I finally got to try this place out. I came here yesterday late afternoon with my wife, and we had a really good time. Let me remind you, this is a hole-in-the-wall type Chinese restaurant. Expect what comes with that: Slightly rude employees that aren't enthusiastic, smell of cigarette smoke, quiet restaurant; no music. There were a bunch of older men just lounging around, some eating and some just there to have conversation. At times, it was awkward because whenever I needed a refill or ask for to-go boxes, all the guys would just look at me. Oh yes, please bring CASH because they do not accept debit/credit. They have an ATM machine in the restaurant so be aware of this. We ordered a good spread: Roast Duck, Spicy & Salted Pork Chops, Honey Walnut Shrimp, and House Fried Rice. The duck was really good but it was cold which was bit of a turn-off; I wish it was served hot. I love that the pork chops were actually chops! It was seasoned well and had a nice amount of meat on them. I do wish it was salt & pepper style but this will do. The honey walnut shrimp was crispy but I wasn't too big of a fan of their creamy mayo; it had a different taste that I wasn't used to. The shrimp pieces weren't glazed either so it was just ok. The fried rice was good but a bit too wet from either the runny egg or oil. There is a condiment table of sauces, so you just have to go up and get some sauce in the cups. The chopped jalapeno with vinegar is my favorite. I was disappointed with their chili oil because it had this cumin taste with other spices and that just threw me off. I was hoping the chili oil would be on point so I can eat lots of it with the pork chops but it wasn't. Overall, for a hole in the wall Chinese spot, this place is about a 4-4.5. I recently rediscovered this place again. I used to go here a lot a long time ago when I lived around this area. This restaurant hasn't changed a thing since I knew it. The only thing that changed were the prices. Even though prices went up, it's still pretty affordable for good casual food. It's nothing fancy, but the noodle soups are always good and comforting. They still take cash only at the restaurant, but they are on grubhub now so I've been ordering some dishes for take out. I have not been disappointed with anything I've tried here. It's supposed to be bbq pork, duck, soy sauce chicken. Over half of the meat is bbq pork. And the bbq pork is bright red, gross, and it's dry. There were only 4, 5 tiny pieces of duck in it. I don't know how long I've been eating here, but it's a no frills, hole-in-the-wall Chinese restaurant that has an extensive menu of decently priced and tasty food. My family and I's go-to order whenever we dine here include: Shrimp with Scramble Egg Over Rice (dried) - such a simple dish, yet so good. The pieces of shrimp are huge which is a plus too! Deep Fried Pork Chops - perfectly fried and tender pork BBQ Pork and Roast Pork - both are prepared well, tender, and have a nice ratio of meat/fat pieces. Serves authentic Chinese food reminiscent of San Francisco's Chinatown restaurants. Today's weather was cold and rainy that I wanted a healthy chicken dish. I ordered the chicken ginger and onion to go. The chicken was cut up into pieces and stir fried until it was lightly browned. There were a lot of green onions and ginger pieces that the aroma poured out when I opened the container. I dipped the chicken pieces into the oyster sauce to add some sweet flavor to it. I appreciate the variety in menu options and the food is so comforting for someone coming from a Chinese/Viet upbringing. SERVICE: The staff are always very friendly and hospitable towards customers' needs. They are really kind about receiving feedback. Although the interior of this restaurant isn't exactly modern, the staff make it feel like I'm eating at a friend's house. There was another customer who accidentally dropped a cup/dishware and one of the owners insisted she leave it for their staff to clean up safely. It's been a while since my family and I have stopped by Kim Tar BBQ. With us being in the area I made the decision to grab an item or two. Purchases for the evening: Salt & Pepper Calamari Seafood Chow Fun Food is made fresh so it did take a bit of time. The owner is courteous and although he isn't a man of many words, he may chat up a few words. Takeout packaging is sturdy and I had no issues getting the food home. The calamari is an absolute home run!! The pieces of squid is cut thick enough where you aren't crunching down on chips and there is a thin layer of crisp surrounding each tender piece. This is THE SPOT to order from when my calamari obsessed 4 year old is craving. The sweet and sour sauce is good, so good my daughter attempted to sip the container. FYI: If you are into something full of crunch, Kim Tar isn't the spot for you when it comes to this item. The seafood chow fun was okay. Not terrible but not something I'd request again. Upon opening up the container, I immediately knew the order was wrong. Not because of the restaurant but because we [the patrons] did not clarify one additional bit of detail. Ordering chow fun here will result in a plate of stir fry rice noodles and wet gravy smothered on top. If you prefer a dry stir fry like myself, make sure to let the staff know at the time of ordering. Flavors were a bit bland and soy sauce was needed but it was absolutely doable. 4/5 rating. This was my first time visiting with my boyfriends family. Their family has been coming since they were kids. We of course did family style and ordered steamed rice, egg flower soup, duck, fried fish, and Chinese broccoli with oyster sauce. I've been coming here with family since early 2000s when I was just visiting the Bay Area. When I finally moved to the Bay Area - this always been a go-to place. The Deep Fried Pork Chops is a must - very tasty and so soft that no knife is needed. Any of the noodles are great too, my preference has been the crispy noodles due to a childhood memory from another place. Decided to come here for a late Father's day celebration because my dad is obsessed with "wok hei." If you understand Cantonese or a similar dialect, you know what this means. In direct translation or to my best understanding, it means "breath of the wok." This takes skill to achieve and is typically achieved in stir fry's like in fried rice or fried noodles. It has been years since I last visited this place and all I remember was how delicious their house-made satay sauce is. It is SO GOOD. It is so flavorful and it has a nuttiness to it. It's delicious on everything. Their fried rice is incredible and mainly because it has that "wok hei" my dad is so fond of. It just takes a regular fried rice to the next level. We ordered the seafood fried rice and there's a variety of seafood in it such as fish, scallop, shrimp and fish even tempura. We also got a combination bbq plate with Hainan chicken, char siu (bbq roast pork) and duck. All three proteins were delicious and soft. Hainan chicken comes with the scallion and ginger oil, but also pairs well with their satay sauce! My parents loved the veggie dish we ordered. We got the ong choi (water spinach) with bean curd. The taro eggrolls we got were good too! It came with a sweet and sour sauce but I liked the satay with it more. It also came with pickled veggies! Lastly, we got the Singaporean style noodles per my mom's request. It was okay and I would have preferred a chow fun instead. I was so happy that my parents enjoyed this meal a lot. I have never seen them enjoy food this much when I take them out to eat. My dad even wanted to order more dishes to try and he never says anything like that. I enjoyed myself a lot too. This is definitely an old school Chinese restaurant especially with the deli in the front. It's nostalgic in the best way and I'm glad it's still around. The service is decent and what you would expect in a Chinese restaurant. Price point is pretty fair, I think. I'm not sure if they take card here, but I've always remembered it being CASH only. One of my favorite go-to, hole in the wall, mom & pop shop. They have a huge selection of entrees and sides - options ranging from rice, noodles, soup, veggie + more. They also have a hot deli at the front to order takeout or dine in - duck, chicken, pork and other protein options.. made fresh daily! My favorite dish would have to be the chow fun because they cook it where the flat wide noodles don't stick together and they use very little oil to stir fry it. I highly recommending the hot deli items like the roast duck or cha sew because their marination is on point. Also, if you dine in make sure to try out their pickled/vinegar jalapeños - yum!
