I don't know a whole lot about Chinese food. However, I've been to quite a few restaurants on both coasts and this is by far the best I have ever been to. Good waiters, good quantities, amazing food. I got lemon chicken, which is usually done with that translucent glaze (like a yellow sweet and sour sauce). Excellent food and attentive service! Take out is available, but don't deny yourself the opportunity to dig into the hot plates of food as they come out of the kitchen. Chiang's offers an authentic Chinese menu (featuring tendon, shredded tripe and fried intestine) as well as American/Chinese (e.g., diced chicken w/cashews, fried rice, etc.). Website also shows a separate vegetarian menu, which may be new. I've never been offered one at the restaurant. When I was still eating meat I could definitely vouch for the steaming hot pots of home made noodles with beef or pork. Also, I think their hot and sour soup is the best! Noodles are their specialty, and as I write this I'm craving their cold noodles in hot sesame sauce...delish! Also 2 thumbs up for the green onion pancake, Chinese eggplant w/hot and spicy garlic sauce(!!) and the always-dependable sauteed green beans. I'd recommend anything described on the menu as "hot spicy." My only negative comment is about the fried tofu...whenever I've ordered it, it's been on the soggy side and flavorless (which is pretty much the character of tofu anyway, but may be a drawback to vegetarians). This is our go-to for take out and dine-in Dim Sum on the weekends. Without a recommendation, the exterior is enough to put you off, but do yourself a favor and get over it. My FAVORITE thing to do - and the kitchen seems to love it - is to state the allergies and tell them to surprise you. 20ish visits and no disappointments. We have eaten here a few times in the past, and been pleased with the food. Tonight we ordered the Gourmet combination dinner for two and were pretty underwhelmed. Both soups were tepid, not hot. The egg roll appetizer was good, but the barbecued pork was dry, and the two fried shrimp were terrible. The hot mustard and sesame seeds were about half of a serving. The beef and vegetables was OK, but the chicken and pork were very ordinary. But to my mind--more seriously--the place just needed a good cleaning. The carpet stains are probably not coming out. The men's restroom is cramped, and the wash basin has been repeatedly caulked by someone who has no idea how to do it. The towel dispenser is half missing, and the whole room could use a pressure washer. I didn't think to look for a cleanliness report on the front door, but I can't imagine my going back. read more

I got a headache an hour or so after eating here and that developed into stomach pains and fever. I never knew Chinese food could taste so bland until I came here. There's not even any oil in the food. The fried noodles tasted like steamed rice. The beef tasted like steamed rice. The spicy wontons had an orange sauce over it which looked spicy but it tasted like, you guessed it, steamed rice soaked in water. I love this place and I am picky about my Chinese food! Order off the small menu and you will not be disappointed. They even sell "xialong bao" which I can't find anywhere closer than B.C. These are the little steamed "soup" pork buns and they are yummy! Standouts include: cold smoked fish, savory soy bean milk soup, baked cake with beef, spicy shredded beef, steamed breaded spare ribs and intestines, anything with bean curd sheet and my FAVORITE thing - shanghai pan fried rice cake!! Not everyone likes this, but I dream about it if I don't eat it for a while. I think there is crack in it. It is swimming in oil and glutinous as hell and I swear it takes 3 days to digest but I love it!! Satisfied my rice cake craving yesterday so I am good to go for another week or so. read more

I ordered takeout from this place and it was the most horrific thing I've ever eaten in my life. My orange chicken and my boyfriend's General Tso's chicken were extremely overcooked so the batter and the chicken had become extremely tough and chewy. The glaze on both of them tasted the same, the only way we could tell a difference is that mine had chunks of orange peel in it and his didn't. My roommate ate at the restaurant and had a very different experience but I don't think I'll waste my time or money again. read more

We thought the busy parking lot would be a sign of a popular and good restaurant. Attention to customer service is sorely lacking. We were not acknowledged for 10 minutes of standing at the service counter. This with the restaurant mostly empty. Then we are seated at the very back, next to a table were they field take out calls, but instead are talking to friends on the phone. Phone rings incessantly, with no one answering it. Could hardly hear your conversation over it. It took 40 minutes just to be served. The almond chicken looked like it had been ordered from Stella's and then a can of gravy was dumped on it. Brutal. No utensils were provided, chopsticks or otherwise. Had to go find some at an empty table because no one would serve us. The bath rooms were disgustingly dirty. Noone attended our table for 20 minutes after closing our menus, and again, no one attended our table for 20 minutes after completing our meal to check in or ask if we wanted our bill. The exit door was disgusting, covered in some sort of sticky substance. Will never eat there again, or recommend to friends. Unbelievable that a place like this can stay in business. read more

If I could give zero stars, I would. Terrible food and worse service. My son and I ate there yesterday. The BBQ pork wasn't bad. There was hardly any of the red sauce in the yellow mustard, so we asked for some more. She brought a side of ketchup. The sweet and sour pork came out and it was AWFUL. The waitress never came back to see if our food was ok. She also never brought the soda I ordered. We didn't eat much of it and at the end I nicely told her that it wasn't very good and tasted like old fryer oil. All she said in response was "no". I was like "uh..ok". I said that even if that isn't it, its just really bad. Her response was to continue to argue with me that the oil wasn't bad so the food is fine. She didn't offer to get us something else or to take it off the bill...she simply reiterated that the horrible quality food that tasted like crap is fine. Sunday evening and our family is excited to visit Chiang's. My husband had read the mostly good reviews, was a bit concerned about comments regarding poor service but decided to try it out anyway. Big mistake. We only waited five minutes to be seated, were given water and tea right away so we're thinking - hey - we dodged the waited forever for a table bullet. Not so fast - a half an hour went by and nothing - not even encouragement from any of the wait staff that they were unusually busy and we'll get to you as soon as we can. Nada, bupkis, zip. Our tea pot was long empty and it felt a bit like The Twilight Zone. People kept being seated but no one took any orders! Finally - praise the Lord - here comes a woman with an order pad and takes the order from a group of young men who had just been seated. I'll give her the benefit of the doubt - maybe she's going to take everyone's orders and then hit the kitchen. No. She took orders from two tables and then sauntered back to the kitchen. I said - "That's it." We got up and left and went to one of our top ten restaurants further south on Roosevelt where we also had to wait because we hit the dinner rush. Hey here's something novel: While we were waiting they gave us chai and appetizers to nibble on at no charge. There's a hint for you Chiangs. Take care of your customers and they will take care of you. Chiangs may have killer food but who would know? read more

From when me and my friends first entered something was off, they went to seat us in the back of the restaurant, away from everyone else on a much smaller table. The food was great however except much too pricy for what it was, after receiving no service and racking up a 50$ lunch for three we decided not to give a tip. We were followed out to our car and scolded. I told the owner (I presume) that we wouldn't be coming back after that mess of a situation and I meant it. Go anywhere else there are plenty of delicious Asian style restaurants all around town. At a much better price too. We live in the southend and will make the brutal drive through Seattle traffic to eat at Chiang's. But here's the tip - go when not during peak traffic or meal hours. We have a late lunch, dining on wonderful Shanghai luncheon fare. Favorites are: Green onion pancakes, Steamed Wonton in Spicy sauce, Bean Curd paste minced Pork over homemade noodles. We try to order a new dish each time but these 3 are my favorites. When in doubt, ask 'Auntie Mabel'...she will never lead you astray. All her suggested dishes are delicious. Great place for authentic Chinese food and for a great price as well!! I always come here and get the "Homemade Panfried Noodles" and "Fried Rice" spicy style. Their Panfried noodles are the best! And if you choose to get chicken with it, it melts in your mouth. I also go with the fried dumplings (which they make to order so it's like 15 mins). It's so good! Horrible service in North America. I hate the their service. Plus there is probably some kind of discrimination going on there. When i ask about a menu, they get angry instead of explaining. When I order a food with extra flavour, they never give. It happened like 4 Times. When I complained about that they get mad at me telling that she didn't charge for the extra flavour. I just wanted the extra flavour. I definitely would have paid for the extra. Ididnt ask something for free. Once the cashier doesn't want to handle my to go order that was on a table. He just said go get your food after taking my money. This is so upsetting place. There 2 ego people. One ego Chinese boy and one woman who has very broken English. I hate u guys. The home made noodle dishes are great...although you have to keep in mind if you dont want add MSG in you food you have to let them know. The service is quick to take your order and your food comes out amazingly fast, but its hard to catch your waiter for your soda refill after you have recieved your meal. Tonight, (Sunday, December 8) was my birthday. I called on Friday and got a reservation for 12 people at 5:30. We got there, everyone showed up and by 7:00 when we left the restaurant was jam packed. The food tonight was MORE than 5 stars. We had so many things I can't even begin to list them all. It was absolutely incredible. Each plate better than the next. The 5 star spicy scallops were divine, the wonton and hot and sour soups were fantastic, the shredded spicy beef was incredible, the mapo tofu was perfect and the home made noodles weren't even on the table long enough to get cold. I love the lazy Susan in the middle of the table that allowed us all to sample a little of everything. It was the best birthday I have had in 46 years. Hands down. Well worth every single penny. And speaking of pennies... the whole bill for 12 people and round after round of food? Just over $170 - with tip around $200. A great birthday night with great people. this place came strongly recommended by a couple friends whose taste for food i trust. one of them is a big Chinese food fan & the other is just a foodie, period. so we decided to do take out last night from Chiang's. we ordered the handmade shanghai style noodles, eggplant in spicy garlic sauce, beef with spring onions & tofu with vegetables. the beef & the eggplant were scrumptious - the beef just melted in your mouth & even i, inspite of currently being on a soft food diet thanks to some 'you don't want to hear the full saga' jaw issues, was able to eat it without any probs! the eggplant was a bit greasy but that's part of the package when you eat at an authentic Chinese place. the noodles were great too & so was the tofu but i thought the first 2 were worth writing home about. yes, we will be back & next time will have to try a few other recommendations from the yelp reviews... read more

I echo the sentiments of others who have said that the food is amazing but the service is ridiculously bad. As a white person, I feel silly calling it racism, but I have seen our table full of crackers being ignored for 45 minutes as new Chinese customers came in, were served and left. This has happened numerous times from different wait staff. I am not exaggerating. We are very polite diners and will tip well above 20% for good service and usually around 20% for mediocre service. I have tipped them 20% for terrible service, hoping it would get better next time if they knew that we weren't going to be dicks. It never got better and it definitely sounds like we're not the only ones who were treated this way. Several times, in an empty restaurant, it still took them 30 minutes to even come to our table for drink orders. They left before we could order food even though we were ready. 30 minutes later, they came back for food orders after we basically flagged them down with waving arms. 45 minutes later, our food came. Took another 30 minutes to find someone to get the bill. Once, we tried their weekend dim sum brunch. We got cut off ordering. The waitress left before had ordered everything we want. We waited over an hour for our food and we sat there so long between our meal and our bill that we were literally hungry again by the time it came. I have given them so many chances because I love their food, but it's never even close to acceptable service. Take-out isn't a whole lot better, but if you just give them 20-30 minutes longer than they say it will take, you'll be alright. Once you actually GET the food, it's incredible. Worth the hassle if you plan accordingly. Best shaved noodles in town. The vegetarian ribs are SO crispy and delicious, served on a bed of perfectly cooked broccoli. Great mooshu. This place is a real dive. The food is sorely lacking - tasteless and oddly "grainy." The service does not make up for the sub par food. We waited for 30 minutes to place our order. There were 5 of us with 5 separate dishes. Once the food finally arrived about an hour or so into our arriving, one dish followed like 15 minutes later. We'd forgotten we'd ordered it. Then the check - the waitress gave us some incoherent excuse for not being able to divide a check if each individual order was less than $15 - which makes absolutely no sense. So she forced us to use just two credit cards and split the bill in half. A professional wait staff upon seeing a group of 5 ladies would ask if this was separate checks; at least this is what I'd do when I waited tables in college. I have traveled to China on many occasions and can no longer bear to eat Chinese food in America - except for Chiang's Gourmet. Traditional recipes not covered in sickly sweet or gelatinous sauces. The noodles, tofu and fish dishes are amazing - I have NEVER had a dish that was not stellar - full of authentic flavor, fresh, and respectful of the ingredients used. Like many Chinese restaurants, however, the dish presentation is just so-so, with more emphasis on the taste rather than looks. This restaurant's major downfall, though, is poor service. We placed our order and it was dropped off never to see the server again until it was time to drop the bill. We would have ordered more drinks and we needed napkins and it would have been nice if they would have been attentive. There were only 2 tables in the place so they were not busy. It took 5min to get seated, when the place was only 1/2 full. Then we ordered and were told it would take 20min to get dumplings, which is nice that she told us upfront. But it took 45min and by then we had to leave, and we did tell her that we only had an hour to spend. The only reason I give this place 2 stars instead of 1: the dumplings that I finally got to eat at work later that night, which were then cold and had no sauce, were actually tasty and well made. Otherwise, the food we got was extremely greasy, somewhat cold, and very bland. There were about 3 tablespoons of free floating oil on our plate! The rice was old and crusty. The place was a sauna, the windows were fogged, and I was sweating 5min in to the meal. Bleh. I so wanted to love this place. I love the fact that they have an authentic menu alongside the one offering more traditional American fare. I've had far too many combination dinners serving the pallid Almond Chicken with evil gravy poured over those Styrofoam noodles. So a place that offered stuff like 'fried pig intestine' and 'fried tofu of strong odor' made my ears prick with interest. The soup noodles with shredded pork and preserved vegetables I brought home on a sick day was surprisingly bland, the broth listless and needing a good splash of soy sauce to add flavor. Undaunted, I brought home the 'pan fried vermicelli Singapore style' next. I live ten minutes from there, but by the time I got home it was a gloppy mass of rubber cement, and the chewy noodles were a great jaw exercise but there just wasn't much taste going on there. Had to pour on soy sauce for some flavor, and the soy just sat on top of the congealed noodles. Disappointment. OK, enough with takeout. I ordered in. 'Drunk chicken' is rubbery unskinned chicken wings marinated in soy sauce and sake, steamed and served ice cold. The skin was slimy and the chicken achingly salty from the soy, and the soy/sake combination needed another note; garlic maybe? I had high hopes for the 'Home made pan fried noodles Shanghai Style." The noodles were firm and chewy, they were tossed in a brown sesame paste with nothing else...Again, lacking...something. Anything. At home I could have added a bit of oyster sauce, hoisin, maybe even meat of some sort. And despite being pan-fried, they were cold. The meal was boring and mostly inedible, not worth boxing to bring home. I contemplated trying 'Prawns with candy coated walnuts," but $18 is pretty spendy for a gamble and I've given this place my very best shot, I really have. I'm sad about it, too. read more

I came here because of the very positive Yelp! reviews but I have to say I was sorely disappointed. I ordered the scallion pancakes and some spicy chicken dish. The scallion pancakes tasted like oily chalk, and the chicken dish was quite mediocre. The service was pretty efficient, though I went at a pretty off hour (I think 8pm on a weekday), but the food quality did not make a compelling case for a return visit. read more

I was in the Lake city area yesterday and my friend suggested this restaurant, went and ordered from the lunch menu and was very disgusted with the food. I told our waiter I could not eat this and he just ignored me. I had to practicly yell at him and he pretented not to know english, he was the rudest waiter I have ever come across. He proceeded to the other patrons there and continued to ignore our table, I had to get up being disabled at that and tell him again, he just through my plate in the bus bin and walked away and I said thanks for all your help. The other lunches we ordered were leftover from the day before and were awful. The fat looking waiter was very disgustedly rude and we were very embarrased for him. I do see from these reviews that this place has good to bad reviews but we experienced the worst of this restaurant. VERY, Very BAD.
