*Update after business owners response* I was absolutely aware of the work that had been quoted. I had the quote, I helped coordinate what needed doing. The business owner is claiming they told us it would cost more and gave us a choice, but this is inaccurate. He was on site on the day and told me they should have consulted us before proceeding with the lesser work. They only spoke to anyone after stating the work. I'm absolutely convinced they would have completed the work (poorly) and taken our money had I not got there to see what a terrible job they were doing. Either way, the work they were doing was not adequate even if we had opted for it which we did not. *end of update* I'm very aware the business can reply to these reviews. I'll outline exactly what happened and you can decide for yourself if you want to use them. We wanted a flat roof surface replacing. We were very specific that we wanted it striping down to the concrete underneath; the existing roof surface taking away and completely replacing with new. This company came to do the work and from photos I was sent it was very clear they were not removing the existing roof surface. I had someone in my building go and talk to them and they reassured her they were removing the existing surface. So I returned home to look at it, they were not removing the old roof surface, they were trying to stick new rubber over the existing which had sort of shingle on it so it wouldn't even stick properly and they'd not even ran it up to the termination bar. When challenged; the manager tried to tell me what they were doing was standard, (despite the fact we had a quote that specifically said they would haul away the old roof surface) then he changed course and said they had realized there was stuff under the roof surface and it would be more costly to do that so rather than tell us and give us a choice they opted to do less work and he claimed they were going to charge us less. Anyway, I had them stop work and leave and they did refund us. What they had done so far didn't even drain to the drain so it wouldn't have worked even if we let them continue. The next company that came out to look took one look at what was left of their work and laughed and said it was terrible and we now have a reputable company that has done the job correctly. read more

Unfortunately, during the next downpour some months later, the leak was still there. To their credit, they came out again. In December 2019, I was relocated to California but my home in Chicago needed chimney repair and flashing installed due to leakage into my den. I researched chimney repair and flashing through YELP reviews. After many estimates, research, telephone conversations, and negotiations, I decided to TRUST KELLY of CHICAGO STAR ROOFING to repair my chimney through rebuilding, tuckpointing, and the installation of flashing so that the rain water and snow melt off will 'slide' off the roof and not into my home. WELL...the price was $5,000 and though I thought it was pricey, he gained my trust and HIS reviews on YELP were unmatched. Though I was in California, KELLY assured me that the job would be done on time, professionally, and with diligence and care. Now, he was DONE in a day and I was happy about that! He DID send a picture and honestly, I did not know how it SHOULD look (my first time dealing with chimney issues) so it looked 'better than it did' so I thought OK. Now..due to COVID, I had to return home in March 2020. I subsequently had NEW gutters installed and that is when I was able to have a good look..UGH!!! The chimney is done with a sloppy hand and the concrete is oozing out like melted ice cream. The tucking is uneven and an absolute mess. The flashing is even worse. It is NOT even FLASHING but a hunk of brown metal attached to possibly COVER UP part of the chimney base that needed to be REPAIRED!! (A repair that I paid 5K for!!) It appears as though SOMEONE did not 'feel like' doing as such and this was a QUICK temporary 'non-solution!' It is warped and not adhered to the foundation of the chimney. There needs to be a metal piece that is attached to the 'brown thing' alongside the chimney that will ALLOW the water to SLIDE (NOT ACCUMULATE) down to the ground below. The aesthetics of the entire job is subpar as you can tell from the pictures. Once I was able to gage the actual inconsistency of the 'WORK' done, I contacted KELLY in tears!!! HE said that he would send someone out cause he was ill. Well..this took awhile for someone to come out and when he did, he looked UP from the STREET and said that it WAS warped due to the COLD!??? HUH??? Masonry should not warp due to the cold..that's absolutely ridiculous!!! He said that he would 're-do' it. Now, why re-do it IF you think it was done RIGHT in the beginning? I wait for them to RE DO IT..nothing! I text KELLY on April 22 and told him that the work HAS to be done by MAY 22! He texted back that it would be "RE DONE' before that!!! On May 17, 2020, after 24 hours of ferocious rain..guess what I noticed in my den??? LEAKING from the chimney/flashing trickling onto the floor! THE VERY thing that I just paid 5,000 for KELLY to fix!!! It is May 21, 2020 and I have heard nothing!!!! The 'flashing' is warping more' and the job was simply not done by someone who knew what they were hired to do. I am attaching pictures of the job THEY did and a picture of the great flashing job done to my NEIGHBOR'S home. YOU SEE THE DIFFERENCE??? KELLY WAS nice, but I would rather someone be an A#$ and do a great job on the home that I love and have lived for 24 years:(!!! NOT HAPPY!!! One word of advice: Get multiple quotes to reduce the price Chicago star roofing gives you! They charge the highest prices I've seen for some of the lowest quality work. We relied on Chicago Star Roofing to repair the membrane in our roof. They were very kind in their communications and fast. However, we later found out that what they quoted us was embarrassingly high for the time and effort put in. We paid $8K for what we thought was an intense task. Yet the workers were here for UNDER 2.5 hours of work, some of which had to be redone by a contractor later because it was so poorly done. They even added in a $750 dollar charge for sealant that cost them $20 on amazon. If we had paid under $2K perhaps the speed would have been worth it but for that price, I would stay away. read more
