We always go there when we visit Frisco because it is very authentic Indian food.. Always very busy .5 out of 10 for cleanliness. They don't practice normal restaurant etiquette. First time here after having been recommended by an acquaintance. Food seemed okay upon perusal, but after having served myself (buffet) the tandoori chicken pieces were very dry. Almost had a day old reheated texture to them. The Naan was very very thin and didn't have that just baked puffy quality. Chennai Cafe is a nice large restaurant with plenty of seating, etc. but I won't be coming back anytime soon. I will look for another Indian Buffet. On several occasions the food has been room temp to cool. I understand when rice or other dishes are piled high as Mount Everest can cool off, but no excuse for the foods with a lot of sauce in the pans. Lentil dishes, tika masala, etc. I think it might be time to get better steam tables. Also, the last few times no saag, or the creamed spinach dish whatever it is called. That is a popular staple never missing on other buffets I have been to. I love Tandoori chicken, but when you cannot recognize the chicken parts, not good. They seemed to use back pieces full of bones etc. I sifted through the pile looking for a leg or thigh and those common chicken pieces were no where to be found. Very bad, disguising with a lot of sauce, nameless chicken parts. The tika masala had more sauce than actual chicken cubes. It seems they are cutting on the meat and an acceptable ratio to sauce. I have no complaints about bland food, there is flavor yes. I can't take spicy so I am ok there. Food was really good for the price that you get it for! I believe an all u can eat buffet was $17.99/person which is a steal because a lot of the dishes are incredibly well made! They had a fresh dosa and appam station when we went and the appam served with coconut milk was INCREDIBLE. Would probably come again. read more

Amazing food. Everything was amazing. One of the best tasting buffet I had in a long time. I tried almost everything starting from dosa, appam, batura, chole, nettali fish, chicken masala, biryani, country chicken curry, bhendi masala fry, daal, sambar, rasam, etc. Just wow. Friendly staff and place is well maintained. Highly recommend this place over other Indian restaurants. Try the appam and coconut milk as the dessert. This is the 2nd Indian buffet place I've visited in the DFW, and it did not dissapoint. (1st one being India Palace 635/Preston) Me and about 8 other coworkers went here to have lunch. I was surprised to see how big the restaurant was and it was packed, very cool decor on the walls, and statues and ceiling art as well. I took a walk around it was great, everything looks amazing and smells great, they also have Dosa stations. Dosa if you don't know it's kind of like crepe but made out of rice it's neither sweet or salty you can eat this with potatoes or with any curry / sauces etc. this is good!!! The ambience was so good with some pleasant Indian music playing in the background nothing hardcore like Panjabi MC and also people working there were very nice and quick with water filling etc. The price is around 15$ per buffet which is not too bad, they had 3-4 different kinds of curry my favorite was the lamb/goat curry, and I also like the mushrooms they had and the buttery chicken (the tendori chicken had good flavor but it was a bit dry) ... both of the soups were great!!! one was more spicier than the other I believe it's the rasam? they also had a dessert section I've tried a bit of each but I'm not a sweet person they were good but overly sweet for my taste. They have live Dosa stations and also appam stations.In addition to that, They also have Kati roll Stations. The ambience was so good with some pleasant Tamil songs playing in the background and also people working there were so courteous. On the advice of one of our hotel's employees, we decided to try Chennai Cafe's Wednesday Dinner Buffet. The gentleman was from Kerala, where I lived for sixteen years, so I trusted his advice. And the restaurant was a mere ten minutes from the hotel. We arrived a bit after 6:30pm and upon entering, stood and gawked liked the tourists we were. The walls had bas reliefs much like I'd seen in the Temples in Kerala. The lighting was exotic with inlaid stained glass in the ceiling. There were not many diners at this hour, so we were seated immediately. We made a cursory pass of the buffet and found a very nice variety of foods from Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Kerala, Tamil Nadu and Telangana. The manager told me that they like to always have representative dishes from these five states at the Dinner Buffet; the daily lunch buffet is not so extensive. It was dosa time! The cook at the dosa station will make to order any of the twelve varieties they offer. We chose the most popular, masala dosa, the filling being potatoes, peas and spices. Also, there is an appam station but unfortunately there was a lack of communication in the kitchen the previous day and there was not enough batter to last the evening. Seeing my disappointment, the manager went to the kitchen and was able to salvage just enough batter to give us a taste which we gobbled up then and there. Appam isn't seen on many menus; it's a mixture of fermented rice batter with coconut milk and it was my breakfast on many a day. And this small bite took me back to the first time I tasted it. To quote the title of the 1979 George Hamilton movie, it was "Love at First Bite." But back to the dosa. We chose a tomato chutney as an accompaniment and it was perfect. The combination of the dosa with it's slightly Parmesan cheese flavor, the spicy potatoes and the chutney just couldn't be better. I seriously considered a Mysore Dosa to follow up but decided against it--the buffet beckoned! I was delighted to find that thalis and accompanying bowls were available for diners to use. My poor companion, Peg, followed me around the buffet as I muttered almost incoherently the names of the various dishes, the ingredients and now and then plunged a serving spoon into the steam table to fill one of my bowls. The look on her face was one of desperation but she soon got into the swing of things and began filling her thali. Finally, my raving and dashing about was done and we returned to our table. Peg duplicated my thali which consisted of idli (fermented rice cake), methu vada (lentil donuts--spicy, not sweet), sambar (vegetable soup) masala gobi (cauliflower fried with spices), lemon pickle (so wonderfully sour your lips will stay puckered for a week!), venn pongal (spicy rice porridge), butter chicken (very common buffet item), dal (yellow lentil soup), masala chicken (dry fried with spices) and chicken biriyani, which is well known in the West. I was disappointed that my favorite Keralan dish, avial (mixture of vegetables and coconut) was missing. The manager told me that the dish would be out shortly and he would bring me some. He did and it certainly didn't disappoint! I won't go into describing the flavors of each dish other than to say that everything--yes, everything--was wonderful! Perhaps some of the best food I've had outside of India--and that's saying a lot! Usually, I find most Indian buffets lacking substance, flavor wise, so this means a second trip back to the buffet to try different items, not necessarily out of hunger but in an attempt to satisfy on an emotional level what the first round was lacking. This may sound weird, but hey--I never claimed to be normal. But the food at Chennai Café satisfied me so completely on all levels that there was no need to return for seconds. One of my all time favorites, but one that usually disappoints, is chai. Properly made, spices, tea, milk and sugar are brewed together. My Yelper Friend, Adam H from San Antonio and I have a "thing" about improperly made chai, i.e., the sugar is added by the diner. I saw a large container of chai and by it, the accursed bowl of sugar, so I sadly passed it by. But Peg decided to try some; she took a sip and said, "You've got to try this!" I did and to my great surprise it was wonderful. No, it can't be, I must be having a palatal hallucination. But another sip was the same; so was the third. Gentle Reader, I confess to you that I had five cups of that stuff!!! Dessert was a simple affair--the ubiquitous gulab jamun and the fairly rare javarrisi payasam, a combination of sago, jaggerdy (raw sugar) syrup and coconut milk with a faintly caramel taste. Gulab jamun are usually dry, served with but a bit of syrup. These were moist throughout and the syrup had a hint of rose water. The payasam did, I confess, have me return for seconds. Excellent service, remarkable food, stunning décor and you have a dining experience to delight all the senses. Chennai Café is a must try! read more

The buffet is lacking variety for my Americanized taste buds however the attended portion was amazing the young lady made me one of everything on the Pani Puri side. It was literally the best!!! I would have just eaten this had I know how amazing it was. The attendant was so kind and explained everything to me. I did not get all the dosa stuff from the other attendant and I am not certain it was dosa stuff but I think it was. Service at the table in nonexistent we were able to get water refills when we flagged someone down. I will com back for the Puri and Chaat anytime!!! read more

Both times when I arrived after 20 minutes (the time they estimate it takes to cook meal) they were confused and didn't have my order. Twice out of two times. Uugh. ThIs time they were outright dishonest to my face later saying oh it is still cooking, 15 more minutes. I've literally been sitting here for 28 minutes as I write this and still nothing. They are nice enough, just frustrating that their process sucks ... it will be a while before I try again. Good food but VERY inattentive service, even at slow times is Chennai Cafe in a nutshell. We enjoyed the lovely art and atmosphere here, but wished for more folks to liven the place up. Nevertheless, our experience here was pleasant, if a bit lonesome. Freshly fried free papadums dusted lightly with garam masala made for a nice appetizer, and gave us something to do while we waited (and waited, and waited) for our food. We saw it eventually come up in the window, but it took at least 5-8 minutes more for the waiter to notice. He was busy polishing plates at the buffet and chatting with buddies on staff. Once our food arrived, it was delicious! :) I got the Chettinaahu Masala Kari with Mutton. It was very generously portioned with tender mutton in a dark brown sauce with a good spice kick from black pepper and red chiles - I loved it! I ordered mine with rice. And the leftovers were enough for 2 more meals for me. The Chicken Tikka my daughter ordered was delicious, not too spicy for my daughter, and leftovers made enough for lunch the next day. We ordered naan bread with the chicken tikka, which was hot and chewy and crispy - mmmmmm Once our food was finally delivered, our waiter disappeared, and we never saw him again, until we left. I finally waved down another guy to bring us boxes for leftovers and our check. Our waiter did not ever check on us, and, as I said, we were the only paying customers in the place. The freshest item was the lolipop in the basket on the way out. This place is disgusting and unsightly. It will have to go out of business soon given the rents in the area. Any of the recent 5 Star reviews have to be fake. I've eaten here twice: the lunch buffet and the dinner buffet. Both were bad. The dinner buffet on a Friday night was cold and I'm pretty certain based on the texture and temperature of the food it was left over *at least* from lunch, if not from the day prior. The rice pudding had turned. Beyond the old, unflavorful and cold food from the buffet, the place lacks class in any way, shape or form. It might be acceptable to people from south Asia but there are a number of unsightly things about this restaurant. 1) the plastic water bottles sitting out on the floor. 2) the un-sorted silverware 3) the badly taped and hand-written signs 4) the un-uniformed employees, 5) the number of burned-out lights or blinking lights, 6) the broken items and unsightly cash-register area. 7) worst of all, the bus station for clearing plates is in the center of the restaurant feet away from where you eat! Do these people have any concept of what is acceptable restaurant practice? If the people working there weren't carrying an air of mild seriousness about what they are doing, I'd swear it's just a money laundering front for something else. If you want to feel like you've got an authentic Indian experience, definitely give this place a visit. You'll feel like you're in Kolkata. The Frisco Health Dept ought to pay this place a visit. Recommendations to management: 1) require your employees to wear a uniform. Have some pride and respect in what you are doing. 2) Clear out all the old, crooked broken signs. 3) Replace the light bulbs 4) Keep the tables straight and the chairs pushed in 5) Cook fresh food for both lunch and dinner 6) Remove appox 500 plates from those tables of plates. You don't need that many plates sitting out. It's ridiculous. 7) Remove the bottled water off the floor. 8) Provide patrons with a glass for their water. 9) Sort your silverware 10) Bus plates and tables IN THE BACK. 11) Get those green plastic dish washer racks OFF THE FLOOR read more

If I could leave 0 stars I would. My husband and kiddos decided to treat me here yesterday for mother's day to avoid the rush of Sunday. We were enjoying our time until the rude guy who works there asked us to leave because of the crowd that was there. Mind you I had my two children there and we were paying patrons. This did notatter to him and instead of wishing me a happy Mother's day he decided to ask me to leave. There were about a fifty other tables that were there and instead of asking them he decided to ask the mother of two small children to leave and not have a good mother's day lunch. So if you want to patronize such an establishment who does not care to keep their customers happy, go for it, but I definitely wouldn't recommend it when India 101 is so much better and they actually try to keep their business instead of these people who kick people out. read more

Avoid on holidays and weekends! The weekend I went was an Indian holiday and the management did a really bad job managing the crowd. There were huge crowds and just one person managing them. I understand that restaurants are short-staffed these days but they did anticipate the larger crowds and could've come up with a better people management solution. They finally let us in 2:45PM and they simply took away all the food in the buffet at 3PM without giving any warning leaving us with barely any food. I hardly ate anything yet had to pay the whole bill. When I took this up with the person at the front desk, they just shrugged off saying that they can't do anything. Having tried many other Indian places, Chennai Cafe remains our favorite Indian places in DFW. The Sunday lunch buffet remains an absolutely excellent value, but their menu is well-varied and well-executed as well. The food here is consistently good, kids love the naan & curries while my wife & I enjoy the diverse vegetarian dishes. Okay I was completely floored by the size of this restaurant..this place is huge and looked like a pretty good spot for any wedding receptions.. their menu was quite wide too. I have to have Samosas when I got any Indian restaurant... pretty in good deal..we got 1. Samosas 2. Mysore Masala Dosa 3. Lamb Vindaloo They also gave free pappadum..always love those.. Food was great and portions we're huge..I have posted a picture of my Dosa.. I couldn't conquer it. The service wasn't that amazing since the dosa came very late. So took one star off. Nice ambiance. Presentation good. Appears clean. Lots of food options. Taste wise a big let down. Mutton is so chewy that it feels like they took all the sheep from the retirement farm. Not good. The crab are so young that I'm not sure it would pass legal size in many waters. Curry little spicier than many Indian restaurants but not overly spicy. Samosas look better than they taste. I'm always on the lookout for a new Indian food place and decided to give this one a try. The food was good and flavorful. They had a nice variety on their buffet; plenty of choices. Sadly though , they did not keep up with re filling the dishes and so you had to wait and just sample from what was available. The Dosa station is a great touch too , but having to wait in line so long to get a Dosa that your food gets cold is not good . The atmosphere is really unique and adds character to the experience but sadly the place is chaotic and the service is really bad. And on a side note. After calling ahead to find out if saag paneer was on the buffet that day , we were told it was only to find out when we got there that it wasn't . I didn't even bring it up as it was evident that they wouldn't care anyway. I'm left with mixed feelings for this place. Part of me wants to give them another try and the other part says with so many Indian food places to eat in the metroplex, why bother. read more

I tried their Mysore masala dosa and carry out buffet. Dosa was very good. It came with tomato, coconut chutney and sambhar. All of them tasted very good. The buffet did not have too many options for veggies. I picked, Poori, Aloo, Ponugu, Dahi Vada, Lentil masala, paneer tikka, jeera rice, pongal, garlic naan. Except for jeera rice, paneer and poori were good, rest all were below average. Dahi vada was too hard. The lentil ball masala was good, but the ball itself was too hard!! Overall a nice place. I thought the food on the buffet was pretty good so far. During my solo buffet meal my daughters had called and needed a ride home. I informed the lady at the cash wrap my situation and asked if I could take home my 1/3 of a plate of food and asked how much that would be? She said no problem 2. I boxed up my food and went to the cashier and she charged me for 2 buffets. I paid for 1 buffet for my 2/3 plate of food....left the togo plate there and walked out and I will NEVER go back.
