Expanded out of my Seamless comfort zone with Chef Yu last week, and I'm gonna call it a hard pass. Three dishes and three strikes: - Tofu Vegetable Soup ($7.50): Decent portion but flavorless. Broth didn't taste like much, tofu didn't taste like much, couldn't get myself excited to finish it. - Vegetable Dumplings in Szechuan Style ($7.25): The dumplings themselves had decent filling and wrapper texture, but the sauce was some kind of peanut sauce and chili oil mixture that was heavy and gross. - Cold Noodles with Sesame Sauce ($5.95): Simple dish, right? Nope. The sauce was just lumped on the top (and was way too thick and peanut buttery), so it was impossible to mix with the cold noodles. Noodles were just spaghetti. I make this at home, and I make it better, and I've only done it like twice. Finally, they need to be a little more realistic about their delivery. Quoted 15-30 minutes, called at 35 minutes, was told it was on its way, and got it 15 later. So 50 minutes total, which isn't awful, but not what the deal was when I ordered. Maybe avoid what I got and you'll have a better time here, but I'm taking my three failed dishes as a warning since they're typically easy to execute. read more

I've never been to a restaurant that I had to wait over 30 minutes for a drink...yes OVER 30 minutes for a drinks. Was here with some company, my acquaintance who suggested Chef Yu said they had a good happy hour. I will admit they had a decent variety of drinks for happy hour but it is nowhere near worth if I have to wait that long for one drink. Mind you the bar was not even far from where we were sitting and the restaurant itself wasn't packed. Do not understand what the hold up was at all. After we finally got our first drink, we ordered some shrimp dumplings. The look of it when it came to our table was very presentable but it lacked flavor and could had been heated up some more. Chef Yu is earning his keep just north of Hell's Kitchen. Impeccable setting with crisp linens and a perfectly set table start off the experience. The drink list was robust and the service was fast and attentive with several different wait staff teaming the table. The dishes were all well presented was the quality was exceptional. The soups were absolutely fabulous with an rich selection of wonton bowls. I had the duck wonton soup and never had better. Second course was the spare ribs which reminded me of fine Chinese dining in San Francisco and southeast Asia. Seafood mix was the main dish. I found this a bit bland after the soup and ribs but still high quality. What really surprised me were the reasonable prices. Dishes in neighboring restaurants are 20 to 50 percent more. Lunch special takeout. Got shredded beef with spicy pepper, wonton soup, salad, and two mini-vegetable rolls. I love their wonton soup, but have no idea what sort of meat is in it. Their shredded beef dish was good, but incredibly oily, and not spicy at all, even though it's supposed to be. If you'd told me the dish was from Panda Express, I would've believed you. Service is quick and cordial, and by the look of the sheer volume they do at lunch, they are a popular place with repeat customers. I'm not sure about dinner, but the lunch comes with a spring roll and a mini salad. I ordered the baby shrimp with broccoli and was pleasantly surprised that the shrimp were really medium sized. There are some of the non AC food on the menu, mostly in the appetizer section as well as the soups but the majority are your generic type. The hot and sour was the very much take out American type, entirely sour with a little bit of heat and outside of a single over boiled wood-ear, completely filled with thin strips of bean curd and some shredded tofu. No ginger or other vegetables in sight. It wasn't as gloopy as the bad takeout places so at least there was that though there was a thin layer of oil. The shredded "Szechuan style" beef was not even spicy and had a ton of shaved carrots and some other vegetables with some tiny pieces of beef. It was quite sweet and full of oil. For 9.50 + tax, I expected more meat, even for a place like this. It came with two mini spring rolls which lacked the heavy oily flavor of the rest of the meal as well as a salad with some wilted lettuce. I would say that it might be because I got a beef dish but even the chicken and broccoli someone else ordered was the same price. The soup menu, specifically the Cantonese section looks interesting enough but this meal left a bad taste in my mouth (in more ways than one.) Came here a couple of times for lunch and dinner. This is more fancy than a traditional Chinese American restaurant. And it is more pricey. This place is spacious and it has a bar. It also offers the traditional Chinese american food but they make it look nicer by having better plating. However it does taste better than the traditional Chinese fast food. The difference between this place and the traditional Chinese American restaurant is that they have an extensive menu. They have all the usual Chinese American food like sesame chicken and chicken with broccoli. However they do have some traditional Chinese food on the menu that you usually don't find unless you go to Chinatown. Lunch has a better deal with it's lunch special menu. But it does get very busy during lunch. The portion is also a good size. Dinner has the happy hour special until nine and it includes cocktails. Their sister restaurant is what I use to go to. But since it closed down I'll be visiting this restaurant more. The good thing is that they have similar menu and Chef Yu has the shrimp dumpling with peanut sauce! read more

What I got looked like that, except it came with what resembled and tasted like Pad Thai had been mixed into it. While I'm not one to turn down extra food or Pad Thai, I ate the dish, which wasn't too bad; however, I don't think it was what I originally requested. From working in various offices in the unglamorous Garment District, I've noticed that Chef Yu is a staple lunch spot that my coworkers love to frequent. I wouldn't go out of my way to come here on my own, but it's a decent place for ordering takeout or dining in as a group. Almost everything I've had here is slathered in grease, but hey, sometimes I just want to treat myself and voluntarily make my cholesterol soar. My favorite dish to get is the stewed beef noodle soup. The portion is generous for the price and has a good amount of beef. It's not spicy at all despite it being noted in the menu. Must say I'm not a fan of their pad thai at all though. Not sure why a Chinese restaurant has a Thai dish in the first place, but it completely lacks flavor and all you can taste is sesame oil.
