I just want to say thank you to Yelp for recommending Chengdu Taste. Yelp usually misses the mark but this time it was spot on. We happened to be in the area after spending a few hours at the Korean spa. We decided to get some Chinese, specifically szechuan. Chengdu is located in a shopping strip. There is plenty of parking. Upon seating, we ordered from a QR code so interaction with the waiters were pretty limited. Here's what we got: Dried pot spicy chicken Stirred fry beef with celery Green beans Chengdu fried rice Everything was spiced just right. To me it wasn't too salty, spicy or sweet. Szechuan food doesn't seem to be a very "saucy" cuisine, rather they tend to use spices like salt and cumin and lots of chilis and some dishes may be a bit oily so just know that coming in. I am so glad this is the first Chinese spot I visited back home because it took me right back Items ordered: Fried Rice, Couple's Beef in Chili Sauce, Shredded Pork in Garlic Sauce, Dan Dan Mian (not pictured) Fried Rice was decent portion for the price solid all around. The Shredded Pork dish was the table favorite and incredible portion for the price. On top of a bed of white rice, it's impossible to not go for another bite. I've been thinking about eating this again for the past week haha Couple's Beef (cold dish): Of course to cool down from the Sichuan spice, a cold dish (but also soaked in chilis). This dish was decent and a nice neutral table appetizer. Dan Dan noodles were extremely tasty, I would've loved to get a bowl myself. I came here to see if I can find a Szechuan restaurant around here that can pack a punch and remind me of my time in Chengdu, and this restaurant did a decent job. The chicken with the chilly sauce is a must have. My friend and I were blown away by it. The food here was spicy but in a good way. I might be wrong but this seems like the first Chengdu taste, definitely in the area. I'm from the SVG area so theres already 2 in that neighborhood. The food here is delicious as always, kitchen is always working up a storm and dishes come out quickly! Definitely spicy but you can always ask them to tone it down for the folks who can't hang but want to try. I've been to all of them and I want to say the portions here are bigger, we definitely had some leftovers the next day. This is our go to place for Chengdu food, which is like a supercharged Chinese food where the taste is elevated by the smorgasbord of spices. Everything we've tried is super tasty but some of them are not for the faint of heart (or stomach for that matter). The fish soup with green pepper has very tender fish chunks that are cooked to perfection. It's medium to hot spicy and very addictive. There's plenty of bean sprouts and some thinly sliced cucumber like greens as well. The fried rice with smoked pork is oh so tasty and flavorful, and not spicy at all which provides a good balance for the other spicy dishes. Mapo tofu is really good and maybe one of the best out there, and only mildly spicy. Best to be eaten with steamed rice. Service is prompt and food comes out quickly. Order through the app by scanning the QR code on the table. Good portion with plenty of leftovers which are still good for the next day or so. Szechuan cooks are a pugnacious group. The food of this region resembles more of an arsenal than it does a cuisine. The dishes aren't so much dishes as they are materiel used in warfare. The Szechuanese have found a way to take AK-47s, M-16s, Colt 1911s and Remington 873s and translate them to their culinary equivalents. Effective, dangerous - and through poetic license - they've made them delicious. Dining at the Szechuan table is the closest thing in gastronomy to a cage fight. I recently went three rounds at Chengdu Taste. This is a place where the Sichuanese cook for the Sichuanese (yes you will look around the dining room and notice faces of diverse origins; but when the dishes arrive and so dominate your senses, those faces will drift into obscurity, and you will be left to contend with the fighting spirit of ma-la). The dishes arrive at our table. They are (1) suan cai yu, water boiled white fish in a crowded broth of pickled mustard green, garlic, and peppercorn; (2) second sister's rabbit, wok fried with celery and chilies; and (3) mapo tofu. Mapo tofu is the least challenging of the three. Soft curds of soy bean set atop a marsh of ground pork, chili oil, and fermented fava and black bean. In one way, this is a prototype for post-modern dishes. It is the fresh curds of one type of bean served with a sauce of two other beans. It signals later dishes that combine the same ingredient in different configurations: an antecedent to the famous "5 Ages and Textures of Parmigiano Reggiano" at Osteria Francescana. In English, "Mapo" translates to "grandmother." Fitting name for a comfort food. Then, you look deeper into the word as you taste more of the dish. "Mapo" doesn't simply mean "grandmother," but specifically "pock marked grandmother." This hitherto sweet old lady begins to show the scars of a difficult life. And those spoonfulls you're eating are growing sharp around the edges. The chili heat and peppercorn electricity forebode the struggles to come. Suan cai yu is a refreshing thing. The whitefish is more tender than a cloud. The broth is thin, but garlic and peppercorns give a stoutness. And the mustard greens. You have eaten sour things before. The bite of lime after a tequila shot has caused your face to pucker. But I'm pretty sure you haven't found many things out there that are so deeply sour that they cause your shoelaces to curl up. Such are these pickled mustard greens. Yet, these strong flavors notwithstanding, the mild flavor of the fish is not buried. Then there's "second sister's rabbit". Due to the fact that translations are never exact, this title contains some ambiguity. When you order this dish, you will not be eating the pet rabbit of someone's sister. Rather, the dish was initially created by someone's second oldest sister. Anyhow, not that that really matters, but it should ease your mind if you, like me, were worried about sisters being bullied. With the rabbit you will find even more ma-la. It's like stuffing a C-battery with bird's eye chiles. The idea is that the numbing quality of the peppercorns allow you to imbibe more and even more capsaicin. Beyond this, you will find bones and lots of them among the little chunks of rabbit. The heat acts as a jab, blinding and disguising the bits of bone that you will have to avoid chomping into. Really, it's not that difficult. I'm using pugilistic imagery because I recently made the blunder of bringing a group of Chinese food neophytes to Chengdu Taste. This is not a restaurant for those unfamiliar with un-Westernized Chinese food. I should have brought them to dim sum, but I wanted to try this place out. Let's just say I was able to enjoy most of the food. And it certainly is enjoyable. read more

The restaurant is located right next to a Chinese grocery store, so we went to the boba shop next door after lunch and went shopping at the grocery store there. This place has officially become my favorite Sichuan restaurant and it is well worth the drive Prices are reasonable and portions are big. Spicy chicken (La zi ji)- this is actually spicy! I've been to so many places where it's either not spicy enough or doesn't have any spice at all. Portion is big and chicken is tasty. Fish soup (藤椒鱼）- I don't know the exact English name that they use for this dish but it is also the best I've had so far. I chose the regular one, not the one with the fresh fish. It comes with a lot of swai, cucumbers, bean sprouts and bamboo shoots. The soup is quite spicy so I wouldn't recommend it for those who can't handle the spice. Sour and spicy potatoes- a dish I always get whenever I go to Sichuan restaurants and this is easily my favorite. The potatoes are sour enough and not overcooked. It adds a nice crunch to the meal. Portion is also big and very packed compared to other places I've been to. So far I've come here twice and the food is very consistent in terms of taste.
