I drove past this place a couple weeks ago and thought it'd be nice to try sometime. Tonight was the perfect opportunity to pick up some nice Mediterranean and this place was a big win. If I walk into the place, I noticed it was open and clean and colorful. There were a couple of folks sitting at tables and walked up to pick up my order which I put in ahead of time and noticed all the food that was pre-prepared and ready to put in the orders all looked wonderful and fresh. I had ordered two number 3 plates. One was with gyro meat and chicken. The chicken tasted wonderful and wasn't overcooked. The second plate was shawarma & chicken and the shawarma was better than the gyro meat. The pita bread was the best I have ever had. We had gotten the hummus, sharizi, mast-O-Khair, Miriam ghasemi and plenty of the pita. Of all 4 dessert items the baklava cheesecake took the cake for sure lol. This was my first sit down meal in New Mexico. Coming from LA, I had pretty high expectations which this spot absolutely delivered on. The simplicity of the presentation was beautiful. And the ambiance so calming yet vibrant in color and highly accessible - with high dining tables affording wall outlet access and various normal 4-6 top tables. The employees were very kind, most notably one employee who as she was walking out the door on her break smiled at me the most genuine of smiles before giving me questioning thumbs up. Everything about this place is average from the food to the service to the atmosphere. I think the quantity and variety that you get is lacking for the amount you pay. The bowls themselves are pretty bland as they only contain one base, one protein, and one topping. Even any other style restaurant would let you have multiple toppings for the same price you pay here. I will say that I really do enjoy their 505 Fries. These are delicious and the chicken Shawarma is a great addition on top. Atmosphere is OK where everything is clean, but overall it seems a little busy and crowded in terms of the seating arrangement. Service is fine. Nothing exceptional, nothing bad. read more

Chello Grill is a Persian restaurant with a variety of unique flavors and dishes. Most of the sauce, salad, and "side dishes" are vegetarian and many are also vegan. Some will not be familiar to the palate of many Americans or even to my international food- loving palate, so do be aware of that. It's a good place for trying totally new flavors. You can get small sizes to try something out if you're not sure if you'll like it. The restaurant is bright and clean, upscale casual. It feels like a chain but is local. There are various desserts and a lot of tea and other drink options as well. The falafel and flatbread are nice. We came here after the gym after many times of passing by and saying we wanted to try it. The place was clean and spacious and right away the staff was friendly and let us know that if we had any questions to let them know. We went with Plate 2 which comes with two meats and two sides. We chose the Gyro meet which was delicious and flavorful and the chicken shawarma. The plate had great portions of the meat and came with rice that was cooked to perfection. We also got two sides. I loved the Shirazi salad and the Mast o Khiar a minty cucumber yogurt that went perfectly with the pita bread and gyro meat. In addition to this we got the flavorful 505 loaded fries which are a must get! The fries meat and cheese with the seasoning are the best! We loved the baklava cheesecake paired our Ruby Crush drink! I ordered the Traditional Gyro and a small Ghormeh Sabzi (I got the last of what they had, sorry everyone else!!) My goodness both were awesome!!! The gyro was huge, so come hungry!! Since I love Persian food, it was a "no brainer". I was delighted. Plus, I was anxious to meet with these friends. Since it was my first time here, I wanted to start with what I consider the basics - beef kabobs & Persian rice. I have Persian friends in CA and they have previously introduced me true Persian food. Starting with these basics, I knew next time I could branch out and trust it all to be authentic. Yes, there were a few "extras" on the menu that catered to the New Mexico in us, but primarily Chello Grill is true to Mediterranean cuisine. Big gap here between some of the offerings and others. Chello grill might want to consider paring down the menu here and focusing on their best items. Gyros - 1/5 - Hard skip. As others have mentioned, it's pretty flavorless. Mine was kind of hard and crusty too. Really can't recommend. Shawarma - 1/5 - A little dry, but again, pretty flavorless. Can't recommend. Kebab - 4/5 Tender and tasty, but could do with some more spices. Yogurt Dip - 3/5 Nothing to write home about. However, it does seem odd that you need to order yogurt dip as a side. Most Mediterranean places just give you a small cup of the stuff. The side portion is more than you need, as well, which seems a bit wasteful. Tomato Eggplant Dip - 5/5 So good we took ours home. Plenty of flavor here. You can tell they're using good tomatoes for this. Hummus - 5/5 Possibly the best hummus I've been served in a Mediterranean restaurant in this state. This was my first time every trying Mediterranean food and OMG I was blown away. Walking in the atmosphere is very calming. And when I went up to order I asked for recommendations and what some of the food was (I didn't understand all the food on the menu) and The gentleman behind the counter was very helpful and explained the dish I was interested in. As a Persian from Dallas, I wanted to try out Persian food in a different state. I loved my food at Chello Grill! Sorry for no food pics, the food was too good for me to stop and take pics. Maybe next time lol. The ladies that helped serve and make our food were so nice and accommodating. I ordered the chicken kebab for myself and my daughter. I was a bit sad I was a couple days short of getting the koobideh but the chicken kebabs were great. I also ordered two sides; yogurt with cucumbers and tomato/cucumber salad. Both were tasty as well! Food took a bit to arrive however it's made fresh to order so I definitely did not mind the wait. If you find yourself waiting make sure you get a cup of their lime/lemon infused water. Very refreshing! Great food, great spot, and very sweet workers! read more

Came here with my mom for lunch on a Wednesday for the half price gyros. The restaurant was really clean and not too crowded. The service was excellent and quick. We each got a regular gyro, and split a side of fries and a half Greek salad. This cost about $21 before tip. We also got a free piece of baklava for joining their text club. The gyros were BIG. We honestly could have split one between us, as we each ended up taking part of our gyro home. They came with tomato, cucumber, onion, and tzatziki sauce. My mom thought the meat was a little less flavorful than another gyro shop in town. I liked mine, but thought the tzatziki sauce was just a little heavy on the dill, but that's just personal preference. The fries were really crispy and the salad was a nice fresh addition to the meal. The baklava was delicious! Would 100% recommend. Overall, we would come back again. read more

I'd heard about this place so I was really pumped up for my favorite of food - Mediterranean.. The counter where you order was very organized and clean looking for great presentation. Very friendly service. I ordered a favorite - Koobideh kabob. But, it was disappointingly - bland. The rice was fine but the salad had too much house dressing on it. I had to add salt and then some tomato, eggplant, garlic sauce to the Koobideh to give it flavor which is not typical. I will probably come back and give it a second try on the Chicken kabob. OrGyros but it's frozen and reheated. The deserts looked great so I got the triple combo to try. All were very good - especially the Baklava. Chello Grill is a Persian-Mediterranean fast-casual restaurant located in the Pavilions at San Mateo complex next to Einstein Bagels. They focus on sandwiches, bowls, kabobs, and salads. They also have gyros; those are a Persian version of a gyro instead of a Greek gyro that Chello calls the "traditional gyro". They also have a New Mexican-inspired version of a gyro where the meat has been cooked with green chile and comes with a side of green chile yogurt aptly called the "New Mexican gyro". I ordered the traditional gyro, which comes with sliced lamb meat, two tomato wedges, and then a blend of diced cucumber, tomato, and onion in a folded pita. Had parsley been added to the diced vegetables mix it would have been considered their Shirazi salad, which one can also order as a side. I added feta cheese for an upcharge. The gyro came with Mast-o-Khiar, a cucumber yogurt dip, on the side. A Greek variation would be tzatziki, which is more common with gyros in America. I added french fries for $1. The gyro was almost tasteless. I actually ended up just eating the lamb slices with pieces of feta and discarding the rest of the dish. The Mast-o-Khiar didn't add anything to the meal. The fries were fine, but I would have preferred them with more salt. I guess $1 for those was fair given how forgettable they were. The cutlery was plastic and the ketchup for the fries was in ketchup packets, which gave the meal a cheap feeling even for fast-casual dining that didn't seem commensurate with the pricing. Overall, a surprisingly flavorless meal for an interesting sounding restaurant (Persian-Mediterranean!). I wouldn't recommend it or return. read more

Stopped in for lunch with some hungry teenagers who hadn't had too much exposure with Mediterranean food prior to this - All of the teens gave a thumbs up as they gobbled up hummus, gyros, soups and baklava. My sister brought my mom and I to this location. I hadn't been before, but was excited to try something ethnic, because there isn't much where I live. I would say this skews more Persian/Iranian, but I think there are some other Mediterranean and Middle Eastern influences. I opted for a one skewer chicken kabob. I got hummus as my side dish. My mother got gyro meat with a salad. My sister got the chicken and a salad. I wasn't sure what the portion sizes were going to be, so I ordered the Mediterranean fries. I didn't need to order the fries. The fries were just out of the fryer, so they were super fresh. They added some gyro meat and feta cheese over top. It was served with lemon wedges. I squeezed the lemon wedges over top and dug in. My mother and sister joined in. Absolutely delicious. The chicken I got on my plate was perfectly seasoned. They were smaller pieces, but not dried out. The rice was fluffy. There were some grilled squash, half a grilled tomato, and a piece of grilled chile. It was a good looking and good tasting plate. My hummus was served in a small takeaway container. At first, I thought it looked grainy, but when I started eating it, It had the smooth texture I expect from hummus. It was delicious and there was a lot of it. We were given a plastic bag with a few large pita breads. I didn't even try the pita. I opted for an iced tea. There were a few self-serve options. Small cups, though. I got a refill before I left. The decor inside was interesting. It was like recycled chic. I found the orange and blue painted fish bowls or light covers interesting. (not sure quite what they were.) The walls had exposed but lacquered plywood. Prices are incredibly reasonable. I saw that they have a fundraising program. They do have a loyalty program, but one would have to spend quite a bit of money, in a short period of time, to get any real benefit. There was some middle eastern music playing, some of which I recognized, but it wasn't too loud. The young man who took our order was incredibly patient and helpful. He kept repeating what we requested, just to make sure. As we changed our minds, he didn't even miss a beat. I can't wait for my next trip to ABQ, so I can stop in! read more

The restaurant is tucked away in the corner of the shopping mall so it may be hard to find on your first visit. But it does have nice turquoise and orange decorations out front as a visual landmark. Nice seating, casual atmosphere, very friendly staff. I had the new Mexico gyro with fries. Nice size portion, and the omnipresent green chili flavor was subtle but a nice twist on an otherwise Mediterranean dish. Although I did not have this time, another menu option is the bowls, allowing you to choose various options to design your own dish. The price is very reasonable. Nice ambient lighting.
