 2 meals worth and a soup (or rice) for 5.99 or so. The food is fresh out and hot within minutes and each dish is actually flavorful and unique unlike similar restaurants in town which I feel the flavors all kind of run together between dishes. Bonus: they have a huge menu and I love the fact that there are tons of options even if I have no interest in some of the menu. This place isn't super trendy inside and has no kind of especially desirable or unique atmosphere, but that's not the reason you go to Chef Cao's. For the kind of restaurant Chef Cao's is and what they aim to serve- quick, casual , cheap Chinese food with lunch special to compete with the others in town I, am giving Chef Cao's 4 stars for their freshness, food quality, portion size, flexibility with personal food preference, and cheap prices. read more

Chef Cao's is the worst Chinese restaurant in town. Their meals don't actually include rice - every other Chinese restaurant in town includes rice when you order an entree. So, I'm sitting here boiling my own rice. If you add the cost of buying rice from them, they end up being more expensive than the other restaurants in town. They did not include a plastic container for the food either (like the other local restaurants do). My Mongolian beef is currently sitting in a cardboard delivery box while I'm cooking my own rice. I also ordered two egg rolls. One of their egg rolls is about half the size of the egg rolls from Joy Luck Delivery. It is not worth the trouble to order from this restaurant. They need to stop being so stingy with the food and realize that they are competing with other better restaurants. Oh, and reading the other reviews here, it appears they regularly fail their health inspections. In short, I am incredibly dissatisfied. I will not order from them again. Best Chinese I've found in BCS after many years. This location specifically. Food is great, prices are definitely reasonable, and take-out staff are always friendly. I'm honestly so sad because I've eaten here a few times before a while back, and it was fine. I'm not sure if it's the management or if it was an off-day, but it was sure a lot of money wasted for food different from what I ordered and otherwise flavorless. I'm allergic to mushrooms, and I specified in the notes to the chef both in English and Chinese that the food I was ordering could not have mushrooms, and so of course I receive it with. I've done this every time before, and have never had a problem, but this time, for most of the food, I can't begin to touch. The spring rolls were tiny, sloppy, and lacked the accompanying peanut sauce (I ended up just preparing some myself, but for $3.99, I felt ripped off). I don't remember exactly, but I was pretty sure entrees (especially ones that cost $11+) came with rice, and I didn't get any either. The Happy Family entree presentation looked beautiful, but upon tasting it, it wasn't salty, sweet, or any actual distinguishable flavor. Extremely disappointing. Maybe this is my fault for having ordered near their closing time, but if they were going to send me this mushroomed mess, I really wish they would have rejected the order. $24.87 of unpleasant. I visited this place about once a month. The food was pretty good if you know what to order. They offered a wide range of food from veggie to seafood. The taste was higher than average but I think it's the best Chinese food in this area. Honey glazed walnut shrimp was my favorite. I was crispy and sweet. I also would recommend steamed fish with ginger, Mapo Tofu, Deep Fried Tofu, snow leaf, and Chinese dry mustard (Chinese version of Sauerkraut) with pork. The decoration looked like typical Chinese restaurant. Just the rounded table with lazy susan on top, nothing fancy. The service was very fast but no accuracy. Last time one of my friend got sweet tea instead of Pepsi. So I gave this place 3 stars. read more

I am leaving one star only because the food was "ok" today. The flavor was fine but our soup was cold. After sending it back twice the soup finally returned warmish. I ordered delivery to the Residence Inn on University. Chef Cao is 1/2 mile away. Yet it took it close to 45 minutes for delivery. The food was absolutely disgusting! The wontons were cold and too tough to chew through. Couldn't even cut them with a fork. The spring rolls were freezing and, even worse, sticky. I have no idea what they were wrapped in but it smelled foul and was very sticky to the touch. I attempted to eat the sweet and sour shrimp. Oh my gosh, they were cold, tough and gross tasting. They didn't even taste like shrimp. I wasted $25 on trash! Please learn from my mistake and don't waste your money at Chef Cao. After receiving a delivery order that had been completely destroyed by the delivery driver, who by the way was tipped $8 on a $22 order, I called the restaurant and was told by the person on the phone that the next order would be taken care of. The next week I called to place an order and inquired as to what would be done to fix the situation from the previously destroid order was told I could receive a 15% discount on this order to which I replied, " thanks but no thanks I will be taking my business elsewhere. The food prices are pretty good, you can get a dinner plate for about $6.00 which is fair, but I must say that I would not order from them again for a few reasons. One, I come from NY and I have never tasted anything called fried rice that tasted anything like this. It tasted a lot like brown rice and was pretty bland. This is all your plate comes with with the exception of a very small spring roll (which they call egg rolls) and about 1/10 cup of soup. Also, the delivery man was run and my general tso's chicken had a lot of fat on it and still included the outer skin of the chicken. I didn't eat the rest because it did not taste good. I would like a place that serves chinese the way they do in the east but this lacked flavor and to call those egg rolls is just a plain lie. read more

We had a banquet at Chef Cao. When I asked for the bill, the waitor brought me a credit card slip showing only the total amount and a blank line for tip. I suspected that gratuity had been added, so I asked for an itemized receipt. Sure enough - 15% of gratuity had been included. I think the waitor intentionally played this trick to fool the customers since this was not the first time I found out this at this restaurant. In terms of serivce, there was little. The waitor forgot what drinks every one ordered and asked us to repeat. He disappeared between and after delivering the dishes. He did not know he should serve the soup for everyone. His service deserved 3% instead of 15%. I'll be very careful not to be cheated if I ever want to visit this restaurant again. read more

i gave them one star only because the food is indeed above average. For me, service is the key. On this, Chef Cao is the worst restaurant I have seen in the US. I just got out of the restaurant. I ordered two dishes: roast duck & spicy fish. Roast duck was served on time. Spicy dish was not served until after 20 minutes, when I felt something wrong and asked the waitress. I then found out that the dish was already cooked but they gave it to the son of the restaurant's owner. I had wasted 20 minutes of my time. I then told them I no longer need the fish. They did not even apologize. Instead, when my parents and I walked of the restaurant obviously disappointed, the waiters and waitresses just stared at us. No one apologized or said anything when we walked out. They are obviously not busy. What the F****? This is not the first time. Last time I went there alone. A kid led me in. Waited on a table for 10 minutes. No one came to say anything. I stormed out of the restaurant, without ordering anything. I weigh service much more than food. They do a few things differently compared to other authentic Chinese restaurants I've been to. The egg drop soup which is my favorite it's clear with some peas and cubed carrot bites. I've ordered this Togo and when I got it delivered the boy put his hand out... OK after taking an hour and 15 min for a few app. And soup and entre was kungpo chicken and sesame chicken which usually comes with rice it didn't. This boy wanted a tip... it's not required so rude to think I does anyway I gave him two dollars. I always look at the food before they leave and explained he didn't too much care or have a way to make the situation better. When I saw the soup it was grey and smelled horrid. The chicken small bite it was like it it sat there for as long as possible. Nasty I told the boy to get my order refunded and here's the food. He said nothing and walked out the apt. Complex. As I went to call I watched him throw the food away and miss the trash so it ended up in the street. I persist to call and ask for money bk and that I had given the boy the food and mentioned what I saw him do with it. He says he was there and asked him and it was incorrect. Like that was fast to get bk to the restaurant, but you can't bring the food in that manor.... ??? Like I don't care whom you are if someone wants money bk you do so.... customer is always right!
