I give them only 1 star because first they asked me if I could bring the e-bike to them. Then I got a message asking if I still needed their assistance after they told me they don't work on E-bikes. I can't speak for the way this company operates in a non-emergency, but in an EMERGENCY situation FORGET IT. Such an absolute joke. I could not have made it more clear that we had an emergency and needed someone asap. Our building had a gas leak and one of the units was out of town, no one had a key. I respect that businesses have protocols, but they won't even schedule a tech to come out without authorization from the unit and proof of residency. Called EIGHT other locksmiths and no one had that requirement, at least not in an emergency. After all of the back and forth, could not guarantee me that someone could be at the building within 45 minutes. Could have saved me so much time and energy if we started there, even though I had asked multiple times and expressed complete urgency. read more

Just like everyone, I read the reviews expecting to be wowed. Situation: Very small storage lock with a key. Pros: He was quick. Same day appointment. (The extra star). Cons: He was obviously rushing from the second he got out the car with an attitude. He went from picking the lock to drilling in a matter of seconds. He also didn't inform me that it was an additional $90 for the drill. I'm so big on being upfront with the customer. It was extremely annoying because my grandfather (who usually helps but was out of town) told me it shouldn't be more than $30-$50 because it was simple. I didn't realize it was an extra until he told me the final price. What if I didn't have it? I could see if it was an extra $10 and you didn't mention it, but $90?! Also, the yelp code didn't work. I've used Steve with Chicago Locksmiths twice now and it's been a terrific experience! The first time he came over was to rekey my new condo. The sellers had installed a sliding glass door to the patio that had a separate key than the main entry, and I thought we would be stuck with two keys for our exterior doors. Not so! Steve had it all rekeyed to work with the same key! I didn't even think that was going to be possible! The five-star reviews here read like they were written for a different business. My experience with these guys was lackluster, to say the least. My bicycle lock broke in the Loop, I needed my lock to be destroyed ASAP in order to get my bike home. Keep in mind: this is--at most--a 10 minute job, usually done with a kind of saw, but it does require specialized equipment. When I first called, I was told that a smith would be there within 45 minutes and that he would call me when he was on his way. After waiting for the entire 45 minutes in an office building lobby, I called back and was told that they had no idea where the smith was and would call me back in "two minutes." Ten minutes later, I got a call from the locksmith himself, who informed me it would be another 45 minutes before he arrived. Since it was early evening at this point, I asked him to cancel the trip and that I'd be using another service in the future. read more

Paid $200 to have an antique front door lock repaired and a backdoor deadbolt replaced by Chicago Locksmiths earlier this year. After 7 months the 100+ year old lock still was working fine, but the new deadbolt wasn't. They sent someone out to take a look. It took Matt a while to get deadbolt working smoothly, but he didn't leave until he was confident all was good. I greatly appreciated the follow-up assistance since beyond the 90-day warranty. And apparently Matt likes to work on antique locks, so I know who to ask for if the old one gives me trouble in the future. read more
