My daughter brought me to the Cherry Creek Catfish Cafe last time I was in Austin four years ago and I remember liking it but couldn't really remember specifics and never got my review written. We went back there Saturday and had an excellent meal. I could see why I remembered liking it. According to my photos which I did get posted last trip, I got the ribs and she got crawfish. This time we started with an appetizer of Fried Green Tomatoes which were excellent. She got crawfish again and gave me a taste. They were delicious. The onion rings were thick and fresh I'm a fan of shoestring style but at least they used top quality onions and thick slices. They had a great texture as well. I got the catfish dinner which was also wonderful. I got the smallest size which had three pieces but they were huge pieces so I still ended up bringing half of it home for lunch the next day. The portions of coleslaw and beans were generous. The coleslaw was obviously homemade, crisp and fresh, and the beans had a nice bacon-y flavor to them. I'm not a huge Hush Puppies fan but as Hush Puppies go they were good. My daughter loves them so I gave her all but one of mine. We decided we were in the mood for a dessert but neither one of us thought we could eat a whole one so we ordered a piece of their chocolate pie with crushed pecan crust, I don't remember the exact name of it. It was a good size piece for only $3.50 and had wonderful flavor. Between the two of us we only ate about half the piece and took the rest home for the next day. They have specials early in the week but not later in the week. However their prices weren't bad at all, especially for the quantity and quality they give you. The service was excellent. My time in Austin is growing short so I may not make it back here but I will definitely have to remember how much I liked it for my next trip. read more

I was pleasantly surprised by Cherry Creek Catfish. The place looked like a cute and casual sit-down restaurant from the pics that had a good menu and was kid friendly. That's exactly what we were looking for and that's just what we got! We had a friendly waitress and the owner coming around to the tables to check on the guests was a nice touch. The menu has a lot of fried fish, with some chicken options for those who aren't a big fan of seafood. I went for the blackened chicken, which came with a side of green beans, Texas toast, a baked potato ($1 up-charge) and a small dinner salad. It was more than enough food at a reasonable price! Overall, everything tasted pretty good. We got thumbs up on the fried catfish! The drink menu is pretty basic. You got your standard beers (nothing fancy), a couple of wines, and non alcoholic drinks. I like that everything comes in a massive cup that rivals a big gulp so I never had to glad down the waitress for more water. Overall, this place is great for groups and kids. I used to LOVE going to the place - some of the best fried food and ribs around; it was a favorite stop for lunch and dinner and staff were always friendly. My husband and stopped there today for an early dinner and let's just say, it was a waste of time. Should have left after seeing signs stating they were out of oysters, but we dedicded to stay. Service was not good and I felt rushed by the waiter. When we went to order our favorite - the seafood platter, there were not any options since there were no oysters. Were ordered the jumbo shrimp platter with a cup of gumbo abd mashed potatoes - wrong move. Food was delivered cold and the shrimp looked like they came out of a frozen food bag - wr have had better breading on our fried shrimp from Costco. The Gumbo was a DISAPPOINTMENT (not hot, not a dark reaux, unlike earlier visits, and sweet tasting with no spice.); there was not enough Tabasco to help it out. The mashed potatoes tasted like paste and the hushpuppies were tiny, greasy and flat in flavour. This was not the Cherry Creek we had enjoyed for YEARS. We told our waiter and all he did was apologize and ask if he could get us anything else- we said no as this was enough disappointment. He brought us our check without any compensation for the bad food. We paid the ticket and was not asked by manager how things were. We paid and left. Waiter never checked on us, never refilled drinks and didn't offer yo allow us to speak with hos manager regarding our food. 2 positives - we were given a Veteran discount and the fried mushrooms were served hot and were good. Again, I could tell they were frozen but at least decent. Just to say, I love seafood and giving lived bear the coast, I have been to some excellent places and have high expectations. Had lunch here for the first time. The exterior of the building was a little outdated. But, the food and staff are really the reason you come here. The food was delicious and the staff were attentive. I tried crawfish for the first time with the gumbo, and as much as I was not a fan, this could have been because I don't eat seafood often. I ordered the blackened chicken and it was amazing. For dessert we ordered the fried cheesecake, and it tasted like a churro with cream cheese. Probably would not eat that again. Overpriced mediocre food served in run-down ambience by well-meaning staff. The over-cooked under-seasoned seafood gumbo had a mushy texture and muddled flavor. The less-than-crisp coleslaw reminded me of the stuff from a carton that had been stored in the back of the refrigerator for days. The pinto beans seemed as if they had just been warmed up after opening the can. The hush-puppies were hard, oil-soaked and bland. The hard fried oysters had little flavor due to being left in the fryer too long. The best part of the meal were the shrimp and the fried catfish filets. Although the batter on the shrimp was bland and too-thick, the shrimp themselves were still juciy. The catfish, though unde-seasoned, was also properly cooked. If I was to drive by this place, it is very unlikely that I would've thought to go inside but since I discovered them on Yelp I ordered for pick-up on DoorDash and DANG! 10/10 recommend giving this place a try! When scrolling through the menu I was struggling between ordering the ribs and the catfish but eventually decided if I'm trying a new place with catfish in the name, I must order catfish! My detailed order: - Catfish Fillet Dinner (3 pieces) - Apparently they wanted to spoil me on my first visit because they gave me 4 catfish fillets! The breading is nice and thin so you don't feel bogged down by it and the catfish is cooked to perfection! The breading could've had a little more spice to it but hey, you can customize with hot sauce. They also send home tartar sauce and cocktail sauce which is a nice touch. - Beans - Delicious! Not the best beans I've had, given we're in Austin with the world's best BBQ selection, but definitely a great complement to the catfish. - Cole Slaw - Just the way I like it! Its cut up into very small diced-like pieces with a sweet sauce (kind of like KFC), which I much prefer to a vinegar-based cole slaw. - French Fries - Admittedly they were a bit soggy but that's the price you pay for pick-up/delivery. Still, very yummy and with a tiny hint of cajun seasoning! - Hush Puppies - DEFINITELY will be ordering the 8-count basket next time. These are so delicious and quaint and seasoned to perfection. - Shrimp & Crawfish Gumbo - This is a MUST order! Delicious flavors with the perfect amount of shrimp, crawfish, rice, okra, and everything your heart desires in your gumbo. COVID-19 update: - Pros - Ordering for pick-up means just peeking your head in, stating your name, and they give you your order right away. There is also up-front to-go parking. - Cons - Be quick to get there when your order is ready because it is not staying warm while it waits for you.
