This is my third time here. The food here is so good but the service is unacceptable. We ordered fried chicken with red peppers, fried stinky tofu, spicy fish on lettuce, fish with prickle vegetables, pancake with green onion and fried string bean. The food was so good. However, the waitress with long pony tail was so rude. I asked for more plate and she pointed her finger to the plate. She also had an unhappy face all the time. I was super mad about this. The worst part is that 18% tips were already included because we have a party of 6. Seriously? Even though I like the food, I won't come back here because of the service. :( read more

I came here for a family dinner; decent place. It's more like your average Chinese restaurant, the kind you go to only because everybody else is going. The food didn't wow me but it's not bad! Some of the dishes were pretty good, like the eggplant (highly recommend if you ever come by here) and parking was HORRID but only because the private lot is so small! I can always rely on Chiang's when I want some good chinese food and don't want to run down to the ID. Some favorites include the zha jiang mein, spinach noodles, and anything off of their dim sum breakfast on the weekends. The zha jiang mein is a childhood favorite and their version is worth the full day of garlic breath that you'll end up having. The spinach noodles are soft and we usually get it w/ beef. Their dim sum breakfast isn't the typical dimsum you would think off, rather its small plates of Chinese style breakfast. We like the congee and the egg or beef wrapped in bread. So tasty and there really aren't other places around that offer this kind of breakfast. read more

To be honest, I only come back here because of their minced beef mixed noodles. It's one of the best in Seattle. This time we got their sichuan fried chicken, shanghai stir fry noodle and their minced meat mixed noodles. Sichuan fried chicken is a famous dish here that lot of people gets. The batter overpowers the chicken so there isn't much chicken meat in there. Quite oily too. Shanghai stir fry noodle had no taste to it. (usually get something that is different to this so we ordered wrong). But this isn't the kind of noodle that should be in shanghai style stir fry. Then the minced meat mixed noodle never disappoints. It was quite salty but the portion is great. Overall 3 stars because their service is beyond terrible here too. read more

We drove from Kirkland to Seattle to eat Chinese food and the place we wanted to eat at was closed for lunch. So I did a quick Yelp search and found Chiang's. When we pulled up I was worried. It looked questionable from the outside. When I walked in and saw an article about homemade noodles I had hope. The restaurant was really nice on the inside. We were seated pretty quickly. It was around 1p and there weren't many groups eating. It took a little while for someone to come take our order, but not an obnoxious wait. Food - We ordered the homemade noodles with chicken, Mongolian beef and steamed pot stickers. The homemade noodles were AMAZING! I love the gummy, thick noodles and it was really flavorful. Add some hot chili sauce on there and it was delicious. I ate the whole dish, minus maybe one serving to my husband. The Mongolian beef was very tasty, a little on the sweet side, but good. Big portion of beef. Not spicy, despite having tons of chilis in there, which was nice since I don't do spice well. And lastly the pot stickers. It took a while for them to come out, but they were pretty good. The wrapping was thin with lots of meat on the inside. I like that. Overall, the food was great and it hit the spot. Service - Pretty good. The older lady, not sure who she was, but she was really friendly and chatted with us when we were cashing out. Our actual server, a younger guy, was decent enough, not friendly, not rude, just was. I ordered noodles, beef and asked for rice. He was like, "you have noodles, you want rice?" in kind of a judgy, snarky way. Um, yes, I eat rice and noodles and all kind of starches together. I'm Asian and from Hawai'i. We eat rice with rice. ? Plus I had meat, who eats meat without rice. Anyway, I'm digressing and ranting. Besides that, everything else was fine. It looks like a relatively empty part of Seattle, but there is actually really good food to be had here. I walked into this place not expecting much. I thought it would be like the Chinese food equivalent of a greasy spoon. The first sign that told me I was wrong was all the people who were seated and looked to be having a good time. There were even people sitting on chairs, forming a line and waiting for a table. This was during lunch hour on the day before Chinese New Year, but that was still quite an impressive gathering of customers. I had to wait half an hour before any of the food could arrive, but it was definitely worth it! The first thing that came was the rice balls, or rather, rice rolls. They look like they're rice wrapped around rousong (also called "meat wool"), seaweed, and lots of sugar! They were sliced at an oblique angle and wrapped in saran wrap. These things reminded me of sushi, but they're not quite that. They're much sweeter! I've never seen them anywhere else, but I liked the ones here. They were probably meant as snacks or appetizers, so it was great that the rest of the meal came shortly afterward. Apparently, soy milk can serve multiple purposes and comes in the normal sweet variety that you can get at grocery stores, as well as a saltier version. The sweet kind is served warm and doesn't contain that nasty white stuff you often find at the bottom of plastic jugs of soy milk. I found this soy milk very comforting on a cold, rainy day. The other kind of soy milk is quite creative; it's much thicker and basically serves as a soup with youtiao (oil strips) and green onions floating around in it. I must say it lost much of its taste as soy milk that I'm used to from all the extra stuff added, but it's such a fun idea that I didn't really mind it. Another novelty that shows up here but not at run-of-the-mill Chinese restaurants is the "shredded beef with hot chili sauce." For fourteen dollars, you get a plate full of perfectly-spiced beef and another plate with these little "pockets" of bread to go along with it. I really don't know how else to describe them, but they're buns covered in sesame seeds, and you stuff the beef into it to make a sort of sandwich. The taste here is something only an experienced cook could pull off. Everything about it is made just right. Not everybody's going to have the same tolerance for spicy food, but I felt that it was a pretty good amount of spiciness. They didn't go easy on me just because I spoke English, but it wasn't too weak either. If you order this dish and you're particularly sensitive to spicy food, make sure to tell them. Last thing I got here was the "homemade pan-fried noodle Shanghai style." These were very thick and chewy noodles with meat blended into them. Based on the way it tasted, it was a pretty obvious example of authentic Chinese cuisine and I can't believe it only cost eight dollars! Since I had finished the bread before the beef from the previous dish, I dumped the beef into the noodles and it was just one of the best tastes in the world. It doesn't look like much goes into it, but what does go into it is excellent. My biggest complaint with this place is that service is too slow. Business is probably too good for them to be able to attend to the individual concerns of every customer. I heard their telephone ringing and nobody bothered to pick it up. Too bad for the caller; they didn't even get to know that they were being ignored because the store was making so much money from all those customers. I think Chiang's might want to consider getting a bigger staff to speed things up a bit. But definitely keep the people already working there. They make this into one of the best Chinese restaurants in Seattle. read more

Chiang's has a huge menu that I'm slowly going through and trying. So far I've liked the mushu pork and bean curd with mushrooms. The black bean and beef and cumin lamb weren't my favorite. Over the years I've tried other dishes and liked some. One thing is that the price is quite high. For the cumin and lamb dish and bean curd the total was $42 and that didn't include rice. I came here with a group and we had reservations which really aren't neccesary We basically made reservations because you need to tell them a day in advance that you want to order their "stinky tofu" and Braised Shank Hock In Brown Sauce. The "stinky tofu" turned out to be not so stinky at all. It did have a strong smell, but was not bad at all. The tofu itself was fried. For it having a strong smell, there was no tast to it at all. It came with some sort of chili sauce on the side which didn't really help with the flavor. The braised shank hock was wonderful. It reminded me of how my mom would make it. The meat is so tender and falls off the bone. This dish is highly recommended. Salt and pepper chicken, salt and pepper squid, salt and pepper tofu-These three dishes were so good and seasoned very well. They are all prepared the same way. We hadn't been here since it was the New Peking, so it's been more than 15 years. I hesitate going to some place I liked after they change owners and especially names. We came in because they are supposed to have Dim Sum on the weekend, but they didn't have the carts like most Dim Sum places, just a separate small menu. It would have been nice if that menu had pictures as my wife and order with our eyes. After looking over their menu we both got Soup Noodles instead. I had the Seafood Soup Noodles and she had the Pork Chop Soup Noodles. The last soup noodles I had that I really liked was at the Tien Tsin that used to be in Walongford. Their take was just as good, but different. Instead of Beche De Mer (sea cumber), scallops and shrimp Chaing's had scallops, shrimp in the shell, and snow crab in the shell. It was quite messy to eat, but delicious! My wife said she really liked hers and wouldn't give me a taste which means she really loved it, although she was a bit disappointed as it had vermicelli rather than the hand cut noodles that were in mine. We asked after the fact and the owner said just to ask for the hand shaved noodles next time. The only thing I regret about the meal is being so hungry that I forgot to take Picts to post here. We will go back when we are in that part of Seattle. read more

Perfectly cooked and seasoned salt and pepper pork chops, Five spice chicken has that crispy flavor packed goodness, and the green beans are my must haves. Every so often the owner (?) makes a great recommendation and I try something new. I only wish they would deliver, I would order at least once a week from my workplace in Seattle if they did. read more

I have a love/hate relationship with this place. The food here is probably some of the best tasting Chinese food I have ever tasted. I have NOT order anything that I've not loved (and I have tried lots of stuff here). I visit this place at least once every week. Yes, that's how addictive their food is. I almost wish it wasn't so damn addictive. I swear, 1/3 of my paycheck goes to chiangs. My favorite dishes are salt and pepper chicken, ma po tofu, string beans with pork, the steam wontons, and their shanghai style noodles. Their ma po tofu and string beans are soooo food!!!! Yes, so good where you literally have to lick the plate afterwards. The service here is on and off though - most of the times they forget to refill our water and it would take forever to get the check etc . . . . WOW. I'm ultra-impressed. First off, we visited during Sunday morning, and we ate from their brunch (dim-sum) menu. They didn't walk around with trays, everything was made to order, but was very fast. I have no idea what we ate, as I insisted the owner bring us what she was proud of. Nothing failed to impress us, so listing things would just steer potential diners in the wrong direction. But one thing I did remember were the homemade noodles that came out with shrimp. Judy Foo's Snappy Dragon can't even hold a candle to the noodles at Chiang's Gourmet... And we love Judy Foo's! The prices, were super-reasonable. Three of us left STUFFED with lunch for the next day for 25 bucks (including generous tip). And while the place was empty when we arrived (a bit scary, but it was Sunday morning), it was packed when we left... And packed with Asian Americans, which was all the more reassuring that we made the right choice. I had driven by this place thousands of times, but overlooked it until we heard from friends that they regret moving further away from it, as they used to eat at C.G. once a week. We replied to them in total amazement with, "You mean the sketch-looking place with the barrel on the top???" First of all this place very noticeable location on lakecity when you heading toward i5. I am just going to head to review. Food : Portion is generous. Price is very cheap for lunch special. Presentation of food was by the book as what it should be. I order broccoli and beef and Mongolian Beef. Broccoli was not cook and wash properly it still bitter and very hard. Mongolian beef was sugarly sweet I have found 5-6 sugar bits in my food but didn't want to take picture to show the world. Free soup that we got was okay (hot and sour and Corn soup) Ambiance: Place look pretty run down inside look like one of those house in the series HORDERS. All the table and booth is pretty beat up. Condiments on tables are very dry. I usually eat spicy I dont even want to touch it. Overall: Food is doable because of price. Would not be one of the go to type of place for sure. read more

The experience was great first time so we decided to go there last Friday. It was packed of people but fortunately we waited for less than 10 minutes. We ordered drunk chicken, pan fried vermiceili Taiwan style and prawns w/candy coated walnuts. The pan-fried vermiceili was good but the prawns were lack of sugar coating compared to the first time. For the appetizer, drunk chicken, to my surprised, it tasted awful. In my memory, it's supposed to come with chicken breasts or mixed chicken parts. I got all parts of chicken wings and chopped into half. The flavor of rice wine was way too strong for the drunk chicken but we still took the rest home for courtesy. For service, I guess it's Friday so it's ok. We haven't tried the breakfast yet and maybe we will give it try next time. read more

I first tried their Taiwanese noodles at a friend's party. It was spicy but noodles tasted really good! We always pass by this place on the way to my boyfriend's house and one day we decided to try it for dinner. Since my boyfriend tries the bean curd in every Chinese restaurant, he saw it on the menu and ordered that. It was served cold which was a surprise so I kind of didn't like it combined with the texture. The peppered chicken was really good because it was served with Thai Basil so it added a fresh taste. The enoki mushroom brocolli was alright except I never really liked Enoki mushrooms so I just ate the brocolli. The Singapore-style noodles reminded me a Filipino dish called Pancit that I'm used to so I really liked that one. The next we go back, I want to try the stinky tofu and the other dishes I saw pass by our table that day! read more

Don't judge a book by its cover....Went here for my daughter's birthday on a recommendation of a relative. Place was a bit out of the way as it's not an easy place to get to, but there's a big sign in an empty lot so you can't miss it. Need to make a U turn off the main road. Upon entering the restaurant, it was practically empty, not sure if it was because we were early (5:30 pm on a Saturday) or the place wasn't that good. Entire party got there a bit after we did, so we were ready to order. Had a variety of dishes, including several types of noodle dishes (apparently, they hand make their own noodles), tofu, steam fish, pork chops, beef and veggies....The noodle dishes were good, but I really liked the steamed fish and the beef brisket. The fish was fresh and even though there was no sauce (black bean, etc.,), it was still very good and flavorful. The brisket came out on the bone accompanied by a knife, as we cut the size of meat we wanted. The brisket was very tender and it practically fell off the bone, no knife was needed. It went very well with the rice. :). Overall, a good experience, the staff was friendly and helpful and catered to all our requests and questions. About the restaurant being empty when we arrived...Well, that was answered as while we were eating, the place was filling up and when we left, the place was full. If you are on the north side of town and craving Chinese food, check this place out, you won't be disappointed. read more

I remember when Chiangs was The Jolly Roger. That was in the '80s. I haven't set foot in there since then. Looks like they haven't done much to the building except slap on a coat of beige paint a decade or so ago. The front door is sticky to the touch. A little 409 wouldn't hurt. Anyway, I was looking for Chinese take out, not a fine dining experience. We ordered basic chicken and broccoli and bbq pork and broccoli. Both were delicious. Adventurous I am not, but I'll be sure to try the Szechuan menu next time. It's not cheap enough to give 5 stars, or even 4, but the food was good. read more

Review is written for a dinner experience. We ordered the salt & pepper pork chops and the eggplant with szechuan sauce. The pork was mediocre - dry and under seasoned, and missing any sort of peppers. The eggplant was okay, but nothing special - oddly enough, they were cut thick without a bias cut, so the flavor didn't really make it through to the middle part of each piece of eggplant. It was just okay. Not worth the price for dinner (around $12 a dish before tax/tip), but would be worth it for a lunch special or something. read more

Simply the best noodles around! Spicy Beef Noodles to be more specific but you must get there early for the freshness. Next is the walnut honey shrimp, candy coated shrimp is making my mouth water just typing this. Spicy Shredded Beef with the pancake wraps is recommended for those that can handle some heat. Overall the best food but get there early they fill up fast. Yes the staff can sometimes be difficult and when they are busy (always are) the service slows. We used to love this restaurant and the food was the best Chinese we could find. We don't know what happened but the food has really gone downhill. The General Tso's chicken tasted like they used day-old previously cooked chicken; it was hard and dry. The assorted vegetable dish, was a steamed mess with too much salt. The noodles were okay but there was almost no chicken with the dish. The fried dumplings were just okay. The the restaurant was never a glamour palace but it was at least presentable now the place looks dirty and rundown and the toilets were filthy. It needs a good cleaning and some repairs. We cannot recommend this restaurant anymore and felt that for $50, it was a complete waste of money. I guess it's back to the search for a really good Chinese restaurant. read more

Introduction: Chiang's Gourmet Restaurant is a great place to bring a group of friends together for lunch or dinner like in Chinese culture (at many Chinese restaurants, there is that big lazy Susan looking device so you can rotate the plates easier). Chiang's should be the place you go when you're transitioning to Faux-Chinese food to authentic Chinese food. Customer Service: The wait staff are usually English speaking including Mandarin and/or Cantonese. It's all business as to what you want to order and a refill of the tea or water. It won't be the visit of "how's everything tasting?" But do feel free to ask questions along the lines of "What's this?" and "What's in this, is it beef?" Don't ask if the chicken's free range or if they have fair-trade green tea because they probably won't know what you're talking about like the last customer who asked that when I was dining at Chiang's a few weeks ago. Food: I don't know what the Americanized "Chinese" food tastes like as I never order anything from that menu. The authentic Chinese menu has several dishes I've randomly tried and ended up liking. The authentic Chinese food here is delicious as four mainland Chinese and my girlfriend's family of Hong Kong Chinese agree. Price to Value: You can get away treating two or three friends spending $50-75 easy altogether. By yourself or one to two friends is an easy $30. But in either scenario, somebody is likely to be carrying out a take out bag with left overs. Ancient Chinese Secret? In general, if you're looking for authentic and really good Chinese food (and Taiwanese to some degree), listen to actual culturally Chinese people. They'll 99% steer you in the right direction! And if the ratio of Chinese to non-Chinese is higher, more likely it is more authentic. That's a better indicator than a pregnancy test! Facility: The facility is completely not austere or horribly dirty BUT I do highly recommend not sitting in the far back (when you enter, look straight ahead, it's that area) because you will get the slight hint of the restroom scent followed by it being sort of cold. If that's the last seating arrangement, just play it off and have other people sit there and wait for a table at another section of the dining area. My recommendation to you: Don't go here thinking that what you get at P.F. Chang's is what you'll find here. This place serves very authentic Chinese food. How do I know? When there is a ratio of more Chinese people to non-Chinese Americans, that's almost a confirmation. And for those who think Panda Express, P.F. Chang's, a fortune cookie and General Tso's chicken are real deal Chinese, challenge yourself, open your mind and try out the actual Chinese menu. You'll find there is more to Chinese food than Egg Foo Yung, chop suey and all those other "Chinese" dishes. Also, I highly recommend not going to Chiang's using the I-5 off ramp to Lake City Way because you may be waiting for a long time just to take a left turn into the parking lot since that street is always busy. read more

Rediscovering Chiang's Gourmet after all the years I've been away from Seattle is like getting reacquainted with an old friend and discovering that some of the best things in life stand the true test of time: five star spicy chicken being one of those things. The five star spicy chicken is essentially popcorn chicken swimming in a basket of red chili peppers. It's not actually all that spicy, and it's crispy, not greasy, addicting and perfectly bite-sized. Some other dishes that are also good: spicy fish fillet and noodles, pan fried noodles, and ja jiang mien (sp?). Chiang's Gourmet is a bit older so bear with the old carpet, which could use a deep cleaning, and the exterior, which could use a fresh layer of paint. They could accommodate large groups and also have booths that cozily seat 2-4 people (or more!). read more
