I found this spot with my mom by chance. We were at Armstrong Garden and wanted something to eat and this showed up on Yelp. The food from the photos looked amazing so we thought this would be a good place to try. We entered and it is quite small. Expect to have a bit of a wait during rush hour. Lucky for us it was just us two, and it was towards the end of lunch. The inside looked super cute and the aesthetic reminded me of the Philippines. They had these cool lanterns, and metal soda signs in Thai. Plus umbrellas below the ceiling. The menu looked really cool, like it was from a newspaper that is colored. The plates had roosters on it. I loved the ambiance for sure. We saw a couple order a few things I asked what they had ordered. One was grilled pork neck and they suggested the Tom Yum Mama Seafood soup and for dessert mango and sticky rice. I also got green thai tea for drink. We got it all mild because my spice tolerant isn't as good as it use to me, and my mom usually tolerates mild as well in regards to spice. The presentation of the food is great. The Soup was so delicious! I'll definitely order again. It had noodles, like thin ramen. The seafood was delicious with the crunchy pork. It blended so well. I love that the soup was sour and spicy. The pork neck was a bit too spicy, and so I believe they might have not prepared it mild. It was a bit difficult to eat because of it, but still really good. This spot has been trending for a while and I completely understand why. First off, there will be a wait so it's best to go during off times. Once you're in though, the wait becomes worth it. Everything has big shareable portions including the apps. The dishes are all super flavorful and cooked perfectly. I'm basic but my favorite was the pad Thai. The noodles were cooked exactly where they should be (not over but not under) and the flavor was just perfect. The tom kha was also surprisingly yummy. Food - authentic and delightful tasting food. The deep fried pork belly was enhanced by spicy curry that just tickled your taste buds. The Khao soi was much of the same goodness. Loved the crunch of the fried noodles juxtaposed to the noodles in the soup which have soaked up the rich flavors of the soup. Before I forget, the papaya salad was a greet start. Refreshing and a lemony goodness on the tip of my tongue. Will be going back sooner than later. Cleanliness- respectable and presentable Service- attentive, but not overbearing. My BF and I live in LA so while we know Long Beach has a fantastic food scene, it takes some very intentional time to go here and make sure its worth it. Chiang Rai absolutely is worth it and all the hype around it. The restaurant is colorful and service is attentive and wonderful. They specialize in Northern Thai cuisine and I absolutely love a khao soi. It's the perfect answer when someone loves thai but can't decide between noodles or curry. The first bite was too spice heavy but the lime and pickles quelled it perfectly. I prefer Siam Savory. 4.6/5 Pork belly khao soi - This was disappointing. The pork was certainly not fresh nor was the rice. Probably was sitting under a heat lap that wasn't hot enough. Chiang Rai is a wonderfully charming Thai food spot. There isn't any parking except for street parking and there always seems to be a wait. Make sure to put yourself on the waitlist and they'll text you when they're ready. Their menus display their dishes beautifully with eye catching colors. If you're indecisive, the choice is definitely going to be difficult. Pineapple fried rice was sweet and spicy. Overall, it leaned on the drier side. Khao Soi's curry soup was thick. The fried noodles took time to absorb and held its texture throughout the meal. Thai Tea Pang Ping was delicious. The bread was soft and the filling was a sweet thai tea custard. I've been wanting to come here for ages and finally had the chance to try them out with a friend visiting from out of the US. We went early on a weekday and although we had to join a wait-list when we arrived, we were seated within 15 minutes. The restaurant is small, cramped, and loud which definitely contributes to its vibe. If you're looking for a quiet intimate dinner, this is not the place. If you want a dining experience that has the high energy feel of a popular NYC hole-in-the-wall, this is the place. We ordered the pork pad-thai, mussel curry, and enoki mushrooms. All of the food was good. The enoki mushrooms were amazing hot out of the fryer. But eat them quickly while they're fresh and hot. They lose a little something as they cool. After leaving I realized that we'd been overcharged for the mushrooms. I called the restaurant and they offered to refund the difference, but required me to come back in with my credit card in order to do so. I'm not often in that area during their open hours, so the issue is still unresolved. There was also no apology for the overcharge, which would have made me feel better about it. If you're looking for great Thai food, look no further than Chiang Rai located in Long Beach. I've been here a couple times now with friends and have not been disappointed. More recently, I tried the Chicken Khao Soi, Nam Tok Ribeye salad, Pineapple Fried Rice, and Fried Gyoza. The Nam Tok salad had some of the most tender bites of ribeye you'll have and then add in the classic thai flavors of sweet, salty, sour, and spicy and you have a very well-executed dish. The Khao Soi was rich and creamy, the noodles were fresh/spring-y, and the chicken was well seasoned. And of course the classic gyoza and pineapple fried rice rounded out a great meal. For those not familiar, this location in Long Beach is little smaller, only has street parking, and may have longer wait times especially at peak hours. I asked whether the spicy level is white person spicy or Thai. They said Thai. I chose mild. It was not spicy at all. The soup was too sweet though. Pad thai was very good 5/5. I personally say this is my favorite dish. The sauce is different. I need to leaen how to make Pad thai sauce. It was great, sweet, citrus, saucy but not salty. It does get pretty packed, so I'd recommend coming before the rush but honestly, the food is worth the wait either way. I usually order takeout, but this time we brought my boyfriend's family to celebrate, and it did not disappoint. I had to get the coconut drink, it's the most refreshing thing ever. We went to Chiang Rai on Easter Sunday with a group of six and made reservations a few days ahead, which I'd definitely recommend because the place was packed by the time we arrived. I think we were one of the earlier seatings around 5pm, and the restaurant already had a lively, festive energy right out of the gate. The atmosphere here is part of what makes it so memorable. It feels modern and energetic without losing warmth. There's something about the space and the service style that reminded me a little of an old-school Asian coffee house in the best way. Busy, cheerful, comfortable, and full of personality. We ordered family style and honestly everything was excellent. The roti with curry sauce disappeared immediately, and the fried chicken wings with roti and curry sauce were probably one of the biggest hits at the table. We also ordered the beef khao soi, which surprised me in the best way because the beef was served more like rare pho-style beef rather than the usual preparation I'm used to seeing in khao soi. The tom kha was another standout. Light, creamy, full of vegetables and mushrooms, with that perfect balance of coconut richness and chili floating through the broth. We also had crab fried rice that everyone kept going back for. The running theme of the night was everybody trying to politely avoid taking the last bite while secretly wanting the last bite. That usually tells you everything you need to know. Service was excellent throughout the night and everything flowed smoothly despite how busy and tightly packed the restaurant was. Parking can take a little patience since it's tucked into a residential neighborhood, but honestly that's part of the charm. If you have to park a little farther away, the walk through the neighborhood is actually really pretty with flowers, older homes, and a relaxed feel. Came here per recommendation of my boyfriend's brother as they are a Michelin star recommended restaurant. First off, they are on the corner of Mira Mesa and Anaheim, so there is no actual parking lot. It is street parking. My boyfriend and I went on a Saturday afternoon and we were seated right away. We were recommended to get the Khao Soi with rib eye, but my boyfriend and I were t feeling soup, so we got the Dry Khao Soi Beef. And for our protein we got Crying Tiger. And of course we got mango sticky rice. I ordered the papaya salad (Thai style). I really enjoyed it. I love the sourness it has. My boyfriend is a newb in trying out foods, and has never tried this and he really enjoyed it. The Dry Khao Soi Beef was delicious. I actually don't like curry, so this is the one curry dish I actually like. For me, the curry isn't too strong. The beef was tender and easy to bite. And I love a good crunch, so the crunchy garlic and crunchy noodles on the side gives it another element of crunch to the soft noodles. The Crying Tiger was very tender. The dipping sauce they gave on the side had a good kick to it. We don't like spicy food, and they were able to accommodate to our dietary request, as per their menu mild is the lowest they go. Yet another great restaurant in Long Beach! My bf and I tried Chiang Rai the other night and became instant fans. Chiang Rai doesn't appear to have a parking lot so you'll have to find street parking which wasn't too hard to find when I went on a Friday early evening. There's no waiting area so if you're there at a busy time, there are chairs outside but no room inside to wait. The restaurant is small so probably not great for big groups. I really love Tom Yum soup and it's usually my go-to order at Thai places. Naturally I had to try it here and it didn't disappoint. I ordered the Tom Yum seafood soup. The broth was a little sweeter than I like but it was extremely flavorful and so satisfying. There wasn't an option to get the smaller size so we went with the larger one. Another bonus of this soup is that it had a variety of seafood from little scallops to squid and I think there was white fish in there. My bf ordered a curry but was so hungry I didn't get take a picture. He did say it was one of the best he's had and was very happy with his choice. Service was also prompt and friendly. A friend recommended Chiang Rai, and wow - it's easily some of the best Thai food I've had in a long time. What I really appreciated was the variety on the menu and not the normal pad Thai and pad see ew, which made the experience feel more authentic. I ordered the Kua Prik Kuar (crispy pork with rice), and it was absolutely delicious, perfectly crispy, flavorful, and satisfying. I also shared the midnight chicken with friends, and that itself was so good. The roti was so crispy and melts in your mouth. Came here on a Wednesday for lunch and they were packed! Fortunately, we didn't have to wait. We got the pork larb and khao soi noodle soup with chicken. I loved the khao soi. It was very rich, but the onions and picked mustard that comes on the side helps make it less heavy. I first heard about this restaurant from a chef's best restaurant in LA list from Attagirl on IG. Currently there are two locations - one in Long Beach and one in Tustin. this is literally my favorite thai spot ever like i will go through the struggle every single time and it's still worth it. just a heads up! it's kinda hard to get a table. parking is annoying (street parking only), and there's usually a wait. BUT if you go during lunch it's way easier. my strategy: put your name down and then walk across the street to the comic book store and chill there. when they call you, run back and get ready for the best thai food of your life. the food is insane. like actually so good. and their spicy is REAL spicy... not fake "white people spicy" lol so be careful. one random note, the papaya salad is sooo much better when you order it on its own. when it comes in a combo/platter it tastes kinda muted? maybe the portion is smaller or something idk, but just trust me and get it separately. overall, even with the parking and wait, i love this place so much. always worth it. read more

Chiang Rai is my go-to Thai spot whenver I'm visiting the Long Beach. There is always a wait time everytime I go, so anticipate about 30-45 minutes. There is plenty of street parking available, just make sure to check the parking signs. My go-to is the Khao Soi Noodle Soup w/ Ribeye Steak. The curry is so flavorful and steak is tender. I also tried the Midnight Chicken w/Roti and Yellow Curry and it was delicious as well. The roti is very flaky and goes well with the curry. I definitely recommend giving Chiang Rai a try if you're in the area! read more

Four Michelin stars speak for themselves. Honestly, the food took me straight back to the streets of Chiang Mai. I got the chicken Khao Soi and wow, such a crazy burst of flavor. It's about $18, which is actually pretty reasonable for a Michelin spot. The place is small and super cute, but that also means it can get packed and there's usually a wait. Portions were large and generous for a Thai restaurant, which is not typical. Fried rice was a little bland and forgettable. Pad see ew was very sweet, had lots of dark soy sauce, noodles were tender, but the beef was a little tough and overcooked. The stars of the show were the midnight fried chicken with roti and the Khao Soi with rib eye beef. The roti is light, airy and buttery at the same time. We got the midnight chicken instead of the fried chicken/curry combo because you get more chicken in this order and we were already getting the Khao Soi. The midnight chicken is perfectly fried, light, crispy, juicy and tender. Khao soi was rich, creamy, spicy and delicious. It could have used more lime and pickles. I have not really had much Thai food in my life I'll be honest. I came here on a limb and it has the cuuuuuuutest, intimate setting inside. Just a little TOO intimate... I felt like I could eat off my neighbors plate because it was so tight together. Not good for a first date unless you want everyone in your business hehe. I ordered their shrimp fried rice. I kept it pretty basic. Even with a basic dish, it was extremely flavorful. I especially loved that their rice was not sticky or short grain. It was just the right texture and grain length. The shrimps.. MASSIVE. a mammoth of shrimps. I loved them. The rice wasn't overly salty or anything either.. she was amazing. I had leftovers and gave it to my dad. backstory my dad is the pickiest person on earth with food, even my cooking at times. but he LOVED this shrimp fried rice. I definitely would love to come back and try some of their other dishes as well. Parking is on the street, which can fill pretty fast... I mean it is Long Beach. Second visit here. Staff is great. All friendly. It's a small space so wait times can be an issue at times. I promise worth the wait. We ordered the Pad See You, Thai Fried Rice, and the Khao Soi. Pad See You 10/10. Savory and slightly sweet. Delicious. Thai Fried Rice 5/10. This fell short in flavor for me. I had to add a bunch of chili to it. Adding a different protein probably could have helped with changing the flavor of the dish. Khao Soi 10/10. This curry dish was hands down the best dish I've had here. I highly recommend if you're a curry fan. I plan to come back and order it with meat versus tofu. Even with the tofu this dish was phenomenal. My only complaint would be I feel like they have small portions on the Pad See You and Thai Fried Rice. read more

New favorite SoCal Thai spot... Been wanting to come here for a minute, and from the first bite, we weren't disappointed. First and foremost, the oysters are a must! One of the best I've ever had from a sauce and texture perspective. Soft shell Khao Soi was incredible, with the perfect level of spice (we ordered spicy) and full of flavor. The Roti Combo was bomb. Roti was super soft and flaky, and combining it with the wings was giving a Thai version of a chicken and waffle. We also got the steak salad and a Thai green iced tea, both good. Service was great, and the wait was only 25-30 minutes on a Saturday night, so we got lucky, and the overall decor inside was super cute. My third visit to Chiang Rai was as amazing as the first two. We were seated immediately as the lunch rush started. This spot is packed, but the service and food are immaculate. The interior is aesthetically pleasing and my favorite Thai dish has become Khao Soi. We also ordered Moo Sahm Chan Tod Nam Pla (fried pork belly) and Panang Curry with beef. Everything was fresh and packed full of flavor. They've been featured in the Michelin Guide four years and running. If you visit, you'll understand why. read more

I went on a Saturday around 4:30 and it was not packed, but by the time I left, most of the tables were already taken. I was greeted immediately and sat at a two person table. They brought me my water within seconds of sitting down, and my server was very attentive. There were so many things on the menu I wanted to try, but I can't eat that much so I just decided on two items. I always love me some pork so I decided to try the Issan sausage. It was very mediocre. I would not actually recommend anyone get it. The price is pretty expensive for the quality of sausage. Also, I personally felt there were a lot of other random items on the plate. It came with carrots, cashews, some type of pepper, and garlic cloves. The carrots were good. The sausage itself was very dry and lacked flavor. The star of the show was the Khao Soi with softshell crab! That curry broth was extremely savory and the temperature was perfect. It was definitely enough to share with someone, but I loved every bit of it. It also came with lime, red onion, green onion, and one more item that I can't remember. I would definitely recommend this dish and I'm sure it would be good with any other proteins. Overall, price point was good seeing that this is a Michelin restaurant, but for me price point depends on the quality of food and the Khao Soi was worth it. I will definitely be back to try more, so glad to have this hidden gym in my neighborhood. read more

One of my coworkers who loves Thai food introduced us to this place/location so we went to check them out last month to mix up our rotations of the Thai food restaurants in DTLB. We drove here from DT because it's quite a bit outside of DT. Apparently, it is pretty famous and they have other locations too, in the OC. They are known for their Northern Thai food dishes and for their Khao Soi. I am more of a boat noodle person because I'm not a fan of curry. I feel like you need to be in a mood to be craving Khao Soi, and even when I do, I always want to switch the default egg noodle to the rice noodles. Anyway, we all ordered different dishes, crispy pork belly, pad see ew, Khao soi, and for me, the boat noodle. I asked if I can get the big noodle and they told me they can't! Which is strange... I did not ask to change or alter the dish just the noodle only, but still they could not do. If you do any kind of cooking, you know for noodle soup, you make the noodle separately so why can't they just put in the bowl a different noodle for me? Okay... So, if you are into boat noodle, theirs here is on the darker broth side, which means they use a lot more blood in the broth. Also, they only offer wagyu beef. I have a lot of boat noodles, all versions, everywhere, and I found that I like the cleaner version instead of the thick rich full blood broth soup. Plus, the wagyu in the boat noodle here did not stand out because other flavors and textures already were overwhelming. So, I think I would rather have the normal beef boat noodle and not needed to pay extra for the wagyu, because it was underwhelming. Overall, it was decent, a bit too rich for me plus I'm not a big fan of small rice noodles so, I would not order this again here. (it's kind of like having spaghetti with the wrong kind of pasta...) My boss' crispy pork plate looks good. I think I would come here again to try their other dishes because they all sound yummy.. But would I make the long trek from where we work to here again on my own? Prob not, only if it's going to be the majority vote for us :) read more
