    hot and sour soup

"But you tease, and you flirt And you shine all the buttons on your green shirt" (Elvis Costello) We had a very interesting lunch visit to Green Tea on Sunday. It was so interesting that I'm breaking down this review into things that went well and things that have improvement opportunities. What Went Well 1) Complimentary Duck Sauce and wide noodles -you don't see these much any more, and they were addictively good. 2) They have weekend Lunch Specials! In fact they have 28 of them and all are around $10. Five of the 28 are Thai dishes. All lunch specials include a choice of rices and a soup. 3) The food was fantastic! My Hot and Sour soup (even though meatless) was about as jam packed with veggies and egg threads and tofu as any I've had. Very nicely spiced. Simply put, I loved it. My Thai Massaman Curry with Beef was also fantastic. The beef slices were so tender and delicious, the curry sauce was amazing, the vegetables (beans, corn, broccoli, red pepper and some pineapple) were great, and even the brown rice was perfect. What Has Room For Improvement 1) Our dining room experience was marred by how noisy the handful of bar patrons and staff were. The dining room and bar areas are one big open space, only separated by Covid partitions, so the loud yapping from about 20 feet away came rolling over the partitions right at us. We heard non stop chatter from one loud patron talking about driving, her daughter's driver ed, her encounter with a police officer for a speeding violation, and on and on ad nauseum. The chatter included some of the Green Tea staff who apparently didn't think they had other responsibilites, such as clearing off a vacated table, taking our order ("sorry, I didn't know you were there"), or bringing our food out in a timely manner, because 2) Our lunch came out warm, not hot. No doubt it was sitting in the kitchen slowly coming to room temperature while our server was occupied elsewhere. 3) General communication between the host, server and kitchen was poor. We were seated and given menus by the host right away, but he apparently never told our server we were there, and she never peeked into the dining room until I gave her the fish-eyed stare in a gap between the Covid partitions. And then there was the temperature of the food..... So although the food was fantastic, the experience was not. The food saved this from being a 3 star review

I've driven past Green Tea for years, and finally got an opportunity to try it for myself. The outside is a little bland, and I'm not 100% sure they don't have two entrances. The one facing the road will get you fastest to the hostess stand though. It looks like they may have seasonal outdoor seating in the back of the parking lot, but don't hold me to that. The interior dining room is a mix of tables and booths, with enough space where you don't feel like you're on top of another party. It's very subtly decorated, the tables are very crisp and clean. They are a Coke establishment, and also have a big bar available. There were complimentary crisps and sauce provided before the meal. The menu is big, but has so many tasty sounding options! I ultimately tried the Crispy Mayo Shrimp, not 100% knowing what to expect. Maybe not bright orange, but it was delicious! The shrimp were plentiful and well cooked, and the sauce was savory with the walnuts giving a sweet bite. I can't wait to order it again. The restroom is a bit of an adventure, going to the back of the hallway and left. Getting out and turning left is even more so, because there's a pretty consistent line of traffic coming both ways!

The drunken noodles had real flavor and actual spice--thank you for not watering it down! You can tell they stayed true to the dish, and I appreciated that. The duck roll was good overall. I've been wanting to try The Elephant Trail for at least four years now…read more So today, after running some errands in Simsbury and Canton, I pulled in for lunch. I was greeted warmly, and my neighbor and I were seated in a lovely booth by the window. Iced water was poured into the glasses that were sitting on the table, and lunch menus were placed in front of us No munchies or sauce were served while I was perusing the menu I placed my order for an order of chicken wings for the appetizer, and for $16.95, I ordered chicken and garlic sauce with white rice, along with hot and spicy soup and two small egg rolls My neighbor ordered a shrimp and Thai sauce lunch. Within five minutes, the chicken wings arrived 8 in total, which included 4 flats and 4 drumettes These chicken wings were seasoned perfectly, and then deep-fried to a golden brown. A beautiful spicy Thai sauce was served on the side. I could've made a meal out of these. These were some of the best chicken wings I've ever had in my 65 years here on earth. The Tom Young soup arrived, and it wasn't what I was expecting, boy was this thing sour and as soon as I hate it, I went whoa, the waitress saw that I didn't like it and offered to exchange it for Mayo soup which I gladly did. The miso soup was delicious seasoning so nicely with basil. So far, I am experiencing perfection. The dinners arrived, and buy garlic, chicken and vegetables with white rice was OK. It wasn't great, but don't get me wrong. It wasn't bad at all. I would've liked to see more garlic sauce, and maybe a little bit more spicy. Instead, it was rather bland. My neighbor loved the Thai shrimp and vegetable vegetables Restrooms were clean, and I loved the ambience, Thai casual. The total with the tip was just over $54. I am really on the fence if this is the best Thai in Connecticut or close to it. So far no. But I would gladly come here again because this would be a top five in the Avon Valley area. I love the experience, and our server gave us extraordinary service. This was a great experience. I just wish the main course was a little bit more seasoned. I will come here in the future and try a different dish

But what impressed me was the genuine friendliness of the owners. Dirk is always welcoming, and makes sure the customers are happy. I dont think I've ever met his wife, as she's always so hard at work in the kitchen. Even on mothers day she works nonstop to keep up with demand. (Business is booming now, thankfully!) They value their employees and occasionally close to celebrate them, and sometimes to attend their childrens' school events, which i think is great. When you enter, you walk through a boba tea and sweets area before turning the corner into the restaurant seating, which was a bit unexpected but interesting. When I arrived, I was asked to wait briefly for a group to leave before being seated since the space is very small and there wasn't enough room to pass. Once they moved, I was seated right away, which I appreciated. There were a few cleanliness and service issues that took away from the experience. The table hadn't been fully cleaned and still had spilled flower water on it, with napkins on the floor underneath. We also didn't have napkins or silverware at the table initially, so I grabbed napkins from the other side of the restaurant to wipe the table. I did mention this to the staff, but the table wasn't addressed afterward. The food was okay and had flavor, though it was fairly simple and became repetitive after a few bites. Service overall felt a bit slow, and we waited for a while before someone helped us check out. Overall, the experience was just okay. The garlic sauce.... Let's call this jarlic and water, which was so bland, this dish seemed like a dietetic dish! No kick at all! The jasmine rice was bland until I put the remaining chile sauce on it. The tofu was well flavoured and moist. The noodles themselves were a bit bland and needed more of a kick (something that one could accomplish with the Sriracha on the table). The eggplant dish was full of veggies, which I appreciated greatly, but was overly oily and underflavored. The rice that came with the stir fry was perfectly cooked. The ambiance was lovely, replete with "lush" vegetation and some bamboo ornaments. The restroom was also clean and well-maintained, sadly uncommon in this part of New England. Service was good.
