Updating my review for TAKE OUT only. My bf and I got two orders of the large signature pho and the banh mi for dinner. I feel like the pho broth tastes a little different every time I come here. It wasn't how we remembered. I also wish they used a different type of take out bowl for their pho. Something that is a little deeper so it would be easier to mix the noodles and "loosen" them up in the soup. When you do take out, the noodles get stuck together since they're just sitting in the container. Banh mi was still good. Bread was crispy even though we ate it after we finished our pho. read more

House Special Vietnamese Sandwich (BBQ pork, pork belly, Vietnamese ham, pate) - The baguette is ok, not enough content. Spring Rolls - The best appetizer! I came here to get a banh mi chicken sandwich during lunch. I'm not an expert on banh mi but this is the second time having it and both times the sandwich was really dry. The bread was a bit stale to the point where the bread was too crumbly. The restaurant is usually busy whenever I go in so I'm sure there are other dishes that may be more popular. I personally don't think I'd go back for that sandwich in addition to the fact that parking is limited in that area. read more

I tried this new spot a few days ago. I haven't been to this section of Auburndale in a very long time but seeing their was a new pho place open i had to try it. They have a tent set up outside and it houses 2 2 tops and 1 four top. They were comfortably spaced out to follow social distancing rules. The restaurant opened 2 months ago. They did a nice job decorating the outside with flowers, there was even a bee trying to pollinate one of them and tried eating my food. The water quickly took care of the bee since he saw it was bothering me. The waitstaff here was very courteous and it looks like the restaurant is mostly family run. Now to the food I ordered the large chicken pho for $13. I actually really enjoyed this, the soup had a lot of depth of flavor and the chicken and noodles were perfectly cooked. This will definitely be a place I will go back to for sure. I also got a bank mi that I took home for dinner. I got the lemongrass chicken one, I really enjoyed it, especially the veggies on it, one thing I would've changed was toating the baguette and it was a bit pricey but definitely big at $11. The restaurants ceedit card machine unfortunately broke that day but they were so kind to take a Zelle payment from me since I didnt have enough cash on hand. I recently journeyed to Auburndale to try this Vietnamese restaurant which I would have never known, if not for Yelp! Lol. This place serves a hot noodle soup with bean sprouts, beef balls, sliced beef, and basil (pho), sandwiches of sliced meats (banh mi) and also some rice dishes with grilled pork chops and other meats. I was agonizing between the banh mi and the pho. After much ado, I decided on the signature pho. It was pretty good, and the portion size was perfect. I really enjoyed it. It came with fresh ingredients, which you can see in my photographs. The broth was light but not too heavy. It had a simple, refreshing taste. The meat in the noodle soup was cooked nicely and not served raw as in other restaurants. I also checked in, so I was able to have a free Thai iced tea. I found this tea super strong and not too sweet. I recommend you get it. Yum! The best thing about this place is it has some tables for outdoor dining so one can breathe in the fresh air and enjoy a meal al fresco. I noticed other patrons ordering take out, if you rather take the meal to go. Another awesome part of this visit is the customer service. It was excellent. The waiters were approachable, friendly, and helpful. They attentively refilled our water and also checked to see if I liked my meal. I can't wait to come back again and try their banh mi sandwiches or grilled pork with rice. I consider myself fortunate to be able to eat such a great meal in spite of times. We came here for lunch, and we got an order of crispy wings, a bun bo hue(mild), a house special sandwich, Thai ice tea and a lychee Thai tea. The wings were crispy, and the sauce was good, but there was way too much batter on them for our liking. The bun bo hue was super spicy when we only asked for mild, so keep in mind if ordering it that you should order a level below what you want. The house special sandwich was good and had a good amount of meat on it. The two ice teas also tasted good and were nice and cold. Unfortunately, I have not had the same awesome experience with Chef Papa since I last wrote about it. I've eaten from them two more times, one dine-in and one take-out, and noticed a decline in quality of the food. Also, every time I've dined in, I realize that the same waitress takes our order and she is not very pleasant - just comes up when she is ready to take our order, and silently collects menus and walks away without speaking a word after we're done. A word of acknowledgement or some kind of hospitality when we interacted with her would be nice. I ordered pho both times after my great first experience, but both times seemed like they were just not delivering in the same way. For my dine-in, the broth was a light in flavor and nothing special. And for the take-out, not only did they omit cilantros, but the broth just tasted like meat broth! I did try their crispy squid appetizer which was good and well-portioned. I am a little hesitant to not just default to a different restaurant next time that I'm craving pho, but am open to trying Chef papa again. Hopefully they can get more consistent. read more

Easily one of the best pho and vietnamese restaurants in queens. Had the signature pho, grilled pork vermicelli with spring rolls, and I loved both of them. Their outdoor tent is also nicely done and socially distanced. It's a nice touch that they also sell soju wine and beer. Nice mom and pop Viet spot on Northern Blvd. The service is exceptional. We ordered spring rolls, the house special viet sandwich and their signature pho. The flavors are very different here in terms of pho broth and viet sandwich. I may have came on an off day, but their meat was over cooked by the time it came to me, and their banh mi pork was overly salted. I'm used to the pho beef coming raw and is cooked by the super hot broth so maybe just an off day. read more

TLDR; great appetizers (get the crispy spring rolls!), cozy interior and classic Vietnamese dishes. I came here for lunch on a Saturday afternoon and thankfully got seated before the busier lunch hour. They have a couple of tables inside so I didn't see anyone having to wait to get seated but the food is delicious so I can see how they might fill up in the future! We ordered several appetizers to share among us and I decided to go with the bun bo hue for my main with a side of bone marrow. - Spring rolls: delicious! I highly recommend getting this. It was one of the best appetizers. There were 4 spring rolls cut in half so 8 pieces total so great for sharing. I feel like the spring rolls are thicker than traditional places but in a good sense. The outer layer was so crispy and fried to perfection while the filling was flavorful and juicy. - Fried salt and pepper squid: I saw pictures of this item so I was intrigued and it's definitely different than other fried calamari dishes. The texture was great but the flavor (for this batch at least) just wasn't there. The batter was very light and airy yet crispy but I wish the squid itself was a bit bigger to provide some more substance. There was no salt or pepper so it tasted pretty bland and the bottom had a pool of oil. - Vietnamese pancake: I've always wanted to try this and they make a great one here! There were lots of flavors and textures going on but it was delicious - all the way to the filling! It's a messy appetizer for sure. - Summer rolls: light and refreshing, paired with the peanut sauce - can't go wrong with this classic Vietnamese appetizer! - Bun Bo Hue: I was disappointed with this. The broth was alright, not very spicy. There was a small piece of pig feet in mine with just a few pieces of brisket and ham. I think it could've used more ingredients. At least the noodles were perfectly cooked. The bone marrow ($5) was a pretty sizeable piece that had a lot of marrow in it. Overall, a great place to check out for Vietnamese food! I enjoyed their appetizers and actually wanted to order all of them so I'll be back to try the others. I didn't eat the signature pho but I heard it was tasty and had a decent amount of toppings. Went to this place at around 3 PM on a Saturday. Thinking it would be empty around this time, it was surprisingly half full. We were seated immediately. We ordered the BBQ Pork Vermicelli and the Bun Bo Hue. I'm giving this review 4 stars based off the BBQ Pork Vermicelli and not the Bun Bo Hue. The vermicelli is a very healthy option which consists of vermicelli, salad, your choice of meat, and I believe the pink meat is minced pork. The dish also comes with the classic side of vietnamese dipping sauce. I also added pork spring rolls to my vermicelli for an extra $5. The spring rolls were heavily fried but also extremely crispy. If you want a healthier option, I wouldn't order these. Otherwise, definitely indulge. Everything in the vermicelli dish was very fresh. There was a nice balance of every ingredient. If you're looking for something healthy or if you like vermicelli at other Vietnamese restaurants, I'd highly recommend this. The Bun Bo Hue looked really good in other reviews and we wanted to try it because we've had really good Bun Bo Hue's elsewhere. But the dish we were served did not look like what we were expecting (as you can see). It wasn't as spicy as it should be and it also could have used a lot more flavor. If the dish is like this all the time, I probably wouldn't recommend it. But maybe today was just an off day for the chef. I'd like to try the same ones that I've seen in other reviews. Overall, I liked this place (aside from the Bun Bo Hue) and I would come here to try other dishes. read more

Been here a couple times for takeout but finally sat in for a meal the other day to fulfill my pho cravings. I got a small signature pho and my friend got a vermicelli bowl. Their portions are huge! As a soup lover, I appreciate that they give a lot of soup. However, the broth was just ok - it definitely needs the sauces to up the flavors. My friend got a large sized pho, which he easily finished. It didn't seem THAT much bigger than the regular size, possibly just a little more noodles and a lot more soup. Other things I've tried are the crispy summer roll + vermicelli bowl and the Vietnamese pancake, both which I strongly recommend! I've had the banh mi, which in my opinion is skippable here. Nevertheless, the restaurant seems clean and the service is always very quick. There aren't many authentic tasting pho restaurants on this side of queens, so definitely worth stopping by! read more

This place is a bit more expensive than other pho places on main st ie pho best. The noodle looks depressing when it came out. No color. Asked for the signature which should have brisket, tendon and beef balls but there wasn't a piece of tendon to be found in the bowl. Two star cus server was nice and was willing to get me a new bowl and the yuzu soda was nice too. They came back from the kitchen and gave me ONE piece of tendon. Still left a 25% tip. But may not return again because there are better options out there. *edit: changed to one star because the owner feels like he gotta be the bigger man in this situation. No color means the bowl of noodles looked really sad. Dull. Plain. Somber. Boring. Period. Saddest bowl of noodles I've seen and ate. I was pushed for time so I ate it as is. read more
