First time I went there, trial run, I picked up an egg roll and a small BBQ pork fried rice. Pretty good, tasty, and no complaints. Then I put them to the test. Anything sweet & sour can usually let you know if it is prepared correctly. Well, let's just say I'll never go back. I tried the sweet & sour pork. Terrible sauce That left a bad taste in my mouth for hours, even though after a few bites I through the entire thing in the garbage and asked the garbage bin for forgiveness insulting its usual content. Chen's Garden is good during lunch time for their decently priced lunch specials. But for dinner, it's just decent. Chinese food is usually greasy and unhealthy but the food you get from here is greasier than most. It's not great but it also isn't bad either. It'll just remain my occasional lunch spot or desperation food. read more

I absolutely do not recommend this restaurant. I ordered delivery and let the woman on the phone know of my seafood allergy, I ordered a chicken dinner. There was clearly shrimp in the rice which was in the same container. When I called to let them know her reply was, "well what do you want me to do". She did not apologize. We had a terrible expereince when we ordered delivery. The orange chicken was a solid block of mush with a few pieces of broccoli tucked underneath. The spicy shrimp had not been peeled and still had legs and head attached. So, I can not recommend this place. read more

You guys. Seriously. This is the worst Chinese food EVER. Last night my husband and I ordered from there--beef and broccoli, mu shoo chicken and fried rice. OK first of all I tried to order mu shoo veggie, like, just leave out the chicken, man, ok? but that message didn't get through and he kept pointing to the pork so I was like, whoa whoa ok let's just get chicken I can pick it out of the veggies (I am def not bitching about this aspect of the experience--I understand that ordering "off menu" is very very Jewish American Princess of me, and I accept that it may be a personality flaw of mine). We wait, food comes, we bring it home and get ready to dig in! BUT! I opened the mu shoo chicken and it really smells like burned oil. Like not pleasant at all, like very burned gnarly oil. THEN! my husband opened his beef and broccoli and had one bite, turned to me, and told me that it tasted like canned steak and gravy--it was so bad that he threw it out. I threw out my mu shoo. And I'm pregnant, like, I'm totally hungry all the time, but that food, or whatever it was, was just too gross. The fried rice was ok though. Don't go here, save your money, even if you are in the mood for the worst-tasting stuff ever. If you are really in the mood for canned beef? Go to Tony's or something and buy some Dinty Moore, it probably tastes the same. read more

I have been eating at Chen's garden occasionally for last 10 years or so. the last couple times I have ordered my food for pick up, I have noticed that the fried rice has been very stale and obviously reheated and then served. The food quality has suffered greatly over the past few years. I will no longer be eating here and would definitely not recommend anyone else. read more

Even though it was a little further than "See Thru Kitchen" it was 100% worth it. Hands down the best Chinese food I've ever had in Chicago. This used to be my go to place in Portage Park but it has slipped. I asked for cashew chicken INSTEAD of sweet and sour in the dinner package but they gave me both and charged extra. The beef in the Mongolian Beef had a weird smell and taste so I gave it to my dogs. The brocolli in all the dishes was cut in peices the size of a small tree. The sauce on the Cashew Chicken was a thick, floury, biscuits and gravy type. I didn't want to waste food so I washed it off in the sink, cut the vegetables in much smaller pieces, and then stir fried it with my own seasonings. The soup and egg rolls were good. Maybe they were busy or short handed that day and I know you get a lot of food but if you want volume only you are better off getting two pounds of french fries at Suzy's down the street. read more

We ordered from this place a couple months back in the spirit of trying something new. Both my wife and I ordered chicken dishes, her the Kung Pao and me the Chicken Kow. We both got Veg Egg Rolls. Thinking it was something new, we ordered the Curry Chicken and Yu Shan Chicken dinner specials. A couple bites into the chicken, we were quickly reminded of the disturbing experience from months past, barely ate any of it, and kicked ourselves for not remembering never to eat here again! The delivery was prompt and portion sizes are huge...the heaviest 2 dinner specials I've ever held in a bag, but the quality and taste leave a lot to be desired. I suppose if you're not picky about taste and need quantity over quality, this may be a good value restaurant, but definitely don't expect to enjoy the food if you're the least bit concerned over taste. read more
