We snagged a spot on the patio (life of a dog owner) and ordered a meal family style. My picks included the crab cakes, pad see ew with chicken, and the mango sticky rice. If mango sticky rice is on the menu, there are zero doubts I'm ordering it. Not all MSR's are created equally, but this Manaow's is absolutely delicious. I also loved their pad see ew and was pleasantly surprised by the crab cakes. The whole meal was incredibly tasty and the service was very attentive. People have been telling me about Manaow for years. Now I understand why. It's just really good Thai food for a really fair price. I came for lunch on a weekend. They have a regular menu, a lunch menu, and a "taste of thailand set menu". Most of the "set menus" were around $25 and they came with 2-3 dishes. Went with their Chiang Mai set, which came with Khao Soi with shrimp, crispy pork belly, sticky rice, and some pickled vegetables. I really appreciated that the flavors of these dishes were assertive, that we didn't really have to ask them about spice levels, and the balance on the dishes were perfect. I also ordered a "moo ping" (pork skewer) appetizer plate, which came with sticky rice and sauce. It's a delicious appetizer. Skewer was Sweet, tangy, and meaty and the sticky rice was chewy. I'd highly recommend it. I love that, with their set dishes, they give you the opportunity to taste a few items from various regions of Thailand for a really reasonable price. While service is friendly and great, docking a star for the wait... there's always a decent wait when dining in (pick-up is better!) but today in particular was a little too much. Walked in at 11:15 (they open at 11 and we were the first there), our food was served at 12:15pm.. 1hr is the longest wait we've had over at Manaow. They have a big selection of Thai dishes with your common comfort food. Being Hmong, I noticed a lot of familiar dishes. The food was flavorful, well balanced, and flavorful but small portions. Staff were a bit slow at times but still friendly and helpful. Parking is a bit tight but there's also street parking. I really liked the drink sampler teas, that was awesome and the drinks all tasted good, and we were able to pick one that we get a full serving. Tried this place on a Tuesday evening and was seated quickly. The food took a bit of time to come out but it was super yummy. The herbed fish was flavorful and unique. The portions and prices were pretty standard. The menu had lots of options and the parking was decent considering it's near the beach and other establishments. The interior was really cute and spacious. I enjoyed the southern style curry noodles and my friend enjoyed the green curry. My only note is that the next day I was eating my leftovers and there was a piece of plastic in it. I don't know how it got in there but it was quite alarming. From the North and South Noodles to the (requested) North extra fried chicken wings, Succulent fried fish that was dry at all and the fried pork with two sauces while all washed down with a refreshing drink... This place was actually amazing! Tucked off in a tiny strip mall, my cousin told me I had to try this place and it didn't disappoint. My server as well let me know his recommendations as he started with the first "popular" but I had to shut that down for only authentic and not what everyone eats. This is not only possibly the best Thai place that I've tried outside of Thailand, but one of the best food joints I've been to in a long time. We got the grilled shrimp as an appetizer and it was a 100% the best shrimp that I ever had. Couldn't figure out what was different about it but it was from gods :) Everything in the set menu was also great - I got the Southern Thailand set, which at the time came with a mussels Panang Curry and the mussels were huge, I've never seen anything like that. The curry was great and so was the chicken. It also came with roti bread, I had no idea that Thai people make bread. I really enjoy coming to Manaow -- the food is consistently flavorful, well-executed, and satisfying. I was a bit surprised to see some negative reviews, especially around "authenticity." Our son's girlfriend recommended this great place. We ate there with some friends and we were all glad we did. It is located in a little shopping plaza and is very unassuming. We walked in and were greeted warmly. They prepared our table and we were seated right away. We noticed the modern and nice interior immediately. One downside is that it's in a small parking lot of the restaurant, liquor store, and a a laundromat so can be tricky... First timer! Stopped by for lunch last week with my sister. Got sat within 2 mins so that's always nice. Terry came over to help us after he sat us and broke the menu down so well that I think I switched my order up 3 times. He was patient enough to genuinely explain and answer my sisters questions. Our group of three had a wonderful dining experience for a Thursday lunch at Manaow: great modern dining room, attentive service, and attractive and great tasting food. Highly recommended when searching for modern Thai cuisine dine-in around the Long Beach area. Manaow (meaning 'lime' in Thai) was recommended by a Yelp friend, so made a note of it and was finally able to drop in for lunch with my wife and her mom. It's located in the Belmont Heights neighborhood, and is situated in a small strip mall (with angled parking) next to a laundromat. There is no restaurant foot traffic here: people are coming here to explicitly dine at Manaow. The inside is beautifully modern, with high industrial ceilings and plenty of space between tables and booths. It got busier towards the end of our stay, and noticed how loud it was inside as folks had escalating conversations. They have a paper sign-up sheet where you write down your name, and hope that somebody from the inside sees you and calls you in. They have been open for 10 years so it must work for them, but its awkward for a rule-obeying customer to decide what to do if nobody calls you in immediately. I've noticed some other older restaurants use the same paper system...just wish they would always have someone manning it, get rid of it when not busy, or convert to a electronic queue system. They have a decent sized menu, including one specifically for lunch and a set menu. I don't get the opportunity to dine with my wife (not a fan of fish sauce, lemongrass, or curry) much on Southeast Asian cuisine, so decided to order a little too much so I could sample (in case this was my only visit). The waitress was prompt, giving us a carafe to refill our own water. The ordered food soon came out in the order of preparation, and all of it was very good. Drink Sampler ($10) - neat flight! Five shot glasses, each filled with two ice cubes and a sample of thai iced tea with cream, thai iced coffee with cream, limeade, lemongrass tea, and tamarind juice. One then can choose their favorite to come in a full size, included. It's a unique idea, especially when dining with a group that doesn't mind sharing from the same container. My wife's mom chose the thai iced coffee, saved for the following day. Papaya Salad ($12.5 for lunch) - served in an earthen ware, with a side of sticky rice. I swear it tasted better because of its container. I like shredded green papaya as prepared in Filipino acharya, and these shreds had the same consistency and crunch. I wouldn't eat it just by itself, but as a side to the other dishes, was perfect...similar to the function of Korean banchan. Moo Ping ($12.50 for lunch) - four small sticks of grilled marinated pork, with bowl of sticky rice and a vinegary dipping sauce. The meat was tender with a sweet glaze, similar to a Filipino pork bbq. My wife really enjoyed this, and would be the basis for her subsequent future meals here. Mixed Fried Rice ($17) - since we weren't sure if everyone would like the sticky rice, went with an "all-the-meats" (chicken, beef, shrimp) along with tomato, onions, and eggs. It was expertly prepared, with large whole shrimp and was a great side for all of our dishes. Hat Yai Set ($22 for lunch) - the best Thai 'bento' box I've ever eaten. It consisted of two expertly fried chicken pieces (leg and thigh), yellow curry with potato (runny...would be disappointing if standalone dish, but great as a dip for bread), jasmine rice topped with fried shallots, and a surprisingly complicated roti (maybe the best I've eaten..very flaky, with layer after layer of thin dough...almost like...my wife remarked it reminded her of french cooking). The chicken was excellent: the batter was pretty flavorless (that's what the vinegar dip is for), but very crunchy and the chicken underneath was super moist. If eating by yourself, a set meal (or two) is definitely the way to go....all the dishes melded together so well, and clearly showcased the chef's skills. We were stuffed, so no dessert. Payment was taken at the table, with the receipt going to my phone. The food was the star here, and for me, will be worth future visits to try their different dishes, especially with the distinct presentation of each dish when dining in. Was a little embarrassed that I didn't know this had been here for 10 years...there just doesn't seem too much current online buzz that I noticed. Is this what James Beards means by their classics award (a family owned restaurant open for at least a decade with timeless appeal)? This hipster-themed Thai restaurant serves Thai street food. The restaurant has a cool, contemporary vibe. Their portions are small to medium (by US standards), but who needs big portions if the food tastes good? I love that their menu features a large assortment of Thai street food. Where else would you find Chicken Wrapped in Pandan (and they use real pandan leaves), Herbed Fish, and Tamarind Eggs? For those who are looking beyond the usual appetizers at a Thai restaurant, I highly recommend trying out the items under their Snacks & Street Food section. Taste-wise, the street food items range from decent to good. For example, the Chicken Wrapped in Pandan was good. The chicken was juicy and tender. Taste-wise, the chicken chunks didn't pack a punch. The fragrant Pandan leaves need to complement the chicken; that's why the chicken is wrapped in the leaves. I hardly tasted the Pandan. It wasn't due to the lack of trying; however, getting good, fresh Pandan leaves in the US is notoriously tricky. I liked their Kao Soi, and it tasted good. It was nothing extraordinary, and it tasted similar to the same dish at other restaurants. Growing up, I loved eating Duck Noodle Soup, and I was so elated when I saw the dish on the menu. The dish is ok (for me) because I was comparing the dish to my childhood memories. The duck meat was okay. But I'm never able to get good duck meat in the US. Compared to Europe and Asia, the duck meat found in the US restaurants (maybe except for high-end ones) isn't that good (texture and taste-wise). Because of this, good duck dishes in most US restaurants are hard to come by. For the soup, there isn't enough duck flavor. But adding more duck to the soup can be expensive and impractical. So I understand why the duck soup isn't a good as I would like. Nonetheless, I commend Mananow for making and introducing this great dish to the people. Their Cod with Three-Flavored Sauce is good. The fish is fried with a good batter and clean oils. The sauce is fairly well balanced between acidity, sweetness, and hotness, although I prefer a bit more spiciness. Overall, food is okay to good. I love that 30% of their menu items aren't found in a typical Thai restaurant. I commend them for being bold and creative with their food. read more

Today we tried the Central Thailand Bangkok Set: it come with Galanga soup with chicken Thai omelette with ground chicken Jasmine rice Cucumber relish All items delicious and the flavor pairing is perfect. Northern style curried noodles w chicken - chewy egg noodles in creamy coconut broth with tender-falling off the bone-chicken, there is a bit of a spice kick but def not overwhelming. Adding the mustard greens and purple onions cuts back on the strong coconut cream to really balance the dish out. Very hearty and one of the best curried noodles I've had. Thai iced coffee - def on the sweeter side, texture is very watery not creamy but there is a strong coffee aftertaste - if you're a sweet coffee person, this is for you! I would recommend asking them to put it in a Togo cup. Service super friendly but there is a bit of a wait (~15min). Parking lot fills up pretty quick but there's street parking. read more

Nice, cozy spot to have lunch. The parking lot is a little small so keep that in mind when planning to visit. We got two plates of food (Tom Yum and Pad Thai) along with mango sticky rice to go, $40. Pretty decent price and portion sizes. Really delicious and enjoyable. They have a ton of lunch specials so I'd definitely recommend going for lunch. read more

Love this delicious food! I've been here a few times and brought my Thai friend here today and she gave me the two thumbs up. Her mom is a fantastic cook so... you know. I've had the papaya salad and a few other items on their gluten-free menu (yes, they have one, ask for it) but nothing impressed me more than what I had today which was the seafood curry. There was plenty of seafood and the flavor was deep and delicious. I got it mild and it had a bite so medium and above, be warned. Their staff are great and the place feels inviting.
