Great food. They have very generous portions. General Tso's is the best around town. However, their customer service leaves much to be desired. They have difficulty accepting the fact that they may be wrong at times. For example, I once ordered white rice and received it cold. I asked for another batch of rice and got the manager instead of the rice telling me that the rice was fine. After arguing with him about the temperature of the rice, he finally conceded and gave me another batch of rice. Unfortunately, it was still cold. Today, they got my carryout order wrong. I asked for white rice for my kids plate and got french fries instead. I also asked for fried rice on another plate and got white rice on that meal. Horrible 50 dollars 'Pekín Duck'. BE AWARE, It is NOT Pekín Duck!! First they gave us the skins in a crepe (like a tortilla) and said that the duck was inside and would be cooked to serve in the table. When they brought it to the table, big surprise, it was like chicken and vegetables with a taste of beef, so hard to chew and with almost no meet. I felt robbed!! I have known and eatn at this place for many many years now since opening and have ordered out and dinned in this family owned place. i haven't ordered in a while however i just placed an order of beef & broccoli as I have many times before and i have to say today it tasted totally different, tasted horrible the beef was not beef, the brown sauce had a weird like sour taste in many bites as if it had been maybe left out and or warmed up the next day(s) and reserved, definitely wasn't fresh & greasy, egg rolls were just bread deep fried without veggies with the inside bread soggy!!! spending over $30 for two people lunch was a waste!! I will not ever be ordering from them ever again! their reputation of taste & freshness has definitely down graded to zero! Chef Chan's Review: Alright some me and my wife went there tonight with the four year old. And I have to say the food was good. Started out with some dumplings and crab cheese puffs and egg rolls. And then we shared some chicken with cashews and roasted pork lo mein. I really like the roasted pork in the lo mein had a great flavor to it, as well as the lo mein it's self is better than most lo meins that I have ever had. My wife and I were long-time patrons of Chef Chana when it was on Kuykendahl near Cypresswood before it closed several years ago. When we moved to the Woodlands we were thrilled to find out there were two Chef Chans there. This place advertises itself as Chef Chans II and is supposedly not affiliated with the other Chef Chans in the area (The "Original" ). We ordered items we used to get-shrimp toast and Chef Chans Beef. We would have ordered spring rolls but they could not be found on the menu so we settled for egg rolls. The shrimp toast wasn't bad and included shrimp much larger than what the old restaurant used to serve. However it was a little burnt, even though the taste was ok. It was the Chef Chans Beef which was a huge disappointment. It looked like, and had the texture of what looked like beef jerky. Hard to cut and hard to chew. The pieces were thin and were obviously over-cooked. My wife could not eat much of her order and left most of it on the plate. White rice used to be served with it but this place served a bland fried rice with it. The egg roll we got was also ok, but maybe just a little over-cooked. There was only one other couple in the restaurant at 5pm on a Saturday. This being said, the service was good, but very impersonal. We were told Chef Chans had reopened for business after selling an old resteraunt. Being new to the area we went and it was AMAZING (Indian Springs)... fast forward, we decide to order online only only to discover that we inadvertently ordered from the OLD CHEF CHANS. I called to cancel and they said NO REFUND come get your food or loose your money?! So we drive over to Grogans Mill and picked up the dinner. IT WAS HORRIBLE. We threw out the entire entre after one bite, it was old stale chicken that tasted twangy and was coated in watery brown liquid, the fried rice had NO egg and was like white rice coated in brown stuff w grease...so we decided to eat the eggrolls because we were so hungry and bit inside to realize these were grease covered cabbage with NO carrots or anything else inside, just tiny bits of cabbage?! I called the place to let them know and gave them my pickup number but they got defensive and told us they make the chicken fresh every order. Trust me, they don't...it WAS OLD and NASTY. We got the crispy skin in one pot and what looked like beef with broccoli in another pancakes plum sauce and spring onions. When we called to ask where our duck was they told us that the thing that looked like beef with broccoli was our duck, well I have had Peking duck many times and it looks like sliced roast duck or duck breast. It was another yelp! review that gave me the courage to try Chef Chan's again. (Alright, seeing now that I'm the first to review, I must've read about Chef Chan's at "another" review website. EEEEEEEGADD!!) I had ordered take out from this location in the past and it was not worth the $40 tab. Chef Chan's was one of the only restaurants opened on Christmas that was also near my house. Starving Football Player was complaining (he was hOngrey) and I wasn't about to cook a meal after all the other Christmas events that took the bulk of my holiday. On this occasion, rather than attempting to order something I've enjoyed elsewhere, I asked the manager what was good. He pointed me to the specialty menu (this is a recurring theme I've learned) where I found Sesame Shrimp and a Black Pepper Beef that was very similar to the de-lick-titiuos (new word) Honey Black Pepper Beef from Fung's Kitchen. I also ordered Egg Rolls (turned out to be greasy spring rolls) and an order of Fried Tofu. Being that I've been spoiled with the Fried Tofu from Hollywood Vietnamese on Montrose, this was less than desirable. Although the flavorful sauce they served it with was drinkable, it didn't make up for the soggy fried covering and cold center. The better points of the meal were the perfectly cooked and battered Sesame Shrimp and the Peppered Beef dish. It was so good, I wasn't too concerned with the fact that they gave us small portions of meat. Chef Chan's was really good at least with the entree department. In my personal experience it will be hit or miss with various menu items. My hope is that, with additional visits, certain menu items will turn out to be consistently prepared well. Chef Chan's is worth a visit. Ask questions. The employees I encountered were very kind and helpful. They were concerned that I was pleased and didn't have to wait longer than necessary. If one of the appetizers had been a hit, I might have given one more star. Maybe next time. Update 12/31/2007: Ordered take out again today. Worked late and didn't have time to meet up with friends for the holiday. The Sesame Shrimp was as wonderful as the last time. Tried two new items: Garlic Chicken and Steamed (Pork/Shrimp) Dumplings. The Garlic Chicken was a little too salty, but the shredded mushrooms, julienned red bell pepper and water chestnuts over white rice tempered the sodium level enough to make it memorable. The Dumplings were well presented with colorful pink and green touches (food coloring perhaps?). Regardless, the sweet-salty dipping sauce made the dumplings extremely enjoyable. A vegetable option is available. Chef Chan's is growing on me. If they keep it up, I may need to add a star. read more

Tried this because everyone was raving about it on the Nextdoor App. We ordered 2 combo dinners for takeout, broccoli beef and orange chicken, hot and sour soup, egg drop soup, white and brown rice. The egg roll, wonton, and crab Rangoon were dry and hard like they were old and re-fried just to get rid of them. The orange chicken was the same. Extremely dry chicken and hard breading because it had clearly been sitting and then tossed in the fryer again. Broccoli beef was pretty good but nothing to write home about. I'd say the soups were the best part but after spending $40 for 2 dinners we were disappointed and wishing we had just gone to Panda Express because the quality would have been better than what we experienced. This is our third visit to Chef Chans; it will be our last. We ordered the Chef Chan Beef and it tasted like leftover parts triple fried to an absolute crisp and coated in a thick syrupy sauce. I will be shocked if we don't end up sick tonight. We are big fans of fried beef in a sweet/spicy sauce, but this took both components way too far. Way overpriced and not impressed with this showing. I remember it being great the last time, but this was bad enough to keep me from coming back. I think we would have been happier with the food court at the mall. We moved to The Woodlands not long ago and decided to try to find our local Chinese takeout place. Chef Chan's did not disappoint. Their orange chicken was the best I have had in a long time - but it is not spicy like the menu says. I am not into the spice, but my husband is, so it is a personal preferance. It was not a greasy orange chicken at all - surprisingly. Also, their crab puff's were great and huge, the beef with mixed vegetables was tender and well seasoned, I loved it. We ordered sweet and sour chicken for the hubby and kids - it was decent, though no my favorite chinese dish anyway. Only disappointment was in their chicken fried rice - it seemed soggy to me, maybe too much soy sauce. I gave it four stars because of the rice, the price being a little high (but not over the top) and the fact you had to pay with check or cash. Perhaps the most disgusting "Chinese" food I've ever had. General Taos chicken was sweet, not spicy. The lettuce wraps were actually chicken soup with literally NO seasoning. The shredded beef? My Lord it was only gristle. So gross. I live less than a mile away and everything was cold. The chicken was spongy the fried dumplings were squishy. Also, the fried rice was just rice with soy sauce on it, no eggs or veggies or anything in it. It took them less than 5 minutes to fill my order, how do you prepare and cook two meals, rice, lettuce wraps, and dumplings in 5 minutes? You can't! All of the food is obviously old and reheated. The only reason they get one star is because there is no option for none. I do not know where all these 4-5 star ratings are coming from! We have given them three opportunities due to their reviews for decent food and they just do not deliver. With every order of chinese from any place we always include the house special fried rice, and chicken fried rice. Two out of three times the house special fried rice was actually just ham (& the veggies) and white rice. No other meat, and not fried. The third time they left out the shrimp, which was the whole point of us ordering the house special one AND it was cold. So complete fail there. The chicken fried rice was presented fine, but tasted cheap and the chicken tasted like that canned chicken you get at Walmart. I can make better fried rice than that. Way better ... First order: Eggrolls: Delivered cold. Enough S&S sauce for a small child's bite. Hot Oil: Came in a container that was probably supposed to be for the S&S sauce. There was enough hot oil to last a month. RIDICULOUS. Schuetzen Beef: Delivered warmish. And I discovered the main ingredient to add the spice - FRANKS RED HOT ... it was disgusting Second order main entree: S&S Chicken: Delivered warmish and soggy. More S&S sauce than the last time, but not enough for both me and my hubs. Third order main entree: Beef & Broccoli: Hot beef and still frozen Broccoli ...need I say more? Deliver time averaged for all three different times we took a chance on them: 50 minutes Their price: Beyond unreasonable and expensive. That is directly geared towards the assumption that the $15 for fried rice (which wasn't surprising when we went over the menu - it is what we expected) would be enough to feed at LEAST me and the hubs. NOPE. We're not ordering again, and actually found a much better place, with great portions for their lower cost, and is in the same delivery area as Chef Chan's. Not the greatest food, and they don't seem to have many customers. In fact, at 4ish in the afternoon, my friend and I were the only ones in the restaurant. The chicken skewers my friend ordered were dry, and unseasoned except for salt, with no dipping sauce. The beef in the meal I ordered wasn't cooked completely and had a very old taste. I will never go back, which is a shame, since it's right across the street from my house. Also, the customer service made you kinda feel like you were inconveniencing the staff. I ordered the beef and broccoli and must admit it was delicious and a generous portion. My girlfriend on the other hand ordered General Tso's chicken and she was a little disappointed. The portion was good but the seasoning was a little less then desirable. We will have to give Chef Chan's a second chance. I've lived in Spring for 20 years. Chan's was here before we were, so it must be doing something right. Spring is pretty middle-class and the restaurant, correspondingly, is not edgy but it is quiet and pleasant, we have always gotten very good service--attentive but not hovering--and I've liked everything I've ordered. It's pretty standard Americanized Chinese food, but it's good. Broccoli with beef or chicken has always been a favorite of mine; the meat is good and the vegetables are lightly-cooked. read more
