Spicy Sugar is one of our regular neighborhood takeout spots, and part of the appeal is how personal it feels. The owner is often the one serving the food, which always gives me the feeling that someone is handing me dinner from their own kitchen. We've eaten in the restaurant, which is a quaint little place for people-watching along Broadway, but usually we order takeout and bring it home. Everything is always packed with care: sauces sealed, nothing spilled, and hot and cold items arriving exactly as they should. It sounds minor until you've ordered enough takeout to know it isn't. This time Billy ordered his usual (fresh!) crispy duck spring rolls, and I had the combination pad see ew at medium spice. The spring rolls were generously filled with pork and crisp vegetables and came with plenty of sauce. The pad see ew was exceptional. I've spent quite a bit of time in Thailand, mostly around Bangkok, and this is the closest I've had outside Thailand to the pad see ew I remember eating there. The noodles had the slight sweetness the dish should have, but it never became sugary. The heat was present without overtaking everything else. The shrimp were large, plentiful, and perfectly cooked. They've also always been accommodating with special requests. They used to offer a green curry noodle dish that I loved, and they were happy to add extra curry sauce when I asked. The only real nuisance is parking. This stretch of Broadway can be difficult, and the bike-lane configuration makes stopping briefly for pickup awkward too. Walking is ideal if you live nearby. Otherwise, delivery may be easier than circling for a space. Spicy Sugar feels like exactly what a neighborhood restaurant should be: friendly, personal, reliable, and capable of sending you home with food that tastes as though someone cared while making it. read more

After returning from a weekend away, we decided to give Spicy Sugar another try. We usually dine at Charm, where the owners know us well and always make us feel welcome, but their air conditioning had broken down during the heat wave, so we thought we'd try somewhere else. We were greeted promptly, but the dining room felt a bit neglected. Several tables had not been cleared, the air conditioning didn't appear to be running despite the hot afternoon, and we were initially seated at a table that was only partially cleaned. It looked like someone had spilled water on it. There were only two staff members working and they were juggling several tables, so we understood they were busy. We ordered: * Satay Chicken * Chicken Fried Rice * Shrimp Pad Thai * Fried Squid * Green Curry with Crispy Pork After cleaning our table, our server brought out wonton chips and struck up a conversation, asking where we were from. I told her we were locals and that our third guest was visiting from out of town. She then asked what kind of Asian we were and commented that we looked Filipino. I explained that I am Taiwanese. While I don't think there was any ill intent, the question felt awkward and unnecessary in the context of dining. The fried squid arrived first. It was ordered from the more authentic menu, and the squid had not been cleaned internally. That may be authentic, but it would have been helpful if this had been explained beforehand, especially since one member of our party wasn't familiar with the dish. The flavor was decent, although it tasted slightly over-fried, as if the oil could have been fresher. The satay chicken was our biggest disappointment. It was extremely dry. When we asked about the preparation, the server explained that it was fried first and then grilled, which probably contributed to the overcooked texture. Chicken breast is unforgiving when overcooked, and unfortunately that was the case here. The peanut sauce also lacked the rich, balanced flavor I would expect from a satay. Next came the chicken fried rice and the green curry with crispy pork. The fried rice was under-seasoned, and once again the chicken was dry and overcooked. The green curry had good flavor but leaned much sweeter than I prefer. The crispy pork tasted as though it had been prepared elsewhere and reheated, leaving it on the verge of being overcooked. The shrimp Pad Thai arrived last. Like the curry, it was noticeably sweeter than expected. The shrimp itself was cooked well, but by this point most of the meal had already fallen short. Our server never checked back to ask how everything was or whether we needed anything else. We usually take leftovers home, but this time we decided not to. This was my second visit. The first time I gave the restaurant the benefit of the doubt because it was Pride weekend and exceptionally busy. This visit, however, confirmed my impression. Between the uncomfortable conversation, the lack of attention to the dining room, and several disappointing dishes, I don't see myself returning. read more

After nine years and my frontal lobe fully developing, I can recognize Spicy Sugar for exactly what it is - a local authentic Thai restaurant with great service and even better food. They're consistent, every time we go or order takeout the food is solid. Our favorites are the pork Thai bbq skewers, Panang curry with chicken, and chili basil beef. I kept seeing advertisements from Spicy Sugar Thai on my Facebook and knew I had to stop by. Located in the heart of downtown Long Beach on a busy street with limited parking. We circle the block a few times eventually returning to my house and catching an Uber to the restaurant. It's my birthday and a perfect day to celebrate with good food. Walking in we are presented with an authentic Thai restaurant the staff are welcoming and seat us right away. The menu is vast and there are many options everything I see looks interesting and delicious. I already know what I want, my vegan daughter checks out the menu and here is what we ordered. Crab Fried Rice I chose Crab Fried Rice and asked them to make it spicy. This Crab Fried Rice was seasoned to perfection the crab was sweet, the fried eggs, green onions and fried onions kicked it up another notch this spicy fried rice was delicious and the best thing I ever eaten in 2026. 20/10 Vegetable Egg Rolls Three egg rolls served with a trio of sauces I asked for something spicy as well. Crunchy on the outside with a filling that was a bit fluffy with onions and veggies. I loved the crispy texture dipped into the sauces all soo different sweet, savory and spicy. 10/10 I ordered water and sprite as my drinks. Basil Fried Rice (made vegan) My daughter had Basil Fried Rice stir fried with onions and basil the seasoning was on point she said it was amazing I had a bite and it was delicious she wants to have this again on our next visit. 20/10 Birthday Dessert They were kind and gave me a desert for my birthday I believe it's called mango sticky rice it was very good and my first time eating that. 8/10 The vibe in this restaurant was chill our server was very nice and made sure we had everything we needed water napkins extra sauces and containers for my leftovers she gave me three sauces to enjoy with my food. . My daughter finished her meal and I had enough for lunch the next day. Overall we had an amazing time at SpicySugar Thai and I'm coming back for the Calamari, whole Fried Fish and Thai Papaya Salad. My friend and I randomly decided to try Spicy Sugar Thai a while back and here's my verdict: The ambiance of the place was cute but tiny. A huge con was that they don't offer any restrooms which is inconvenient if you want to wash your hands prior to your meal. The service was also below average; the girls working there seemed unenthusiastic to be there and I felt like the overall service was slow. The food was honestly mid as well. The only thing I could say was good was their crab wonton appetizer but that's really about it. I ordered their Tom Yum soup with chicken and it left a lot to be desired. The broth was too sweet for me and the chicken was a bit rubbery. Overall, I wouldn't be back as there's a handful of local Thai restaurants with better quality of food and service. read more

I've come so many times since moving to Long Beach and always bring someone new with me. The food is great and the service is great. I always get the panang curry and Kat and Aei are wonderful. I placed a pickup order through Toast on the 4th of July, drove to the restaurant and found it was completely closed. The next day, I called and the restaurant acknowledged they had been closed and told me to request a refund through Toast. After waiting about a week, Toast said they couldn't issue a refund because the restaurant never responded. Unfortunately, I paid for food I never received and still haven't been refunded. It's not about the money...it's about making things right when a customer pays for a product they never get. But the food is fire outside of this fiasco. read more

I'm always up for some good Thai food. Found this place on Yelp as well as a referral from someone's who's been. It's not a big place and there's street parking. The ladies working were all very sweet and friendly. The menu does have a good amount of Thai dishes as well as a few others dishes. Dipping sauce and the wonton chips were brought out while we were looking through the menu. Started off with the pork skewers which were quite good. Three sticks with dipping sauce. The meat was tender and cooked well. Also had the papaya salad Laos style. That ended up coming after the other dishes which usually it's served before. Also had the panang curry which they already added the side of rice too. And the ramen in a tom yum soup, which I've never had that version. Had it with pho rice noodles before but never ramen. It was quite tasty and the seafood portion was quite nice. Overall, staff were very friendly and sweet. Food was good but heads up with the spice level. We ordered medium for the papaya salad but it was way hotter than that. Still good but when your mouth is burning it's a different taste. I love spicy, but it was spicy. Only downside, there was no restroom available. A few people had asked about it, which they declined on. They should at least have another options for the customer. This is used to be our favorite place until Today I went to eat with my sisters after I didn't go for a while , we decided to order Tum lao ruam, Crying Tiger and Pork nam tok. The taste of food are different from previous, Tum Lao Raum is very sour and Pork Nam Tok is very very salty. More than that when we ask for the check I review the check and we found out that the price doesn't match with the menu for Tum Lao Raum on the menu is $20 and Pork Nam Tok is $16. But on the bill the price are $25 and $18 for both items. I felt this is not right. I asked the server she just said probably the price is raised up but she can't do anything, on my side you should tell the customer that the price is changed not just let them order and scam their money. At least you should show the reaction to help the customer to resolve the problem. Anyway by the picture Tum Lao Raum, it supposed to come with clam but today it came with only 3 mussels. read more

Came here with a friend the other day. We ordered chicken pad thai, chicken pad see ew and vegetable Thai fried rice for entrees. Then got a side of panang curry sauce. All dishes were good, especially the fried rice. They give you a complimentary wonton crisp snack. The staff was all super friendly. If you like authentic Thai food, this is the place you need to check out. Small hidden gem restaurant along Broadway street in Long Beach. Parking can be challenging to find in the neighborhood streets, but we got lucky finding one upon arrival right in front. Very compact restaurant, but service and food were amazing worth to dine in. I had ordered the Long Beach Pad Gai which is a lighter version of Pad See Ew without Chinese broccoli. Very tasty packed with good flavors. It was topped with bean sprouts and dried garlic, which I had never tried before in this dish. There were other great options on the menu, but already stuffed with the generous portion given. Therefore, didn't try anything else except we were also served some crunchy wontons with three sauces. Nice starter for your meal. I would revisit to try out the other dishes. read more

I came to Spicy Sugar last night with my partner when we were in the Long Beach area. I'm so glad we decided to stop here! As soon as we walked in, we were greeted with smiles and told to pick whichever seat we want. The server very promptly brought out water and these amazing, little wonton crisps with three choices of sauces. The green spicy sauce was my favorite to dip the crisps in. For starters, we ordered the green curry dumplings and the duck spring rolls. The dumplings came with veggies on top and a green curry sauce. The sauce on the dumplings was to die for. The duck spring rolls were light and tasty; and the sauce to dip the rolls in was delicious as well. For our main, we ordered the panang curry with chicken. I really enjoyed the flavor of this dish and how it had pumpkin in it. Their portions are generous for a dish, so I was both full and satisfied by the end of the meal. The service here was wonderful. Every server was so friendly and hospitable. The servers stayed on top of their game, throughout the entirety of our meal, from refilling our water to making sure we had to-go boxes, I loved everything about the interior design of spicy sugar. The picture of the girl on the wall was pretty, as well as the plants, the elephant decorations and the artsy display of garlic on the wall. I'm excited to come back and try their pad kee mao, duck larb, the Thai curry dog and their mango and sticky rice. All their dishes looked so yummy. I was getting off a flight at LGB super late and needed some Asian food after spending a week on a cruise. This place was one of the only Thai places we saw open. PARKING: Decent sized lot WHAT I ORDERED: * Dry tom yum noodles with beef, medium spciy * Crispy duck rolls * Namtok pork, medium spicy * Thai iced tea FOOD + DRINKS: Dry tom yum noodles were so unique, super flavorful though a tad bit salty. The crispy duck rolls were AMAZING, like a typical fresh spring roll, but the crispy duck really made it special. The namtok pork was good, but a little bit tough. The Thai iced tea was pretty standard, though a bit sweet and could be a bit more flavorful. SERVICE: We came about an hour before closing, and they said it was takeout only, so keep that in mind. Otherwise, they were super kind and were happy to help us VIBES: Pretty small place and pretty casual. We weren't able to dine in but I could see this being a nice place to catch up with some friends or for a date night. BOTTOM LINE: Pretty solid. I was pretty blown away by how unique the menu items looked, so I definitely want to come back to try some more things, like the Pad Thai Meltdown. This place is great! We ordered the green curry dumpling appetizer, crab rangoons, Panang curry, and a noodle dish. The dumplings were extremely flavorful and the curry that they sat in had a nice spice profile. The panang curry was on the best I've had. The combination of spices and slight saltiness is an an excellent blend of flavor. The price point is what I would expect for a tamagotchi restaurant but feels more than justified with how yummy the food was. It's pretty hard finding some asian food open past 9pm in Long Beach but Spicy Sugar Thai was fun later night option in long beach (last call for dine in 10:30). I love how the place was decorated vibrantly but also felt homey-- a perfect place for a catch up with friends. We got the crispy duck rolls, dry tom yum noodles and larb salad. All the flavors were as vibrant as their decorations. I particularly enjoyed the tangy and smokiness of the larb salad-- a must get for me. The tom yum noodles/pasta was rich and savory but just a little too sweet for me (adding a lime would help). We got medium spice for this but felt we could do spicy to extra spicy next time. The crispy duck rolls were the perfect start and ending to our meal, giving us a satisfying and umami crunch and the duck was not gamey at all. The worker, which I am pretty sure was the owner, was super sweet and offered us free thai teas too. I would definitely come back to try more dishes.
