Little Duck a small restaurant with what seems like a pretty robust takeout operation, and a relatively large menu. Seating is somewhat limited, and if the restaurant is busy and you come in with a large (like more than 4) group you're probably SOL. Most of the tables are two tops, and half of them run along a shared bench on the side of the restaurant and are quite close together. There are maybe six inches of space between those tables, so even being nowhere near the thickest person I know, I struggled to squeeze in and out of the bench seating. Anyway, once you squeeze into your seat, you use the QR code on the table to both browse the menu and place your order. You can add to your order once you place it, which I found necessary since I didn't realize at first that you have to order white rice separately. It's $2 a bowl, which is a choice, but everything else is so reasonably priced it's hard to stay mad about it. We had the shredded tofu skin salad, egg and chive, dry fried string beans, mapo tofu, and vegetable egg noodles. And a bowl of white rice. For two very hungry people, we left stuffed and had one lunch's worth of leftovers. Tofu skin salad was good, but a little sweet for my taste. Egg and chive is simple yet very tasty and filling! Dry fried string beans are excellent. Note they are a vegetarian version, which I appreciate. Mapo tofu here is nearly perfect, my only qualm is that it's a little bit on the oily side. I messed up and ordered the one with meat, which I eat but my husband doesn't. Oops! But more for me. You can order the meatless ones for those of us who are veg. The vegetable egg noodles are good, and a huge portion, although not that special in my opinion. Tastes kind of like if mushu pork was noodles. I will definitely still get the dry fried string beans and mapo tofu next time, but will probably try some dumplings and other vegetable dishes as well. read more

The portions here are huge. That's the first thing to know. When the wife and I were in from out of town we found this placed on Yelp, and based on the reviews decided to give it a try. We should have read the reviews a bit closer hough because I am sure somewhere somebody mentioned portion sizes but I missed it. We ordered multiple dishes to share like we do at our local Chinese food place in Arizona and that was a huge mistake. A single entree here can easily feed a family of four. Everything is priced very reasonably too. We had a slight miscommunication issue but were able to overcome it without too much difficulty. This is definitely a place for authentic food, and we were made to feel right at home. The food had wonderful flavor that tantalized the taste buds, and if my review were stopped here I would have given them five stars and been looking forward to my next visit. Super small restaurant selling yummy food. When I went to UW for 4 year I had always passed this place and never tried it. I'm glad I did (even after my college time was over). The fried pork was so delicious and crispy. The sauce was sweet and sour and a perfect pairing for the pork. The green beans were so good way better price, amount, and taste than din tai fung. After recently moving back to Seattle, we decided to revisit this place since it had been about two years since our last visit. We stopped by during the summer when most students were gone, and even at lunchtime we were the only customers in the restaurant. The food was made fresh to order--we could hear the wok cooking in the kitchen--and everything arrived quickly. The owner was also very friendly and welcoming, which made for a pleasant dining experience. As for the food, the portions were solid and the dishes tasted freshly prepared, but most of what we ordered was noticeably salty. Aside from the sweet-and-sour eggplant dish, which had a more balanced flavor profile, the other dishes were heavily seasoned to the point of being overwhelming. Went to this place as it was very convenient location for us. It's a small restaurant but cozy. Unfortunately it had bench seats which was shared among other tables. The party next to us that shared the bench unfortunately kept shaking the entire bench making it uncomfortable. Luckily my daughter was willing to switch seats with me as it didn't bother her. The service was okay as there was only 2 people working the tables and l suspect felt overwhelmed. However, the food was surprisingly very good/tasty with large portions reasonably priced! I previously lived in China almost 20 years, and was excited to check out Little Duck, as it seemed to have a lot of good reviews from customers talking about its authenticity. But of the 4 dishes I ordered for take-away, I'm afraid two were just average, and the other two were quite poor. The Stir Fried String Beans 干煸四季豆 were probably the biggest disappointment - no sign of any Sichuan peppercorns or minced pork, even though I asked the guy who took my order and he assured me it included both, and the beans were overcooked - and the Eggplant with Minced Pork 肉末茄子 was bland and overcooked. The Double Cooked Pork 锅包肉 was fine, while the Hot & Spicy Chicken 辣子鸡块 at least had some flavor, but wasn't nearly as fragrant and spicy as that I would get at almost any Sichuanese restaurant in Beijing. Service: I ordered by phone and picked up in person. The guy who took my order was polite and efficient, and very accurately advised me when I should arrive such that the food would be ready, but still hot. Still not sure why he said the String Beans included Sichuan peppercorns and minced pork (we spoke in Mandarin, so no way there was any miscommunication) though, when they clearly did not. read more

It had nice sour notes & the addition of peanuts gave a nice texture contrast. The food here speaks to my very soul, as I was born and raised in northern China. Packed full of authentic flavors, this is a no frills hole-in-the-wall type restaurant that delivers incredible taste. The twice cooked pork, aka 锅包肉, is a must try. It is the perfect balance of sweet, savory, crispy and chewy. The sauce, meat, and batter are all just the right texture. This is almost identical to some of the best versions of this dish I've experienced in my hometown in China. You will be hooked after the first bite. For the remainder of our meal we ordered the eggplant with garlic sauce (鱼香茄子) and sauerkraut with pork belly stew (my Chinese is limited lol). Both also delicious, which we also devoured with gusto. The only minor downside is that the dine in space is limited to a handful of tables, but takeout is a great option here, and the orders were flying out of the kitchen nonstop. Chinese cuisine varies considerably by region, and it has always been such a struggle to find authentic northern Chinese style restaurants, which is why Little Duck is an absolute treasure. They were plenty big for 2.5 of us (little man is 3 and eats like a champ but not that much!) and we're both really good! The pork was nicely done with a really good sauce and the beans were Perfectly flavored. Neither of them were particularly pretty in a to go box, but I can imagine that the presentation value goes up dramatically when you're dying in. There are about a dozen things on the menu that looked awesome, but given her time constraints with her recently surgery little man, we just got a couple of things to go. The actual physical space of this location is really small, so while it may be good for a smaller group, it's definitely not the sort of place you're going to bring 20 people and have room to dine at.If the volume of people that were there when we came by is any indication of the popularity of this place, it's definitely a spot you need to show up too early or expect to wait a little bit. Food: My friend from Northeast China said the food here was very authentic. My favorite was the double cooked pork slices, sweet and sour to the perfect degree, with the perfect crispiness. The only "complaint" I have is all the chunks were huge, kind of hard to deal with using chopsticks. The stewed chicken with mushroom was delicious too! Loved the special kind of mushroom they use, and the tenderness of the chicken meat. The broth was a bit salty though. The mushroom with baby bok choy was meh. Twice Cooked Pork has always been divided into "team ketchup" and "team vinegar". To be honest, I couldn't care less because both are amazing. Little Duck is team ketchup. Again, I don't have a specific preference and I think they did a good job. Bok Choy was very fresh, and they use dried mushrooms for more intense flavors. Unlike many Chinese restaurants that dumps corn starch on veggies, the amount of corn starch was just right. Small restaurant. Cute decor. Food is on a pricier side, but this is a niche market, so I respect that. But I still think there's room for a price decrease, considering the portion size is also on the smaller end. The space is somewhat small, and our party of 8 felt like it took up at least a quarter of the seating. I have to give Little Duck points for not Americanizing the crap out of their menu like so any Chinese restaurants do. We ordered a ton of dishes to see which ones stuck. Pros: Pork and Napa cabbage dumplings: Tender, juicy Eggplant in garlic sauce: Tangy, just a little crispy Double cooked pork slices: Something like sweet and sour, though a bit thickly breaded. Hot and spicy chicken: This was an awesome dish, the fried chicken equivalent of Schezuanese hot pot including the numbing spice, but it had way too may bones. Cons: Bok Choi: low on flavor Stewed Chick in Musrhoom sauce: Salty, too much broth, too few noodles. Meh: Tofu with green onions Moo shu chicken: didn't really resemble any moo shu I've ever had (no pancakes, no hoisin sauce). The other nondescript sweet and sour pork type dish. Tl;Dr the best Chinese food on the Ave In general Chinese food on the Ave is fairly mediocre. So when I heard this place opened I was cautiously optimistic. However once I walked in the door I got really excited. Whenever no English is being spoke, it's generally a good sign. That being said, there is a bit of a language barrier so either brush up on that Mandarin or get used to pointing a lot. The food here was incredible, if a bit expensive. Everything was served fresh and you could tell they used fresh ingredients. The mapo tofu was delicious with a kind of floral taste to it that you usually don't get at other places. The eggplant with garlic sauce was incredible as well. The eggplant has a slight crust on it and the garlic sauce really enhanced the flavors. The double cooked pork in my opinion was the least impressive of the dishes. It was really good, but for the price it wasn't quite what I would have hoped it would be.
