I went down to Cheliz to grab a breakfast burrito on Sunday and I was surprised at how busy the place was. It was packed! Must be a good sign, right? Anyway, I decided I didn't want to wait for a table so I ordered the chorizo burrito to take home. Although they were clearly busy, they said it would take ten minutes and thats just about how long it took. Once I got home I really enjoyed the burrito. It was enormous and very delicious, one of the best I've eaten. It was not cheap, with tax it added up to $13, but I have to say it was worth every penny. It came with two salsa cups, the red sauce was not hot at all, and the green sauce was a little hotter. I like my food extra hot, so I added some tapatio on top. We were on our way out of town and decided to stop in. The restaurant is small but every seat was full when we walked in, always a sign of good food. The staff was super polite and had a table cleared and had us sat right away. The wait staff was super busy but took the time to help with menu questions and even caught a minute to chat with our two toddlers. The food was delicious! I tried the beef dip with fries. The beef was flavorfully, bread was fresh and the au jus was tasty. My kiddos scarfed down their breakfast, anyone who knows toddlers knows this is a true test. Overall it was a great experience. Decent brunch place with a Mexican focus. The waiter recommended their chili verde sauce so we tried their enchiladas as well as their skillet. The chili verde sauce had a good sour flavor although I didn't think it was mind blowingly good. The skillet was very well made! It comes with potatoes that are crispy perfectly and three eggs cooked your choice. We got over medium eggs and they were cooked well. Finally the sausage, mushroom, and onions we chose for the skillet were a good addition although there were too many onions added. Would definitely recommend this! The skillet came with biscuits and gravy. Unfortunately they were bland and not well textured - it's nothing compared to a true Southern biscuit. Finally I will say that their service is very fast. So happy that I was invited to join some friends for breakfast after a full morning of playing Pickleball. It started raining, so what's the next best thing to running around?...EATING! The restaurant was packed when we arrived, but the staff was hustling to clear, clean and set the tables as soon as the customers left, so the wait wasn't long. I like to look at what others are eating and at every table, each plate looked delicious! 2 gentlemen even told us that we needed to try their omelets and skillets because they are the best in the city! 3 of our party had breakfast and 1 person had a spicy burger with a side of zucchini, EVERYONE cleaned their plates! Our server Alfonso was the perfect blend of efficiency, friendliness with a healthy side of recommendations. I ordered the chilaquilles with pepper jack and avocado...every bite was delicious! Chili verde had just the perfect blend of heat and the carne was tender! Another guest had their mushroom, sausage and jalapeño skillet and I was able to steal a forkful...yum! Our burger lovin friend said that his spicy jalapeño burger was really good, he only wished they would've grilled the jalapeños instead of them just being sliced raw and added. That also would've elevated the skillet breakfast as well. The fried zucchini was a hit, fresh n crispy. While this burrito can cost you $13, it's a pretty good size that feeds me for two meals (eat 1/2 for breakfast, and 1/2 later for a snack). If you do order to-go, I recommend asking for additional green/pico de gallo salsas ahead of time. They tend to get busy sporadically. Often of the pickup order is not ready, I walk over to 99 Ranch to order some menudo. I've also had their Skillet, French toast and chilaquiles. The fried chicken was too crunchy and semi-dry. The senior citizen breakfast combo was perfect, but could have got the same amount of food for cheaper at Dennys. Soda is $3.95 per cup + refills. A family of four will spend $16 on just drinks. There are a variety of places in Redlands with better prices & food! The decor should reflect the prices on the menu, but the restaurant looked plain. Cheliz has the best food, best price-point, and loveliest cafe atmosphere around. Our family loves the kind staff, consistently good American homestyle cafe food, and quick service. Kids always go for the Mikey pancakes, and my husband and I go there just for the Chicken Fried Steak with sausage gravy. As a Texan, I can say they offer one of the best in California...that ain't no small thing. The kids have also given Cheliz the award for the best French Fries they have EVER had award. I came here for breakfast burritos and got a few. A few bacon and one sausage burrito. The burritos tasted great in my opinion. They were also very filling. I personally liked that there were onions and peppers in the burrito I know other family members didn't. One thing I personally didn't like was that the potatoes were cubbed rather than hash brown style. I loved their salsas. The green one was the best, but the red also had great flavor. Seated quickly, I was rather surprised due to many people already served. Smiles ran rampid in this place, so I knew I was in the right place. Afterall, yelpers give this place a high star rating. Ordering a breakfast burrito, hash browns and a coffee, my meal ticket was an easy $14.55. Not impressed! The hidden upcharges was a lil absurd. I added avocado to my burrito along with sour cream. I did order hash browns and I'm glad I did. The breakfast burrito was rather small. I received two coffee refills. Replenishing my coffee wasn't the best service. The time I had to wait between refills was slow. Thankfully, I asked for water. Also, the coffee was a luke warm temperature which got cold quickly. Leaving a tip for service, plus the expense of my small meal was an easily undeserved $20. I realize this establishment has many upgraded touches which I couldn't help to think that my money was paying a loan rather than a dining experience. Although my breakfast burrito was delicious, I feel this establishment missed the mark big time in my opinion. With not many options in this location for food, it's not a big surprise that this establishment does fairly well. I'll admit, I will not be back. We waited about 5 mins and we were not handed menus. Another couple came in afterwards and the waitress wiped the table they walked to and handed them menus not even bothering to hand our table the extra menu in her hand to our table. We tried to flag any of the staff down and was ignored so we got up and left. I've been here before and the food is great but this was terrible service and hospitality. read more

We have tried a variety of their dishes, from the chilaquiles to the skillets and even the French toast. Everything has been so flavorful and cooked to perfectly. I had the pleasure of eating at Cheliz over this past weekend. Let me tell you, anytime I'm in Redlands I go to another breakfast spot but I did want to wait forever. I arrived around 1030am and was able to be seated right away. They have a large menu but I wanted one thing which was menudo. I'm very selective about my menudo such as not having hominy. Unfortunately the menudo did come with hominy but they did make an attempt to leave as much out as possible. That being said, I did get hominy in my menudo this time around. Let's put it this way, i ate everything minus the bowl. This includes all the broth. The coffee was delicious. The service was outstanding. Not one did I ever feel rushed even after the bill way payed. The waitress kept coming around to top off the coffee. There's plenty of parking. Overall an excellent experience. I can't wait to come back. Oh and before I forget they have menudo 7 days a week which is awesome. read more

Location: In a plaza on the corner of Lugonia Ave & Church St. Decided to come here because our other two favorite breakfast places were crowded for Father's Day. Ordered Takeout: Ribeye steak (dinner). My son was so hungry and enjoyed eating his meal on the way home. The steak was so soft although he wanted more Mexican rice to go with it. Overall it was a tasty steak meal for $17 and it comes with salad or soup. He would order this again. Cheliz omelette. $11 My husband said it tasted good. Nothing really special about it although it filled him up. He got the biscuits and gravy to go with it too. Breakfast Combo $11 I ordered the 2 pancakes with 2 eggs 2 bacon & 2 sausages. My eggs were over cooked, but the pancakes was good. Doubt I'd come here to order this again. Now that there's dining allowed indoors, it was just odd walking in the restaurant with it being fully packed and everyone had no masks on eating or waiting to be served. Found this lil gem after being too hangry to stand and wait outside Carolyn's. I was very happy to pull up here and see no line out the door. We were seated and greeted by a friendly lady (who happened to be the owner) as soon as we came in. She went over some of the menu items and gave us recommendations. The menu has a wide variety of options to choose from which are decently priced and portioned. I went for the Philly cheesesteak which was tasty and very filling. In addition, the place was nice and clean. There are two areas that I could be improved based on my experience and other reviews I've read: 1) faster service, there were only about 4 other parties when we arrived and they had already been served yet our food did take a while to come out - can't imagine what the wait time would be like with a Carolyn's size crowd! 2) food was good but it was very greasy so that was a turn off - minimizing the amount of oil used to where you're not wiping your hand after each time you hold the bun would feel nicer and healthier Nonetheless, still satisfied with the food and service, would come back and try some of their other plates.
