To start off, Chef Tang provides wonderful service! Also, don't forget to check in on Yelp to get 2 free spring rolls (or egg rolls if you will). Spicy seafood and tofu: The soup was spicy, but didn't have much flavor in the broth. It was basically boiled seafood with a spicy broth. The seafood included a few pieces of fish, scallops, and squid. There was also a few pieces of bok choy, bamboo shoots, and black fungus. I probably would not order this again, since this dish seemed pretty simple. Szechuan and Guangxi chili fish: Probably my favorite dish besides the spicy green beans. It had a perfect amount of spiciness and kick. If you want to up the spice a notch (or three, haha), take a bite out of the deep fried chili peppers! Mongolian beef: I was somewhat disappointed by how much onions there were in this dish. The beef was good because it was seasoned well, but an overwhelming amount of the dish (think 3/4 of the dish, maybe 2/3 at best) was comprised of sauteed onions and green onions. Sauteed onions are great for bringing out the flavor, but I wouldn't eat a bunch of it as if they were vegetables... Spicy green beans: This was a hit with my family. The garlic was cooked well, and there was plenty of flavor in this dish. I enjoyed that the green beans were cooked enough that it had a slightly firm texture. I would probably order this dish again! All of these dishes came with a side of rice, so you can still enjoy all of the dishes family style! What a nice find this was. Small family operated (I think) Chinese restaurant. Because of Covid, no dine in. But they run the take out well. I love watching my food being freshly wok cooked while I wait. I got Shrimp with Lobster Sauce, with Brown Rice. I just enjoyed it all, hot with fresh ingredients. I've been coming here for years and have enjoyed the taste and flavors of this quaint Vista jewel. Recently I ordered 5 entrees for take out. My favorite dish is normally the Beef Broccoli, but this time the beef was fatty and chewy and the sauce was bland and terrible tasting. The Shrimp pineapple curry was dry and flavorless, and the Vegetable Chow Mein was cold and barely had any vegetables. My total bill without a tip was $75!!! I have eaten food from here 3x now, and they have been consistently delivering flavorful food. From in-house service (dine-in experience) to take out, it has all been pleasant. The first time I tried this place was on a Saturday, for an early dinner with my good friend. We ordered a pork dish, spicy eggplant, garlic spinach and a chicken dish. My absolute favorite was the spinach, and I have ordered that everytime since. The spiciness of the food did not disappoint and was not so overpowering that you couldn't taste the different layers of flavors. I'm motivated to try every dish on the menu. It looks like we have good luck with restaurants named "Chef" something here in San Diego. This place reminds me of Chef Wong in Carmel Mountain, and the food is really good like theirs. I was eating by myself on my way to an appointment, and this wasn't too far out of the way. I had heard really goid things from some of my friends, so I made the trip. I'm glad I did. I had the Sesame Chicken lunch special, which came with egg drop soup and a small spring roll. The soup was very good, with tons of egg. The spring roll was very good too. I had my entree with brown rice, and there was tons of it. The chicken was good, fried like the usual orange chicken style, but with a dark red almost Asian mole kind of sauce. Definitely one of my go to spot, when I'm in North County. Is it the best Chinese spot? Probably not, but it's relatively authentic Chinese restaurant that's clean, cheap, and just simply good. I've gotten Mongolian Beef and Sesame Chicken lunch special which comes with a choice of hot and sour soup or "egg flower" soup (which is egg drop, but this place is so Chinese they did the literal translation!). Also had the Sichuan fish and beef chow fun which were both delicious. With the exception of sesame chicken, everything else is very un-Panda Express like and not drenched with sauce. I frequent this place during lunch time around once a week and the food here is always AMAZING!! For the lunch special, you get a choice of soup between egg drop soup and hot and sour soup, both of which are soup-er yummy. You get to choose your entree and it comes with an egg roll and a bowl of rice to go with your entree. Some of my favorite entrees are the sweet and sour pork or the beef and broccoli. The sweet and sour pork is crispy and satisfies your taste buds. Whereas the beef and broccoli is a classic, something you cannot go wrong with if you do order this dish. For the quality and value of food you get, this is a steal. Another plus is that the food is cooked really fast. Despite this place being a bit of a hole in the wall, it reminds me of the Chinese food that you can find in Los Angeles Chinatown. Say goodbye to long drives to Convoy street because Chef Tang is in town! And there's no MSG. I was waiting to pick up my youngest after school. Normally he drives himself but because he crashed his car yesterday (yep, on the day of the solar eclipse), he needed a ride. The "Opening Soon" of Chef Tang's (former Chinex location) beckoned me. I rushed him to his dental appointment and dropped him off at home (gotta do that homework). Taco Tuesday was dumped in favor of Time to Eat Chinese Tuesday. That's a thing, right? :) The interior is clean and spacious with plenty of seats. The open kitchen is immaculate. Everything is prepared to order. No hot plates, warmers or microwave in sight. Everything is prepared Sichuan (Szechuan) style so Chin's better watch out. The menu is extensive and they'll be adding more items such as chef specials once they get more established. In a few months, after they get a liquor license, the Fortune Bar will be up and running along with Happy Hours specials from 4pm to 6pm. It was mid-afternoon so I wasn't too hungry so I only ordered a cup of wonton soup, garlic spinach, and the beef broccoli. You get 2 spring rolls when you check in. The wonton soup was perfectly seasoned and included 2 wontons and just enough Chinese cabbage for filler but not too much to overwhelm the portion serving. The wontons were all pork, no fillers, no veggies or cabbage. The spring rolls, also perfectly cooked, were filled with cabbage and carrots. Large pieces of beef flavored with a bit of sugar (but not too much) with perfectly cooked broccoli (a hint of al dente). The garlic spinach was thoroughly washed. You know how sometimes spinach has that crunchy taste because you're eating dirt. Nope, not at Chef Tang's. It's like he washed every leaf by hand. You can safely order this dish if you're on a date because just enough garlic to flavor the dish without scaring off vampires or causing your date to run. You're probably tired of seeing the work perfect used a gazillion time in this review, but when everything is perfectly cooked, prepared, and presented, you can't argue with perfection. Customer service was excellent. Lei Tang (Chef Tang's son) was working as the waiter. Chef Tang prepares and selects all the food and does all the cooking. Lei told me how they came up with their logo and the concept behind the restaurant. Chef Tang's food was well prepared, flavorful, and Lei provided excellent service. Chef Tang's is a great addition to the neighbor. I'm looking forward to my next visit. read more

Ordered crispy wontons, hot & sour soup, egg drop soup and a version of honey walnut shrimp. First off, the prices were great. I love the fact that I can get a cup of soup for $1.95 and it was a good cup size. The hot & sour soup was great. Very tasty. My husband had the egg drop soup and was very pleased. We split the shrimp but was so tasty I could have eaten the whole thing. I do wish that there was a little more sauce but I like things saucy. We will come here before Chin's now. read more

Prices are good and the owner and his father are great people who really care about the food they are putting out. I love the hot&sour soup, it's to die for. Cold and crisp with a zing to it. It is like that Lays potato chip commercial... you just can't eat one. * Singapore Curry Rice Noodles ~ This dish of thin noodles, angel hair like was perfectly spiced with curry with nice sized shrimp and pork mixed in this was a phenomenal dish that was enjoyed. Add a little more to it with the chili oil or house mustard and watch your pours open up with sweat. * Steamed Pork Dumplings ~ 6 bad boys that was simply delicious. Filled just right, with a great flavor to it. Mix it with the house mustard or chili oil provided and you have brought yourself to a whole different level. * Beef with Black Bean ~ Another dish we enjoyed with the beef that seemed like it was marinated in this spicy black bean sauce . A nice flavorful rush to the taste buds with every bite. * Mongolian Beef ~ Beef, it's what's for dinner. A flavorful rush that I had made extra spicy. Sometimes you just have to sweat it out to enjoy it. Great dinning experience, with everything that was ordered, they also gave us a bowl of white or brown rice to mix and match. Tried this restaurant for the first time. We all thought it was some of the best Chinese food we have ever had. The Mu Shu Pork and the Singapore Curry Rice Noodles were especially good. Seriously, when a shrimp is so soft that lacks texture is because it has lingered way too long without being served. Those enthusiastic praises regarding the quality of their fried rice were overhyped and absolutely misleading. Mongolian Beef, $17+? reinforced the point that the high praises lacked substance. Both the male and female waitress were very nice. Comparing it to Chinex, the restaurant that used to be there, it is so much nicer, classier, and cleaner. Not to mention how much better the food is. The food was fabulous. We ordered the Szechwan eggplant and the orange peel chicken. The eggplant has a wonderful flavor and a nice kick. The orange peel chicken is way better than the Panda Express chicken you would normally think of. You could actually taste the orange. I would highly recommend checking this spot out. This is a nice little place, looks more high end than others in the area. We came in on a Saturday after they opened at 4 and it was completely empty, we had the whole place to ourselves so service was fast. Our waiter was super nice and helpful, giving us recommendations and constantly checking on us. I got the shredded pork with garlic sauce. It was the right amount of spicy but a bit too salty for my taste. I ended up very thirsty and feeling kinda ill from all the salt. My husband got the Mongolian beef - the winner of the night - incredibly tasty, not too sweet and those onions were cooked to perfection... yum! I definitely prefer this over the shredded pork. Entrees come with white or brown rice. We got 2 free spring rolls for checking in on Yelp, they were small but very good. Oh and there is no beer or wine on the menu. This restaurant ended up being a bit more out of the way then I had expected. However, it was a nice open restaurant that was decorated in a trendy style. I ordered take out: the ma po tofu dish and soup. The soup ended up having egg in it and was ok. My hubby likes the soup at panda garden more due to flavor and consistency. This soup was a good runner up! I got a little worried when I ordered the ma po because the server kept warning me that it was super spicy. It did end up having some heat to it but it's not as spicy as some green curries I've had! I actually really liked the flavor because it had the spice and also other flavors in it. I would make the trip up there to get it again. Plus I liked the soft tofu. If you like a firm tofu then this probably isn't the dish for you unless they have different tofu available which might be worth asking about! read more
