Ordered a same-day party tray and they were able to accommodate us! The calamari is soooo delicious! Ordered an XL tray for about $120 because the large isn't enough. Not sure if it's certain people or if the service has come a long way, but I did get a pleasant gentleman who helped over the phone and another in person. The best fried calamari in town! Ordered some party trays for my baby shower and the fried calamari and honey walnut shrimp were really delicious! The walnut shrimp was so flavorful and you actually taste the shrimp and not too breaded like other restaurants and just a tiny shrimp inside. I recommend for party bc decent prices. My go-to spot for Chinese food! The plate portions are very big and worth the $10 for a combo plate! The owners and workers in the store are always in a good attitude, super kind, and friendly every time I go! I always go with my usual of a Combination Plate #4 of Orange chicken and Fried Rice with an Egg Roll! Super delicious and so fulfilling! Why oh why are there not more places like Chef P's? Everything now days is a chain with boring bland tastes and menus. Chef P's is a nice throwback to my youth of when everyplace had a unique taste. I only started going a few years back and have been in love since. Good prices on combos and they will let you sub items no silly rules that don't make sense here. The service is always very good. I decided to order an XL walnut shrimp along with my other trays. Everything is covered in Saran Wrap and a brown paper bag when you pick up. I didn't rip off any of the paper bags. XL trays are supposed to serve 35-40 people, but when I set up the table I noticed that they skimped out on the walnut shrimp :( I paid $100+ tax for mostly lettuce. The XL tray served 15-20 people at most and they only got 3 pcs on average so I basically got screwed over and paid more than $1 per shrimp. Also, they were 30 minutes late on my order even though I had placed it 2 days in advance just as they had advised me to do so. Unfortunately I had to find out on my own since they didn't even call me to tell me that they were running late. Welp. My hunt for Chinese in San Jose has ended. Meaning I've given up. Pro: The only one is the portion size. It's obscene. Easily feed 3 hungry people. Cons: - prices were a bit high. 8 potstickers for $7 is a bit much. And the dinners don't include rice. - waited 30 mins for my food while people who were eating inside were served. People that came farrrr after me. - cash only. Wth? - place seemed very unsafe to me - small place. Easily missed. - somehow the beef garlic. Turned into FRIED beef. Wth?!?! A have a major problem, with this place. If you use your credit card, before you pay and finalize your purchase....you must choose from the screen, the amount or percentage of tip for service. The lowest percentage is 15%. So, I had no choice. Even though I DID NOT get waiter/waitress service....I still have to tip, not knowing the outcome of my order. What if they gave me attitude? My family always enjoys their fried calamari here at every party that is held. When their place was located in a small little shack off of Alum Rock...it was always a hassle to drive to their location because it was off a busy street. Now they moved up a little to a much more convenient place. Prices for their catering service for all party trays are reasonable. You could never go wrong with anything on their menu. Plus, they try very hard to accommodate all of your orders because they're always busy so don't be surprised that they aren't as quick and attentive to you when you come there to order. Chef P's, good chinese cuisine in a location that has seen better days. It's one of those great places where you can place large party tray orders and your guests will compliment you and ask you, "Where'd you get this? It's really good." When you first enter you'll notice on every single wall is a picture of everything on the menu. Not much chinese decor around, which I don't think they really care about except for a little idol of a Chinese emperor. Yeah... it all looks good, but there's only one thing that I come here for and that's the salt & peppered calamari. Today I'm going there with my brother in law. Knowing it might take a while for my order to be finished I call ahead of time so they can prepare it. I'll soon later find it won't help, but we will get to that later. I'm placing 5 orders of the salt & peppered calamari. That calamari is so good that I'm getting 3 orders for my household and 2 more orders for some friends. As I get there a short line is being formed. Only one person is working behind the counter, which isn't a problem for me, but when she has to answer the phone and place orders as well this might take some time. So I finally get my turn to get my order I place maybe 30 minutes before and I find out my order gets never placed. No worries because I'm not in a big rush, but the other people behind me are getting restless. I'm also placing an order of the salt & peppered fish fillet at the last second because the picture on the wall looks damn good. I feel kind of sorry for her because she's doing all the work with maybe one person helping, but he's busy bringing orders to the front and half-ass cleaning tables. Now I just have to wait for my order to come out. The people in line are complaining because the line is moving slowly. Good thing I got there earlier before the line went out the door. I step out for a second and there's a Carl's Jr. next door. My brother in law goes over and eats there. Before you know it he comes back before the order is done. Finally the order is complete and we take it to go. The smell is aromatic and I just want to eat it right now, but I 'm waiting to eat it at home. As I finally take that first bite it's just too good like a pork rind, but with consistency of jerky in the end. Wouldn't you know it... it's still crispy too after an hour, but will still be crispy in a few days. Good stuff. The fish I bet would have tasted better fresh after cooking. Not impressed. No parking, overpriced and dirty! I ordered he orange chicken combo (Lunch special @ $7.) Although I have had better, it was only ok. At least it did not smell bad as others have described. I do have to agree with other reviewers, rude staff, poor service and overall dirty. Upon arrival, staff was sitting at the counter and seemed put out that my group wished to order. After a few minutes they stopped eating and rudely took my order. Then we had to find a table, a clean table. It was 3 pm and 3/4 of the tables had dirty plates piled high. They had obviously been there for some time. I love this palce because of their salt and pepper calamari but I also love it because evrytime I try something different I tend to like it too. I also had the Honey walnut prawns here and that's good. The restaurant looks like sh*t from the outside but on the inside it's clean. They also have some LCD TVs in there. I usually order over the phone and pick it up, I suggest you do the same. This place is perfect for those times when you just need something to eat and don't know where to go. Got a a to-go with a call on and was ready in about 20 minutes just as they said it would be and wow the portions are HUGE. Beef chow-fun: Massive massive portion, spiced well (not too salty) with that nice wok fried taste you only get when the flames are about 5 inches high. Just the way its suppose to be! Salt and pepper calamari: Okay so this is what everyone hypes the restraunt about but honestly it was OK. She asked if i wanted crispy or not and noting the reviews asked for crispy but when receiving the actual food it was so fried that it reminded me of pork rinds more than calamari. The pieces were so fried that the meat was so dehydrated you mind as well eat fishy fried batter. That being said it was again a huge portion. Next time i'll try no crispy. To my surprise, the open sign was lit. There were a bunch of people waiting around for their order and I could overhear so many side conversations about how ridiculous their service is. When the lady asked me what I wanted, I go on to order and she stops me and says, "sorry. We're not taking orders anymore." EXCUSE ME? I told her I have been trying nonstop but no one is answering the phone. Again, she proceeds to tell me how busy they have been. I ask if i can just make an order, even if I have a wait a little. She said it'll take TWO HOURS. Are. You. Kidding. Me. For some chow mein and beef broccoli (NOT EVEN PARTY SIZE). Regardless of how busy you are, you are still a business and should at least have someone answer the phone. Or at least turn off your damn sign saying you're open, because you're basically not. I understand it's New Year's Eve, but if all of these orders were pre orders, you should already expect the volume of business you'll be getting, considering it's a holiday and you claim you're open for business. What kind of business is this? Definitely not a business I will continue to support. I don't care how "good" your food is, I'll take my loyalty and money to a place that deserves it. I work down the street, so we love ordering here for our office. Jennifer who works the front is awesome. She's always very friendly, quick and checks everything. She's always very thorough, which is so refreshing! My office manager has dietary restrictions and always has to have her order right or she would not be able to eat it. But more importantly it was so bad I couldn't eat it. The salt and pepper calamari were practically thick potato chips. So dry, oily and flavorless, you couldn't even tell if it was calamari. Have been coming to this restaurant for years. This is the best Chinese food around. I frequent so much the owner makes me a Hunan Chow Mein that is extremely spicy. Ask for it next time you visit here. It's incredible Also check out the calamari and salt and pepper ribs. Great food! read more
