Food sucks and seems to be leftovers made up to be fresh from the buffet because you just cannot order what's on the menu. The entire experience of visiting this place left us gasping for air on the way out. Crowded is one thing, but constant madness more suits the environment inside. Staff overwhelmed and uninterested, food running out, lines everywhere. We heard 2 to 3 plates breaking, possibly more, but the looked unnerved. By the time you get back to your table with a plate of food, it's 50% cold and you are 100% exhausted. Literally had to visit the 'live station' 3 times as they were running out of batter, other supplies and energy. Ironically the food wasn't bad, but getting it was a constant problem. In the end they wouldn't refill items making a sorry statement that the time had ended. Shameful and disappointing, especially considering the high price. it was a Friday night and we settle with south Indian buffet and Facebook suggested Chennai cafe. undoubtedly their Facebook page is excellent with beautiful photos and paid or self reviews but our experience was way more than disappointing. 1. starters - vegetables pakode. no non veg starters. 2 . live dosa and uttapam counter with unlimited supplies. now if you are a foodie you will know how quickly the dishes made from urad Dal, gram flour etc fills you up. They had no mutton , 1 Chicken item and filled everything with idli dosa pongal vada. buffet cost- $14 / person ( like seriously) they lure the customer with attractive Facebook Feeds and creating content. I la la la love South Indian food and even though I live in a big city - it's hard to come by the lemon rice, rasam (with a vada "donut"floating on top), masala dosa. This was so good. I deliver for DoorDash and today I went in to pick up an order. As you may know you have time restrictions you must meet to keep your job and make the customer happy. When I asked for their order the lady said they hadn't started because the people in the back "are eating dinner". Correct me if I'm wrong but I'm pretty sure that's against health codes and the customers orders and food should come before the workers casually wanting to eat while on the job. We eat out at a lot of Indian restaurants throughout the metroplex so it takes something special to really stand out for us. We visited Chennai cafe this week and were blown away by their service, their food and their ambiance. We had their evening buffet and the food was incredible (it was a little on the spicy side, but that's what you should expect from a place called "Chennai Cafe.") That being said, it was cold out and the extra heat from some of the dishes was perfect for warming us up! What I loved: -Buffet was awesome with many unique dishes you won't find at other buffets. -Chai Masala tea comes free with buffet and was really good. -Great and unique assortment of desserts (with Gulab Jamun being excellent compared to other restaurants). -Free live dosa on weeknights! (Common, how can you turn that down?!) -Great friendly staff who will take care of you. -Great ambiance. Need to improve? -Honestly, I couldn't think of anything. Let me just tell y'all that they have the BEST service. The servers were SOOOO nice. I have a brother with special needs and loud music makes him uncomfortable, we asked the server to turn the music down a little and he turned it off and my brother was so happy. We also went on a Saturday and to our surprise they had a buffet with a dosa station. The man serving the dosas was the nicest person ever as well. We thought their dinner buffet is as good as lunch buffet, but it turned out complete disappointment. Food is too salty and cold and any one can say that it is left over food or just seasoned food from noon buffet. Also lot dishes are dried up and nans and bread either become hard or rubbery....They should either close in evening if they are not ready to serve fresh food for Dinner. After hearing a co-worker rave about the Irving location, I was very disappointed in my visit to the Frisco outpost of Chennai Cafe. The location is very nice, and is well decorated and appointed, and the buffet line is somewhat expansive with a number of vegetarian and meat dishes, but that's mostly where the good news ended. I placed a few selections on my plate from both the veg side and the meat side, and sat down. First up was a bit of the quartered naan from the buffet (sometimes they'll bring fresh to the table, but alas) - it was OK, but not outstanding. Frankly, the goat curry was really the one dish that kind of stood out, it had a good flavor and the goat was tender. Chicken tikka masala was a little tough and lacked in flavor, and chicken 65 had almost no heat. Most of the other dishes suffered similarly. Finally, I was hoping for a win with galub jamun for dessert, but even it was mediocre and came with a syrup that didn't excel in flavor, and the texture was a little tough. I also experienced the service issues that others have complained about, but finally a hard working employee just started walking around with the wireless payment device and took people's cards that way rather than delivering and picking up checks; that actually worked out pretty well. I came here with 15 other coworkers for the lunch buffet. I wasn't impressed and all the food was kind of bleh, i like Andara Cafe much better. The only bonus was fresh dosa (plain or masala). The vegetarian options were "ok" all lacking flavor. The best parts were probably the desserts, halwa, kheer etc. Paneer dish was good but wish they wouldn't have fried the paneer before putting in the sauce, it is softer and tastier if just cut up and put in sauce. The cabbage poriyal was bland and the samber just sub par. I would rather have fewer options but have them tasty and flavorful. If they step up their game a little i would come back. Although most of their food is delicious and comes out on a timely fashion, I would suggest joining them for Sunday brunch but show up before their noon opening time because brunch rush gets crazy. Within five minutes of walking in they opened at noon, the entire place was packed and busy. Buffet had an array of items from fresh made dosas, idlis, and appams and everything on their menu was delicious and not too spicy. I highly recommend there beet halwa, mysor Pak and payasam for dessert. For $17.99 a person, this buffet Is great price for the amount and assortment of food available. My brother-in-law treated us to a late lunch here on Christmas Eve. At 1:15 pm, we weren't sure if we were going to make there in time before they closed at 2 pm. When we arrived, I was amazed to see the place nearly full, even so close to closing. We opted for the buffet, and there were nearly 25+ offerings (if not 50), including a fresh dosa & appam station. All the flavors were on point, the meats were tender, and the desserts were surprisingly not too sweet (in a good way). Service was attentive, but not overbearing, and they came by frequently to refill our water. One thing to note: if you're expecting them to bring your check to the table, don't wait. You pay at the counter by the entrance. I'm glad we were able to experience this place, and I'm sure we'll probably come back again during our next visit. Not too spicy and a perfect pair for aapam and dosa / idly , rice and biryani. Buffet item: urulai roast : baby potatoes steamed and then sautéed with cayenne pepper and turmeric. Crispy outer shell as a result of sautéing. Not too spicy, perfect with sambar / rasam rice and also with bisibelabath (veggies cooked in with sambar masala and rice) Buffet item: Beetroot halwa: sweetened beets in a pudding like consistency that will blow your mind. There's a plethora of stuff to choose from. Ranging from fresh salad to North Indian food. There's a range of traditional Tamil dishes, some Of which were better than the rest (the rasam Was garlicky and oily for instance). Prices are $13.99 for veg and $15.99 for Non veg. The fresh dosa section is what impressed me the most. This differentiates the restaurant from so many others. There's also masala chai, but it ain't worth talking about. The hostess did chase us out at one point Coz the place gets PACKED as the clock approaches half past noon. Get here early, if you want to enjoy your food. I love their south Indian delicacies. I am not a fan of their north Indian food and do not go to hog on north Indian food. Their parattas and any type of dosas are the best! The rice dishes in this restaurant stand apart than most of the places in town. They have their own taste and quality. Been there close to 10 times and havent been disappointed. My husband and I went to Chennai Cafe last weekend and they had a Pongal special buffet on Sunday. First of all they were not prepared for so many people! I was very impressed by Chennai Café! I was not expecting it to be such a beautiful place! It is definitely the kind of atmosphere I want when I go for Indian food! They had a buffet for lunch. I couldn't believe all of the options they had! Everything I tried was delicious! They had plenty for vegetarians. Favorites: The grand lunch buffets on weekends are superb (I say this despite the fact that I normally don't like buffets) Samosa Chaat appetizer is out of this world - so full of flavor. You will not regret ordering this ever. Garlic naan - AMAZING Masala Dosa - they have the best Dosas I have tried anywhere Butter Masala curry - this is a favorite with the kids. Kids also love the Mango and Sweet Lassi drinks. Knowing that they're yogurt based amd relatively healthy makes me feel good about ordering them as a special treat for my boys. Masala Chai tea - I don't usually like chai, but it's delicious here. I see a lot of tandoori being ordered and it always smells great as it goes sizzling past our table. Gr8 place, awesome food, must visit. We were visiting Dallas and just went on Sunday, March 26, 2023 for lunch to Chennai Cafe around 12.45 and the place was super crowded which meant the food will be fresh. In-spite of so much crowd, Raghu and Ram along with the full team were on top of things and handled the seating, cleanup of tables very fast and people just had to wait for 15-20minutes which is ok when you get to eat such awesome food. The spread for veg and nonveg was huge, with lot of live stations like appam, pav bhaji, chaat, dosa stations, sweets like gajar halwa, boondi laddoo, mysore pak, kheer, Ice cream and many more. Non vegetarian dishes like crab, mutton, chicken etc were excellent and vegetarian items too were very tasty. I am sure this place is so famous and does not need any reviews but I think people should know about this great place and go atleast once a month / week to taste the awesome buffet. Special mention to the guys working there specially Raghu, Ram & Kiran who kept the hot food coming from the kitchen. People are very polite, humble, smiling and ready to help and serve. If you like buffet and have a good appetite then this is a place for you. The spread is good, however the menu seems not well planned. The spread tilts more towards breakfast than towards lunch. The food has flavor but nothing that stands out. The place seems disorganized all throughout. Starting from the reception even to the buffet counter. The Naan is at one end with the breakfast items while the entree are at the other end with the condiments and salad in the middle! Service is slow. You cannot make out the staff.
