Underwhelmed. Wonton soup was like a piece of dough in the broth, the shrimp with veges spicy dish was just so so. The shrimp was tiny po boy shrimp ... Not good crunchy shrimp. My party got Mongolian beef, he felt the beef was less than onions. I liked the brown rice with no up charge and the veges but just wished shrimp was better quality. Will not be back unless I just absolutely had to eat in that area. Came here due to reviews I read but here's my take. Was expecting more from foodie's reviews. We have been eating here since 1987 and even though the Grandpa is gone the food is tops for our area. Their special dumplings are out of this world. I have never eaten better dumplings in Chinatown. Their Chef specials are better eaten at the restaurant instead of to go. read more

After a quick trip to Home Depot and an afternoon spent repainting my 1/2 bath, I decided take-out was the ONLY option. After all, I'd just spent hours cleaning up paint, so who wants to clean dishes? I usually order sushi, but wanted some burn-your-lips-off spice, so I opted for Chef Chan's after perusing their many dishes denoted "spicy." One quick note: If you order delivery, they only accept checks or cash - good thing I still had some checks laying around. The food was delivered within 30 minutes, which was mildly impressive given that the restaurant is on the other side of The Woodlands from my house. I decided on General Tso's chicken with crabmeat puffs and hot & sour soup. The soup was perfect - hot and very spicy, with thin strips of tofu. The crabmeat puffs were a bit disappointing - the cream cheese flavor overpowered everything else, and they were a bit soggy. General Tso's chicken was less than spicy UNTIL you add the yellow sauce that comes with it. Zing! It's like getting a giant glob of wasabi in your soy sauce - it's clear-your-sinuses-hot. After adding a liberal amount of the fantastic yellow sauce to my Tso's, it was perfect. I couldn't even smell the paint fumes anymore... In all, an enjoyable, if not remarkable, take-out option when you're simply too covered in matte interior Chocolate Coco to get out of the house. read more

Ate here this afternoon for lunch. I ordered the chicken and broccoli lunch special with fried rice. My food came out in a timely manner however it had deep fried chicken on it, I told the waiter it wasn't my order. He then can back with another plate with brown rice instead. My better judgement told me to take the plate, so I did. The chicken lacked any flavor what so ever, and the brown rice was.... well, not what I asked for so it wasn't any good either. I didn't finish my meal, it wasn't worth the calories. Why two stars you may ask... well it didn't make me sick. One of the best places to dine in The Woodlands if you want a quiet atmosphere, white table cloths, and soft music. We have be coming to Chef Chan's for 15 years and the food has gotten better and the menu more varied. The staff, most of whom have been there for a long time are competent and pleasant. It is one fo the few Chinese restaurants where you give them specific cooking instructions and they will be followed. I had the Chef Chan's Orange Beef this evening, asked for it extra crispy with lots of sauce. Good size portion, wonderful flavor and texture. Just liked asked for. My wife has the Sesame Chicken, very tender, flavorful. We shared a fired wonton stuffed witha curried meat also very good. I highly recommend it. read more

Pros: The Pepper Steak is great. So are most of their dishes but this is my favorite. The Crab Puffs are perfectly fried and never oily. No MSG. Vegetables are very fresh, never wilted or overcooked. Every sauce I've had has been delicious not too salty. Special fried rice is packed to the complete capacity of the container and never disappoints. Cons: Dining area closes early, plan on takeout only after 8 PM. You take your chances with the Sweet and Sour Chicken, at times you'll get more breading then chicken. Same with the Beef with Broccoli, it seemed to be more broccoli and sauce then beef the 2 times I've ordered it . In my experience my takeout orders are ready in 10 minutes and very hot when I get it home. When I've chosen delivery it seems faster then I can usually get ready myself ready, load up in the car and get over there. I've been ordering from them for over a year and have never had any mistakes on my orders. The family that owns this establishment are always very friendly when they greet me even though I tend to order late. read more

This is by far the best Chinese food we have eaten by far!!! It's got amazing taste and trust me we live Asian food and have tried many Asian restaurants but this is the BEST ONE!! My family has been eating here since the first day they opened. Always feel like we are getting very special attention then realize everyone is getting that same special treatment. Do not waste your time here. The food quality is at par with the el-cheapo Chinese that you get in a mall food court. The food is oily, tasteless and eminently forgettable. We haven't been to chef chan's in a few years and decided to give it a shot again. Wasn't bad but wasn't good either. The egg rolls were pretty good. The special fried rice wasn't too special and tasted completely bland. We also had the orange chicken and it didn't taste like orange at all, or spicy like it said on the menu. Chicken tasted frozen and the sauce tasted like general chicken goop. We did like the white meat chicken and the hot mustard a lot. For the money i will continue to opt for Beijing in the future. I have been a loyal patron for years. The dishes have very tight sauces that are each distinct and very flavorful. The meats are cooked to perfection, and the vegetables are crisp and fresh. Some of my favorites are the spicy, crispy fish, Chef Chan's chicken, crispy shrimp with mixed vegetables, spicy green beans, and hot and sour soup. The lo mein is the best that I have had. I love the fried rice, because it is moist and flavorful. Dinner is expensive, so I try to come during lunch, where they have several choices of entree, with soup, a side of fried rice, and a small, but delicious spring roll. The service is excellent or iffy, depending on which owner is there. The food is always fantastic. read more

Was not very impressed. May give them another try at some point but not in any big hurry to do so. The service was above average but found the food mediocre. I had my usual stand-by at Chinese restaurants - general Tsao's Chicken - and it just didn't have the wow factor that I was expecting. My wife had the Sesame Chicken and it was pretty decent. I have never eaten IN the restaurant, but have always ordered using their delivery. I just live around the corner, but their delivery is always fast and the food is fantastic. The steamed dumplings are the best. My only complaint is that they are expensive. Otherwise, you can't go wrong. read more
