If I were to put my experience into one sentence: come here to enjoy food if you are willing but not quite willing to try authentic Chinese food. Yelpers, do not fall for the hype, because I rather eat else where after my first bite. I have arrived at 4:10pm when I just missed the lunch special. You would figure the manager would have granted me the lunch special, but she did not budge. I have asked her recommendation, because it is my first visit. She was not helpful at all. Chef Me? Chef Yu! Probably your best bet for Chinese in the area. The lunch specials are all under $9 for a huge plate of food with a bit of salad and spring rolls, and the food is served up hot and delicious. The biggest draw for Chef Yu enthusiastically is the posh two-floor interior (perfect for lunch meetings) and the cheap-ass drink specials for happy hour. We also partook in some menu items which included: Szechuan Pork Dumplings Spicy Diced Chicken Minced Chicken Beef w/ Green Chili Peppers and Tofu Of the four, I enjoyed the beef w/ green chili the most. Try to stay at the bar because getting seating is difficult, not just because 1) I don't think one can make reservations, 2) there are enough people aware of this fantastic happy hour to cause waits, but also because of 3) the hosts/esses are total dip shits when it comes to managing the folks waiting for a table. Once I was there and no host could be found, so many of us just kept scanning tables, looking for openings so we could pounce on. And when I tried to talk to someone who looked like he was in charge, it was like suddenly he was deaf. But when you finally sit, and down 3 glasses of wine within a hour or your choice cocktail on their list, it's all good. The food is tasty: Sichuan cuisine is from the south of China thus the likelihood of good tasting food is higher than a place that serves, say, Shanghainese-style food. The service is usually pretty craptacular, but at least they come around when it looks like you're low on sips. I have yet to grab food here because there's too many cheaper and more authentic options within two blocks, and Sczechuan Gourmet is no more than a ten minute walk away. Plus, it's just too close to my work to be able to kill off an entire hour for lunch. But being close to work has its advantage. Chef Yu is an exceedingly high brow place for being both located at this part of 8th ave, and for being a Chinese restaurant. The decor is sharp, romantic, and spacious. The spotlight happy hour deal is $4-$4.50 cocktails and the list is epic. There must have been 30 different choices of girly concoctions (not that the girly part stopped me from ordering them). The few I sampled were, as cocktails are meant to be, decievingly strong. I wouldn't go as far to say that they were extremely well made, but I'm not a cocktail fanatic and they are just fine by my standards. This being the area where I spend a sizable portion of my life at the moment, I really appreciate Chef Yu where I could easily bounce from work to get some cheap drinks, and then easily catch a train. Some advice for the 9-5ers in the area. I know how frustrating the tourist crowds in front of Macy's can be, with people deciding to stop dead in their tracks to pictures of the Empire State Building and such, but a few drinks and a slight buzz can turn all that around. Never really understood these type of places. Old school Chinese restaurants in Midtown, yet the restaurant itself are these huge, beautiful bank/club-type spaces. Food's decent, budget friendly, and extremely spacious. But the key: $4 happy hour from 4-8PM. Here, they actually have a drink menu that lists the drinks, wine and beer part of the deal (versus Ginger's, where they claim ALL drinks are $4. Make me wonder if their Kettle is really Kettle...) I asked for a Kettle and soda here and he said "That's not happy hour, cost you $9." "Get the house vodka, it $4." Sold. 3 rounds later, 1 beef fried rice later, off to find a bottle of whiskey. So I have been here several times and the only reason that I bother to go back is mostly for nostalgia, (this happens to be one of the first places I went with my now husband on our third or fourth date.) The atmosphere is decent, the food is okay (one step above your traditional chinese food restaurant in the hood), and the drinks are cheap on happy hour. This would be a great spot to go to after work or on a date, if and only if the servers weren't crap. I mean it's golden from the moment you enter and are seated, after that it's pure unadulterated shit. And I've been to this place multiple times...everytime the service is shit. You will be ignored for a good ten to twenty minutes in an empty restaurant with 3 or 4 servers just milling about the restaurant trying to look busy. Make sure you don't drink your water or soda while waiting for your food because you will never see your server again to request a refill. But what takes the cake is the "mandatory service charge" that they tack on to your bill so the shit servers can get a tip. I am all about tipping, I usually would pity tip if a server is having a bad day,however these servers are lazy af. Terrible place. read more

Pains me to say but after having attended this place for years I will never do so again. I brought some friends in just before the end of their daily happy hour and they yell back at me letting me know its over at 8, which I know, current time was 755 pm, they said their computers are ahead, I say, not exactly my problem. Here is a tip: The restaurant is on the corner of 36th street. There is a huge office building that says 520 and it is not in there. The guard there said a lot of people come there looking for the restaurant. But there is a mini take-out restaurant in there too. I went to this restaurant for the first time yesterday and it was great. I went after happy hour at 8pm to avoid a huge crowd. I was greeted as soon as I walked in the restaurant and we were seated immediately. We waited about 5 minutes before anyone came to take our order which wasn't bad considering it was still kind of crowded. The inside of the restaurant is very classy and nicely designed. There are lots of tables, upstairs and downstairs, with linen table cloths that they change after ever diner leaves. The also have candles lit on every table. It looks like around happy hour (4pm-8pm) time is where it gets the most crowded and noisy so if you're worried about noise come after 8pm. I ordered an appetizer which was ready minutes after I order it. Our food came about 10 minutes afterwards and it was great. I had General Tso's chicken with white rice and my boyfriend had Chicken Pan Fried Noodles. They made my chicken crispy which is the way I like it. Some other places are usually soggy. My boyfriend eats a lot of pan fried noodles and he enjoyed his food. They also give you very good food portions. The juice cups could be a bit larger but I'm a person who usually drinks after she eats all of her food so it was fine for me. I didn't have a problem with getting the attention of the waiter's. The design makes the place feel swankier than it is when you consider the good deals they have, and there is nothing wrong with that. They have a long list of old-school drinks you don't see around much anymore, like a singapore sling. Some drinks are weaker than others, however, and some come in very small glasses. I didn't know Chinese American food could be soooo good... Chef Yu has your typical Chinese American dishes such as General Tso's Chicken and Beef & Broccoli. Although they claim to be authentic Chinese, there are a few atypical dishes like the Spicy Basil Chicken (more of Thai cuisine) and Lemongrass Chicken (Viet or Thai cuisine). But if you can get over the debate whether their food is authentic or not, you'll be treated to some delicious food. I ordered the Spicy Diced Chicken (7.25 + $0.64 tax = $7.89) with Vegetable Fried Rice as takeout. I was informed it would be ready in 20 minutes. Sure enough, when I got there my order was ready for pickup, still pretty hot. The bag was pretty heavy and I wasn't quite sure why, but when I finally opened the brown bag, I was surprised to see several containers. There was a container each for the Spicy Diced Chicken, Vegetable Fried Rice, and salad. Additionally, there was a 4th package with two mini egg rolls. Yes, complimentary salad and two mini egg rolls although the menu does not state it's included in the Lunch Special. Even a small ziplog bag with a fork, napkins, soy sauce, Chinese mustard and duck sauce was provided. I was already a happy Yelper, but now onto the food. - The salad consisted of chopped lettuce, bean sprouts, cucumbers, julienned carrots and onions in a slightly sweet and spicy ginger dressing that tingles the tongue. - 2 mini vegetable egg rolls with a crispy skin and was not too oily. The inside consisted with what appeared to be cabbage and carrots with a sweet flavor. - Vegetable Fried Rice was mixed with diced carrots, onions, mini edamame beans, and a few scant pieces of fried egg. Dressed in a light soy sauce that did not cover all the rice entirely, made for a tasty yet not too salty concoction. The rice was a little soft as if it were fresh. I prefer for my fried rice to be made from a day's old white rice so it's more firm and handles better with the other ingredients. - Spicy Diced Chicken consisted of cubes of very tender and flavorful dark meat chicken in a red chili pepper and black bean-based oil sauce. It had a noticeable amount of heat though not overbearing, keeping your mouth nice and warm. But to make things more interesting, they also added scallions and an even portion of spicy green chili peppers that packed some very good heat. The green peppers were not overcooked so that it still maintained a crunch and some of its rawness (spiciness). This dish was delicious! Chinese restaurants are usually epitomized for its tacky pink tablecloths and cheap cushioned seats, but Chef Yu's is far from that. Chef Yu's ambiance is very modern and chic chic with its dark wooden floors, white tableclothed tables, black wooden chairs and golden hued lights. Overall, I was surprised at how much I enjoyed my dish and am already thinking of coming back to dine in. read more

My girls and I randomly stopped in this restaurant for a quick lunch on our way to see an amazing show. We had zero plans to go here, and no one even opened up her yelp app to check it out first. We're so adventurous! The staff was super accommodating when our large group asked if we could be served as quickly as possible. I mean, we only had about 30 min before we had to leave, which must have been annoying to hear, but our server and manager said it would be no problem. They helped us order appropriate items, telling us which would come out quickly and which would take longer. Every dish came out in less than 10 minutes. We tried shrimp dumplings, pork dumplings, shrimp lo mein, and some scallion pancakes. Everything was a very generous portion, and reasonably priced. My friends were all obsessed with this dipping sauce that was served. It was like a yin yang of a spicy peanut sauce and soy sauce. The cocktails were also very delicious, and all under $10. Didn't seem like a large wine selection, but we also only glanced quickly at the menu so I could be wrong. Great place to stop in for a quick lunch. I would also think it would be great for a dinner as well. There were a lot of tables that would accommodate large groups, so it would be good for families as well. I was surprised by how large the restaurant was - two stories, which makes for a cooler ambience. All in all, it was a good time. Would I go again if I were back in the area? One of my favorite chinese restaurants in NYC outside of Chinatown!! Everything I have tried at Chef Yu has been amazing so far! I would definitely suggest trying the Spicy Diced Chicken entree...simply delicious! Especially if you're into spicy foods...this is it! It's not really a dish, but I really love their fried rice...to me, that's one of the main things to get me to come back to a Chinese restaurant...theirs is one of my favorites from anywhere. It's a big two-story space (good for getting a large group of coworkers together to welcome or say goodbye to someone). If this is not the worst Chinese restaurant, it is surely one of the worst. The food was awful and the service was as bad (if not worse) than the food. We ordered the pan fried dumplings as an appetizer. The dumplings were very dry inside . With the shrimp and broccoli we ordered, the coating of the shrimps no taste and the shrimp itself tasted like old cardboard. And the vegetable dish (which you would expect to be more fresh tasting) was way too oily. We will definitely never return to this establishment. I thought I mistakenly stepped into Asia de Cuba when I first walked in -- the decor of this place is possibly the best out of the Sichuan restaurants that I've been to in New York. It's very roomy and can hold private parties. However, the stars end there. Maybe Chef Yu was off on the Sunday night that I went, but the food was mediocre. The popular Sichuan dish, beef submerged in a pool of peppers (shui zhu niu), was small and mixed with a brown sauce that I don't quite associate with authentic Sichuan cuisine. I thought I would have to balance out this normally tongue-numbing dish with a sweet shrimp with walnuts dish, but that turned out unnecessary. It's close by to my work place so when I want some chicken and broccoli, this is the place I opt for. Lunch menu is super cheap ($7) and filling. Service is usually really quick. The restaurant has really high ceilings which makes it look bigger than it actually is. Never sit on the second floor because the lighting is terrible. Seating is also never consistent. Sometimes I'll be seated by the window in a secluded table whereas other times I'll be seated in a table 6 inches away from the one next to me. Unbelievably salty. The dish, which I can't even recall, was well-prepared, great presentation and portions, and even tasted great EXCEPT that the strength of the salt overpowered everything. My coworker claimed that this was a tactic to sell drinks. It worked on me because their happy hour drink list is spectacular. A whole sheet of cocktails for $4. I went back a second time, just to see if it was a fluke, and ordered something different, again can't recall what, but I could even finish my meal for all the saltiness. This is from a guy who eats Shorty's cheesesteaks on a weekly basis! Summary: bonus point for the drink specials and being in midtown near where I work. read more
