The service was fast and friendly, and the interior was pretty nicely designed. It is definitely very modern and way more upscale than it looks like from the outside in its strip mall location. There were some other dishes that I would really like to try, which were out of stock, as my visit was after a major holiday. How I know I've gained an affinity for Chef Jiang is the fact that I are there with a friend on Monday and ended up there again on a Friday because I was thinking too much about their food. Definitely a delight and worthy add to Hartford area's authentic Chinese food options. I've gone here for friend dates and husband dates with parties of 2. I've gone here for family dinners or group friend dinners of 5-10 in the party. In any case, you won't leave here hungry!! Always start off with the hot tea. It's delicious and keeps your stomach cleansed as you get through the various dishes. The apple soju here is also a favorite and I learned from Chef Jiang I like my soju cold. For 5 people 2-3 bottles was more than enough After eating here so many times, I love that I can get something different each time based on what I'm feeling. Feeling spicy? Definitely options for that. Feeling less spicy? There's options there too. In a recent friends dinner we were pleasantly surprised at how many vegetarian options there were as we had a mixed group of vegetarian/pescatarian/meat eaters. In fact, shout out to Wei who checked in with us to ask which dishes we wanted to make without meat to accommodate our veggie eating friends. There's something for everyone! Don't run away just because you see the chili pepper. My personal favorites for those who may not be in a spicy mood include the cabbage with pork, soup dumplings, cabbage with clear noodle wraps, Chiba tofu, pumpkin cookies, general Tsos chicken, braised pork in mao, and Camellia Oil Chicken. If you're wanting to try something different, the century egg with eggplant was a surprising favorite at our table! I will say if you've never heard of century egg before, it's worth trying even after you look it up! I will also personally say the cabbage with pork (can also be done without pork) is so good that I think I've consistently ordered it every time I've been here, including takeout. Don't skip on this! I do like a little kick in my food so the spicy dishes are in my favorites! I love the dry fish pot which has smooth white fish fillets and lots of bell peppers, mushrooms, and goes great with rice. I also really like the spicy cucumber salad. It's spicy but somehow a refreshing spicy! While the Camellia Oil Chicken can be done not spicy if you don't put on the sauce, I was addicted to that spicy sauce and made sure to have it on rice. If you have the appetite and want a real Hunan dish, the spicy broiled sea bass is a show stopper. So much fish and many veggies with it, you'll definitely be full. Other dishes I think about often are the pickled veggies with fresh tilapia, the Chiba tofu, glass noodles with cabbage, and the sticky rice version of their shaomai dumpling. Somehow I haven't tried their whole menu yet. But I'm eager to keep going back to do so! Dessert options are hidden in their appetizer menu. Whether it's the dessert taro that turns you into a sugar artist through the hot sugar caramelized on taro, or the golden buns, or the red bean sticky rice fish, they're all options that you'll want to make room in your stomach for! Best part is that we got our bill, split it, and went "wait this wasn't too crazy in price". This is my second time back here in one week!! I first tried the place out on Tuesday and knew this was the place I had to bring back my mom for Mother's Day. Everything was delicious!! We ordered sooo much food: spare ribs, pork soup dumplings, sea bass in signature chili oil, braised pork belly, lamb stir fry, beef stir fry and the beef flat noodles. My favorite was the beef flat noodles and braised pork belly!! My mom was so impressed!! I brought my dad together as well and he enjoyed the meal very much. The reason why I didn't give a full 5 star was that service could've been better. I did have to wave down a server several times for different things. Chef Jiang Restaurant in Farmington opened in the space formerly occupied by China Pan Restaurant. Chef Jiang completely remade the space. With high ceilings, floor to ceiling installations, curtains, wood floors, punches of blue and orange, and cool art, the restaurant looks modern and glorious. Although the menu offers plenty that is familiar such as General Tso's Chicken, various meats and veggies in garlic sauce, lo mein and dumplings, Chef Jiang takes big swings with its user friendly menu, which includes large pics of the dishes. I've had two recent experiences with Chef Jiang. First, I was the guest of a friend for a dine in experience. I'm not factoring that meal into my score, but I will discuss it because we had some cool food. We ordered Sour and Spicy Escargot. In addition to the escargot, the dish consisted of chopped vegetables such as different colored peppers and green beans. The dish was spicy and garlicky, but not in an overpowering way. It paired well with the mild shrimp fried rice we ordered. There were great contrasting textures and flavors. It was a terrific dish and I will definitely order it again. The fried rice was very good too, and the shrimp were cooked perfectly. We also ordered (1) String beans and Japanese style eggplant, (2) Fresh Tilapia and Pickled Vegetables in a yellow broth, and (3) Vegetable dumplings. The String Beans and Eggplant had vibrant colors, great flavor and contrasting textures between the snappy green beans and soft eggplant. The Tilapia dish was new for me. It was kind of like a soup, with mild, perfectly cooked Tilapia and glass noodles, but the pickled vegetables added surprising bursts of good acidity. Such a cool dish. The dumplings were also great. I returned for lunch takeout not long after our dinner. I ordered Hunan Lamb and pork lo mein. The Hunan Lamb had a medium spicy, garlic and ginger flavor. It had great color and texture with chopped peppers and greens. The vegetables were a step or two up from most places. I like that CJ has just the right amount of sauce for its dishes. The pork lo mein was good too. I don't know, but I wouldn't be surprised if the noodles were made in house. The portions were huge. I got three meals out of it. I'm a big fan of Chef Jiang. Ahhh my daughter and I just stepped into this fabulous place on Saturday on our way to the mall. Let me tell you!! It was amazing. My normally finnicky eater enjoyed every bite of her wonton soup, bok choy, bao (OMG the Bao!!). I also ordered the dan dan mien which my daughter had a bite of the top before I mixed in all the good stuff and she enjoyed that as well (till it got spicy). I love spicy and I think next time I might ask for them to raise the heat a little bit. Other than that the food was absolutely phenomenal. You can taste that it's homemade and truly authentic. I've always struggled to find an authentic sit down Chinese restaurant, and I'm so happy to say I've finally found one. I really appreciated the pictures on the menu, because it definitely helped me influence what I was going to order. Absolutely the best lo mein and dumplings, and I think I died and went to heaven when I tasted the steamed white buns. It's worth a visit searching this place out though because here you can sample a wide variety of authentic dishes. The decor is bright and snappy, and the service was the same! Some of my favorite dishes were the pork with pickled beans, the fried lotus root, and the Chiba tofu. Lotus root is one of my favorite Chinese vegetables, and these were crunchy and garlicky! Yum! When we arrived on a Friday night they were very busy. We decided to go walk around the plaza to pass some time while we waited for it to clear out a bit. We probably walked around for over an hour and by the time we got back there was still a 20 minute wait.. it's nice to see a place that busy. Some of the servers were even running trying to catch up and it looked as though some of the kitchen help were delivering food to the tables. Once seated and able to really look around I was able to appreciate the decor. It is really beautiful inside. We ordered hot tea to drink which was delivered in this beautiful kettle with a warmer. We also got the soup dumplings, vegetable dumplings, Mongolian beef, and shrimp lo mien. This is we're we were disappointed. The food was presented beautifully! I loved the plates and the presentation.. however our soup dumplings didn't have any broth in them and the outside of the dumpings were kind of dry, the vegetables dumplings were okay, And the lo mein and Mongolian beef slightly lacked in flavor. I'd like to chalk this up to them being really busy trying to push plates out because of all the great things I've heard about this place and also, by the time we were leaving we saw another table receive soup dumplings that looked amazing and steaming hot. We will be back on a week night when it's slower to give this place another shot. I was very excited to try Chef Jiang, one of the handful of Authentic Chinese eateries in the Connecticut river valley. I love the decor and the interior is very clean and modern. The menu looked exciting and I loved the pictures. Unfortunately the food was fairly disappointing. Perhaps I ordered the wrong dishes or the main Chef was not there on the night. For all the effort put into creating a modern authentic Chinese restaurant, more attention to the taste and quality of the food is essential. 1. The FuChi FeiPian 5/10 - Nice pieces of beef, the stomach was cut way too large for easy bites, No tendon that is included at Shu and Oriental Taste (Northampton). Unfortunately, chef didn't add enough soy or salt to make it savory enough. All oil, no flavor. 2. Wontons in Chili Oil 红油抄手 3/10- The worst of any Chinese restaurant in the area. Sauce was completely off. Chef probably did not taste or did not know how to make it. Very very salty! not enough vinegar, no sweetness. No tang. Wontons itself tasted cheap. Most likely not a hand-made skin. 4. Xiaolongbao 7/10- Solid. The flavor of the filling was good. Most of the bao still had soup inside. A more hearty style...not delicate like a dingtaifeng. Oddly not served with any ginger as is expected of authentic Chinese. 5. 盐酥鸡 Popcorn chicken with basil. 3/10. Flavor was spot on, but the chicken was extremely dry. There was no meat left inside the fried batter- all the moisture had been fried out. The pieces were way too small to be fried as long as they were. 6. Pea Shoots- 8.5/10 ( Not the same as Menu picture). Was excited to try because the Menu had a picture of 小豆苗 small pea shoots as it's a vegetable harder to find. Unfortunately it was a bait and switch, the pea shoots were just the regular ones normally available in the area. That said, Chef knew how to stir fry vegetables. Excellent amount of garlic and right amount of salt. Overall, disappointing first try but definitely willing to go again. Perhaps the dishes catered more to the American crowd with a higher turnover have more consistency. read more

The decorations of the restaurant is very open and spacious, a nice modern look for a Chinese restaurant! The menu is the classic big book that you have to flip through with lots of pictures and description that make you want to order everything. Huge menu, amazing food! Although situated in a strip mall, the inside is well designed and decorated, with ample seating. We had a tough time deciding what dishes to order due to how amazing everything looked and sounded. We began with the cucumber in chili oil, which was bright, fresh, and flavorful with a lot of sesame oil and a slight kick of chili peppers. Next was the pork soup dumplings, which was the most disappointing dish we had due to the soup leaking from each dumpling before we even picked it up. The wrapping was very thick, especially on the top, but the filling was good...just not great and without the broth to slurp. Our mains were the scallion fried rice, salt and pepper chicken, and eggplant and garlic sauce. The rice was very light and simple but very good, with bits of scallion and even scallion flowers. The chicken was crispy and powdered with flavor. The eggplant was large, cooked perfectly, and swimming in a deep, rich garlic sauce. A Chinese restaurant where Chinese people are eating is a good sign that you're going to get an authentic meal. Our family never orders their own dishes. We put everything in the middle and all food is fair game. This is how everyone was eating and I knew it was going to be good. We tried steamed, fried and soup dumplings for appetizers. The fillings were home made and delicious. For mains we got the braised pork, cumin beef, bok-choy with garlic and beef fried rice. Let's just say, when you see your child take their first bite and their eyes go wide followed by an approving head nod, you've done well as a parent...at least for a few hours. Lol. A little bowl of rice in one hand and chopsticks in the other and everyone went to town on authentic chinese deliciousness. The soup dumplings were delicious but did not have soup in it. Also the cumin chicken dish was a bit salty, but was fine when eating with rice. I was a little concerned about how spicy the food might be since I am not a fan of extreme numbing spicy foods. I've tried this place twice for a fair review and unfortunately it's a pass for me. I've seen this place mentioned by some CT foodie influencers and was excited to see xiao long bao (soup dumplings) offered in Connecticut. I've tried the crab and pork soup dumplings, pork soup dumplings, the steamed cabbage with pork, and the braised beef noodles soup. Both times I ordered to-go, but I did eat it right away in my car. Crab & Pork Xiao Long Bao: Everytime my family comes from California, we go to NYC Chinatown or Flushing for "self-guided food tours". Crab & Pork XLB are always my favorite on our dumpling tours. The XLB at Chef Jiang have the flavor, but they are small and the skin is too thick. The to-go containers for these suck because the XLB stick together which causes the skin to break apart and the soup to leak. All but 2 broke, but the 2 that stayed in tact still didn't have much soup at all. The traditional dipping sauce for XLB is soy sauce, black vinegar, and ginger. I don't know if this comes pre-mixed at the restaurant, but it did to-go. I wish it came separate because I would have liked more vinegar taste. There still aren't really any other good XLB in Connecticut so if you want to try them without going out-of-state, this place is fine. Just know that if the skin breaks, you will lose all the soup inside. Cabbage with Pork Dry Pot: My cousin from NY got this because she orders this every week near her school. For $13.95, this was quite pricey for some steamed cabbage and very few thin, tough strips of pork. Another reviewer mentioned the same of this dish so I take it that this is just how it is made. I couldn't really make out any other flavor than "spicy". Braised beef noodles soup: I absolutely love braised meats. It is something I get often when I see it on menus. I am not one to be afraid of fat. Fat is usually where all the flavor is. But this was PURE fat. Braised beef soup should render the fat from the beef into the broth and should leave behind tender beef. I would expect a fatty broth and some fat left on fork-tender pieces of beef. I ended up pulling out every piece of FAT and was left with only 2 pieces of decent beef meat. I even tried chewing on the fat to get my meal's worth, but it was so bad. This is not what braised beef is. Additionally, since I ordered to-go, the noodles were packed separately. When I opened the noodle container, a sour smell hit me. But I am not picky and still ate the noodles in the soup. The broth was OK, a little bland. But the meat (pure fat) was the biggest letdown. The inside is beautiful and trendy. They have nice decor and free wifi. Lots of space and a calming ambiance. But based on my experience, I probably won't be coming back. read more

Pretty fast in serving their food! Recommend come to it early since its spots fill up pretty fast. Recommend it if you want to challenge yourself for spicy Hunan cuisine. Though you can also try it out and tell them for less spice. read more

Lomein noodles were very dry very little flavor and very little liquid rice had enough onions for three batches more than what we got very overpowering Chinese vegetables had what appeared to be sand dollars or some odd looking Chinese vegetable and it was mostly that no carrots hardly any broccoli and no other vegetable besides some chopped peppers I would not consider that authentic Chinese vegetables there was barely any filling in our crab rangoons and the spicy shrimp though it did not look like it in the photo we're supposed to be spicy shrimp the spices were all over the shell of the entire intact shrimp the shrimps had the shells the heads the eyeballs the feet hanging down and it was all fried and the shells and the heads had to be taken off and then the feet had to be pulled off and then the deveining but a time you're done they were so overcooked that the shell was cooked into the meat it was ripping the meat apart trying to get the shells off you got little bits and pieces and after three of the shrimp we gave up $25 down the drain what a waste like what was the purpose of putting the seasoning all over a shell that you knew had to get thrown away anyways and there was literally nothing on the shrimp on the inside naturally as it was all on the outside ordered beef fried rice as well as pork fried rice couldn't tell which was which as both meats were skinny stringy and gray couldn't tell by tasting either either they were both gray tough and tasteless read more

This is by far the best authentic Chinese cuisine I've had since moving here from DC. You can't go wrong with anything on this menu. And do yourself a favor by telling them to not go easy on the spice. The Xiao Long Bao is to die for. My favorite is the pork. Each sip of the soup is like a velvety heaven in your mouth. Top it off with a little vinegar after drinking the soup and enjoy the bite. It's delightful. Make sure to order two sets as your going to want to keep eating these things. It gets busy after 5:30 so make a reservation. And be ready to be treated to a feast worthy of an Emperor. We usually order at least 4 dishes to share between 3-4 people. The service is top notch and they do their best to make sure you have an enjoyable experience. We met the chef one night and she was an absolute pleasure. The place is decorated nicely and the seating is comfortable. Some tables even have a lazy susan for large groups so everyone can access the different dishes. Try as much as you can! It's all good! Definitely our favorite spot for authentic Chinese cuisine. And note, not American Chinese, but actual Chinese cuisine. And that's worth the trip in itself. The decor looks like a 70s diner met a fancy Chinese dining room, but that doesn't matter because the food is good. You sit down and are met with little dishes (I mean pinch bowl size) of complimentary sweet pickled daikon and boiled peanuts. (My Thai-Chinese mom would've loved this.) They have a very picturesque menu, and I include pictures of that here. From what we ordered, they had authentic recipes and flavors. It was enjoyable. We had the salt & white pepper crispy chicken. If you've ever had Taiwanese popcorn chicken with the pieces of crispy fried Thai ("horapah") basil thrown in; that's exactly what this is. It's a favorite for my boys (who grew up with these accompanying boba drinks at some tea houses in Southern California), and they make a pretty good version here. I didn't find it as salty as I've had at other places, but hey, maybe that's a good thing. We ordered shumai, which wasn't our favorite. Coming from an Asian family, I've had my fair share of shumai. This is supposed to be Changsha or Hunan style, but they're small (which is okay for the style) and a bit lifeless (not okay for flavor). I guess I'm more of a fan of Cantonese style shumai. My mom would be the sort to say it's the sauce that completes it, and yes, the sauce makes it more pleasing (but more about their dipping sauce later). We ordered their handmade (what other kind is there?) xiaolongbao with chicken, as they were out of pork. For XLB, these were pretty good. (They weren't the blow-your-mind best that I've had but they weren't the worst. They were definitely in the middle.) For my 12-yr-old, Shanghai soup dumplings are one of his favorite Chinese dishes, and for him, the traditional Shanghai dipping sauce of Chinkiang vinegar + sugar + thinly sliced ginger matchsticks COMPLETES the dish. And as they don't serve this traditional sauce with this dumpling, their dish wasn't doing it for him. However, as I said earlier, their dumpling is okay. They just use their 1 dipping sauce that they serve with everything; they seem to have this house, 1-sauce-does-it-all dipping sauce. (I've been to some Chinese restaurants, particularly in CT, that have this 1 sauce for all, but I've been to other Chinese restaurants -- like in LA & NYC -- where they serve specific sauces that are usually paired with certain dishes.) The scallion pancakes were nicely crisp and flakey. The kids seemed good with the pan-fried dumplings. We enjoyed the dan dan noodles, cumin chicken, and surprisingly found the steamed cabbage with glass noodles & garlic particularly flavorful. There are so many more dishes for us to try, but we'll have to try next time! NOTE: Get a load of the stinky tofu, fish head, or dishes with whole fish! That is truly authentic. Also, a majority of the patrons were Asian families while we were there. That says something! That usually tells me this is where I gotta eat! read more
