I remember going to the original Atlantic Bar and Grill ten (yes, ten) years ago and thinking it was awful. Chef Mike had amazing press when this place opened two years ago. And it shows by the two - yes, TWO - hour wait for your meal. Last night, this place was swamped, but rightfully so - it's one of the only places in the area where you can dine on haute cuisine. They wouldn't accept a reservation for three people, either, but several people had reservations, so I suggest calling before you go.
We did wait for the two hours, thinking it would fly by - it did not. They'll happily serve you drinks at the bar, and you can walk on the beach or sit in one of the waiting areas until they page you. The location is ideal, as it is right on the beach and in front of the ocean.
Now, after waiting for two hours, one would hope the meal would be worth it. Glancing at the menu, it's on the small side but not measly. There's (overpriced, but tasty looking) tapas, appetizers, a large selection of fish and a smaller selection of meat and poultry. You'll notice the menu changes more often than not - a clue that they're truly using the freshest and most sustainable ingredients. However, if you're a person who likes to choose from a variety of options, you'll find the menu stifled a bit. They offer only one chicken dish, only one salmon dish, etc. Again, this isn't a bad thing - it means the chefs can focus on making the one represented dish as best as it can be, instead of spreading themselves too thin. This is a sign of a quality restaurant.
Last night, the place was so swamped they didn't even have the right cutlery on the table. Everyone - from people sitting down to people walking in - was complaining about the obnoxious wait time.
A huge shout-out to Alison, our server, who was extremely pleasant, accommodating, and efficient throughout our entire dinner.
Since we were ready to chew our arms off when we sat down, so we immediately ordered an appetizer - the fried calamari - which came out within ten minutes.
The calamari, while it could have been hotter, was rather tasty. It was perfectly crispy and tossed in a thai-style chili glaze. They glaze was good, but it didn't taste like it was from scratch.
Before I talk about the entrees, keep in mind you'll be spending at least 40-60 dollars per person - that's including dinner, drinks, and appetizers. I'm happy to say that all entrees come with bread and soup or salad. The house salad is mescalin greens dressed in a lemony dressing with shaved aged Parmesan - very tasty!
For the entree, I ordered the crabcakes. Two crabcakes dressed in a chili mayo-based sauce come atop a bed of garden rice with broiled asparagus. The portions aren't huge, but they're enough to satisfy you. The crabcakes, in particular, are truly all lump crab meat with very little filler, so I could only finish one. The asparagus were simply but deliciously prepared, while the rice was no big shakes. (I ordered a side of buttermilk mashed potatoes with my meal, with were quite tasty).
Did the meal justify the two hour wait time? Our food was very good, but I don't think I'll wait another two hours just to eat here. It's nice for a special occasion, but it's also expensive. There are other (cheaper) eateries around this area that offer great food without the pricey tag. read more
