After a long day of walking on the beach and sightseeing, we made it back near home and decided to stop by Java Cafe since it had been quite a while since our last visit. Java Cafe specializes in traditional Taiwanese cuisine with authentic home-style flavors that are becoming harder to find nowadays. The restaurant has a simple, casual atmosphere without any fancy décor, but it's comfortable and feels like a neighborhood spot where locals come for a satisfying meal. We ordered the following dishes for two: Bamboo Pork - (Great) Tender bamboo shoots paired with flavorful pork in a rich, savory sauce that mixed perfectly with steamed rice. It was a simple but delicious traditional Taiwanese dish. Mixed Combo (Braised Pork Tongue, Pork Intestine & Braised Tofu) - (Great) A classic Taiwanese cold appetizer featuring braised pork tongue, pork intestine, and tofu. It comes with a special soy sauce mixed with fresh ginger for dipping, which really enhances the flavors. A must-order for anyone who enjoys authentic Taiwanese cuisine. Blood Intestine - (Great) Traditional Taiwanese-style pork blood cake and braised intestine prepared with authentic flavor. The pork blood cake was noticeably larger than what most restaurants serve, giving each bite a fuller, more satisfying texture. The savory sauce was also excellent over steamed rice. Sautéed Squash - (Excellent) Fresh squash lightly stir-fried with garlic. Simple, healthy, and cooked just right. The squash released its natural sweetness and flavorful juices, making it a perfect dish to enjoy with rice. Pineapple with Bitter Melon Chicken Pot - (Excellent) A comforting soup with tender chicken, sweet pineapple, and bitter melon. The sweetness of the pineapple balanced the slight bitterness perfectly. I was surprised by how flavorful and delicious the broth was. Between the two of us, we finished every drop of the soup, leaving only the ingredients behind. Steamed Rice Overall, it was nice coming back after such a long time. The food still delivers the authentic Taiwanese flavors we remembered, and the prices remain very reasonable. Every dish tasted like traditional Taiwanese home cooking, especially the Pineapple with Bitter Melon Chicken Pot, which was the biggest surprise of the evening. If you're looking for authentic Taiwanese comfort food rather than trendy fusion cuisine, Java Cafe is definitely worth a visit. This restaurant stir-fried it, while Eat Joy Food served it as a cold dish. Bamboo Shoot with Shredded Pork was good, but I thought Newleaf Bistro's was slightly better. Sauteed Shredded Pork, Squid, Celery & Bean Curd and Cilantro Root with Beef were both excellent with rice. The meat in both dishes was tender, and the sauces tasted the same, but I preferred the one with more beef slices. Minced Pork Over Rice was good, but I thought Tofu King's in Irvine was slightly better. The bean curd in Stewed Combo: Seaweed, Soy Sauce Egg & Bean Curd had a texture similar to fish balls, which I didn't like. The braised peanuts served before the meal were delicious. For three people, with two bowls of white rice and seven dishes, the total after tax and a 15% tip was $149.14. For convenience, we rounded it to $50 per person. 1/17/2026. I've seen this place but never tried it because the name is 'Java'; sounds more fitting for a coffee shop. Anyway, finally tried it after all these years and have definitely been missing out. It's a small place and very packed on a Sat afternoon. We got a table right away luckily. One of the ladies speak Cantonese and she took the time to introduce specials on the board which were only written in Chinese. She was patient with taking our order. And check this out because nowadays, there's nothing free! However, you get free tea and a little plate of peanuts! Wow, those freebie days are long gone so it was a nice surprise they offered tea PLUS stewed peanuts! Stinky tofu: not my fave. They used firm tofu and the dipping sauce was not the Taiwanese garlic sauce; a little disappointing there. Four God Soup: yes, will reorder. Generous portions of barley and tender pork stomach. Comforting! Rice noodles with pumpkins: one of their signature dish- rightfully so! Comes out piping out. Green onion pancake: skip, not worthy. It's thick and barely has any scallions. Intestine with basil: delish!!!! Made very well and definitely needs to pair with rice! Pork chop rice combo: fried just like popcorn chicken. In the past, most of the takeout orders from this restaurant were placed by elderly family members at home, and we rarely dined in ourselves. The overall flavor profile is quite light and mild. The sesame oil kidney dish, in particular, tasted like it had little to no salt, so it's more suitable for people who prefer food in its original, less seasoned form. The prices are slightly on the higher side, but the portion sizes are reasonable. It's a place I might revisit occasionally when I'm craving Taiwanese-style dishes or home-style, mom-like flavors. This little spot servers authentic Taiwanese food. It got reasonably busy during lunch time on Sunday but we were able to get seated a little after 1:30pm without waiting too much. When we entered we smelled a strong smell of stinky tofu so we knew we had to give that a try. Here are my thoughts on the food. Clear Stewed Beef Noodle Soup - I liked it, it was simple, clean and meat was tender. Pretty delicious. (4.5/5) Deep Fried Salt and Pepper Oyster - This dish was good. Its fried well and the oysters were tasty. Great seasoning. (4.5/5) Stinky Tofu - Personally didn't like this but also I'm not a big fan of stinky tofu in general. I think the tofu could be crispier overall but yeah it's pretty smelly. (1/5) Sauteed Garlic and Vegetable - Personally thought this was whatever. It's basic but if you need greens its not bad. (2.5/5) Minced Pork Over Rice - The portion was small but the flavors were good. Best thing we had easily. Very tasty dish. (5/5) Deep Fried Fish - Fried perfectly and flavors were good. We dropped in here after seeing our Taiwanese movie. When we lived here in 2006-2007 it was easier to find good Taiwanese eats in this hood. The wife says that has changed over the years. If you're a fan of real-deal Taiwanese flavors, this spot is a must-try! I came mainly for the stinky tofu and three-cup chicken, and both were incredible. The stinky tofu had that perfect level of funkiness--crispy on the outside, soft inside, and paired with tangy pickled cabbage that balanced everything out. The three-cup chicken (san bei ji) was full of flavor--savory, fragrant, and slightly sweet with that rich basil aroma that fills the whole table. It reminded me of home-cooked food in Taiwan. This was our first visit and we first arrived, I felt very rushed. Later, I realized that I barely made the cut before their lunch break which made sense of felt rushed. I'm glad they took us in instead of sending us away! I went specifically for the rice noodles soup and the stinky tofu and both didn't disappoint. Coming from a picky eater, that means something. At the first bite, I thought the rice noodles were not salty(flavorful enough) but when I added the white pepper, the flavor popped. The soup came out HOT, which is exactly how I like it! We ordered two stable side dishes and both were flavorful and tender. The stinky tofu was served last but it was worth the wait! It is quite authentic especially pairing with the pickled cabbage and the hot sauce. Speaking of the hot sauce, did I mention that I am a picky eater? I am not the one hot sauce goes with everything kinda gal and their selections were perfect for what I needed. Another worth mentioning, their restroom was very cleaning!!!! The restaurant has been around for at least 15+ years and I stopped by this cafe for a quick lunch in recent months. [Parking]: Has a free private parking lot and I had no issue finding a spot to park. [Service]: Subpar service, but there were complimentary peanut appetizer and hot tea. [Menu]: The restaurant advertises their Taiwanese hot stir-fry dishes as their speciality and this places also sells special Lunar New Year dishes every year, but some of hot stir-fry dishes are seasonal. 3.5-4 stars I have passed by Java Cafe countless times over the past few decades but never tried it until this past week. They are located across the street from Boomers Parks (previously Speed Zone, and pre-previously Showboat). Java Cafe always felt so ambiguous to me and I never would have thought it was Taiwanese food until a friend mentioned it to me. We have heard great things about the dishes from many Taiwanese friends. I grabbed a physical paper menu earlier this week, and after looking through the entire menu, we decided on 2 entrees to try first. I phoned in an order and it was ready within 15 minutes! Lunch Menu Complimentary stewed peanuts appetizer Chicken w/ Sesame Oil & Soy Sauce (Three Cup Basil Chicken) $15.95 Shredded Pork w/ Dry Bean Curd $15.95 Front the outside, I seriously thought that the restaurant was bigger than it looked. It is quite small, and a bit cramped on the inside. There are only a few tables, including a "party" room that is a bit separated off. The biggest pet peeve were the containers were a bit shallow and both the entrees had sauces (the chicken more than the shredded pork), which actually spilled all over the bag, and into my car as well. Without the sauce, the Basil Chicken was quite dry and this dish is all about the sauce, especially over the rice. Sadness. In the past, when we ordered Basil Chicken from other restaurants, they were in tubs with lids so the sauce would not spill out. There were also lots of bits and pieces of chicken bone everywhere so eat with caution. As this was the lunch menu, both dishes came with 2 "bowls" of rice as well, which is convenient for on the go lunch. The Shredded Pork w/ Dry Bean Curd was a bit on the dry side. There were lots of dry bean curd than shredded pork, thus the reason why it was more on the dry side. Make note that they are closed every day from 2:30-5 pm for an afternoon break. Overall, flavors are good. Prices are a bit high for what it is, but there are not that many Taiwanese 小吃 places around here anymore, so hope that they continue to thrive. It kind of reminds me of my childhood eats. It's that good. Oh, did I also mention their Beef Noodle soup is terrific here? It has a hint of spice but not overwhelming. The noodles aren't too thick nor too thin. The beef pieces were tender and flavorful. I am going to order this again next time just for myself. I didn't have any expectations for this restaurant since i just came to eat here because I was hungry & it was convenient since it was just next door. Anyway, being Taiwanese, I'd say this Taiwanese restaurant is decent. However, I'm not a huge fan of Taiwanese food (lol). The stinky tofu was decent, I think it would have been better if the tofu was cut into smaller pieces and a bit crispier. I also ordered the 3 cup chicken & it was a little above average. The service here was quick. Waitresses were nice. Ambience is cozy. The price is very reasonable as their portion is pretty big. Very authentic Taiwanese restaurant. We ordered quite a few dishes and all of them were really good (and this is coming from someone who has been spoiled by all the good food options available in LA) I am not sure why there are so many one star ratings for the bad service, because we thought the waiters were quite attentive and welcoming. The restaurant location is ok but the venue needs some update. It felt a little bit cramped when the restaurant was full. The service was quick and we got food not long after placing our order. The food was acceptable but not great. The price was a little bit high. We have ordered four to five dishes and the bill was almost $120 ... I am a regular there. My favorite dish of all time was the "五更腸旺"，we all agree this dish is the best in town. I also recommend the 美極三文魚 salmon, the 3 cups chicken, the special seasonal 龍鬚菜 veggies. Parking is easy, the staff was nice. They only have 1 big table for 12, and may be 8 tables for 4 ppl. So I order togo most of the time, and I would go during lunch which is not as busy. read more
