We stopped by in May and really enjoyed their food so we decided to go back again while in town. We went for the more authentic Chinese dishes due to the last good experience and had high hopes for the Cumin Beef which was listed as a new recommended dish. Part of three dishes that we took to go. The other two dishes were alright but the cumin beef was the worst beef we've EVER had. It could not have been any drier and probably forgot to add salt. As we got to the bottom of the dish we saw a BIG slice of meat that looked weird and after untangling it, we discovered it was a big piece of plastic or Saran Wrap. It made us nauseous and threw the dish out. On top of that, we asked specifically when picking up our food whether utensils were inside and were assured but of course found none.... We think maybe the ownership has been changed which may explain the disappointing experience as the menu online which we ordered from last time looked nothing like what we ordered from today. I normally go to the one on William Finch but I didn't want to go all that way to college station so I decided to go to the one on University. I placed the order online with special instructions which unfortunately we're not followed. I asked for no veggies that was ignored. I am allergic to some of them. The beef was rubbery and chewy, and the rice was undercooked. If you're not going to follow the special instructions it may be better to delete them from your website. I still love to eat at this restaurant but I think I'm going to stick to the one on William Fitch in college station. read more

What a joke. Ordered on line, and after about a hour and fifteen minutes of waiting on my ordered. I called them. The guy said my card did not work. I read my card number to him and I saw the charge come across my phone. He then tells me it will be another 45 minutes to and hour! My family came to visit last month and we decided to try out Chef Cao's. I've been ordering from here since! It's my go to place when I feel like eating Chinese food (which is pretty often) ! Delivery is always fast and food prices are a steal compared to other restaurants. I get about 2 meals worth delivered to me for less money than it would take for a fast food restaurant to delivered to me. The lo mein noodles are my go to. I'm very impressed with Chef Cao's! I went in not having any expectations but I'm very pleased with the food. We ordered the more authentic items from their menu, cumin lamb and fish/tofu hot plate, both of which were hot, fresh, and flavorful. On one occasion, the portion and quality of the duck was smaller/worse than the other times, but on the other occasions the duck is fantastic, primarily the skin. I had previously enjoyed the flavor of the duck, though the skin wasn't particularly crispy. On my most recent visit, the skin was exceptionally crisp. read more

I was very impressed with this place considering it doesn't look too fancy. The prices are very good. A lot of the special meals come with soup, egg roll or crab puff, and fried or steamed rice, all for $7-$10. The portions are very large too. The waitress we had was very sweet, patient, and friendly. There was a mix up with one of the meals, someone ordered chicken with mushroom and instead got chicken, shrimp, mushroom and broccoli- but it was fine. I ordered the shrimp with lobster sauce. VERY VERY GOOD!!! My friend got the honey chicken. The waitress did mention that it was very sweet... and it WAS very sweet. A little too much, but we were warned. Relatively cheap and fast, but there are better places for the same price! Try Wokamole instead. Dishes aren't as flavorful as I would have liked (especially the brown and white sauces). Roasted duck was great; the skin was crispy and the meat was tender. The hoisin sauce that came with it was alright, but overall not complaining because it didn't take away from the meal and the duck seemed fresh. I got the dinner special so it was served on a bed of broccoli and rice (I picked white rice). My boyfriend had the Szechuan noodle soup and that was good too, but next time he said he's going to get the roasted duck. Prices were super reasonable for good Asian food (both menu items were not over $10). Service-wise, we were kindly seated and the waitress actually helped me decide on what to order! It is a very nice family-owned business. Also: they had some cool bubble waffle ice cream which we will definitely have to try once it gets hot again. All in all, I will definitely return. read more

Wall art next to my table is peeling, leaving the potential for debris to fall in food. They won't work with you on requests. This is the most authentic Chinese food in town and one way to know that is because almost everyone in there is Chinese! I have been to China 4 times and lived over there for a year and this is the closest in college station that it gets. I love their large family style tables- family style is the way to go because you get so much variety. The eggplant, spicy green beans and the egg and tomato dish are the best veggie dishes we order- as far as meat, we like happy family, Mongolian beef, and honey chicken. We've been here a few times while visiting or after dropping off my daughter. The food we ordered was much better than our first experience. My husband really liked the spicy beef noodle soup which he liked better than any version we can get here in Austin! My daughter and I love the Mongolian beef which was super tender and flavorful. They recently catered a lunch in my department, which looked ok but tasted awful and left me with a pounding MSG-induced headache. If you are not MSG sensitive and don't mind bland Americanized food, and are on a limited budget, you might give them a try. The one good thing about their food is that it is great incentive to cook at home more. Back in the day Chef Cao's was the best Chinese restaurant in town. I feel like sometimes the quality of restaurants is inversely proportional to the number of locations--as they have added locations their quality has plummeted. At the same time several good authentic Chinese places have opened in BCS. I had a small helping of a wonton soup, some rice, and several kinds of meat (beef, chicken pork) in slightly gooey sauce. As I eat my leftovers from last nights Chef Cao's, I've decided to rate them with a firm 3.5. Their portion sizes and prices are great but the overall food could be better. I ordered a combination noodle soup and it lacked flavor. I asked for hot oil and it tasted like tomatoes. We also ordered the kung pao chicken with fried rice and it wasn't that bad. I noticed that other customers ordered authentic Chinese, and so I might be back to try that rather than what's on the regular menu. I didn't really have a good first impression of the store, with its americanized ads and menu, but was pleasantly surprised with its variety of authentic Chinese food that it had, from its Mapu Tofu to the Peking duck. Never have I ever had a KP triple that comes with big chunk of bamboo shoot or pasty sauce that is sour-ish, nor have I ever had a twice cooked pork that taste like nothing. Aside from the quality of food, the service is quite terrible. The only time we were 'served' is when they take everyone to the table and ordered the drinks. The waitress sits around and do not check on you. The waitresses don't even bother giving you a refill unless you call them to do so. They do not even bother thanking you for going over there.
