I like brisket but it is usually too fatty for me so my boyfriend suggested I try burnt ends and I've been getting them ever since. Chester's burnt ends are close to perfect, the only thing missing was a good BBQ sauce. The BBQ sauces available were all sweet and I like mine spicy. I didn't care for my corn bread or mac and cheese, too dry and too bland respectively. I got the Lil' Pit Boss combo (1 meat and 1 side plus corn bread) and it was enough food to fill me up. Overall, Chester's was good enough for me to want to come back so I urge you to try it as well. read more

Our mouths were watering and my friend had never had any type of BBQ before so we decided to go in and try some! We ordered the following: -Chester's Sampler for 2 - $34.75. (3 stars). "Can't decide? Let us pick. 3 types of BBQ, 6 rib bones, & 2 pc. chicken. 3 sides & 2 cornbread." First off I have to say it sounds like copious amounts of food... but we did a pretty good job. We ordered Brisket, Chopped Pork, and Burnt Ends as our BBQ choices. We ordered collard greens, corn, and potato salad for our sides. I love Brisket. My favorite BBQ meat!! CB had a nice smoke ring and tasty sauce on their Brisket but it was not warm (straight out of the smoker) so it was a bit tough and the sauce was cold. Almost a good pick! Chopped Pork was tender but not very flavorful. We had to dunk our pieces in the cold BBQ sauce to down this portion. Burnt ends. Again, not fresh out the smoker so it was very tough to eat. My friend doused his pieces in BBQ sauce and I just stopped eating it. Collard greens was probably the only real item I enjoyed out of our meal. Just the right amount of salty goodness!! Ham chunks were tender. This side seemed like it was just made!! I love collard greens!!! The corn seemed like it came out of a can and was not crisp. Potato salad was very bland. The potatoes were cooked nicely but no hint of seasoning at all. Parking is ample and on-site. CB is located in a strip mall. CB offers catering. CB's BBQ sauce seemed more of a Texas sauce to me. A little sweet. Not terribly vinegary which is great for me!! All in all, if I was in the area and craving for BBQ I may come back for the Brisket and definitely the collard greens but the rest of our meal left me wanting better quality!! They don't smother their meat in sauce. It's dry rubbed and smoked. Just the way I like it. That way I get to choose if it needs a sauce. My family tried the Beef Brisket, Carolina Pulled Pork, Burnt Ends, Spare Ribs, Hot Links, Pulled Chicken Sandwich, Corn Bread & Chicken for the youngin'. All of the meats were delicious, there wasn't one of them I wouldn't order again. Everything was cooked perfectly and well seasoned from the rub. I didn't have to use sauce on anything (I did though to try the sauce which were also good). It's nice that they have the two kinds of sauces (sweet & vinegar base). I really enjoyed the Burnt Ends. Nice and crispy on the outside and tender and juicy on the inside. The only thing that we found "just O.K" was the cornbread. It's more like corn cake. Like in birthday cake. Just not our thing but a little disappointing as I believe BBQ should always be paired with cornbread, coleslaw, corn & watermelon. Where I got that idea being a Southern California dood is beyond me. Maybe my Southern genes. Although we didn't order the Baby Back ribs were were given a sample of about 4 ribs (employees here are really nice including the manager). These ribs seem to be something they brag about in comparison to other local eateries. They have comparison pictures on the counter and on the website. They don't list the restaurants by name but they are local and they will tell you if you ask. They are right, they are the meatiest and best in the neighborhood. We also tried out quite a few of their sides. Baked Beans, Cole Slaw, Mac & Cheese, Collard Greens & Corn. Mac & Cheese is really tasty but a little over cooked for me. Cole Slaw wasn't too sweet = good, but there was a background flavor I couldn't put my finger on that I really didn't care for. Don't get me wrong I still finished it off. But the real stand out for me was the collard greens. This is the first time ever I've had collard greens North of Virginia that were not overcooked and seasoned properly. My wife, daughter and GRANDSON even liked them. Of course we didn't let the little one have too much, you know, all that fiber. Now if you have a group (12) this is the place to go and you don't even have to call ahead. You get a LOT of food for about 10 bucks a head. The thing is though, it feeds closer to 16 people. You won't see this on the web site menu cause it's on their catering menu but they do serve it in the restaurant. You can even call ahead and get the details. High smoke flavor. Crisp rubbed exterior sits atop a thin layer of unrendred fat. Molasses based dark sweet sauce works well. Juicy. Burnt ends crisped on exterior. Hugely smoky. Tender and flavorful. Sliced into 1 inch cubes. Juicy. Also sauced. Wow. Definitely from prime rib section. Friendly service. The #3 - 3 meats with one being a 1/4 rack spare ribs - at $25 is a good deal. Producing a healthy serving - I'd venture 1/2lb or more each of brisket and burnt ends along with a set of 3 meaty spares - is probably enough for two people. Top quality bbq, I will go as far and say it is the best in the area. Prices are quite reasonable and the portions are pretty big. A definite "pig out restaurant. Order at the counter then grab a booth in the huge dining room. I have had food from here three or four times and have tried almost every type of bbq on the menu. Most of the meat comes with only a tiny bit of sauce on it or none at all. I found that the meat really doesn't need to be "sauced" because it is spiced and seasoned perfectly. Though if you are partial to sauce, I prefer the spicy bbq sauce over the sweet. Of all the bbq that Chester's has to offer, my favorites are the brisket and also the hot links. As for the ribs I definitely prefer the fall off the bone pork. The beef ribs are a little to chewy for my taste. There are also a good amount of salty, savory and starchy sides to choose from. Regarding Chester's BBQ....there's something both comforting and twisted about a restaurant whose logo is a cartoon character of the very animal its customers eat. You see, Chester's logo is a pig wearing a hat and smoking a corn husk pipe. It sounds cute, right? Right, but don't get too attached to him because he's probably in the back smoking and cooked to a nice golden crisp. So how does he taste? He tastes pretty good. This place can hold its own to any BBQ down south. Very little fat was found in my pulled pork sandwich. Both sauces were good: spicy and sweet. Chesters is in a slightly odd location (a strip mall) and I probably never would have found it if it wasn't for Yelp. Too bad it's probably 3 times bigger than the size it really needs to be. Maybe they're optimistic and expect to grow over the years. With such a good product, it might happen. Heck, for a reasonable 9 bucks I got a good size sandwich, side, cornbread, and a drink with free refills. Plus, there was no tip because there was no wait service. Wow. I love BBQ. And while working in Connecticut I found this little gem. Right when you walk in the amazing smell hits your nose. The menu is a bit overwhelming, but the options are vast and you don't have to pick just one. I got the Pit Boss - 2 meats and 1 side, and opted for the pulled chicken and pulled pork w/ a salad (trying to keep it as healthy as possible). Chicken: wonderful. Just a small amount of smoky flavor, a little drizzle of BBQ on top (def not needed). Pork: amazingly tender and great flavor. Salad: typical. But the rye croutons were awesome. Cornbread: looked good, but gave it to coworker that was with me. Total cost for lunch $18.88. A bit high for lunch, but it was worth it. So full. Won't be needing dinner tonight. My first time at this place. Just happened to see a sign by chance. The staff was courteous and knowledgeable. The best burnt ends I've ever tasted. The staff were barely interested from the start, like they had much better things to do than help a customer. Food was average at best. Chicken was dry, ribs were cool to the touch. Brisket was decent at least. Half the food didn't come out and it took 35 minutes after letting them know to get the rest of the meal. No offer to comp anything at all, no manager presence. Got a slice of pecan pie because they were out of everything else. There were three very long grey hairs baked right in. We paid. Didn't bother giving any more complaints. My wife and I make it a tradition to stop here at least once a year during the motorcycle riding season. There's nothing like a hearty meal of mouth-watering, finger-licking BBQ ribs to refresh you after a few hours of soaking up the sun, wind and road. It's easy to overlook this place, because it's nestled in a corner of a large plaza that includes a Big Y supermarket and Ocean State Job Lot, among other things. Once you go inside, though, it's a huge place, with tons of booths, and a comfortable, casual atmosphere. Because our rides are not on a fixed schedule, we have somehow never been here when it's busy, so staff has always been pleasant and attentive, and our food prepared quickly. There's a relaxing vibe here, and mellow blues music. It is easy to have a quiet conversation with my wife every time we've went. I usually order a half-rack of baby back ribs, but you can also get a quarter-rack. The ribs are cooked (smoked) with seasonings, but no sauce. You add their three choices of sauce. My ribs were not falling off the bone (it's been a long time since I've experienced that), but they were nevertheless tender, tasty and had plenty of meat with not too much fat. You can make a serving of meat a meal, which includes a piece of cornbread (very good!), two sides and a drink. Their sides are good as well; I usually get the baked beans and fried apples, both of which go well with ribs. Perhaps next time I will try their brisket. Prices are very fair, I feel. The tab for my wife and I was just over $38; she couldn't finish her meal, and I was stuffed (we went late Sunday afternoon, and I'm typing this review after work on Monday, getting hungry just thinking about it!). I'm really struggling to write this review, mostly because I'm not a BBQ expert. I ordered take-out from Chester's for a group of four people. We ordered a pund of BBQ pork, a pound of Carolina pulled pork, two pints of macaroni and cheese, one pint of collard greens, and a pint of baked beans. It was more than enough for all of us. The BBQ pork comes with two sauces- spicy and sweet. I found the sweet sauce to be more flavorful, possibly because the spicy wasn't actually spicy. While it gets rave reviews here, I wasn't terribly impressed with the Carolina pulled pork, but as I said, I am not a BBQ expert. Two of my friends loved it. I was a big fan of the collard greens. They were fresh and flavorful. The macaroni and cheese, on the other hand, was a huge letdown. Very, very bland. I'm not a fan of baked beans, so I didn't try them, but my dining companions liked them. To be the food deserved three stars, but I push them up to four because of the great staff. I placed our order the night before and was speaking with the owner on the phone, and he was very helpful. When I picked it up the next day, he remembered me and we talked for a while about his business. Really great guy. I'd definitely support this place again.
