    Som tum nuer yang

Finally tried this place during lunch and was impressed with the food. I got the som tum nuer yang (papaya salad with grilled ribeye and sticky rice). I thought the meat was cooked perfectly and the sauce that came with it was wonderful. I love papaya salad and this place makes it right. Very tasty and refreshing. Would definitely come back to try other items.

My BF and I live in LA so while we know Long Beach has a fantastic food scene, it takes some very intentional time to go here and make sure its worth it. Chiang Rai absolutely is worth it and all the hype around it. The restaurant is colorful and service is attentive and wonderful. They specialize in Northern Thai cuisine and I absolutely love a khao soi. It's the perfect answer when someone loves thai but can't decide between noodles or curry. The broth was comforting with the perfect amount of heat, absolutely generous portion sizes for everything. All so flavorful and made such a fantastic lunch. Hope I find myself in LB again so I can try more.

*Note: TDLR at the end of the review Chicken Kao Soi: 10/10 They do not skimp out on the chicken! Broth is a coconut curry broth. It's slightly thick, creamy, super savory with a nicely balanced sweetness. You get a side of lime, green onions, and minced up pickled mustard greens. Lovelovelove pickled mustard greens. This whole dish is so good on a cold or rainy day. Service: 8.5/10 They're very attentive and the food came out in maybe 15 minutes or so. There was this younger guy that was working there. Always had a smile on his face whatever he was doing. Ambiance: 9/10 The interior and their physical menu is so aesthetically pleasing. Street parking only, but I didn't have any difficulty finding anything. I went on a Tuesday late afternoon and it was busy, but not crazy packed. I didn't have to wait to be seated. The seating itself is a little bit tight, but I didn't particularly mind. TDLR: Come here! Worth the money. Portions are great. They don't skimp out on the protein. Seating is a bit tight. Street parking only. Great service.

Food Khao soi with fillet mignon - This is supposed to be their best dish and it was definitely solid with the medium spice. The first bite was too spice heavy but the lime and pickles quelled it perfectly. I prefer Siam Savory. 4.6/5 Pork belly khao soi - This was disappointing. The pork was certainly not fresh nor was the rice. Probably was sitting under a heat lap that wasn't hot enough. The pork was room temp and not tender. 3/5 Thai tea - An excellent elevated Thai tea. 4.6/5 Mango sticky rice - Same as the tea. 4.6/5 Service Solid service and recommendations but not perfect. 4.5/5 Ambiance Solid but a bit too cramped. 4.5/5 Overall it is not the best Thai food I've had but elevated. Pork belly dish was uninspired. Selva down the street has higher depth of flavor and deserves to be packed like this place. 4.4/5 is a perfect rating.

Chiang Rai is a wonderfully charming Thai food spot. There isn't any parking except for street parking and there always seems to be a wait. Make sure to put yourself on the waitlist and they'll text you when they're ready. Their menus display their dishes beautifully with eye catching colors. If you're indecisive, the choice is definitely going to be difficult. Pineapple fried rice was sweet and spicy. Overall, it leaned on the drier side. Khao Soi's curry soup was thick. The fried noodles took time to absorb and held its texture throughout the meal. Thai Tea Pang Ping was delicious. The bread was soft and the filling was a sweet thai tea custard. Cha-som had more of an orange taste over the tea flavor. I'd love to come back and try the rest of their menu! It's a great Thai food spot with plenty of dishes to please everyone.

Enoki mushrooms. Large portion, great when hot out of the fryer.

I've been wanting to come here for ages and finally had the chance to try them out with a friend visiting from out of the US. We went early on a weekday and although we had to join a wait-list when we arrived, we were seated within 15 minutes. The restaurant is small, cramped, and loud which definitely contributes to its vibe. If you're looking for a quiet intimate dinner, this is not the place. If you want a dining experience that has the high energy feel of a popular NYC hole-in-the-wall, this is the place. We ordered the pork pad-thai, mussel curry, and enoki mushrooms. All of the food was good. The enoki mushrooms were amazing hot out of the fryer. But eat them quickly while they're fresh and hot. They lose a little something as they cool. After leaving I realized that we'd been overcharged for the mushrooms. I called the restaurant and they offered to refund the difference, but required me to come back in with my credit card in order to do so. I'm not often in that area during their open hours, so the issue is still unresolved. There was also no apology for the overcharge, which would have made me feel better about it. I will likely return, but will check my bill closely in the future.

If you're looking for great Thai food, look no further than Chiang Rai located in Long Beach. I've been here a couple times now with friends and have not been disappointed. More recently, I tried the Chicken Khao Soi, Nam Tok Ribeye salad, Pineapple Fried Rice, and Fried Gyoza. The Nam Tok salad had some of the most tender bites of ribeye you'll have and then add in the classic thai flavors of sweet, salty, sour, and spicy and you have a very well-executed dish. The Khao Soi was rich and creamy, the noodles were fresh/spring-y, and the chicken was well seasoned. And of course the classic gyoza and pineapple fried rice rounded out a great meal. For those not familiar, this location in Long Beach is little smaller, only has street parking, and may have longer wait times especially at peak hours. But despite all that, there's a reason that people keep coming back again and again to Chiang Rai.

The food is excellent--fresh and well-executed. Highlights include the beef tartare, the branzino, and the curry with soft-shell crab. That said, be prepared for a wait. It was incredibly busy when we visited: we waited an hour, and there were 41 parties in line behind us. Parking in the area is also a bit tricky. Service was stretched thin due to the crowd--there weren't many servers--but the team worked hard to accommodate everyone's requests.

We needed to go here because it was listed on Michelin Guide but quite frankly I have eaten better food in Thai town Service was great though but food price is cheaper that of a Michelin guide restaurant. Though I was happy about not having to wait for a table. We were seated immediately for a party of 3 when we arrived at 12:30 for Saturday lunch. Roti 3/5 was their signature dish because people ordered. However, it is just any I got at Costco. The oysters 5/5 came with amazing sauce of chili lime sauce, chili plate, fried shallot, pungent, not fishy. Thai boat noodle 3/5. I had better one. I asked whether the spicy level is white person spicy or Thai. They said Thai. I chose mild. It was not spicy at all. The soup was too sweet though. Pad thai was very good 5/5. I personally say this is my favorite dish. The sauce is different. I need to leaen how to make Pad thai sauce. It was great, sweet, citrus, saucy but not salty. Khao soi with soft shell crabs 5/5 was a great option that isn't available widely. We were full and basically couldn't even finish. Crispy pork 5/5 was delicious and I love the sour sauce they have. Pork was deep fried in a batter to make it crispy. Overall I enjoy my food because this was a one time try. I would come back if my friends invite me though.

This Thai spot in Long Beach is officially my #1 so far. The hype is definitely real. It does get pretty packed, so I'd recommend coming before the rush but honestly, the food is worth the wait either way. I usually order takeout, but this time we brought my boyfriend's family to celebrate, and it did not disappoint. I had to get the coconut drink, it's the most refreshing thing ever. We were even joking about coming here just for that because it tastes so fresh. We ordered the papaya salad, curry (MUST try!!), pad see ew, a veggie plate, and mango sticky rice. It fed all five of us perfectly. Everything was so good, we were literally watching other tables' dishes and already planning what to try next. The curry in the picture was hands down my favorite...super rich, flavorful, and comforting (if you know the name, get that one!). Definitely coming back to explore more of the menu.

This place is now one of my favorite Thai restaurants! The food was amazing, service was great and staff were very friendly, and place was nice. We ordered fried enoki mushrooms, crying tiger with ribeye, roti with yellow curry, moo ping, chicken satay, papaya salad, soft shell crab khao soi, crispy pork belly with rice and khao soi, mango with sticky rice, and sweet roti with coconut ice cream. Every dish was so good! I can't wait to go back again and try other dishes!

We went to Chiang Rai on Easter Sunday with a group of six and made reservations a few days ahead, which I'd definitely recommend because the place was packed by the time we arrived. I think we were one of the earlier seatings around 5pm, and the restaurant already had a lively, festive energy right out of the gate. The atmosphere here is part of what makes it so memorable. It feels modern and energetic without losing warmth. There's something about the space and the service style that reminded me a little of an old-school Asian coffee house in the best way. Busy, cheerful, comfortable, and full of personality. We ordered family style and honestly everything was excellent. The roti with curry sauce disappeared immediately, and the fried chicken wings with roti and curry sauce were probably one of the biggest hits at the table. We also ordered the beef khao soi, which surprised me in the best way because the beef was served more like rare pho-style beef rather than the usual preparation I'm used to seeing in khao soi. The tom kha was another standout. Light, creamy, full of vegetables and mushrooms, with that perfect balance of coconut richness and chili floating through the broth. We also had crab fried rice that everyone kept going back for. The running theme of the night was everybody trying to politely avoid taking the last bite while secretly wanting the last bite. That usually tells you everything you need to know. Service was excellent throughout the night and everything flowed smoothly despite how busy and tightly packed the restaurant was. Parking can take a little patience since it's tucked into a residential neighborhood, but honestly that's part of the charm. If you have to park a little farther away, the walk through the neighborhood is actually really pretty with flowers, older homes, and a relaxed feel. Just be respectful of the neighbors and don't block driveways. For me, this is the best Thai restaurant in Long Beach.

Are they open on New Years eve? I keep calling but no one picks up.

Their phone number has changed.. it's 562-342-4672

Do they actually take reservations? Every time I call they say they are fully booked. No matter how far in advance.

They do take reservations...... but I've had better thai before. It's solid, but not that great.... overhyped

How's parking? I looked on the map and I don't see a parking lot. Is it only street parking?

Pretty much street parking. Tiny lot behind with room for 4 cars maybe.

Can they accommodate seafood and shellfish allergies (no cross contamination)?

    Probably not

Can you choose chicken breast for Khao Soi?

Yes and it is actually a Thai restaurant. It's listed as a Thai restaurant and when you go to the website it says Thai street food.

    Will Vegans be happy here?

Yes! Most of the dishes can be made with tofu as the protein.

    Do they take reservations?

Hi ! We do take a reservation a few spot on everyday

Do they have lunch specials, and if so, which days of the week and what hours?

Do they use MSG in their food?

    No they don't

How can i make a reservation?

They don't do reservations. It's first come, first serve. You can put your name on the list. We arrived around 5pm last Saturday and waited a little over an hour for a party of 4. Parking is street only and limited so the earlier you go, the better… Read more

Do they take reservations at Chiang Rai?

Are there gluten free options available?

I don't think there's a lot. It isn't specified in a section of the menu, but it will depend on what items you choose. They do have a variety, and I think they would be willing to "customize" some items!

The service from the main owner/manager (female) was by far the rudest I've experienced at this restaurant. When ordering, we were simply trying to explain how we wanted our dish prepared. For certain Thai dishes, there's a big difference between something being fried versus crispy, and we were trying to make sure it was prepared the same way we had ordered in the past. While we were speaking with another server to clarify the order, the manager stepped in, took over the conversation, and rushed the order through right after she clocked in. It felt very dismissive and like we weren't being listened to at all. When the dish came out, it wasn't what we had asked for. When we politely asked how we should properly word the order so it could be made correctly, she became visibly upset instead of simply explaining it. She then took the dish away, and no replacement was offered--nor was there any apology for the misunderstanding. I completely understand that restaurants have many customers to attend to, but we are paying customers as well. After years of making the drive here for a good meal, this experience was extremely disappointing. Sadly, this interaction cost you a loyal customer, and I will not be recommending this location anymore. As far as the ambience, they have no TVs that works, no music playing during dinner, and top it off- There's a huge leak over the bar area coming from the ceiling.

I will say that service can be very inconsistent. From my more recent experiences (multiple visits across the last year or two), I noticed a pattern where the servers are quick to seat you and take your order, but then you don't hear from them again until you flag them down (if you need anything or want to get the check, for example). This Crab Fried Rice was seasoned to perfection the crab was sweet, the fried eggs, green onions and fried onions kicked it up another notch this spicy fried rice was delicious and the best thing I ever eaten in 2026. 20/10 Vegetable Egg Rolls Three egg rolls served with a trio of sauces I asked for something spicy as well. Crunchy on the outside with a filling that was a bit fluffy with onions and veggies. I loved the crispy texture dipped into the sauces all soo different sweet, savory and spicy. 10/10 I ordered water and sprite as my drinks. Basil Fried Rice (made vegan) My daughter had Basil Fried Rice stir fried with onions and basil the seasoning was on point she said it was amazing I had a bite and it was delicious she wants to have this again on our next visit. 20/10 Birthday Dessert They were kind and gave me a desert for my birthday I believe it's called mango sticky rice it was very good and my first time eating that. 8/10 The vibe in this restaurant was chill our server was very nice and made sure we had everything we needed water napkins extra sauces and containers for my leftovers she gave me three sauces to enjoy with my food. . My daughter finished her meal and I had enough for lunch the next day. Overall we had an amazing time at SpicySugar Thai and I'm coming back for the Calamari, whole Fried Fish and Thai Papaya Salad. Our food was a 20/10 meal for sure. And I highly recommend that you try this restaurant. Just me Shawn C.

Delightful dinner and service! Casual spot but the food was top notch. Our server was sweet,…read morefriendly and attentive. We stuck to the basics for our meal, but I thought they were some of the best I've had! Our spring rolls were huge. I usually prefer a thinner, more acidic dipping sauce but their house sauce was actually perfect! I think it was a hoisin based creation. The entrees were well prepared and flavorful, with the perfect amount of spice. The pad thai was delicious, authentically drier versus saucy. Eaten with the curry it was a divine bite. The Panang curry sauce was addictive. Looking forward to trying some of the other menu items! We found a parking spot right in front of the restaurant, and it was a 30 minute but the hostess said it was no problem. There is also a lot nearby that I'm sure patrons of the many small businesses in this neighborhood use.

Checked out S T Noodle Bar today and had a good experience!…read more We were eating with an infant so high chair friendly was a must. We were greeted and helped right away and got a place in the restaurant that fit us well. We ordered the veggie spring roll, tofu soup, beef pad thai and tom yum. The veggie spring roll tasted fresh and the sauce added a nice layer of flavor. Off the bat, the portion sizes for the tom yum and pad thai were VERY generous (from my experiences with Thai restaurants). The pad thai stood out and was absolutely delicious! The service did great with helping us out and attending to our requests. The ambiance was relaxed, and where we sat in the back was cool because there was upbeat music playing loud enough to muffle the surrounding sounds but still soft enough to have conversation at our table without needing to raise our voice. Overall, I'm glad I gave S T Noodle Bar a try! I'd recommend it!
