Takeout Review: I've read good reviews and drive by this place all the time; I always say to myself, "I've got to try that place out." We finally ordered some takeout there recently. Ordering was easy, just a simple call; pickup was also quick and easy. The parking lot was spacious and so was the restaurant. I saw people dining in there. There was a fish tank and the person that helped me was friendly. Prices and portions were comparable to other Chinese spots. I ordered the orange chicken combo with fried rice, crab rangoons, plain lo mein for my toddlers, and my husband had the general tso combo. The crab rangoons were A+++ definitely up there with the best I've had; thin fried wonton wrapper and a larger amount of creamy, cheesey, imitation crab filling. Arrived on this Friday for takeout Private parking was a breeze. The restaurant was moderately busy during this lunchtime, with two waitresses taking care of the tables I ordered takeout for three of us, one order consisted of edame and a steamed chicken extra spicy with white rice, the other order was crab Rangoon and a vegetable fried rice. I chose the egg foo young lunch special. Both of my lunch guests were very happy with their meals, including raving about the crab Rangoon. My egg foo yung was just OK. The reasoning was it seemed like it was deep-fried in old oil that tasted a little burnt. The egg foo yung was very watery. As noticed on the bottom of the takeout container. The white rice was on point. The gravy provided was extremely watery. Overall, I would score the egg foo yung a 3.7 out of 10. The price for the three takeout meals was $36 and change. I thought this was a pretty good deal. Next time I come back, I won't be ordering the egg foo yung. I will try something else. Overall, if you're in the area, and need a quick lunch, this would be a decent choice. read more

We haven't eaten at Tan Wong in years but as I wanted Peking duck, we came back. We started with appetizers of spring rolls, fried dumplings, and crab rangoons. All were perfectly cooked, hot and delicious! The Peking duck was worth the trip. Crispy skin, moist delicious dark duck meat, scallions and plum sauce wrapped in a thin pancake. I live in California and every time we go to the east coast we make it a point to drive to Tan Wong. Yes we drive 2.5-3 hours sometimes just for the food! It's that great! Their lunch portions are big. We usually get the shrimp lo mein and pork fried rice. It's like nothing we've tried anywhere else in California! Make sure to get the delicious HUGE egg rolls! They crunchy but not too crunchy. You also get a soup ( we love the egg drop soup) and a crunchy snack. Don't forget the chili oil! It's the best we've ever had! We had to buy some to-go and brought it back to California! 10/10 food! We also recently tried their boba and it's delicious. Don't be fooled by the fact that there's not that many people inside. They mainly have take out orders but we prefer a sit down dining experience. Staff is super friendly and welcoming. Bathrooms are clean as well as the restaurant. Definitely stop by! My family has been getting take out from this place for the last 15+ years, and let me tell you that the food never disappoints. I love every dish we have gotten from here, the service is amazing when you eat in and they are very friendly when you come to pick up your order. My go to is usually the Singapore Mei fun and some panfried dumplings, but I highly encourage this place as your new go to for Chinese food. Staff is super friendly and I really enjoy the 2-style spicy lamb, the awesome egg rolls, chicken and broccoli, and house chili sauce. Quick, affordable, and plenty of space to eat indoors also! We love Tan Wong. Anytime we can't figure out what to make for dinner this is our go-to. It's close to our house and they have delicious food and service. It's never more than 20 minutes on a to go order and the order is always correct. Clean facility, nice people , fast , lunch serving size just right. The atmosphere is much better than your average middle ground Chinese restaurant. That accounts for a lot of my 4 star. This is an American Chinese restaurant with all the usual dishes. Don't expect any real challenges. I ordered the ma la shredded pork and steamed rice. I got fried rice instead but I decided to try it. This was OK but I really don't like fried rice so I am not considering it my review . The included cup of wonton soup was excellent . The wontons were actual little steamed buns with a decent amount of pork filling . I like the light texture as opposed to the usually heavy wonton which in most take out Chinese are heavy leaden pieces of dough. These were not. The broth was very good. Wonton soup gets 5 stars. I will say the pork dish was good, it wasn't what I have come to expect for ma la however. It's a Sichuan dish and I think the translation roughly means swimming in peppers. Conventionally these would be small red chilies . And a lot of them. No chilies in this dish. There were nice tender pieces of pork, a lot of peppers green and red, some summer squash and yellow onion . So it was swimming in peppers, just the wrong kind . The sauce was well made with a consistency I would find in a fine restaurant. I believe I detected five spice and some Sichuan pepper ( the slightly numbness on your tongue) in the sauce. Way to much onion. I have three Chinese cookbooks. Onion are only used as a veggie in handful of recipes . They seem to ubiquitous in most Chinese restaurants . That being said the vegetables were carefully cut to equal sizes so the stir-fried evenly. The end result ? Well prepared food . The pork dish was really quite good but I would call it stir fried pork with bell peppers and onion in a mild Sichuan sauce . I give the pork dish get 4 stars if I evaluate it as a simple stir fried pork dish . As a ma la dish it fails completely . If what it actually was and it would sounds good to you then it's worth orderingThe wonton soup is excellent. 2020 and COVID-19. I will continue to give them 4 stars because of the service and solid COVID-19 steps. My order was taken promptly and cheerfully with the option to pay at time of order . My order was ready when promised and accurate . Pickup is at table in the foyer . Sign the slip and take your bag(s) . No human contact. Hand sanitizer provided . Masks required in the foyer. The dining room is closed . The food is the food . Yes this better than your average take out places but it really doesn't hold a candle to the better Asian restaurants in the Farmington Valley. The moo-shu pork was very good. Good depth of flavor and well prepared . The pancakes were a little thick (more like a corn tortilla in thickness) . The serving size will make two meals for my wife. I had a spring roll which was likely out of the freezer but it was fried properly , crisp , not all greasy and the filling was light and tasty. I had the shrimp and black been sauce. It probably should have been called stir-fried yellow onion with vegetables and shrimp. The shrimp we're good sized, tender and cooked nicely as were the other ingredients . Tan Wong has the same problem as other takeouts. They load up on yellow onion which changes the flavor of the dish and tend to over power the rest of the dish. After I was done with the shrimp, bell peppers and zucchini , the onions occupied about 1/3 of the container . They went to the trash can . I could have used a little more fermented black beans in the sauce . While this is not a spicy dish it should have a little punch . It want bad just not great . Three and half stars based on the quality of the shrimp. The rice was ok. I prefer slight sticky medium or short grain rice with Chinese but this acceptable read more

Honestly I'm generally not a fan of Americanized Chinese food takeout places. Tan Wong is super close to my house but when my housemate began ordering it occasionally I was skeptical. Turned out the food was pretty tasty and not many of the things that I didn't like about Chinese joints here in the US. The dishes aren't overly greasy/oily and they taste like real food (if you know what I mean). Christmas Eve fiasco they lied about wait times for take out and table service! Many customers prepaid and had to wait for their take order and were repeatedly lied to about their wait time. I was told my take out would be ready at 6:15 I didn't get it until 8:45! I wanted to leave but they wouldn't credit my card! And repeatedly said just 15 more minutes numerous times. Many people left and also customers table wait times were over 50 minutes!after waiting they just left. One customer knocked over the tip jar and stormed out. My husband and I recently moved to Simsbury and have made Tan Wong our go-to Chinese restaurant. They are always very nice when I call in an order...super friendly and courteous. Recently we wanted to order but they were closed (I think they're generally closed on Tuesdays?) so we ordered from another Chinese restaurant nearby (hint: the restaurant name has a # in it). Eating from the other restaurant made me appreciate Tan Wong even more because the food at the other place wasn't as good and was a good bit more expensive. We are from Avon, but we didn't like any of the local Chinese restaurants. For many years we ordered from a place on rt4 in Farmington but they have gotten bad. Well, today I truly enjoyed my food again, my broccoli in garlic sauce was very tasty, hubby had General Tsao's chicken and said it was good. The food here is sooo good! My local Chinese take out closed down overnight and I've been without for too long! We got the lo mein and it had that wonderful smoky taste that they call "the smoke of the wok". The fried rice was flavorful, not just soy sauce coated, but diverse.
