Loved this place. It's actually connected in the back to the park, so perfect for kids! Seafood omelet was delightful. Large chunks of salmon and shrimp and yum hollandaise sauce!!! I came here because a travel book indicated that this was a good spot and was a must try for its historical significance. apparently this was a hangout for hollywood types and part of the movie Good Will Hunting was written at the bar. yes, it's somewhat decent since it's just off the pier but although the food is a decent portion size it isn't that good. tried the sirloin steak (way too fatty) and shrimp and halibut (didn't seem fresh) I would say the food is only passably better than diner fare. it's fair to say this place is getting by on its reputation alone. Also, the dining room is way too dark and the set-up is that of your local bar dining tables. I would drink at the bar but would pass again on the food. read more

Chez Jay is a weathered, wonderful, curmudgeon, jewel of a bar. Loved it, will be back...HOWEVER NOT AFTER 5 pm! This critique is of their little a**#%+*^ of a parking attendant. If the parking attendant wasn't such a little officious, fear mongering creep then Chez Jay would have a full five star review...but as the small parking attendant pointed out "I earn my salary from them" (while showing off his Chez Jay sweatshirt...which breaking news may not legitimize you cause I could go in and buy that from the bar). My guest and I arrive to a fairly open parking lot at 4:30 pm. We have two drinks each and are out by 6 pm...not even two hours. Start to get in the car and the attendant says "tell your driver that'll be $5." I'm sorry? "You can read the sign." Sign says more or less "Parking for Chez Jay. Self parked vehicles must be moved before 5 pm. Vehicles after 5 must pay $5." Now, my friend is recovering from foot surgery and she has a temporary disabled placard...which was on the console although not up in the window because they only have one disabled space which was occupied by a van that was there before we parked (so why display if you're not legitimately in a space but rather right next to it). Even after showing the placard to the attendant he said that we were too late, that it had to be displayed. Then he proceeded to make a big show of taking a picture of our plate and vehicle. He was very belittling and snide saying "welcome back." Huh? We gave him the $5 but asked if we would have trouble coming back he just kept saying "welcome back." We asked for a receipt but who knows if he even deleted the pics because he "have to document everything." Charging someone who has a disabled placard displayed or not, since we weren't in a space that demanded it, is wrong. We weren't anywhere else, abusing the free parking. We were in the establishment we had intended to go into and paid our bill. Get a new attendant or at least have him verify that those parked in the lot are parked there for your establishment before just charging because it's after a time limit. read more

What a horrible place! Went here for dinner tonight. When we walked in, I was immediately pushed to the side by the horrible man at the front. We waited and when there was a seat at the bar, and went to it to grab a drink, and he rushed over saying "you can't sit there!!" I loved our dinner experience here. Haven't been here in so long, and since the patio opened up out back. Props to Chez Jay for surviving Covid and opening up the nice back outdoor space! We had a huge group of 15 and half went outside to the back patio and our group dined indoors, all on a Friday night. Very accommodating! Loved the old school vibes, great energy and we loved our server who had been working there for 24-years! She was ah-mazing and very attentive and funny. Loved it. We started with fries and skinny margaritas/gin martinis. We ordered Steak, Salmon, Wedge & Caesar salads, and more truffle fries! The house red wine is EXCELLENT. Food (3): I had an eggs benedict with some crab meat on it and some bread. Nice fresh seafood. I went here after a hangover so that might of biased me, but I enjoyed my meal there. However in the whole scheme of Santa Monica, it was pretty average for a smaller restaurant. Price (3): Considering the markup because it was in Santa Monica, it was decently priced. Ambience (1): Has the feel of a dive bar. This field takes a hit for the restaurant because I was waiting forever to get my order. Then once I was done, it took them forever to clean up my table and to charge me. And I was at the bar. Like how do you miss me? The person was consistently missing in public or not around the bar. And when he was there I told him to get the check, but I had to do this 2-3 times because he seems to have forgotten. This was the morning and there was very little people there. read more

The p look ace is an iconic giant! From the 50's till even now with the great show Gibraltar starring Billy Bob Thornton. However,it is a dive bar. The bloodymary was perfect but the vodka and soda we had tasted like the glass wasn't washed. So, it's a little dirty in there and the dishwasher delivers the food to the bar. The vibe here is delightfully divey and proud. Locals love this place and everyone is having a fabulous time. Food is great (get the sand dabs!) and service was fine. It's no frills so don't expect to be fawned over like elsewhere in Santa Monica. One server was working all tables, so if you need something don't be afraid to flag him down. What better place to celebrate JayChan's launch of National Lampoon Comedy Radio than Chez JAY??!! There are TWO Jays: one is the 80-year-old owner of the restaurant, who I met yesterday, and the other is my charismatic favorite Yelper buddy with whom I love to hang out on a Sunday afternoon. Yesterday was my first visit to this landmark establishment, although I used to live just a few blocks away! Thank you, JayChan, for introducing me to this charmingly vintage, eclectic, delightful place! I had SO much fun chatting with (& about) the Hollywood set. Chez Jay has been around since 1959. Memorabilia is everywhere. I am told that Marlon Brando proposed to at least 2 of his wives here.....how tacky of him! Other regulars have included Mel Gibson, Henry Kissinger and Rob Reiner. We had seafood salads for brunch: crab leg, shrimp, egg & tomato on a bed of lettuce with delicious sherry (thousand-island-like) dressing, garlic bread on the side. The Bloody Mary topped the one I had at The Abbey - I didn't think that was possible. We later ate peanuts at the bar and were told by the bartender to please throw the shells on the floor....it's a tradition. This gives me an opportunity to relate the famous Chez Jay peanut stories and drop even more big names: James Cameron placed a peanut shell from Chez Jay on the bow of the Titanic! Top that? Sure!! Astronaut Alan Shepard took a Chez Jay peanut to the MOON!! TRUE!! And brought it back.....only to have it stolen later. Holy crap. I can't help but feel that Chez Jay's days are numbered.....the surrounding area has been leveled for redevelopment. While the opportunity still exists I want to go back for dinner (JayChan?) very soon. The steaks looked delicious. Don't ask how long we were in Chez Jay yesterday. Love this funky Santa Monica institution! An ex who was a hot shot in the music industry took me here a couple of times and I also came with a friend for the New Year's Eve party. Always fun times at this Divey Bar/Restaurant. Some celebs that have frequented this haunt have been Frank Sinatra, Drew Barrymore, Sean Penn, Warren Beatty and on and on... So much has been said about this hot spot already but I do have a couple of things to add: #1 TRY THEIR CHICKEN CURRY- $17. Its not the usual as it has has COCONUT, CHUTNEY, and GINGER in it! Absolutely yummy and on the mild side but if you wish, you can order it spicier... A friend from Seattle was in town and he wanted to go to visit a cool place that served food and drinks, is close to the beach and didn't cost an arm and a leg. I could have relied on my Yelp App to figure this out for me (and I did for a second), but I'm impatient so I did what any Yelper would do next, I texted my Yelp friends Sarah & Christopher T for help. They immediately recommended Chez Jay. According to the Yelp reviews I read while en-route, there's a good chance of a celebrity sighting at Chez Jay, and that indeed became the case when I ate there. Right as I sat down, Demetri Martin walked in the door and I had to stop myself from shouting, "I loved you in Taking Woodstock!!!" Fortunately I (and no one else for that matter) didn't badger him and he seemed to have a nice Friday evening with a table full of well dressed indie girls. The service was a tad slow but I suppose that's to be expected when eating on a Friday night at 9pm in a world famous dive bar. The white Russian I ordered was stiff and delish; one was definitely enough. The bread? That was stiff too! Literally. Yuck. I had a chicken Cesar salad and it was great. I was feeling antsy yesterday so I decided to check out Chez Jay, a dive bar on Ocean Avenue in Santa Monica that is rumored to serve up some delicious food. Their signature dish, the butter steak, is a 10-ounce New York strip smothered in beurre aux fines herbes. It was magnificent--tender, perfectly cooked, and drenched in that rich sauce--and a steal at around $29. Chez Jay has been around since 1959, and seems a curious mixture of old-school beach bums, Mercedes-driving silver-haired foxes, and foreigners. (Perhaps, also, Foreigner.) It makes for good people watching. Someone was waiting for his dinner companion, and had brought a bottle of Stolpman "Hilltops" Syrah (an excellent Santa Barbara winery, and probably a better accompaniment to a butter steak than my Bud Lite and Maker's Mark, neat). There was an Australian couple that fell into spirited exchange with another Australian gentleman at the bar. As I was eating dinner, three Russian youths sat to my right and ordered that most American of beers: Corona. There were bowls of peanuts, and peanut shells everywhere. The Stones were playing from the jukebox near the door; a giant preserved fish hung on the wall behind the bar. Was it kitschy? Sure, but kitsch accumulated honestly and organically over the years, not purchased from some wood refinisher in Brooklyn. Chez Jay is across from a motel called "The Hotel California", but unlike that song, Chez Jay deserves multiple revisits. Highly recommended. read more

Update on my bad Chez Jay experience. So I asked the rude bouncer (the one who treated us really badly) about the manager. He said he would go get him. Then he returned and said he wasn't there--but I could call him the next day. I call the next day and am told that Juan, the manager is only there at night. So I call in the evening and I am told that Juan, the manager is only there during the day. So I call the next day and I'm told that Juan, the manager comes in when he pleases--so I left a message for Juan, the manger to call me. Do you think he did? Chez Jay is well known in Santa Monica and it's much more than a restaurant, it a tacky drinking dive bar quasi restaurant. My description is a reflection of the attributes that makes this place so popular. There's nothing bad about that, but it helps to set expectations. This place has the character of a pirate.. Arr! Usually our steak arrives after we had three or four drinks so our food judgement goes out the door. We always order the 'Butter Steak' and my friends always rave about how Chez Jay has the best steaks. I just smile, nod, and keep drinking. Don't worry about what people will think if you drink too much because everyone else is to busy downing their own booze. Never had dinner here without having a strong buzz going and it's always been fun. I mean laughing out loud fun. They should name the place 'Jay's DUI Dive Bar Restaurant' and have the SM Police open a checkpoint in the parking lot to save time. But even being incoherent I still know that it's way far from being the best steak restaurant. Funny, I can never remember much about that 'Butter Steak'..... oh yeah it was good! Wow. That's all I can say about the clearly favorable reviews already posted for Chez Jay. I gotta say this to the people reviewing restaurants here on Yelp - eat the food first, then post. I know we've got a lot of people on those liquid diets out here, but sitting at the restaurant bar for three hours dipping back seven to ten cold frosties and eating a few peanuts doesn't help anyone decide about spending $90 bucks to have a proper dinner at this place. So, like all my Yelp reviews, here's the real poop on Chez Jay. Skip it. I don't care how old Jay is or whether or not he greets you as you enter. I'm not even all that bowled over by the offbeat charm of this place. If you're going to charge $20 bucks for an entree, you'd better have your kitchen get their game on. Took a buddy of mine to Chez Jay in an effort to avoid the typical Santa Monica rip off tourist restaurant - oops, guess what I got? Saw an online review in the Times that was reasonably decent and decided to give it a go. I'd actually been there before for drinks and maybe an appetizer or two, but never dinner. Ordered the scampi pilaf tonight. The waiter gave me the sort of approving nod and cheer as if to let me know I had chosen wisely. The restaurant has an obvious throw-back vibe, so I was hoping for some old-school scampi on top of a big plate of rice. The kind of generous dinner any real Italian kitchen back east would churn out. I just about crapped my pants when the entree arrived. On the plate was a ramekin with 5 or 6 shrimp, immersed in what was supposed to be some kind of scampi sauce. On the outside of the ramekin, sitting on the rest of the plate was a small scoop of what looked like re-heated rice, and a spoonful or two of veggies that had been steamed senseless. The scampi sauce, rather than buttery and garlicky, was just oily. This is one recipe I feel better to NOT know. Oh yeah, and the garlic bread they serve on the table with the meal...tasted dry and stale even AFTER dipping it in the oily scampi sauce. Just another failed attempt to make something on the plate taste good. I think I had this same dish once in college --- when I was eating at Howard Johnsons for $6.95. Chez Jay charged something like $22 bucks for this mess. My friend ordered the NY Strip Steak, cooked medium. He got a well done, tough and chewy piece of meat that I could have bought at Trader Joes and had my sister who doesn't know how to cook prepare more admirably. My buddy had to ask for steak sauce just to try to get the meat down. He also had the scalloped potatoes with it and had nothing nice to say about them. If a restaurant like this can't prepare either of these two dishes well, then I don't need to go back and try the rest. Neither do you. This is an easy one for The Decider; make sure you stop at cocktails if you're heading for the Chez Jay experience. You'll thank me later. read more

You know you really love a place when your roommate's car can get stolen in the middle of dinner there, and you still happily come back. So there we were, this was a few years ago, at the classic Santa Monica haunt, with its red-checked table cloths, drippy candle candlelight, strong martinis, great steaks and ghosts of Los Angeles' glamorous past. (It's rumored to be where JFK and Marilyn Monroe used to have trysts). We were drinking wine. Lots of wine. An inappropriate number of glasses of wine. Why we didn't just get bottles still eludes me. And while we were talking about college ala "Remember that time you fell over that fence outside that bar and broke your glasses?" or "Remember that time we drove away with the gas nozzle still in the car while on our way to Vegas for Fall Break and it was so totally your fault because you accidentally stole a bag of Fritos?" That sort of talk. We must have said the word "Boulder," or "CU," or something of the sort because these two guys came up to us and said, "No way you guys went to Boulder, so did we," and the conversation continued like that. About 15 minutes before that, a valet guy had approached our table and said, "Here are your keys (to two cars, of course, in LA everyone always drives their own car) my shift is over, you can just get them out of the lot yourselves." Oh thank you, thank you, we say. So while we were talking to these guys about college, both sets of our car keys are sitting on the table. Then, mid-conversation, my roommate's head hits the table. Doink. Down. That last glass of wine did her in. So I say to these guys, "Oh, hey, I think I need to take her to the bathroom, nice meeting you." So I help her to the bathroom, and I call her boyfriend and tell him to come get us because she clearly can't drive herself home and nor can I for that matter. When he gets there we go out to the parking lot to get her car, and it's gone. Mine is there. Her's is gone. I tell the owner, or bartender, or both, I can't remember. But they were very nice. They assured me it wasn't the valet guy, he'd been working there for 20 years, he wasn't that sort of guy. So we call the police. We all go down to the station. We give them the car's info, description. They say they can't find any record of the car to which my roommate says, slurring, "Of course you have record of it, you have given me soooooo many parking tickets." To which, I punch her in the side. Then, they find a record of the car. And while we're standing there, filling out paperwork, a cop's voice comes crackling over the radio, "We have a Volkswagen Jetta, Black, yaddi, yaddi, on Arizona Avenue and 6th street." They found the car and asked us if we would be able to do a positive identification of the guys from the restuarnt if we came to the scene. We say yes we think so. So we go to the scene and there is her car, and there are the two d-bags, surrounded by cop cars, handcuffed, sitting on the sidewalk. They both got charged with Grand Theft Auto and one got a DUI. We still wonder if they actually went to college with us. And Chez Jay is still one of my favorite restaurants in all of LA, for its ambiance and old school charm, and because, every time I go there, I always have a good story to tell. read more

Charming Old School establishment, with many charms.... including an old fashioned jukebox (I don't even remember the last time I saw an actual old jukebox!) and the fact that you get peanuts at the bar and you're supposed to throw the shells on the floor (which I KNOW I haven't seen in any place since the early 1980's.... honestly, I assumed that current health codes would have dictated that you're not allowed to do something like this anymore!).... and if you ask the bartender, he will show you a photo of the early 1960's opening night of Chez Jay, which includes showgirls drinking at the bar with an actual elephant! My only gripes are that there was nothing whatsoever vegetarian on the food menu, let alone vegan.... it's to be expected in this kind of place, I understand, but I do get a bit sad when, in the year 2013 in Los Angeles, there isn't even 1 meat-free menu option! Also, the drinks are a bit pricey.... it was $25 for 4 beers, and that was even during their very brief Happy Hour time! I've passed this place so many times in the past (since 2008) and never thought twice about stepping in. One night my bf and I walked in to kill time because we were waiting on our reservation for the restaurant across the street, so we had only ordered drinks. As we sat there, we noticed the food looked delicious, so I always thought one day I'd eat here. Well it only took like another 5 more months before I walked in. My friend and I had took a nice long bike ride and worked up an appetite. By far the best food I've eaten In Santa Monica! I ordered the wedge salad, the steak and shrimp, and the sticky toffee pudding! I had a glass of wine, but their cadillac margaritas are yummy too! Not only was the food super yummy, but their service was excellent! Sure there are peanut debris on the ground but hey, its a dive bar in one of the most upcoming communities in the area! 5 stars all the way and I'm definitely coming back! Keep in mind its in a busy street. You know the place is yummy when its packed ,so definitely call in a reservation! But there is a bar so you can order food there and they have a back of the restaurant open seating area which looked nice too. Especially now since the city built a nice park. Went again this year with the same friends on spring break. Wow, what a difference a year makes. Either I was totally plastered when I went last year or the quality, feel and overall experience took a serious nose dive. Why?? If you go when it is light out, some of the light seeps into the restaurant and you can see why they keep the place so dark. Our waiter was crocked the minute we got there. We don't know what he had been drinking, just that, he had plenty to drink. He got almost every drink order and food order wrong. How do you confuse a manhattan with scotch and soda?? How do you confuse prime rib with chicken curry?? I mean, don't get me wrong, he was a nice guy and all, the alcohol took the edge off our bitterness to a certain extent. Chez Jay...just the cheezy name alone beckons a visit. It's a goldmine of quirkiness, so refreshing in a city where pretending to look important is the status quo. No offense, I'm just observing. This tiny bar could easily exist in rural Alaska, with a dark woody feel and old-fashioned jukebox (what is it about jukeboxes that just puts people in a good mood?) You may even sense that collective turn-of-the-head when the door opens. Hang at the bar, squeeze in a booth, or squish into a table in the middle of the room where you get a 360 view of potential celeb spotting. This is no Chateau Marmont, but I would imagine that cooler, more discreet celebs would hide out at Chez Jay, just to blend in with the commoners. The drinks were stiff . Noted drunk guy in medical scooter doing donuts in the parking lot. Food is overpriced and leaves something to be desired. I had the surf and turf. The steak had a chewy texture not unlike astroturf. Divey and old timey ambiance. I would have given this 5 stars if it was only a bar. read more
