Decent. We started with the eggplant which was good, but oddly some pieces were deliciously crispy while others were mushy. The inconsistency was a bit of a throw off. Flavor was good though I must say. For dinner I had the grilled trumpet mushrooms, which were good as well, but nothing amazing. I am sure we would've been better off ordering the burger, but we weren't in the mood tonight. Service was good. It was a pretty quiet night so I didn't expect it to be bad at all. Our waitress was nice but didn't really provide anything to our meal or experience. Ambience is one of my favorite things about this place. It's super casual and easy which is great to have in the neighborhood. Overall, I'll definitely come back to Chez Nick for an easy weeknight dinner and would recommend it as an easy place to come. Terrific meal and staff, heartily recommend! Came here for a holiday get-together with friends on a Friday night in December. The restaurant was about 85% full, with most of the front and back sections occupied. One of my friends has been here a number of times prior and made reservations in advance. We arrived at 7pm, and it took about 10 minutes for the prior table to be cleared, then we were seated. The inside is decorated like a classic French bistro, whitewashed brick walls, dark wood paneling, floors and furniture, black framed art with some holiday touches like poinsettias, a mini Christmas tree. We sat in the back where two sections of larger tables were set up with partial banquette seating. Staff was prompt, courteous and helpful, giving us time to order and answering our questions about preparations and ingredients (some allergies) for certain dishes. They also checked in periodically on how we were doing. We ordered for food: - Parmesan Fries - chili flake, parsley, dijonnaise $10: a yummy take. Slight crunch on the exterior and Parmesan added an oomph. - Grilled Broccoli Salad - lemon tahina, sumac, crispy shallots, golden raisins, pickled fresno $16: not sure of what to expect here though the broccoli was cooked al dente and the mix of flavors and textures really worked well. - Honeynut Squash - burrata, brown butter bang bang, sesame seeds, fresh mint $18: I still have no idea what "bang bang" is, though the squash was soft, roasted deliciousness. The burrata was fluffy and light. - Crispy Brussels Sprouts - palm sugar vinaigrette, pomegranate, sesame, mint $12 x2: I think this was a mistake that two orders were placed, though they tasted great with slightly charred leaf edges and sweet/sour/salty flavors from the vinaigrette. - The Burger - two smash patties, la frieda beef, american cheese, roasted onions, kosher pickles, special sauce, fries $23: the friend who had been here before strongly recommended and the friend who tried it enjoyed it. - Spaghettoni - spicy pomodoro, fennel sofrito, 24 day dry-aged beef meatballs $25: another recommendation and apparently popular staple item on their menu. Pasta and meatballs were tasty! - Faroe Islands Salmon - caramelized celery root puree, black kale, white beans, sauce verte $29 x2: fish was cooked beautifully, crispy skin and tender filet. Kale, green sauce and beans provided and nice flavor balance. - Market fish roasted branzino filet - black kale, sauce verte $33: also cooked very well, with a similar preparation as the salmon. - Chocolate Chip Cookies with milk $9 x2: baked fresh and served hot, so good we ordered a second one. - Chocolate Mousse - sangria figs $10: interesting flavor conversation between the earthy chocolate and tart sweet notes of fig. Maybe not my favorite combo though the mousse itself was yummy. - drinks: we ordered a few bottles of wine and some separate cocktails and whiskey pours. Overall very enjoyable. Chez Nick was everything and more than what I expected! I've been wanting to try Chez Nick for a long time as every time we walk by, it is always so busy inside and out! They have wonderful outdoor tables overlooking York Ave. Finally today we went! I called ahead to make sure they can accommodate 2 baby strollers as we were going with a friend also with small baby and immediately when I called, the response was absolutely. This already made me feel good about the choice to come here. When we arrived the outdoor tables were full but inside was completely empty! We were able to sit comfortably with 2 baby strollers indoors. For food, I loved their fried chicken sandwich and the burger! Both were delicious. I did opt out of the fries with my chicken sandwich and was able to replace with a refreshing salad! Overall great service, family minded restaurant and delicious food! I've been coming to Chez Nick for a very long time, but realized recently that I had not been back in quite a while. It had honestly fallen off my map, so I decided to return. I was surprised to see how busy it was when we arrived for our 8:15 reservation. We got there around 8:00, the dining room was fairly full, and the evening started off well enough. Our waiter was very nice, drinks were taken promptly, and the appetizers were good, as always. We had the crab fritters and the Nashville hot calamari. The calamari itself was tasty, though I wish the chili oil had been served on the side or used more lightly as a drizzle instead of being poured over it. Unfortunately, things went downhill from there. Before we were even halfway through our appetizers, our main courses were brought out, which immediately made the meal feel rushed. We ended up giving up on appetizers we were still eating because we did not want our entrées getting cold. That was especially disappointing because the mains were not strong. The salmon was clearly overcooked, and the steak had an odd odor and just did not taste right. What bothered me most, though, was how much it felt like they were trying to push us out. At one point, many diners had left, although there were still other occupied tables and people at the bar. We wanted dessert and another round of drinks, but there were suddenly no servers or bartenders to be found. When we finally flagged down the host, he came over and immediately asked if we wanted the check. When we looked confused because we were still planning to order more, he awkwardly pivoted to asking if maybe we wanted dessert, but by then the message was pretty clear. We paid and went somewhere else for dessert and drinks. It is a shame. Chez Nick used to be a place I really enjoyed, but this experience felt rushed, inattentive, and uneven in a way that makes me think this was probably my last visit. read more

Disappointing. The brussel sprouts appetizer was very vinegary. The burger said it came with a brioche bun, but this was unlike any brioche I've ever had; hard and dense. We sat at the bar for a drink and asked about the wine selection, but the bartender was unable to provide any guidance. We initially ordered two glasses of wine and were then encouraged to purchase a bottle for an additional cost, which we agreed to. When the bottle was brought out, the bartender did not offer a taste before pouring. While the wine wasn't terrible, it had an off smell and was not particularly enjoyable. We asked if it would be possible to switch back to being charged for just the two glasses instead. The bartender said no but would check with the manager yet never followed up. When we eventually requested the bill, we were charged the full amount for the bottle without any further communication. We paid, we tipped, we only have 2 sips each per glass and then left. The service was really meh - nice when they came by, but very infrequent and almost impossible to wave over. Service (5/5): We were serviced quickly and often. All our orders were prepared as instructed. We shared an entrée and our server asked to have the burger cut in half for us! Brussel Sprouts (5/5): Lovely crisp to a sweet bite of vinaigrette. The pomegranate seeds gave the dish a nice color! Crab Rangoon Dumplings (4/5): The dumplings were on the small side but stuffed with crab meat. The sweet sauce complimented the rich cream cheese taste. Made a reservation and came ~7pm on Sunday. Ambiance was relatively calm and there were a few tables open. Service was friendly and efficient. Squash and burrata: We started off with our favorite dish of the night. The ingredients were super fresh. The pesto on top provided an extra burst of flavors. Highly recommend. Butternut ravioli pasta: Al dente pasta with flavorful sauce that is mildly sweet, sour, and savory. Very delicious but there were only 4 raviolis . . . I (a female adult) was still hungry after eating it. Big burger: meat cooked perfectly as requested. Fortunately my partner was willing to share his food, so I ate ~1/2 of his fries and was no longer hungry. Split verdict on this bustling neighborhood spot. We originally wanted to sit outdoor on the side street, but there was a really loud exhaust fan upsetting the zen. Then we thought that we would dine indoors, but it was too warm in the dining room. We wound up sitting outdoors on York Avenue. The chairs were uncomfortable. We got past it. We got to Nick's for the last night of restaurant week and ir was an excellent deal. We shared the surprisingly good kale salad and the crispy cauliflower. The dip for the cauliflower was at the bottom of the bowl and hard to get to, but was worth the effort. The hangar steak was delicious. The accompaniments were vividly flavored. We shared creme brûlée and a great brownie sundae. The staff were nice but seemed overwhelmed. Out drinks didn't arrive until after our appetizers and they brought out the wrong appetizer for one of us. The food was great. The restaurant wasn't comfortable and the service was befuddled. Came here for the completely outdoor dining options, we had a family member with strict COVID protocols on eating out. Nomz: The brussels sprouts were tasty as a starter. The place described themselves as American but the pasta was highly recommended by the waiter. I had the spaghettoni, the pasta to meatball proportion was off for my taste, needed more pasta. The dish was trying a bit too hard to be different and wasn't something I would get again. Service: The waiter was excellent, I almost gave this place 4 stars because of it but couldn't. This placed is tucked in such an intimate area. I would have never known about Chez Nick unless a friend of mine suggested it for dinner--and I'm so glad she did! When you enter, the ambiance feels very cozy, intimate and romantic. As soon as I sat to greet my friend, our server welcomed us so warmly! He was extremely friendly and bubbly, which made the experience for me a 10/10. Solid brunch Made a res here for brunch on a Sunday. We went for the shakshuka and the avocado toast which were both well made. Shakshuka came out hot and was well spiced with a side salad and warm pita. Avo toast came with a generous amount of avocado. Solid option for a bite that is close to home with a cozy, neighborhood vibe. The staff are friendly (and really try hard to make sure that you are taken care of) and the fare is very good. The menu is long too extensive but has a good range of flavors and textures, all at extremely reasonable prices for the portions and quality. Overall, we had a great birthday dinner for my husband and, between the 2 of us, managed to order 2 apps and 4 entrees - all of which were quite delectable. - The star of the night was definitely the lobster malfadine which came with huge portions of fresh lobster meat with fresh, al dente pasta in a delicate beurre sauce accented with fresh green peas. I would come back for just this dish alone. - The burger is a smashburger so served medium with 2 patties and it was quite solid. There wasn't anything ruly unique BUT it was definitely a good burger. -The lemongrass pork chop was nicely charred and had a nice spicy kick from the sweet chili. The sauce does seep into the fried rice so that can get a bit too flavorful but the fried egg on top is a good foil for that. - The Amish chicken is fresh and juicy - this one does take a good 30 min to prepare but the other dishes can be nicely cadenced before. - The Jonah crabcake is pure crabmeat - essentially no fillers - and served over a creamy puree. This version is deep-fried with a batter coating so you get a nice crisp (vs some versions that are literally pan fried lump crab meat). - The Little Gem Caesar is made with baby gem lettuce leaves, all perfectly picked and coated with gremolata, dressing, parmesan, and accented with boquerones. The ratio was perfect and this is a nice starter. They also have a good variety of cocktails and mocktails. No draft beers but they had a decent list of bottles. Will be back to try more of the menu since it's so close. Worth a visit. read more

Wow, I really had high expectations of this restaurant but it unfortunately fell short. I walked in, and don't know if it was because of the sidewalks outside being wet from the past snowfalls but I basically twisted my ankle past the host table and while being led to the way to our table. Not a good start. Maybe there should be a carpet there when you walk in to prevent a slippery wooden floor incident? We didn't get any water or get greeted by a waiter/waitress for maybe 10-15 minutes, not the best start again. We got the crab cake, which was pretty good, to start. Then we got the duck and the burger. I would say the burger was definitely very delicious, and I liked it more than the duck. Highlight: For dessert, we got the chocolate chip cookies with milk and WOW those were really good. I've been wanting to try Chez Nick with my family for quite a while, and finally had the chance to stop in this week. It's new-ish to the UES and I've heard such wonderful things about the ambiance and food. Upon arrival we were given the option of indoor or outdoor seating, and opted for indoor because it was a little too hot to sit outside. The indoor space is beautiful with a small bar and lots of tables for different party sizes. The Just Beet It was a delicious cocktail and the roasted carrots as a starter were amazing. The menu isn't labeled with gluten free items and my server didn't seem well versed in allergies or dietary restrictions. I ended up getting the salmon with a gluten free grain (rice as a substitute for the couscous) but the server let me know they were making an exception for me and would not be able to make that substitution in the future. That being said I'm not sure what I would be able to get as an entree if I went back but I would 100% order the carrots again and maybe a starter salad and make that my meal. Overall, a bit pricy and not many gluten free options, but the food is amazing and this is a great spot to go with family of all ages! We really enjoyed our time at Chez Nick! read more

Came here for Saturday brunch after deciding Maison Pickle was too far lol. We arrived around 11:30 am and were seated immediately, the restaurant was a little busy but not insanely crowded or too loud. We opted to sit inside, and the furniture is memorably sturdy and high quality. I ordered the Homemade Breakfast Biscuit Sandwich, which was $17. It consisted of a flaky and soft square biscuit cut in half, with a large sausage patty, fried egg, cheese, and chipotle mayo. The dish also comes with "yukon potato home fries", which seem to be the same as the other home fries on the menu (e.g. for the Soft Scramble). The potatoes were very well seasoned and flavorful with a lot of what I think was parmesan and dried chili peppers. The biscuit was buttery and dense, and the sausage patty was thick. Its the best version of a simple sausage egg and cheese biscuit with potatoes. Imo $17 is a little expensive for the relatively basic ingredients, even if the biscuit is homemade... maybe I don't value brunch very high compared to other meal types... but compared to other brunch places in the area, Chez Nick is actually a pretty good value. I don't really see how much better a sausage egg and cheese biscuit could get. read more

A bit belated review of @cheznicknyc a newish restaurant in my neighborhood. I had the shakshuka and my friend a burger with Parmesan fries. I couldn't keep my hands off of the fries. They were really good. My friend, the burger aficionado loved hers. To my taste, Shashuka was missing something. Maybe a bit more tomato sauce or feta cheese. Or at least hot sauce on the side it may be just that I always forget that sometimes eggs are too eggy for me. But shakshuka is such a healthy meal! Best coffee! Really excellent. My friend and I go Sunday breakfast every week and this is truly among the best coffee I have tasted. Great service and ambience. I would absolutely go back. Not for the shakshuka perhaps.
