But for this trip, I had some long drives that would have been cost prohibitive with rideshare, so I bit the bullet. I was most happy with the check-in process. I was able to do most of it online, so the pick-up at airport was fast and easy. Most importantly, they didn't try to scare me into buying unnecessary insurance or TollPass transponders. The rep showed me how to pay my tolls by plate online, and never mentioned any extras. Thank you! I had selected the premium car category, and I had the choice between an Audi S5, Alfa Romeo Giulia, and Hyundai Genesis. I picked the Audi and it was clean, well equipped , and in good condition. Apple CarPlay worked great, which basically covers everything these days - maps, radio, bluetooth calling, etc. Drop off was just as fast, and the rental car area is a short tram ride away from the Terminals. Overall easy peasy and price was competitive. I'd rent from them again, which I can't say about most of my car rental experiences.

Even so, I was later billed over $600, had to dispute it, and the charge was eventually refunded. After that, I was contacted again about the same balance, saw another charge appear, and even received a letter saying I needed to pay or risk being banned from renting with Enterprise. Escalations then told me they could not see the charge and said I should dispute it with my bank. Very stressful and disappointing experience.

Oh my!! Why are the ratings so low!!?!?!?…read more We booked our Budget rental through Costco Travel bc nothing says "vacation mode" like using your bulk-membership powers to score a great car deal!! The process was smoother than a Costco rotisserie chicken!! At O'Hare, Linda at the Budget counter greeted us like a car-rental fairy... only to announce that our reserved vehicle was not available. But no worries.... she upgraded us to a choice between a Jeep, Hyundai, or Mazda, at no additional cost. We picked the Mazda CX-50, a ride so smooth it felt like it was gliding over buttered pavement!! After paying, Linda sent us on a small adventure to take the escalator to the 2nd floor, go through the parking garage, and find our chariot w the keys already inside. We also rented a hotspot (just in case we were in an area with no phone signal) which we didn't actually need bc apparently Chicago has better signal than a Verizon tower. Over 3.5 days, we drove w five people all around North Chicago, only spending $30 on gas , which in 2025 feels like a miracle!!! Return was a breeze: signs, attendants, and no drama. In short: great car, great price, and Linda deserves a raise!! *Pro tip: Get the pre pay for the tolls!! You are in uncharted waters (if you're not from this area) and trust, there are lots of different freeways and toll roads in this area!!! You have been warned!!!

Lulu from Budget advised if I get it empty bring it back empty. But that can't happen because I didn't use it much. This is the second issue I've had with Budget. They are the same company as AVIS . Same owners. So why ????

The sent a text a day or two before to rental inviting me to enter my driver's license information to reduce my time at the counter, but there's no way that actually saved me time. I was at the counter for 10-15 minutes waiting. The only reason I give them three stars is because they had a minivan and honored that reservation--unlike Hertz, which I originally rented from and called me on Friday for a Monday rental to tell me they wouldn't have the car I rented. Though I will say that whilst I was waiting at the counter for the car (after she had called to the garage or whatever to request they get a minivan ready) the employee asked me if a seven passenger SUV would work or if it had to be a van, so that did not make me happy. In the end, however, they provided me with the van that I had rented. The car smelled weird, though, at least to me. If I was flying into O'Hare, it probably wouldn't be an issue to get a car. But as a resident, it's a hassle. The only vehicles that are permitted to enter area rental car building are shuttle buses, so if you have someone pick you up or take a taxi or ride share, you have to meet them in the kiss and fly lot at the end of the building. It was a bit of a hassle getting a Lyft to figure out where I was after the cab that the Avis woman had called (which was going to charge me $27 to drive fewer than four miles to my home) didn't show up. It also makes drop-off difficult; the friend who dropped me off took me to the rental garage because we didn't know any different and so I had to hop out in a weird spot in the garage to find my way. Hopefully if you rent from there and you read this, you'll know to have them drop you at the kiss and fly. All this is to say, I would rather rent from a free-standing car rental location than mess about at the airport.

Took the associate a bit to assign a car (he was new, not his fault). Gives me a spot number for a white Acadia. Car is a white Equinox when I get there. Less than half a tank of gas and is dirty inside. Go back and get a different car from a second agent. He's much faster and says to choose the white Acadia in a different spot. It's a black Acadia, but the key says it's white (license plate number matches the keychain and says it's a white car too). It also smelled like weed. I find out the next day there's no wiper fluid in it. Now, I don't blame the desk personnel for this stuff, but the car refresh team needs some help.

Picking up was easy and the staff in the area assisting were helpful. But getting thru their exit gate was a bad experience! It took so very long and I even switched lanes to try to get a better lane. What I found most upsetting was that there was only 1 vehicle in each line, but the amount of time it took to check out was unreasonably long! As for the vehicle I got - it was ok. Nothing special, a full size Chevy pickup. Checking back in to drop the car off was easy, I simply parked and got out. But I normally get an email receipt within a minute and as of now, I've not gotten any email from National with this receipt, which I need to file my expense report. So, I might have to end of calling, which is a frustrating waste of time! Overall - this is not the type of service I expect from National, as it's not the type of experience I've received in the past. ***BTW - National Rental Car - when you reply, don't offer up the cliche response, say something with valid, actionable substance!
