Just some cool people that I met that are also local! Haha

OK, so I'm a little embarrassed to admit this, but I've been living in Santa Monica for about six years and always walked past this bar. I finally went in for the first time a few months ago, and now I've already been back a handful of times. This place attracts the best people from all over the world. I love the dark, dim, moody atmosphere at night and even during the day inside. I've only interacted with a few staff members so far, but every single one has been enthusiastic, sweet, charming, and genuinely nice. You can enjoy an unlimited amount of peanuts, and whether you're a local or just visiting, you'll almost always meet someone from somewhere in the world you've never been before. The vibes are really that good. I also learned this place has a ton of history, which made me appreciate it even more. Definitely adding Chez Jay to my regular rotation, especially since I live in the neighborhood. Straight 10s across the board!

A wonderful nostalgic spot still going strong in Santa Monica. The vibe was a cool and fun as ever! The food was great! Our service was warm and attentive. A must try when you need a fun night out near the beach!

We are big fans of the tv show Goliath, thus we had to stop at the bar were the main character, actor Billy Bob Thornton gets drunk on a regular basis across from his motel stay that he made a permanent residence at. Unfortunately on Sunday, the bar doesn't open till 2pm, thus we grabbed a drink at the Backyard which is a nice relax place to chill by the beach. A place so close to Santa Monica that the everyday tourist doesn't know brunch exists. We just stopped in for drinks. A wide selection of cocktails and beer is offer. I got the hotel California and it was solid. Seating consists of a small bar. Picnic tables for larger groups. As well as couch seating around fireplace. Need to come again when I can get into official bar.

I love Chez Jay for the historical dive bar vibe. Plus the prices aren't too bad for LA. The bartender was super sweet and very talkative. He made some nice drinks and they weren't watered down... sometimes that can happen in a dive bar, lol. The bartender offered us shelled peanuts and told us to toss the shells on the floor. I love that, it gives a European /international feel. I've never eaten here so can't speak to the food but the drinks are strong!!

Great little gem in Santa Monica! Heike was wonderful helping us get our table for a friends birthday! Stuart was very attentive and the food came out really fast. The dishes were very tasty! Really fun vibe!!

Last Sunday afternoon had another pleasant lunch with cocktails at the backyard patio. Not crowded, just about at half capacity which is nice. We had Bloody Mary's, a Smashburger and a Crispy Chicken sandwich. Food and cocktails were good as usual and the service was great. After 20 or so years, we still recommend this place for its fun and casual atmosphere.

If we come in the day time, is a child allowed? Goofy question I know 😅

From what I understand it's more of an adult atmosphere and I believe they said 12 and up

? Is Wednesday a good day of the week time to go and how busy is it? I see it doesn't open until 2 PM. Does it fill up fast? I imagine weekends is pretty busy.

It won't be crowded during day. Such a cool find a must go

I know the restaurant does not allow dogs, but does the patio area allow dogs?

Yes the outside is dog friendly

Do they still have peanuts that you can shell and drop on the floor post Covid?

No they don't do that anymore

Are teens allowed to dine in with their folks?

Absolutely! We ate here with our teen in April. He loved it!

Do you need to make reservations for breakfast? Can you eat in the backyard?

They are not open for breakfast, dinner only

Are you open for drinks before 530pm?

    yes

    How much is corkage fee?

    $18.00 per bottle

How can I get a hold of the manager if I left my credit card there?

    email them: chezjays@chezjays.com

How is the new outside patio. Does it have heaters?

Yep! Lots of heaters and a fire pit. It's pretty cozy back there.

We ordered Ms. Kim's seafood soup, the clam chowder, shrimp cocktail, and the catch of the day (Mahi Mahi). The soup was bland and lacked what I assumed was the Korean inspired flavor of Jampong. The chowder was good but was on the more savory side and the shrimp cocktail was fresh, thick and juicy. The downer for me was the catch of the day. The vegetables and salad were tasty but the fish was very bland and on the tougher side. It came with a mango salsa but I didn't get any of the flavor of salsa. Everything was pretty pricey as well. Overall costed us $100. Originally I wanted the grilled lobster or fresh crab but it didn't seem worth $70 for me. Overall it was a good experience, but I probably wouldn't go out of my way for this restaurant.

Came here on a Saturday afternoon and even without a reservation, they were able to seat us right away. Definitely 5 stars for service and not being rude, but friendly and attentive even at a busy time (World Cup was on tv!). I heard alllll about the happy hour specials so I was stoked when we were able to get the best outdoor seating and the happy hour was going on until 7pm he said. So naturally, ordered a bunch of things to try. Unfortunately, that was a solid 3 stars for me. It was just fine. I was actually bummed because I was so excited to try the menu items. They were okay. Ordered sliders (kinda dry and without flavor), Parmesan fries (seasoning was there but not very flavorful and the sauce was bland, the krab rangoons resembled egg rolls (that was new!) and fish tacos were meh. My friend ordered the chicken and it came with fries (the dish not happy hour selection) and that looks more substantial but maybe not worth $32. The drink was sweet (pink lady). Outdoor vibes were cool and def a great spot at the end of 3rd street but probably wouldn't come here for the food. Again, indoor (big tv!!) and outdoor set up was awesome, but food is just okay. Great for large groups but make a reservation!

Parking: They have an adjacent paid parking lot though metered street parking is cheaper since they unfortunately don't validate. Ambiance: Really gorgeous inside, with high arced wooden beam ceilings, natural light through skylights, romantic dim lighting, candles, lots of potted trees for greenery, and velvet seating to add elegance. Even the plates are worth admiring. They have a nice patio with heat lamps for cooler evenings as well. I absolutely love the vibes for date night. I have eaten here four times now and have a reservation ready for my fifth. The menu changes EVERY WEEK and the fact that the ingredients are so seasonal, and the chef really seems to takes pride and passion in creating different dishes so often, keeps me coming back each time. They have done specials from Sunday Night $35 7-course omakase to 50% off Neighborhood Patio nights to $65 for two 4-course date nights and the quality is so worth it. I even came by for an art class hosted on the patio since they hold multiple community events, including sports watch parties. The best yellowtail I've had (including eating in Japan and various sushi spots in LA, OC, SF, and NY) was surprisingly here, at a place I was honestly hesitant to even order sushi from. It's the first time I actually really could taste the flavor as it's more subtle than tuna, salmon, or albacore but they somehow made it incredibly memorable from the freshness. Definitely order the hamachi with pomegranate. I loved the flavor with the ponzu and that it wasn't just the basic jalapeño combo. There was a Singaporean crab garlic butter noodle dish they made once that was incredible though sadly seemed to be on the menu that time only. This was my absolute favorite entree they've offered so far. The gem lettuces Caesar salad is amazing although unfortunately, both times I've ordered it without cheese, they forgot. The boquerones (anchovies) are a gem (ha) that really adds to the salad and I love the texture from the herb crust. Their signature shrimp toast has a good crunch from the sesame seeds and distinct pieces of shrimp rather than mush inside and the ikura on top adds another good layer of flavor. The vegetable curry was rich, flavorful, and savory witbout being too heavy with perfectly cooked potatoes that didn't just hide in the sauce in a way that actually didn't make me miss the meat. The short rib curry had such tender meat and the roti made in house was actually a major highlight for me as it was so flaky, hot, crispy and had an amazing garlic flavor. The chocolate pot de creme had a good orange zest flavor to add to the chocolate and wasn't too rich or heavy though the texture was thicker. The calamari had super crispy batter so didn't associate it as much with a lighter tempura one but the lemons in it and the roasted garlic marinara sauce it came with were so good and added a lot of depth. The butter curry prawns has SUCH well cooked shrimp - flavor was amazing. Miso salmon was good though crispy skin side up would have been better personally. I liked the olive oil flavor in the vinaigrette and the lemon with veggies on the side as well. The tres leches was surprisingly light for a cake and very moist so I enjoyed a lot and the caramel ice cream wasn't overly sweet. The lychee vodka drink is my favorite (came with a drink pairing they offered with Sunday omakase) and the imperial gold yuzu cocktail is better for those who like a stronger drink. The grilled asparagus was cooked to a tenderness with great flavor from the crispy onions on top that have somehow made it among my top favorite dishes here, despite it just being a small side vegetable dish but I didn't like asparagus until this! I would definitely recommend coming here for dinner over brunch personally, as those have been my most memorable bites. Definitely order the yellowtail sashimi, shrimp toast, gem lettuces Caesar salad! Hoping the garlic butter crab noodles, grilled asparagus with crispy onions, and housemade roti reappear on the dinner menu!
